The Partie Quebecois finall y held a
referendum on the fate of Canada's
francophoneprovince in October.
' 1995. The resul ts were close. to say
the leas t: 49,6'k of Quebec announced
thai they wanted out of
Ca nada. Alt hough the official
victory was on the No side . it is safe
to say thai the moral victory was
won b) ' the separatists. A delegat ion
of students from the College
Francais aJarv is went to Momrealro
lake part in a Canada wide rally to
show Quebec that they have not bee n
ignored.
On October 30 1995. (he
province of Quebec held a
refere ndum asking its citize ns
whether or not (hey wanted to
become a sovereign country. There were numerous campaigns organized in all pan s of Canada to support the
"Non" side. One of these projects was called "Signatures Referend um". a giant petition organized by
O.$.S.A. (Ontario Secondary Schoo l Student Association). They sent petitions to Ontario High School s to be
signed by interested stude nts. By signing the petiti on students were asking Quebec to remain a part of
Canada.
We, the student coun cil of Coll ege Francais aJarvis. were concerned about the refe rendum . Upon rece iving
this petition we went around the school and co llected as many signatures as we could. Then on October 26,
1995 we went to Mon trea l along with other studen ts from Ontario high schools to hold a press conference to
present the ove r 100.000 signatures collected to the "Non " side.
In Montreal we were a very enthusiastic group. waving our Canadian and Quebec flags everywhere. Quebec
was clearly divided . We did our best to convey
our deep love for the province. October 26 will
be a day we will neve r forger.
The nation al ant hem became very importan t for
us all that day. We sang both to and from Montreal.
II was particularl y special on the way back.
for we did not know if it was the last time we
were singing our national anthem as a united
country. We knew it would be a very close race
on Referendum day. and we were relie ved by the
results. We love Canada and we love Quebec.
