PAGE 10 BAY HARBOUR Wednesday September 21 2016 Our People Eddie Simon •Continued from page 9 I played in my first band at 12-years-old and kept on from there. I play several instruments now, including guitar and piano, of course, and ukulele, mandolin, bass guitar, so I’m a bit of a multi- instrumentalist. Then I got into music producing in Canada and I had a studio there and a couple of studios here in New Zealand now. So I was not only producing my own music, but I ended up producing stuff for television, radio and film, and other people’s CDs and voice overs. I played with Lone Star Cattle Company, which is a country rock recording group in Canada. They’ve had a number of hits out so I was the lead guitarist and one of the lead singers for the band. One of the biggest shows we did was Expo in Vancouver in 1986 – we performed to well over 100,000 people. I also used to sing the national Canadian anthem at the big stadiums for the football, soccer and also baseball games, and you get about 50,000 to 60,000 people in the stadiums there. I also had my own TV show in Canada, it was a blues music show called Blues on White. I also had my own radio show here in Christchurch on Plains FM for a short time called Boomers Bay, which was aimed towards the baby boomers, so music from the 50s, 60s and 70s era. How did it feel performing in front of tens of thousands of people? That must have been pretty nerve wracking? When you get in front of a big crowd like that, well, for me personally, it’s just such a natural high and it’s definitely a big buzz. It’s really exciting and you can feel the adrenaline going . . . it’s hard to put into words sometimes. What about your family – were they very musical? There was 11 kids and mum and dad. Out of that, just three of us ended up performing professionally, so myself and my two sisters, Margaret and Pat. We did some recording together and did some TV shows and festivals etc etc, and basically, if anything came along, whether it be a wedding or community event, we were there so we got to be quite well known and respected. My sisters went on to being awardwinning singers in Canada and they were asked to be on TV and go into studios and do back up vocals on other people’s CDs. As a Canadian native, what prompted the move to New Zealand? I’d gone through a divorce, and I’m a spiritual person, so I said a little prayer and I wanted to find another partner and I said, even if I have to go to the ends of the earth to find her, I will and she ended up being in New Zealand. Her girlfriend had moved to Canada and I ran across her when I was out for coffee and we got chatting and she said: “I have the perfect person for you in Christchurch, New Zealand, and her name is Tracy.” Anyway, she put us in touch and we hit it off and next thing you know I’m selling everything in Canada and moving to New Zealand. I’ve just celebrated 11 years being in New Zealand now. How are you enjoying life in Christchurch? It’s pretty special living here. I like how everybody’s really friendly and you get to know your neighbours. I’ve liked becoming a part of the community and getting involved in the local church and events. The response from people has been absolutely fantastic and the community have been very supportive of my career throughout Christchurch. I’ve had the chance to travel around the country and do some gigs so overall it’s been a positive move and I’m excited to be here. I’m ready to take it to the next level with my business. So what is it like being a musician in New Zealand? It’s great. I’ve been to Hanmer Springs, Lake Tekapo, Queenstown . . . I’ve been to the West Coast, Hokitika, Napier, Wellington and I’ve got a show coming up in Auckland. I was in Stars in Their Eyes TV show in 2008 here in New Zealand as Leo Sayer. In Gore in 2008, I won three Gold Guitar awards for top instrumentalist and for being one of the top three in the vocalist and song writing category. Tell me about your studio you run from home. I have a studio called Acoustic Wave at my home. I’ve been working at the Rockshop store for nine and a half years and a short time after I’d been there, they asked me to be an acoustic guitar specialist and I got really into acoustic instruments. I also live out on Scarborough Hill by the sea, so Acoustic Wave just seemed to fit. So I’ve been doing that and I’ve also got into video production and digital photography. My focus is to leave a legacy and I’m trying to help up-and-coming artists. So I’m reaching out to singers and songwriters and acoustic guitar players who are trying to make something of their career and, if there’s something I can do with all the experience I have to help out, then I’m down.
