Bid for second term • By Bridget Rutherford MAYOR LIANNE Dalziel is officially seeking re-election. She registered her nomination yesterday to go for her second term in the top job, running under the banner of Best for Christchurch. “I’ve been proud to represent Christchurch for the last three years, but I believe there is unfinished business. As mayor, I have based my decisions on what I truly believe is best for Christchurch – not best for council, not best for Government and not best for an individual interest group – but best for Christchurch,” she said. “This is what I continue to stand for.” Ms Dalziel will stand against confirmed candidates John Minto, of Keep our Assets Canterbury, and perennial candidate Tubby Hansen. Ms Dalziel’s bid was supported by former National cabinet minister Philip Burdon, and Ministry of Awesome founder Kaila Colbin, who both nominated her for the job three years ago. Ms Colbin said she had “zero hesitation” in nominating Ms Dalziel for the second time. She said it was difficult to stand up to the public and be open about the city’s financial situation and insurance issues, which is what had to be done over the past three years. “She has done a tremendous job. I’m really happy she’s standing again.” Ms Colbin is helping to organise American conference SingularityU, which is being held in Christchurch in November. Local body elections will be held on October 8. •Editorial page 16 Seeing red over green building • By Annabelle Dick A NEW Cares Appliances premises in Ferrymead has attracted a number of complaints whiteware warehouse from residents over its bright green colour scheme. The whiteware appliance store has coped criticism before their new building has even opened on Ferry Rd. It is set to open in early September. Cares Appliances owner Matthew Carpenter said it was the first time he had received complaints, in spite of his business being in the city for 10 years. “I had a complaint that said the colour was terrible and disgusting. I’ve also had comments from third parties who’d seen the colour and were put off by it,” Mr Carpenter said. This isn’t the first store of its kind in the city. There are also several other chain stores in Christchurch on Fitzgerald Ave and Barrington St which have received no complaints for the bright-green colour. world’s best value whiteware!
