Speaker Meetings at
The River Inn
Wednesday 24th January - David Atkinson, guest of Bob Ross, spoke on “Social
Media”. David was born in South Yorkshire. He is the Chairman of the Rotary District
1230 (West of Scotland) committee for marketing, public relations and communications. Through his
business - CO2 Design - a graphic design company situated in Paisley adjacent to Paisley Grammar
School, which specialises in branding, printed material, websites and e-fl yers, David has learned how
to use social media for promotion of businesses, charities and clubs. He welcomed the club’s use of
Facebook to promote its activities and also encouraged individual members, including several socialmedia
sceptics (!) to take advantage of the medium through family groups to keep in touch with distant
relatives, and perhaps alleviate loneliness.
Wednesday 31st January - Maisie Hamilton, Beatson Cancer Charity. Ronnie Mercer introduced
Maisie who started by describing the wonderful work carried out by the Beatson. It is named after
Dr George Beatson (later Sir George) who was an International pioneer in the treatment of breast
cancer. The Beatson now serves a population of 2.6 million and the team sees more than 8000 new
patients annually as well as administering more than 20,000 courses of chemotherapy and around
6500 courses of Radiotherapy each year. Beatson Cancer Charity is determined to beat cancer and is
committed to securing signifi cant funding (currently £2M/year) to support and enhance the treatment,
care and wellbeing of current, former and future cancer patients and their families. There are three main
functions of the charity: fundraising and communications - patient and family support - funding. After
many questions Angus asked members to join him in thanking Maisie for a most interesting presentation
on a very worthwhile charity.
Hand-over of Mobility Scooter
While many of the club’s Community Service projects support charities or groups,
sometimes the opportunity arises to support a deserving family or an individual.
When the club heard that Ross Stirling’s family and friends were seeking to raise
money to buy a mobility scooter they rallied round and decided that Rotary would
step in using funds raised by the club at various events including the annual
Burns Supper and BBQ.
The photograph shows Community Service Chair Ronnie Mercer at the hand-over
of the scooter, purchased by Rotary, to Ross, who suffered a brain stem stroke in
August 2015. Ross’s wife Janice said “We cannot thank Gryffe Valley Rotary Club
enough for providing the scooter. It will help Ross with his goal of getting out for
walks with me and the dog, raise his level of independence and in so doing lift his spirits.”
