FROM THE EDITOR WELCOME TO OUR Spring Wine Issue. You’ll notice an inordinate number of articles related to the Oregon crop that’s always on the tip of our tongues. One way to go about wine tasting this spring is to drop in on the cool new tasting rooms in the area. You can start with the three we review on page 66. Another is to collect charms along the Tri-County Charm Trail, which includes fifteen wineries in Yamhill, Polk and Marion counties. If you have a mother and an Airstream, you can prove (or test) your love for mom, like 1859 managing editor Sheila Miller did on a recent outing. A native Portlander, Sheila had never been wine tasting in Oregon, only in Sonoma with girlfriends. Discovery is what happens when you bring together novice Airstreamers with novice wine tasters for this Trip Planner on page 106. Of all the wine pieces in this issue, I was particularly inspired by the story of Oregon’s Hidden Gems (pg. 74). This piece challenges wine drinkers to get off Main Street and onto dirt roads when it comes to wine tasting on Memorial Day. For your troubles, you will be rewarded with a whole new world of wine from innovative winemakers in stunningly beautiful settings. Over the decades, risk-takers have led the Oregon wine industry from obscurity to prominence. Meet Mark Tarlov, a former film producer who takes a minimalist French approach to growing wine—from dry farming to whole cluster fermentation and wild yeast. With his Alit Wine brand, Tarlov introduces transparent pricing, noting the exact cost of production and profit. Read this provocative story on Startup on page 64. Our Home Grown Chef runs into problems when he can’t, as a chef at a venue where big-name musical acts played, produce collard greens for Buddy Guy and his band. Thor turns collard green blues into gold with this salad. Phew! Finally, we duck into the Pendleton workshop of saddlemaker Rod Retherford for My Workspace. He learned from the best more than twenty years ago. Now he has become one of the top craftsmen in the business. Have a peek into this leatherbound cowboy culture on page 70. If you get a wild hair, saddle up your horse and ride it into wine country as I did a few years back (Google 1859 and Pinot Wilderness).
