St Andrew’s of the Glen, Glentunnel
Selwyn’s churches are a place of worship for people living
in and visiting the district. Many have interesting
architecture, history, or hold events linking the church to its
community; such as:
• Arthur’s Pass Chapel where tourists view the Avalanche
Creek waterfall
• Springfield’s Gothic Revival St Peter’s Church, the work
of architect Cyril Mountfort
• Glentunnel’s St Andrew’s of the Glen that has a garden
setting where bellbirds may be heard
• St Paul’s Anglican in West Melton where people relax,
listening to music at its Saturday morning market
• The historic 1885 Hone Wetere Church on Te Ruahikihiki’s
pã site and Urupa (graveyard) that includes old
pre-European burials.
Inside the churches, on surrounding gravestones and in
cemeteries elsewhere around the countryside, is a record of
early farmers and residents who ensured the continuing life
and vibrancy of these places of worship, keeping their faith
and church at the heart of their community.
