VACANT: Redcliffs Pharmacy owner Daryl Sayer has an empty car park behind his business, which can’t be accessed due to
the closure of Beachville Rd as a result of road works.
Parking nightmare for businesses
• By Annabelle Dick
A PUBLIC car park closure
on Beachville Rd has made
parking a nightmare for
Redcliffs businesses and
customers.
The closure of Beachville Rd
due to road works has blocked
access to the main car park
used by nearby businesses.
SCIRT is working on kerb
and channel installation and
sealing the carriageway at the
southern end of the road.
The car park on Beachville
Rd is the main parking option,
but now people can only park
on Main Rd or elsewhere if they
want to access shops.
Redcliffs Pharmacy owner
Daryl Sayer said the repairs
have been a big hassle to businesses
and people trying to
access them.
“We’ve got a fairly sizeable
car park at the back of the
pharmacy that services the
pharmacy, the fashion shop and
the cafeteria, but that’s inaccessible,”
he said.
The car park behind the Main
Rd shops has room for about 15
to 20 cars.
Mr Sayer said not having
anywhere to park has turned
people away from coming into
their stores.
“We’re suffering as a result, as
people have nowhere to stop,”
he said.
Redcliffs New World has
tried to remedy the problem by
allowing people to park in their
car park while the work takes
place.
Mr Sayer posted on the pharmacy’s
Facebook page to let
people know the supermarket
is an option if they struggle to
find parking.
“Some people have been
(parking there), but some feel
they can’t so I told people we
had (New World’s) blessing to
do that,” he said.
SCIRT is repairing the southern
corner but the northern
intersection was supposed to be
open to traffic.
Instead, SCIRT has closed
both ends of the road making it
inaccessible.
“They said the Beachville Rd
section should be open, but
they’ve totally closed it off, so
there’s no parking there at all,”
Mr Sayer said.
The repairs are expected to
finish around Monday, September
26, and the intersection will
be reopened.
SCIRT will then move onto
repairing the north end of
Beachville Rd and northern access
will be closed.
INJURED PASSENGER
One person was injured and two
others escaped relatively unscathed
after a car accident in Rapaki on
Sunday night. The car rolled on
Governors Bay Rd coming into
Rapaki at about 9pm. The injured
passenger was taken to hospital by
ambulance with light to moderate
injuries. The scene was cleared 30
minutes after the accident.
TSUNAMI TEST SIREN
A tsunami warning siren test will be
held this Sunday at 11am along the
coastline from Brooklands to Taylors
Mistake. The city council tests the sirens
on the first Sunday of April and
the last Sunday of September each
year. The sirens will last about three
minutes. A network of sirens warn
the public to evacuate coastal areas
when there is a tsunami coming from
a long distance.
ELECTRIC CAR CHARGE
The Hagley-Ferrymead Community
Board will decide whether an electric
vehicle charging station will be
installed on Nayland St in a board
meeting today. If the proposal is
accepted, parking on the south side
of Nayland St will be restricted to
a 60 minute time limit and will
be reserved for electric vehicles to
charge their batteries. In October
2015, the city council adopted the
Christchurch Energy Action Plan,
which targets the uptake of electric
vehicles.
