LA SODINA
Ou la flûte malgache
Cet instrument fait partie des
aérophones. Son origine remonte
à l’époque de la royauté à
Madagascar, au temps de l’ancien
Roi Andriamanelo. C’était alors un
moyen de communication avec le
Dieu Zanahary car on attribue au
son aigu de la Sodina des vertus
magiques et enchantées.
Autrefois utilisée par les souverains,
la Sodina est la version malgache de la
flûte. Fabriquée à partir de l’Angaroha,
un grand coquillage, elle produit un son
remarquable. Long d’environ 30 à 40 cm,
elle est ouverte aux deux extrémités et
percée de huit trous qui correspondent
aux huit notes de la gamme. Elle diffère
de la flûte européenne en ce qu’elle n’a
pas de trou latéral formant embouchure
et qu’elle est ouverte aux deux bouts.
Pour en jouer, l’artiste enfle la joue
gauche, entoure presque entièrement
des lèvres un bout de tuyau pour ne
laisser à découvert qu’un tout petit
intervalle par où pénètre le souffle. Le
joueur de Sodina se taille toujours un
beau succès auprès des Européens,
tant par l’étrangeté des sons produits
que par la déformation de son visage.
En solo ou en petit groupe, la
Sodina est principalement associée
à la musique folklorique. Quand on
lui rajoute des tambours, l’ensemble
devient la base du hira gasy. Un des
grands chanteurs-musiciens « Rakoto
Frah » lui a redonné sa noblesse en la
faisant connaître internationalement.
La relève est aujourd’hui assurée par
de jeunes musiciens malgaches à
l’exemple de Rakoto Frah junior.
Le joueur de Sodina
se taille toujours un
beau succès auprès
des Européens.

THE SODINA
A Malagasy flute
This instrument is part of the
aerophones. Its origin goes back to
the time of royalty in Madagascar,
at the time of the old King
Andriamanelo. It was then a means
of communication with the God
Zanahary because one attributes
the acute sound of the Sodina to
magical and enchanted virtues.
Formerly used by sovereigns, Sodina
is the Malagasy version of the flute.
Made from Angaroha, a large shell, it
produces a remarkable sound. About
30 to 40 cm long, it is open at both ends
and has eight holes that correspond to
the eight notes of the range. It differs
from the European flute in that it has
no lateral hole forming a mouthpiece
and is open at both ends.
To play with it, the artist swells their
left cheek, almost completely wraps
a piece of hose around the lips to
reveal only a tiny gap through which
the breath enters. The Sodina player
is still a great success with Europeans,
both the strangeness of the sounds
produced as well as by the distortion
of the face.
In solo or small groups, Sodina is
mainly associated with folk music.
When we add drums, the entirety
becomes the basis of “hira gasy”. One
of the great singers-musicians “Rakoto
Frah” has restored its nobility by
making it known internationally. The
succession is now provided by young
Malagasy musicians like Rakoto Frah
Junior.
