Ease PMS Naturally
South Woodham Focus
There’s an old saying about how the world would be different if men had
periods instead of women, but if that was the case, it is certain that the
discomfort and disruption of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) would have
been solved many years ago! As it is, no one really knows the exact cause
of PMS although the likely suspect is a monthly drop in the hormones
progesterone and oestrogen which heavily influences mood and anxiety
levels.
Ease PMS Naturally
You probably don’t need me to cite the long list of symptoms that are
associated with PMS but they include: depression, cramping and
headaches, backache, irritability, mood swings, breast tenderness, changes
to the skin and hair, fluid retention and bloating. As many as one in five
women will suffer from these symptoms in the one or two weeks prior to
her period and for many the problems are a big disruption to daily life.
So what can you do to ease PMS symptoms without reaching for
painkilling drugs along with their extensive list of side effects? Firstly, try
to avoid PMS by considering your diet and, if necessary, taking
supplements. There is increasing evidence that adequate doses of calcium
and vitamin D can reduce symptoms. Some studies suggest that vitamin
B6 and the supplement red clover can be effective for some women.
Although research results are mixed, many women report that taking
evening primrose or starflower oils (that contain gamma linolenic acid or
GLA) are helpful. It’s important that you talk to your GP as they can advise
you on recommended dosages (excessive doses carry their own side
effects). I’ve listed below some useful dietary tips below which you can
follow along with advice from your GP.
Keeping a diary of what you eat and noting any stressful situations and
how you feel about your health during your cycle is a good way to spot
patterns and triggers of PMS. You can then take steps to avoid this
situations or triggers. Getting in contact with other people who suffer PMS
may help you feel less frustrated. The charity the National Association for
Premenstrual Syndrome (NAPS) has lots of useful advice, resources and a
popular online forum and is doing fantastic work to support further
research into PMS: www.pms.org.uk or 0870 777 2177. NAPS can also offer
you advice about keeping a menstrual chart.
At my clinic, we’ve helped many patients over the years with the
headaches, backache and cramps that so often accompany PMS. There is
supporting evidence that a chiropractic adjustment is effective at naturally
relieving these symptoms. In a nine month clinical trial (1) involving 25
women with diagnosed PMS, the patients receiving regular chiropractic
adjustments showed greater improvement than those receiving a placebo
Headaches?
treatment. A different study (2) also showed improvements in mood
swings and tension with a self rated improvement in overall symptoms of
44 per cent.
Diet and nutrition
Talk to your GP or gynaecologist about supplements including calcium,
vitamins D and B6. Avoid alcohol and caffeine and limit your sugar intake.
Low-fat and high fibre diets help to reduce symptoms.
Drink plenty of water and limit your salt intake (watch out for high salt
levels We in processed can foods). help!
Try GLA oils such as evening primrose or starflower capsules.
THE WILD WEST COMES TO SOUTH WOODHAM FERRERS CAMERA CLUB
South Woodham Ferrers Camera Club recently held a fun studio photo
session with a Wild West theme.
John and Mike, two members of the Spearfish Creek Re-enactment
group were our models posing in their authentic costumes. They also
brought along many interesting props for our members to photograph.
It was great opportunity for members to practise photography using the
club’s studio equipment and everyone enjoyed this studio session with a
difference.
If you are looking for some inspiration and help with your photography
for the coming spring and summer why not come along to one of our
meetings and see what we have to offer.
We are not like most traditional camera clubs whose main focus is
photographic competition. We are a small friendly club whose main aim
is to help members increase their enjoyment of photography and
improve their skills, showing and sharing our photos and knowledge
with each other and having fun while doing so.
You don’t need to have a fancy camera either, some of us have small
compacts and others large digital SLRs, and everything in between.
Some of us have been taking photos for many years and other have just
started, but everyone is there to learn, share and enjoy our hobby..
Photography is often thought of as being male dominated but at our
club approx 1/3rd of our members are women, and over half of our
committee are women. We welcome everyone and all ages, although for
those age under 18 we require they are accompanied by a parent or
guardian.
We do not teach photography in an academic way, but we do aim to
help improve our photography with a programme which we hope offers
something for everyone.
Our practical sessions include - How to develop and bring out the best in
our photos using photographic software, Still life/tabletop/macro
sessions, Portraiture and studio work.
We have talks from visiting photographers and our own members who
share their work, photos from their travels, and techniques and ideas.
In addition, everyone is encouraged to take an active part by submitting
their photos in our regular appraisal evenings, where we get feedback,
advice and discussion from experts.
You can come along for 2 free visits so you've nothing to lose.
We meet in the Small Hall, opposite the “blue cage” at the Village Hall,
A Once in a Lifetime Celebration!
Stow Maries Commemorates 100 Years of RAF
Stow Maries Great War Aerodrome in Maldon, Esse celebrate the centenary
of the Royal Air Force on Sunday 1st April 2018.
Jonathon Whaley flying
the Sopwith Camel
WThe aerodrome was originally opened in 1916 and was home to B Flight of No
37(HD) Squadron, Royal Flying Corps. The site saw the birth of the Air Defence of
Great Britain in response to the first raids by Zeppelins and Gotha bombers on
London and the South East.
On 1st April 1918,
following the
amalgamation of
squadrons, personnel
of the Royal Flying
Corps and the Royal
Naval Air Service, the
Royal Air Force
became the world’s
very
first
independent air arm.
The RAF continued in
its dedicated role at
Stow Maries until
Spring 1919, when it
closed its doors
forever. The site then
reverted to Flambirds
Farm and its age-old
farming role.
William and Samule Squire, Charle Bassinton, Matten Compton,
Joe Diss and Grace Bettis with the build a plane project
Now 100 years on and with the aerodrome
boasting Europe’s largest known surviving group
of Royal Flying Corps buildings on a WW1 site,
plus its growing collection of objects directly
related to the aerodrome and its activities, this
amazing attraction will honour this momentous
occasion with an exclusive event supported by
the RAF.
The Aerodrome’s two interactive permanent
exhibitions, BBQ, Bar, The Airmen’s Mess Cafe,
and a range of exhibitors will all be accessible
during the day plus a chance to enjoy the rare
experience of getting up-close to Stow Maries’
resident WW1 aircraft on a flight line walk for
just £5.
Tickets for the event are £13 per adult, children
under 16 are Free. For more information on
tickets www.stowmaries.org.uk
Stow Maries Great War Aerodrome is open to
the public every every day except Tuesdays &
Ride for Helen is back on Sunday 13th May for its fifth year and promises to
be one of the region’s biggest and best cycling events in 2018 for Helen
Rollason Cancer Charity! (HRCC)
Cyclists from across the county will be meeting at the Crix in Hatfield Peverel,
Essex to take part in this fantastic, family-friendly event which offers a choice
of cycling routes to suit all capabilities; 6 miles, 15 miles, 35 miles, 65 miles
and NEW 100 miles.
All ages and abilities are welcome to join in as individuals or as a team, and
families can enjoy two FREE child places for every paying adult on the 6
mile route. Included in the registration price is a fundraising pack, route
maps, route signage, first aid support, mobile mechanic support and
recovery, refreshment stops and a medal for finishers. Entrants have the
option to purchase a Ride for Helen t-shirt on registration or a special cycling
jersey which has been designed for the charity by Scimitar (available to
purchase from www.stores4sports.com).
Nadije Butler from Ilford has volunteered to act as sweeper for the 65 mile
route; “My role as sweeper involves cycling at the end of the 65 mile riding
group to ensure all riders are safe and keeping together. I really enjoy this
role and it will be my third year in a row taking part as a volunteer.
As a breast cancer survivor myself, I know first-hand how important
complimentary therapies and support are for cancer patients and their
nearest and dearest. I am delighted to support the Helen Rollason Cancer
Charity – they do amazing work and have helped so many people and their
families.”
Hayley Robertson, 29 from Southend works at Essex Audi and will be taking
part in the event in May; “I have taken part in Ride for Helen a number of
times already, but missed out in 2017 as I had a baby! Now my little one is
10 months old I’m really keen to get back into training and involved in this
fantastic fundraising event again.
My colleague Chris Nobes and I have challenged ourselves to take part in the
100 mile London to Surrey cycle ride in July, so we have signed up for 65
miles for Ride for Helen – just enough to warm us up! We all know someone
who has been effected by cancer so I am really pleased to be supporting the
Helen Rollason Cancer Charity at this annual event – let’s keep our fingers
crossed for sunny skies!
HRCC Fundraising Manager Kate Alden said:
“We are all really looking forward to this year’s
Ride for Helen on Sunday 13th May as it’s
always such an exciting and popular event
which attracts a variety of participants. We have
worked really hard to map out the best routes
through the beautiful Essex countryside to
ensure that all of our riders have a fantastic
experience.
I’d like to thank Essex Audi for the use of their
vehicles as recovery cars, Wilkin & Sons for
providing the medals, drinks and snacks for
everyone taking part and Winfresh for donating
bananas – perfect for a healthy energy boost!
Also thanks to The Lion at Boreham for
providing essential water, Spokes Cycle Care
and Repair in Chelmsford for their services and
repairs and Eat Natural for donating their snack
bars and bike seat covers.
In 2017, Ride for Helen raised an incredible
£41,442 for Helen Rollason Cancer Charity, with
over 1,400 people taking part. It was fantastic to
see families, groups of friends, and experienced
Nadije Butler and
Deadpool taking part
in Ride for Helen 2017
cyclists all enjoying the ride. We also feel very lucky that our patron Ian
Twinley, has kindly allowed us to use the beautiful grounds of The Crix as a
starting and finishing point every year. We couldn’t organise such an amazing
and successful event without the help of our dedicated team of volunteers,
staff, sponsors and supporters.”
For more information or to register, please visit www.rideforhelen.co.uk or
call 01245 380719. You can also find out more about the great work that
Helen Rollason Cancer Charity does at www.helenrollason.org.uk
If cycling isn’t your thing but you’d still like to get involved, why not volunteer
on the day? We have lots of fun and exciting roles for you to get stuck into –
The Light
At this time of year, we are seeing new growth all around us. The colours and sounds of nature of flowers
and birdsong; it can bring a warmth to us that little else can. We experience beauty as humans.
That beauty has been created within us and we can express that with each other and for each other.
Love is a verb, not just a feeling in a moment; and, through our desire to give, share, and be kind to each
other, we demonstrate that inner beauty. We are significant, all of us in the eyes of God. We can go wrong
when we start making comparisons with others in the world. Maybe I should look like that, speak like that,
act like that – but this beauty is temporary and fallible.
-#(#%%$).//&
What we can achieve is significant as individuals and as a group. What we can create can be beautiful to
behold. We have a desire to seek good, to please; we find pleasure in expressing ourselves. Many artists in different fields say
that their inspiration comes from something within them – an expression of themselves.
However, the essence of the beautiful creation that we are, is how we are. The relationships that we choose can encourage and
support each other. We all know people that need more support and love
at times, and we are just the people to make a difference. Each of us has an
inner beauty that, through the Lord, is there; and that means we are
significant and we can make a difference. We need to manage all our
relationships to be beneficial and safe for both. That includes those that
could become habitual or addictive.
Seek to be a friend, a companion – this is what we are called to be.
MALDON FILM CLUB
Maldon Film Club’s very successful season continues with the
screening of After the Storm on Wednesday 11th April and Love
and Friendship on Wednesday 25th April 2018.
In After the Storm Ryota, whilst dwelling on his past glory as an
award winning author, wastes the money he makes as a private
detective on gambling and can barely pay child support. After the
death of his father, his mother and ex-wife seem to be moving on
with their lives. Although he renews contact with his family Ryota
struggles to find a lasting place in the life of his young son – until a
stormy summer night offers them a chance to change all that.
The second film in April, Love and Friendship, is based on “Lady
Susan” by Jane Austen. Young widow Lady Susan Vernon visits
her in-laws estate to wait out the colourful rumours about her
dalliances circulating through society. Whilst there, she decides to
secure a husband for herself and for her eligible but rather
reluctant daughter Frederica. In doing so she attracts the attention
of three men, with great complications. Directed by Whit Stillman,
Love and Friendship starts Kate Beckinsale, Chloe Sevigny and
Stephen Fry
The Club meets at Maldon Town Hall and doors open at 7.15pm.
Wine and soft drinks are available, at a charge, from 7.30pm and
all films begin at 8pm. From now until the end of the season films
will be screened on a Wednesday.
The current season continues until May 23rd and the remaining
two films to be shown are Victoria and Toni Erdmann. Why not
come along as a guest for the rest of the season and pay just £3
per film. Membership forms for 2018/19 will be available soon and
new members are very welcome!
For further information please check out our web site
Springtime at the RHS Gardens
Hyde Hall, Essex
April and May 2018
It’s a great time of the year to visit the RHS Gardens and shake
off memories of chillier months with the uplifting colours and
scents of spring
It is truly the season of new beginnings at Hyde Hall as its major
investment projects near completion this spring, and work
begins to create beautiful new horticulture in the Hilltop area. In
the meantime, there will be plenty to find around the Hilltop
Garden on the Spring Trail, including the delightful pink and
white blossom of Malus ‘Butterball’, fragrant Viburnum x
burkwoodii ‘Anne Russell’ and double-headed Narcissus ‘Thalia’.
In late spring, look out for rich blue spires of camassia with its
striking star-shaped flowers on tall stems.
On Clover Hill, plants that have earned the RHS Award of Garden
Merit offer plenty of seasonal inspiration for home gardeners.
The burst of golden flowers on Forsythia x intermedia 'Lynwood
Variety' AGM are a welcome sight in early spring, while the pinkflushed
white blossom of Japanese quince 'Moerloosei' AGM will
put on a show for several weeks. The earliest-flowering rose of
spring can also be found here: the sunny yellow blooms of Rosa
xanthina 'Canary Bird' AGM appear in May to herald the coming
summer months.
Check on the progress of Hyde Hall’s new Winter Garden close to
the Visitor Centre and see how the planting has been designed
to create interest throughout the year – not just winter. The
drooping sprays of bell-shaped yellow flowers on Stachyurus
praecox ‘Rubriflorus’ in early spring offer a contrast to the fluffy
white balls of blossom appearing on Prunus maackii ‘Amber
Beauty’. Elsewhere, containers of tulips including deep purple
‘Recreado’ and lemon yellow ‘Budlight’ can’t fail to raise a smile.
Relaxed Opening at Chelmsford Museum Is A Success
Chelmsford Museum's special
relaxed opening on Monday 26
March, as part of World Autism
Awareness Week, was a big success
and was enjoyed by children and
adult alike, and future relaxed
openings are already in the diary.
The Chelmsford Museum at
Oaklands Park reduced lighting and
sounds to ensure a suitable
environment for those on the
autism spectrum. The theme for the
relaxed opening was ‘Victorian Life
and Inventions in Chelmsford', with
the opportunity to experience and
smell kitchen herbs and spices,
handle mystery kitchen objects, try
some hands-on washing-up of
Victorian objects, as well as
following an ‘eye-spy' picture trail
around the museum's galleries. A
comfy ‘chill-out' area was also
available for those needing time to
relax. The Mayor of Chelmsford,
Councillor Duncan Lumley, also
paid a visit to the relaxed opening.
Chelmsford City Council's
Champion for Disabled Children
and Adults, Councillor Stephanie
Scott, said: "Places and events
which provide support for people
with autism and their families are
enormously valued and the move
towards greater accessibility at
Chelmsford Museum has been
positively received. In June 2017
Chelmsford Museum was awarded
by The National Autistic Society
the prestigious National Autism
Friendly Award. One of the first
museums in the country to have
achieved this status for the
welcome extended to children and
adults on the Autism Spectrum,
their families and Carers."
She added: "Chelmsford City
Council is now working to extend
the autism access project to other
cultural venues in the city and are
already providing relaxed
productions at Chelmsford City
Theatres. The first relaxed
production was the Snow White
Pantomime at the Civic Centre in
January this year. Future inclusive
events at Chelmsford Museum are
currently being planned and I am
delighted that the City Council is
considering more relaxed Civic
Centre Theatre performances
also."
The next relaxed opening at
Chelmsford Museum will be on
Sunday 23 September, 10am to 12
noon.
Over To You
South 22 Woodham Focus
South Woodham Focus
To the South Woodham Community
It is with great sadness that a dear friend of mine has recently
experienced some online abuse in a local community (SWF)
Facebook page. The online abuse and bullying she was
subjected too by local residents (and one from outside of the
town) was appalling and has left her and her family (including
her young son) extremely upset.
There is NO excuse for any form of bullying and online
harassment. Sadly, we know only too well what the effects of
inappropriate and threatening social media usage can have on
our young people. In this case, it was actually adults subjecting
my friend to insults and threats.
Unfortunately the police are helpless unless there are direct
threats to the persons welbeing and home. They can however
request that such posts are removed and all parties refrain from
posting answering posts. If online harassment and abuse
continues it can be dealt with legally through solicitors.
The bottom line here is that we as adults must set examples to
our young people, ensuring that social media is used
appropriately and there is no verbal abuse and harm inflicted
on others and their family. Too many young people (and adults)
have suffered the consequences and live with th effects of a
online bullying from such ‘trolls’. IT MUST STOP.
