The Star Latest Christchurch news at www. .kiwi Thursday May 25 2017 13 News The Colombo to expand • By Gabrielle Stuart THE COLOMBO shopping centre is set to get more car parking – but the move may come at a cost to small business owners who face losing their shops. Property investor Lilly Cooper, who owns The Colombo, has bought several properties in the block between the Colombo and Brougham St. She plans to demolish some of the buildings to expand the shopping centre car park. Business owners leasing buildings from Ms Cooper told The Star the rent had been hiked, and they were told to either pay the extra or to leave. Heritage Funeral Services director Peter Yearbury said he was told the rent would go up 42 per cent if he chose to stay. But he was hesitant to move, Peter Yearbury because he had spent a large amount of money fitting out the Brougham St building. He did a full renovation when he moved the business there four years ago, after a fire destroyed his premises in Halswell. However, he said Ms Cooper had been reasonable in their meetings, and had tried to help find an alternative. “She even took me to see other places she owns to see if they would be suitable,” he said. Ms Cooper said the rent increases were to cover costs, and were “business as usual.” She said she had offered to extend the leases for existing tenants by two months if they needed more time to find somewhere new. “I am a nice landlady, but it’s the old story with these centres. The Colombo is such a success and it keeps growing, so the biggest need is to give it more car parking.” TIGHT FIT: The Colombo owner Lilly Cooper plans to demolish buildings around the shopping centre to make room for more car parking.
