Stopping elder abuse<br />
in our communities<br />

abuse in the district<br />
I believe here in <strong>Selwyn</strong><br />
we have a wonderful sense<br />
of community and most<br />
people respect and care for<br />
each other regardless of<br />
background or age.<br />
When it comes to age,<br />
the last Census back in<br />
2013 showed that we had a<br />
younger population than<br />
other areas of New Zealand.<br />
Only 10.8 per cent of people<br />
in <strong>Selwyn</strong> at that time were<br />
aged 65 or over, compared<br />
with 14.3 per cent of the<br />
total New Zealand population.<br />
It will be interesting to<br />
see whether this proportion<br />
has changed much when<br />
we have the next Census in<br />
2018.<br />
While most people do<br />
love and care for their older<br />
family members to the best<br />
of their ability, there is a<br />
growing awareness that<br />
some do not. This issue was<br />
at the forefront earlier this<br />
month during Elder Abuse<br />
Awareness Week which was<br />
held from <strong>June</strong> 15 to 22.<br />
Elder abuse can include<br />

physical, financial or<br />
psychological abuse. Often<br />
elder abuse goes unreported<br />
because people do<br />
not understand or want to<br />
accept that they are being<br />
abused.<br />
One of the reasons for<br />
this is likely to be because<br />
three-quarters of abusers<br />
are family members or people<br />
that the victim should<br />
be able to trust.<br />
These close relationships<br />
can create a reluctance to<br />
speak out, with many too<br />
ashamed to admit that this<br />
is happening to them.<br />
My colleague, Minister<br />
for Seniors Maggie Barry is<br />
putting some excellent initiatives<br />
in place to address<br />
elder abuse and neglect and<br />
ensure our most vulnerable<br />
are supported so that they<br />
can lead happy and healthy<br />
lives.<br />
The new services will be<br />
focused on providing practical<br />
help and strategies to<br />
victims of elder abuse.<br />
One such initiative is a<br />
new helpline which will be<br />
available from July 1 and<br />
will operate 24 hours per<br />
day/seven days a week. The<br />
free 0800 helpline will be<br />
available to anyone who<br />
needs information or support<br />
regarding elder abuse<br />
or neglect – whether they<br />
experience it themselves or<br />
see it happening to others.<br />

on how you can protect<br />
yourself and advice on how<br />
to have a conversation with<br />
others if you have concerns.<br />
Elder abuse should never<br />
be part of any society so if<br />
you or anyone you know is<br />
being treated inappropriately<br />
by family members or<br />
others, please speak up.<br />
It is time to bring this<br />
issue out into the open.<br />
