THRILLED: Lyttelton Football Club players Tane Gunn, Isaac Warren, Connor Buckley and Sayyad Mille look forward to
trading in their old soccer gear for new equipment.
Port gives to football club
• By Annabelle Dick
IT WAS a case of out with the
old and in with the new for
Lyttelton Football Club after
the port company funded
the purchase of new sporting
equipment.
The club developed a
programme in 2012 to teach
young children about the game
and Lyttelton Port of Christchurch
sponsored the purchase
of sporting gear to cater for
increasing numbers.
Club head coach Mick
Stephenson said world famous
football players like Lionel
Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo
were driving young people to
the sport.
“Until now we’ve been running
the programme using
secondhand equipment and
make-shift goal posts, so we
haven’t had the resources to
really excel,” he said.
“The equipment LPC funded
has been the best thing to happen
since we started. We now
have almost 100 children registered
so we’ve decided to run
the programme throughout
the school term.”
The Introduction to Football
course teaches youngsters,
aged eight to 13, the rules of
the sport and helps them develop
the basic skills a beginner
footballer needs.
“We’ve seen an increase in
young girls keen to take up the
sport,” Stephenson said.
“Football is a great way to
bring people together.”
Six senior club players, eager
to help the next generation
develop their skills, volunteer
their time to run the sessions.
LPC chief executive Peter
Davie said the sponsorship was
part of the company’s ongoing
commitment to the harbour
basin community.
“It’s great to see so many
local youngsters developing
an interest in sport and we’re
pleased that our sponsorship
has had such a positive impact
on the programme,” he said.
The programme is held three
times a week at the Lyttelton
Primary School and the Lyttelton
Recreation Centre.
