Backyard Critters
Mike Bowie is an ecologist who
specialises in entomology (insects
and other invertebrates). Each
week he introduces a new species
found in his backyard at Lincoln.
His column aims to raise public
awareness of biodiversity, the variety
of living things around us:
THE ROBBER fly (Neoitamus melanopogon)
is a common predator found in
sunny clearings around New Zealand.
It is a native species about 18-23mm in
length and often perches on vegetation,
waiting for a prospective victim to capture
in-flight.
They catch prey as large as themselves
with their long legs fitted with large
bristles and claws adapted for holding
RUTHLESS:
The robber fly
catches prey
as large as
themselves.
Ruthless predators
them.
They inject a neurotoxin that
immobilises the prey and digestive
enzymes that dissolve the body tissue that
is then sucked out.
Like all flies, this species has halteres
which are dumb-bell like modified hind
wings that help balance during flight.
However, in this case, the halteres are a
conspicuous bright yellow colour. Males
are easily identified by their distinctive,
large genital bulb at the end of their
abdomen.
Robber fly eggs are laid in soil or on
plants, where emerging larvae feed on
rotting vegetation.
This role, along with its predatory
adults, make this species important in the
ecosystem.
succeeded in delivering to my expectations - I
have enjoyed learning introductory tech skills
such as programming, web development,
databases and user experience. The project
work has provided real-life examples of how
these skills could be applied and required
our group to work together to achieve the
desired result.” Qualified geologist and Shift
