Recognising this changing mood, craftsman Peter O’Brien set up his Village Leather Craft studio in Heathcote Valley. Having learnt his craft in the heydays of the late 1970s, Peter has always retained a passion for working with leather, making a few belts from time to time, while quietly confident that he would return to it more fully one day. After moving up from Ashburton with his wife Marie, he is settled in Port Hills Road where he is enjoying designing and crafting a range of unique leather belts, bags, satchels, wallets and more recently adding to the range with guitar straps, wine bags, sunglasses cases and dog collars to meet the resurgence in interest. For Peter, what he finds especially satisfying is working with clients to come up with one-off designs. So, while he has a stock of sample belts and bags that show different styles and colours, Peter O’Brien the experience he wants to offer people is the opportunity to choose their own design, colour and style, making the item unique to their taste and requirements. He doesn’t use chemicals – all items are made from vegetabletanned leather and he has recently sourced a supplier of water-based dyes, stains and finishes. Every item is handcrafted and the bags are stitched or laced by hand. Peter has a large range of quality buckles and clasps, or clients can provide their own. The blossom trees are blooming and daffodils are standing tall in lush, green ashion fields. It makes you feel grateful to be alive as we enjoy better weather and longer days. However, this nirvana I speak of can change very quickly. When I was driving to work last week, there was a thick, low fog with visibility to almost 50m. This made me think about how quickly weather can Gardening change. It can be perfect one minute and rubbish the next. I’ve never been caught out by bad weather in a boat but I have, on the odd occasion, had to ride my motor-cycle home in a southerly downpour. This is not much fun, I can tell you. The beauty of riding my motor-cycle during bad weather otoring is that if I’m caught the rain, I can usually find a place to pull over until it subsides. There is usually a coffee shop or tea room nearby. We boaties don’t have the luxury of being close to a spot where we can moor up, grab a coffee and wait for the squall to pass. Checking the weather and conditions before heading out on the ocean, lake or river is absolutely crucial. Every water body has its own hazards which need to be reviewed properly before heading out for the day. Here’s a scenario to consider: A jet boater decides to go up river without checking the weather or mountain forecast. The river is initially low, but as the jet boater heads up the river, the water flow increases due to snow melt from previous days and heavy rain. Water levels become unmanageable and the jet boater is stuck on a bank in the middle of nowhere, calling for help. This hypothetical situation could have been avoided. The skipper just needed to spend five minutes checking the weather and river forecasts. Preparing well before your day on the water means you will avoid an incident and happily drive back home on one of Canterbury’s calm, spring afternoons. I’m interested in community views on whether there should be a levy on sugary soft drinks to encourage students and parents to make healthier choices. Obesity is overtaking tobacco as the major cause of preventable illness and death in New Zealand. One in four adult New Zealanders either has type two diabetes or has pre-diabetes and is at risk of getting type two diabetes. By 2021, the cost of treating type two diabetes is expected to be more than $2 billion. This will swamp our health services and swallow a chunk of the current annual $15 billion health budget. Bella 135 We know there is a problem with sugary drinks. A levy on sugary soft drinks should help reduce sugar consumption and obesity rates. The revenue it generates could be ploughed back into health promotion programmes. Our smoking rates have declined with Government action to change environmental factors around tobacco. These have included higher excise taxes on tobacco, and the Smoke-free Environments Act which restricts where and how tobacco can be sold and outlaws tobacco advertising and sponsorship. Sugar is robbing our children of their health and knocking years off their life expectancy. We could follow UK’s lead and put children’s health and wellbeing ahead of the interests of the junk food industry. The governments of the UK, Mexico, France and Norway all have such a levy. A tax on sugary drinks is supported by the New Zealand Medical Association and the World Health Organisation.
