Wednesday September 21 2016 BAY HARBOUR PAGE 13 News Green light for nature reserve Fashion • By Annabelle Dick DEVELOPMENT of the proposed Redcliffs Nature Reserve on the Christchurch Coastal Pathway has been given the go ahead after receiving a donation of services. Downer has agreed to do the complex land-forming works, to the detailed design by Wraight & Associates, at no cost to the Gardening Coastal Pathway project. Downer is already on site working on the Beachville Rd seawall repair for the coastal pathway and they have volunteered their services after they finish the seawall work. The 6.5km pathway will extend from Ferrymead to Motoring Scarborough Hill and the Christchurch Coastal Pathway Group have found spots along the route for special development. After reaching the amount of funding needed, the flat gravelled area opposite Redcliffs Park will now be turned into a nature reserve. Tasty Bites “This is one of the highlights of the pathway. Prior to drawing up concept designs, community workshops identified this small section of the Coastal Pathway as ideal for bird watching and establishing a more naturallooking edge to the estuary. The reserve design had been widely consulted on with the Redcliffs community and work will start in the next two weeks. The pathway group and city council held a community workshop for residents and estuary stakeholders to discuss the plans ranging from mostly asphalt to mostly naturalised. The final plan represents the most highly naturalised version modified by including a turning circle for boat trailers and additional boat and trailer parking. The project will go ahead thanks to funding from the Stronger Christchurch Infrastructure Rebuild Team and Coastal Pathway project funds and a service donation from Downer. The native plants will be funded by a grant from the Pacific Development and Conservation Trust and community volunteers will be sought to help with the planting next year.
