Izone reaching
maturity
A decision more than 10 years ago to encourage industrial
activity in the Rolleston area at the Izone development, on
the opposite side of State Highway One, has proved to be
one of Selwyn District Council’s most successful strategic
initiatives.
The 180ha development, which started out as a wholly
council-owned piece of farmland, has progressively been
transformed into a high-quality, master-planned industrial
estate – the envy of most other large-scale industrial parks
nationally.
More than 1200 jobs have been established, with many
more to come given that construction has yet to start on 40
per cent of land which has been sold.
Council’s finances have benefitted significantly during
recent years from revenue generated from land sales.
In addition, Izone-based businesses now contribute
significantly to the district’s rates revenue – a figure that
will only continue to grow as landowners increase the value
of their site by investing in buildings.
Development director Robin Hughes, who has overseen
Izone’s growth since its inception, says the only Selwyn
Council-owned land remaining for sale is 25 2500-5000sqm
lots.
“These last few smaller sites are ideal for contractors,
smaller manufacturing businesses and storage units.”

Izone, currently constructing a significant new coolstore
building on its 3.34ha site in Stage 7. Once completed in
two years time, about 20 staff will be employed, operating
a state-of-the-art blast freezer and freezer storage facility,
as well as a giant coldstore which will service a diverse
range of Canterbury meat, fishing, food manufacturing and
distribution businesses.
Inland port to improve freight movement
The first stage of the Carter development on 122ha of
industrial-zoned land in Rolleston, IPORT, will see the
Lyttelton Port Company establishing its inland port on 27ha
of the site. The remaining hectares adjacent to the port
are seen as providing ideal sites for businesses needing to
move goods to set up.
The inland port is designed to significantly improve
the movement of freight in the region, contributing to
the establishment of Rolleston as a regional hub for
businesses involved in exporting, importing, logistics,
industry and agriculture.
Strategically positioned at the intersection of Canterbury’s
major freight arteries – the South Island Main Trunk
Railway Line, the Midland Railway Line, and State
Highway 1, IPORT’s benefits will come to full fruition
with the completion of the second stage of the Southern
Motorway, which will halve travel time between Rolleston in
Christchurch from 30 minutes to 15 minutes. This is due for
completion in 2018/19.
