It had mixed success across a wide range of forums – rallying, formula one, touring car and sportscars. As a company it probably feels it deserved better results given the investment, but its success is probably better measured through the influence it has had on Peugeot performance cars destined for the road and mainstream buyers. Peugeot Sport today is largely the performance arm of Peugeot per se, and it lent its name to the two new-generation hot hatchbacks just released on the New Zealand market. The Peugeot 308 GTi and GT are both seriously good sports cars at affordable prices, the GTi lists at $58,990 and $49,990 respectively. While both can certainly be categorised as hot hatchbacks, there is a fundamental difference between the two. Regular readers will recall my evaluation of the GTi in these columns in ??. It is an enormously powerful, petrol-fuelled model which has just a 1.6-litre engine, but is rated at an amazing 200kW. It is fast, and quickly became one of my favourite drives thus far this year. But I had no sooner taken that car back to the dealership after evaluation when I picked up the GT, and it, too, is another surprise. The GT is a four-cylinder diesel model, and paired with an automatic transmission. Before you are left wondering how that could be treated as a hot hatchback, the reality is that it is. Elsewhere, the Peugeot GT gets much the same kit as its GTi stablemate, and shares the same five-door body style with body styling little different. The GT has the onboard detailing which promotes the sporty image, and sitting on the 308 platform is a realistic everyday hatch for when passengers need to be carried. I’m not saying it is a true five-seater, there are three seat belts across the rear, but it is a comfortable vehicle for four adults only, however, PEUGEOT 308 GT: High performance diesel engine. ride quality for those who do travel in the GT is sublime. That’s been a Peugeot legacy for many years, the handling/comfort compromise isn’t jeopardised in either direction. I took the test car on exactly the same high country loop which I chose for the GTi. The road to Lake Coleridge Village is one of my favourites for a performance car, and the GT with its fully independent suspension reacts well to sudden direction changes and forceful entry into a quick corner. Riding on sticky Michelin Pilot tyres (225/40 x 18in), there is direct turn-in and unyielding grip from the rear. • Price – Peugeot 308 GT, $49,990 • Dimensions – Length, 4253mm; width, 2043mm; height, 1446mm • Configuration: Fourcylinder, front-wheeldrive, 1997cc, 133kW, 400Nm, six-speed automatic. • Performance – 0-100km/h, 8.4sec • Fuel usage– 4l/100km There’s no denying the feel you get from front-wheeldrive, there is a tendency to push towards understeer, but the traction control network isn’t invasive and you can feel the point where the limits of traction are bordering on being lost. That being the case, the handling experience is left largely to the driver to decide when to push harder or to back off. Providing the punch is a 2-litre, turbocharged, twin-camshaft, engine, it is rated by Peugeot at 133kW. While this may seem like a huge power difference to STYLE: The Peugeot 308 GT shares looks with the GTi. the 200kW of its stablemate, bear in mind that the diesel has a broad and consistent spread of torque (400Nm) available at just 2000rpm. Add in the heightened engine management protocols at the touch of a button – the sport mode remapping device – the GT bursts into life providing performance figures almost uncharacteristic for a diesel. Peugeot claim an 8.4sec standstill to acceleration time, and a top speed of 220km/h. It will also scamper to 120km/h from 80km/h in 5sec, the generous mid-range turbo boost and torque supply providing the driver with encouraging accelerator feel. The combination of power and handling is fabulous, the GT is nimble, agile and responsive. While the term GT relates to something more grandiose (grand touring), the diesel 308 certainly fits into the category of high performance cruising. It reacts willingly to driver input, and when it is working hard it doesn’t overly taunt the senses; there is an angry growl and throb, but the diesel harmonics are subdued. And as much as you belt the 308 GT along, it is doing so with little fuel use. Peugeot also claim an amazing four-litre per 100km (70mpg) combined cycle average. That relates well to the 5.5l/100km (50mpg) figure during my time with the test car. Incidentally, a 4l/100km instantaneous figure is also available at a steady 100km/h (engine speed 1650rpm). As much as I admire and respect the incredible power outputs of the petrol GTi, if I was a hot hatchback buyer I’d be looking seriously at the diesel. You can have just about as much fun, yet save $9000 in the process. Either way you are getting a fabulous driving experience built with the values that Peugeot have been providing in their hot hatchback models for as long as I can remember.
