"KIND OF BLUE" SEES "STARDUST"

"Kind of Blue" (a local modern jazz group) are in the hall of the

Bell Woodham Ferrers on the Monday 25th November, 8.30-11pm.

This month, among our other jazz "classics", we will be featuring

the works of Hoagy Carmichael, an American singer, composer and

actor, who lived from 1899 to 1981.

His songs were known for their sophisticated harmonies and

impressionistic words, painting musical pictures of the American

countryside (e.g. "Stardust" and "Skylark").

Although written in the '20s and '30s, they were excellent vehicles

with which musicians of the modern jazz era, were able to practise

their art.

One of them ("Georgia on my mind") was to become a massive hit

for Ray Charles in the '60s.

If you want to hear some of the best of American music, then come

to the Bell on the 25th. Sandwiches and entry are free.

On the first day of Christmas

Start your Christmas with an entertaining afternoon in the hall of

the Bell on the 15th of December 2.30-5 pm.

This will be an event 2 halves :

1) Our normal set list of Jazz "classics"

2) The second half will consist of a Christmas "Singalong"

These will be separated by a break, allowing us to partake of Sue's

delicious buffet.

This is a charity event, so there will be entry by a £5 ticket,

proceeds to cancer and Crohn's disease.

Hurry for they are going like wildfire!!!

So if you want a break from the Christmas "mayhem", buy a ticket

Caring for dogs with

arthritis

Being stiff and sore in the mornings, reluctance to walk as

far as normal, not jumping up as usual, panting and

occasional groaning are all subtle signs that your dog may

be suffering from arthritis. This is characterised by

inflammation of one or more joints and can be incredibly

painful. This is because the normal smooth joint surface

becomes jagged and rough, making movements ‘crunchy’.

Most cases can be diagnosed during a consult, while others

may require x-rays. Arthritis is a degenerative disease,

meaning it will get worse over time and cannot be

reversed. Therefore, it is important to start treatment early

to help slow down its progression. There is no ‘one size fits

all’ treatment method, so you need to work alongside your

vet to establish a combination of the following that best

suits you and your pet:

• Anti-inflammatory drugs – These tackle swelling in the

joint and can dramatically reduce pain. If needed long

term, regular blood tests are advised to check liver and

kidney function as these organs are responsible for

breaking down and excreting these drugs.

• Weight management – The heavier the animal, the more

strain on the joints. Therefore, an easy way to help relieve

symptoms is to make sure your dog is not overweight. This

is achieved by diet management and controlled exercise.

• Controlled exercise – Long walks can make your dog very

sore the following day. It is better to break up that hourlong

walk into multiple 10-15 minute walks.

• Hydrotherapy/physiotherapy – Supervised swimming at

a hydrotherapy centre allows your dog to exercise with

minimal strain on the joints. It also strengthens the

surrounding muscles which will then support the affected

joints. Physiotherapy manages pain through heat therapy

and massage.

• Acupuncture – Acupuncture involves the use of

specialised thin needles to stimulate certain nerves in the

body. It can be really useful for chronic pain where other

methods of pain relief are not quite enough. This is a

service that we offer here at Blaircourt.

• Nutraceuticals – Supplements containing glucosamine

and chondroitin, which occur naturally in connective tissue

and cartilage, can help replace that which is lost during

arthritic changes. They work well alongside other

therapies.

Many animals are very stoic, which means that just because

your pet isn’t yelping or limping, it doesn’t mean they are

not in pain. Even the most crippled dogs can still have an

appetite and be enthusiastic for walks. If you think your

pet may have arthritis, or you wish to explore some of the

options above, please phone the clinic to book a

consultation on 01245 324437.

"WE REMEMBERED THEM"

The Address was given by Olive Anstead, following the lighting of

candles by those present, for the Fallen, those in current conflicts,

those in unenlightened lands, those in slavery and refugees.

Member Daphne Bilney read a poignant "A Soldier's Prayer"

written by Gerald Kersh, while serving in the 8th Army. Familiar

hymns from past and present added to the tribute made, and the

service concluded with a blessing and the National Anthem.

Thank you. God bless you.

Olive Anstead (Divisional Envoy)

Salvationists were pleased to attend the Royal British Legion's

Remembrance Service on Sunday 10 November and lay a wreath

in honour of the Fallen. The service brought our community

together and was a worthy tribute to our armed forces. Thanks is

due to all those who worked efficiently to accommodate everyone

in the new venue of the Church of the Holy Trinity, and contributed

to a notable occasion for us all.

On the following Tuesday, The Salvation Army held a Service of

Remembrance in the Evangelical Church, Hullbridge Road at 2pm.

This has now become a regular opportunity for those who cannot

attend the main town's event to pay tribute to and honour those

lost in conflict and family members. The service was arranged and

led by Divisional Envoy Olive Anstead, assisted by Home League

Secretary Mary Parker. Members read prayers, and Mary Attrill

read the Scriptures from Ephesians chapter 6. Home League

member Florence Emmett, Veteran of World War 2 Royal Air Force,

led the Act of Remembrance, wearing her own, and the medals of

her late Husband, Dennis. The Last Post was played on a recording

made many years ago by the late Envoy/Bandmaster George H

Anstead, whose eldest grandson, Steven, plays the Last Post at

the town's annual Remembrance Service. George served from

1940 to 1946 and was engaged in the India/Burma Campaign; he

knew Kohima and lmpal.

Tired old town?

I have lived in South Woodham Ferrers for nearly 20 years and am

totally fed up of all the grumbling and petty moaning in the Focus

about the new Sainsbury’s/Medical Centre development. It is a

GOOD thing that we are finally improving this tired old town

rather than remaining in the 1980s and finally providing tax payers

with decent facilities for all ages. Asda has had many years of

monopoly on the town with unattainable rates for small businesses

forcing shops and restaurants into closure, with the added insult

of an absolutely abysmal service and selection in their store(s). It

is about time and well overdue – they have had more than enough

time to improve. There is a reason why the BP/M&S does so well

– customers LIKE it and LIKE the choice. If you don’t LIKE it then

don’t shop at Sainsbury’s and perhaps find something else to do

with your obvious spare time rather than constantly moan about

road markings and roundabouts etc. May I suggest volunteering,

which is a great, constructive way to actively help others if people

do have so much spare time? Yes, the roadworks were

inconvenient but they are finished now so we need to move on.

Perhaps if we were more positive and proactive in this town rather

than constantly moaning, we would have more businesses and

opportunities bought into the town for all ages to enjoy. I resist

going anywhere near Asda now due to its depressing state and

endless take-a-ways and restaurants nearby, perhaps those

moaning about the new fresh developments already in place could

take some proactive action with the town centre and direct their

frustration at Asda who own that area…. But as we all know it’s

easier to moan than actually do something positive.

Medical Centre opens but there are

no crossings!!!

Is anybody actually being held to

Over to

you...

I presume I will have to take a bus into Chelmsford to enquire details

for an onward bus service. Previously it was just a short walk into the

centre of town.

It does look like we, in South Woodham Ferrers, have to put up with

a second rate service, arranged by second rate Administrators and

their second rate decisions.

I must add that all of the front line NHS staff I have dealt with in the

last 4 years have been excellent, but I feel that they are being let

down by very poor Management.

Who are these people? Are they actually paid for making messes?

Can we get rid of them?

P.G. Creech

Medical Centre Access

I would like to add my own comments about the access to the new

Medical Centre and how the people of South Woodham Ferrers have

been badly let down by the planning authorities.

Dr John made reference to parking problems at the Medical Centre

and I have heard someone saying that they found it impossible to

find a parking space there. When I looked round there on Tuesday I

could not see a single free parking space and noted several vehicles

parked outside of any allocated spaces.

In the past references have been made to the provision of an

improved bus service to the Centre but it is impossible for buses to

gain access to the site; instead buses have to stop on Burnham Road

so that any staff or patients have to become pedestrians along and

across Burnham Road and during peak periods there will be about

2,000 vehicles an hour moving along that road which equates to

about one vehicle every 2 seconds. There has been a traffic island

built in the middle of the road by the bus stops so that will become

a crossing point for pedestrians even though crossing lights are not

there but are placed further away from the centre close to the BT

building.

I spent an hour during the rush hour period in the bus stop from

07:20 on Tuesday morning and counted 1,953 vehicles passing. It

was literally only in the last two minutes that the traffic flow slowed

down so that I could then safely cross the road, via the traffic island,

to the Medical Centre.

It has already been noted that the lights at the crossing were not

operating on Monday morning and they were still inoperative on

Wednesday evening. Contrast this with the situation in Chelmsford

when a set of lights across a busy road failed but they were fixed in

24 hours.

So to sum up; Burnham Road can be a dangerous road for

pedestrians and the local planning authorities have failed in their

responsibilities and have let the people of SWF down very badly.

Health Centre

D C Lane

I, like many others, have Type 2 Diabetes, in my case for 4 years.

Every year i have a Diabetic Eye Test, which used to take place in the

Health Centre in South Woodham Ferrers.

I was under the impression that the ‘badly sited’ new Health Centre,

was to bring everything together under one roof.

I have just been advised that I have got to travel to Chelmsford for

this test. The medical facility appears to be, not in the centre of

Chelmsford, but a few miles NNW of the city centre. There is no

explanation of how to get there, no bus services mentioned etc, but

there is a note that as the eye drops used, may effect your vision,

you should not drive immediately after the test.

As there does not appear to be a direct bus service and I can’t drive,

Burnham Road between A130 and

Shaw Farm roundabout

There has been an uneven road service between the A130 and shaw

farm round about for as long as I can remember. I went onto essex

county council web site and complained about certain parts of it.

They said that they would send an inspector to see if it needed repair.

A week later I had a reply saying that no repair was necessary . Isn't

it funny how a 50mph speed limit is now in place.

Couldn’t care less black Clio driver

C R Thorogood

I would like to “thank” the woman driving the black Renault Clio car

down Albert Rd on Monday 11th November, for breaking off my

driver’s side mirror. The whole thing was seen by a passer by, even

the fact that you hit it, then put your hand to your mouth (obviously

in shock and absolute horror at what you had done), and just drove

on down the road. Firstly why were you driving SO close to a parked

car and WHY didn’t you stop and try to find out who the car

belonged to, to make an apology? I appreciate it probably was an

accident, but the fact remains that you did damage my vehicle and

just drove off. I wonder if you would be very happy if the boot was

on the other foot, and someone knocked off your driver’s side mirror

leaving YOU with a bill and didn’t care enough to apologise or try to

make the situation better. I can only suggest that you either get some

glasses or at the very least learn some manners and take some

responsibility for your actions. Please endeavour to drive more

vigilantly in future! I am very upset that my vehicle was damaged

through no fault of my own, whilst being parked at the side of a 30

mile per hour speed limit road.

I would also like to add, that whilst sitting, since this incident, in a car

as a passenger, parked up, that cars go “flying past” – probably not

at 30 mph but much more, and they miss the wind mirrors by just

centimetres (at speed) or launch out past a parked car in just seconds

before they are upon it, rather than waiting for oncoming traffic or

at least holding back before going past. I do think the Police should

take a look at Albert Rd traffic and the speeds and thoughtlessness

that occurs there and most probably many other places in Woodham.

It scares me, that if children or animals or even vulnerable people try

to cross the road that they may well be mown down. Drivers please

take care on residential roads, speeds are for the bigger, wider roads,

not our little old roads!

Candidate for

Maldon

Janet Dine

Janet Dine is a Professor

of International Economic

Development Law at Queen

Mary University of London. She

is a former barrister who

practiced at the English Bar dealing with criminal and

commercial cases.

Janet is acutely aware of the seriousness of the climate

emergency and the damaging effects of the current

economic system. Our persistent focus on economic

growth is devastating the planet and leading to enormous

inequality. Janet believes that humans must be custodians

of the planet, not plunderers of nature, and this is reflected

in her policymaking.

As the local voice for Green politics, Janet is desperately

concerned about poverty, international trade and the

degradation of the planet. Local issues are also of high

importance to Janet, who has lived in the Maldon

constituency for 10 years.

Among Janet’s priorities are:

• calling for a transparent new policy on social housing

• focusing on the renovation of existing homes, over the

construction of new ones

• improving the quality of transportation and increasing the

use of electric buses throughout the district

• supporting initiatives like insulation and the installation of

solar panels

• advocating for health, happiness and environmental

consciousness across the District

Janet said, “I am thrilled to represent the Maldon District

Green Party in this general election. My principles reflect

those of the majority at this time of climate crisis and

political uncertainty. I hope I can count on the support of

local residents in my attempt to improve our constituency

for all.”

DOES CANNABIS HELP MENTAL HEALTH? Cannabis is rarely out of

the news these days and some of the coverage gives the impression that

it can cure everything from in-growing toenails to 'bad wind'. A recent

headline in The Guardian claims: "Risks of cannabis use for mental health

treatment outweigh benefits." This was picked up by other news outlets

following publication in The Lancet of a study on the treatment of mental

health conditions using medical cannabis.

So is there anything in this? Bazian has checked it out for the NHS and

opines. "Medical cannabis is being increasingly used to treat various

conditions, including chronic pain, epilepsy and certain mental health

conditions such as depression and anxiety. There has been considerable

media coverage in recent years reporting people's difficulty in accessing

these medicines.

Now a large-scale review has looked at the evidence for the use of

medical cannabis to treat mental health conditions. Researchers said

most of the 83 studies they reviewed were small and of poor quality.

They found no evidence that medical cannabis improved depression,

psychosis, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), posttraumatic

stress disorder (PTSD) or Tourette's syndrome. Some trials

found a small improvement in anxiety symptoms, but the quality of the

evidence was very low.

The use of medical cannabis was also associated with side effects,

including worsening of mental health symptoms. There is currently not

enough evidence to support the use of medical cannabis to treat mental

health conditions. More high-quality research is needed.

We do know that regular use of "street cannabis" – especially the very

strong skunk kind of cannabis – can increases your risk of developing a

psychotic illness, such as schizophrenia."

So what's the bottom line? NHS advice is that: "It is important to see a

doctor if you are suffering from symptoms of depression, anxiety or any

other mental health condition. While there is currently no evidence to

support the use of medical cannabis for these conditions, there are many

safe and effective psychological therapies and medicines available that

are backed by strong evidence."

When I told my mom I wanted to grow up and be a comedian, she said

you can’t do both. Jimmy Carr

NOVEMBER is the time some of us chose to grow a moustache - the

'Movember' campaign aims to raise awareness of men's health issues,

such as prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and men's suicide.

This is also 'Lung Cancer Awareness Month' during which we are

reminded that some 75% of people are diagnosed at stage III or IV of

the disease, which is far too late. Early diagnosis greatly improves the

outcome - so healthcare professionals are encouraged to be on the alert

for the signs and symptoms of lung cancer so that their patients are

referred earlier into the lung cancer pathways.

There are fancy ways of picking up tumours early such as use of

"biomolecular markers, autofluorescence bronchoscopy, low-dose spiral

and high-resolution computed tomography, endobronchial

ultrasonography" etc ... so it's likely to be a rapidly developing field. The

'Holy Grail', though, would be a simple blood test that we could use in

general practice to make the diagnosis ... but we're not quite there yet.

Needless to say you should seek medical advice promptly if you suspect

you have the condition, particularly if you are a smoker. According to the

American Cancer Society, the most common symptoms of lung cancer

are:

A cough that does not go away or gets worse.

Coughing up blood or rust-coloured sputum (spit or phlegm)

Chest pain that is often worse with deep breathing, coughing, or

laughing.

Hoarseness.

Weight loss and loss of appetite.

Shortness of breath.

Feeling tired or weak.

MARIE CURIE has launched a major public facing campaign to

encourage more people to talk about death and dying, saying that: "All

too often families feel deeply unprepared and distressed when facing

the last chapter of life, either for themselves or their loved ones. Our

new campaign aims to support people and their loved ones to have

conversations, wherever stage they may be at. To talk about what’s

important to them and their future planning, for when the time comes."

M.C. goes on to explain that: "Death and dying is still widely a taboo

subject in our society and because of that, many of us feel deeply

unprepared and distressed when having to face end of life. The end of

life journey can feel uncharted, chaotic, painful, frightening, for ourselves

and our loved ones. But talking and feeling as prepared as possible for

the end of life can make a difference in the experience we have when

we come to face it either for ourselves or our loved ones."

According to M.C. the underlying problem is that many people "may not

know where to start" or what may be helpful to them to talk about in

order to plan and prepare for a good end of life.

There is also emphasis on supporting healthcare professionals to give

end-of-life care. My experience of this was somewhat atypical by today's

standards - but, by and large, those on the receiving end seemed to like

it. It mostly worked well ... in most cases, I'd known the patient and the

family for years so we just slipped seamlessly into the terminal care

phase. Decisions were made by consensus.

I'd give them my mobile number so they could contact me directly -

including in the evenings and at weekends (but not while I was asleep.)

This was not an encumbrance because, by the end of my career, we were

on first name terms with most of our patients. I could, therefore, deal

with most eventualities in a matter of minutes whereas somebody new

to the situation would take forever to sort things out. One of the most

important roles was simply to boost the morale of the nearest and

dearest who often felt they were floundering even when they were doing

a great job.

As for district nurses - we had a really good team based in SWF. They

knew all the patients and they worked well together ... but they were

so messed around/badly treated that, one by one, they left. For

example, their base was transferred from Woodham to Maldon without

any discussion with the local clinicians - I ended up giving them a key to

the surgery so, at weekends, they didn't have to eat their sandwiches in

the car or drive back to Maldon for an attenuated lunch break. We

'progressed' from face-to-face contact with our colleagues to the new

anonymous/impersonal system beloved of the 21st century NHS.

Everything was done via a call centre - there was virtually no direct

interaction.

As for the patient's perspective, once in a blue moon things went a bit

pear shape. The worst example involved a lovely lady, a retired

headmistress, whose husband was terminal. After weeks of having

different bright eyed people turning up on her doorstep every day

("Hello I'm Sally" - "Hallo I'm George" - "Hello I'm Sue" ... she had no

idea who or what they were) they all converged on her house the day

before her husband died. I believe she counted at least 20 people ... she

ran out of teacups! At around 5.30pm the last of them left - leaving her

exhausted. Having a small number of people you get to know well is the

answer.

This was a very unusual state of affairs, however. Usually the healthcare

professionals involved, including those from the hospice, worked well

together as a team. Many of us prefer to die at home and, in the right

circumstances this can be beneficial to the families left behind as they

rightly feel that they have done everything possible.

My friend was told by her doctor that she was morbidly obese… as if

she doesn’t have enough on her plate! Jimmy Carr

PR SCARE: Now that the dust is beginning to settle on the opening of

the Crouch Vale Health Centre, the building itself seems to have been

well received thus far. Patients have also applauded the sterling efforts

of the staff to overcome the impossible odds created by the NHS

'decision makers' who, from their ivory towers in some distant universe,

decreed the manner in which the move was to be conducted. 'Lions led

by donkeys' is the one expression used in this context that is printable.

As for public relations, however, the NHS has done for PR what

Chernobyl did for the reputation of nuclear power. After a very long

period of silence, the 'communications' team made every effort to keep

the decision makers well out of sight, thereby shutting down debate,

and making informed discussion about key areas impossible. The icing

on the cake was the decision to sneak in the closure of the Health Clinic

in the town centre.

All in all, the matter was handled so badly that rumours are circulating

that Prince Andrew was commissioned at the outset to plan and

coordinate the task of winning over public opinion. The worry is that,

having got his foot in the door, the local NHS will continue to make use

of his services. Fortunately, however, a spokesman for The Palace has

brought a measure of reassurance: "We have locked him in a cupboard

under the stairs and won't be letting him out for the foreseeable future."

Angels

Hark the Herald Angels sing Glory to

the new born King, Peace on earth

and mercy mild, God and sinners

reconciled.

Most of us will know that verse from

a well-known Christmas Carol, so

with Christmas fast approaching it

seemed right to bring you this news

but concentrating on a particular aspect of this.

The words point to other beings created by God who were

with Him at an early stage. The Angels.

At various points in History (His story) God has sent these

powerful beings to interject, bring messages of hope and

to help mankind, but like us they are created beings who

Worship God and do various works for him, they should

not be worshipped, only God should have that honour.

In the Christmas Carol we sing about how the Angelic

hosts proclaimed the birth of the Lord Jesus Christ just

over 2000 years ago. It was a special birth as it was to be

a gift directly from God of his own Son who was born of

Mary by virgin birth, it was God himself in human form,

with a body just like ours, but with a special purpose, he

left his heavenly glory behind.

Why not come and join us at

Windle Court for our Knit and

natter group ?

We get together every Monday

morning at 10.00 -12.00 for a nice

cuppa and a chat.

You will be made to feel most

welcome !

So don’t sit at home feeling lonely,

come and join us, call 01245

425980 for more information.

Jesus (which also means Emmanuel or God is with us) was

to be the Christ (or Messiah) the Saviour of his people. The

rest is History, he grew up and did many miracles, healed

the sick, raised the dead and cast out demons (fallen

angels).

Jesus fulfilled the prophecies within and Jesus was without

sin, but took on the sin of the world and died in our place

on a wooden cross, he then arose from the dead 3 days

later and was seen by many before rising up to sit on God

the Fathers right hand on the throne of Heaven.

He will be coming back again as promised but not as a little

baby but as the mighty King of Kings and Lord of Lords,

with the Saints and Angelic armies accompanying him,

these things were foretold in the Bible Wow what a

promise from the Bible. And it’s relevant to our lives today.

So, Angels were present at his birth, they were present to

minister to him throughout his time on earth, I challenge

you to check out this in the Gospel stories from your Bible.

Then when he arose on the third day, angels were at his

empty tomb to confirm to his disciples about his

resurrection. And when Jesus finally ascended up into the

clouds, two angels appeared there and advised the

disciples to not keep looking up but that Jesus would

return in a similar manner when he comes again, but

meanwhile they were to go and wait as instructed for

power from on high to be sent to them. This was the Holy

Spirit the third person of the trinity also God which was to

be sent from God the Father and the Son to all those who

believe in Jesus and receive him as their Lord and Saviour.

The Holy Spirit empowered the disciples who then started

the early Church, which continues in various forms today.

You do have some of these in your Town, I’d recommend

seeking one out and finding out more.

NEW BOWLERS TROPHY AT JACKS INDOOR

BOWLING CLUB LATCHINGDON

On Sunday the 10th October Jacks held their inaugural new

bowlers trophy. There were 16 entrants and to qualify as a new

bowler they had to have been bowling for less than 2 years.

The Derick Bell New Bowlers Trophy was purchased with part of a

legacy left to the club by a long time member and resident of

South Woodham Ferrers, Derick Bell .

Pictured above is the winner, Eddie Armario, (also a Woodham

resident) receiving the trophy from club President Stuart Harvey.

All the contestants received a small gift from Stuart and Tea and

Cake was enjoyed after the tournament.

SWF RIFC WEEKLY ROUNDUP

South Woodham Ferrers 1XV v Southwold

South Woodham Ferrers played host to high flying Southwold this

Saturday, losing out to the visitors by the narrowest of margins. After

what tuned out to be a rather stodgy game the result turned on a

few moments of ill-discipline. The home side lost 8 points to 9

despite being ahead for most of the game.

The game opened with the visitors on the attack as the home side

took a while to get into their stride, Southwold opening the scoring

with a penalty kick. The score seemed to wake the home team up

and they were soon on the attack themselves. Strong defending

from Southwold kept them at bay until Alex Baker evened the score

with penalty.

Most of the play was coming from the home side and they were

finally rewarded with a well worked try from Terry Stiffell. The

conversion attempt grazed the post but went wide. The half ended

with home team deservedly ahead 8 points to 3.

For the casual supporter the second half would have been a

disappointment as the two teams vied for control of the game. Much

of the game was played around the centre line with both packs

locked in an arm wrestle. Woodhams attack looked strong when the

ball was spread wide but there was always someone there to make

the last tackle.

Southwolds attack never really looked like breaking the line and it

seemed like the points were in the bag for Woodham. This was not

to be and in the end the game hinged on two late infringements by

the home team, Southwold taking full advantage by converting the

resulting penalties.

With only a few moments left in the game Woodham were again on

the attack and managed to get themselves into threatening position.

A penalty awarded for a high tackle could have given them back the

lead, but the ref called the advantage over as the lads tried to press

for the full seven points.

U15’s v Basildon

Sunday saw Basildon’s U15’s make the short journey to SWF for the

next round of the Essex Cup Competition. From the kick off, it was

clear that Basildon had improved their game from the last time we

played them. They were moving the ball well, going forward and

putting pressure on SWF and it was only thanks to a tremendous

defensive effort from the lads that kept them from scoring in the

open salvos of the match. However, SWF started to get into their

rhythm and with the ball finally ending up with Joe, he raced forward

to score. 5-0. Now with SWF starting to control the game, further

scores came from Zac and Brad (x2) and conversions from Harrison

(x2) to make the half time score 24-0 SWF.

The second half saw Joe score and Max convert to make it 31-0 to

the home team. It looked like it was going to be whitewash but

Basildon were having none of it. Having kept them from scoring in

the previous two meetings, this time Basildon kept their heads up,

got on with playing the game and scored five minutes into the

second half. 31-5. Their new found self-belief soon saw them

throwing everything at SWF but the lads stuck at it and through Joe,

scored to make it 36-5. Basildon scored next to make it 36-12 before

Brad scored and Harrison converted, making it 43-12.

Basildon scored two more tries and converted one adding another

12 points to their final tally. Further tries from Brad and Joe came

before a great solo try from Tom saw him speed 70m to dot down.

With a last play try from Zach, and two conversions from Mason and

Ryan, the final score was 71-24 SWF. This was no means an easy

game for SWF despite the score line. Basildon applied pressure,

never gave up and had improved immensely since the last time we

played them and full credit has to be given to them to making this a

great contest on the day and we wish them well for the rest of the

season.

U13’s v Brentwood/Billericay 2

Woodham turned up in great spirits today and were unlucky not to

0South Focus Woodham Focus

South Woodham Focus 25

claim the record for fastest try in history after a perfect kick off by

James Skelt was chased and won by Dan Williams who then drove it

over the line within the first 3 seconds. Unfortunately, the eagleeyed

ref apparently saw a knock-on and the try was disallowed but

it showed the boys what they could do if they believed in

themselves.

George Tickner put in a cracking shift by pressuring his counterpart

scrum half throughout the match inducing many knock-ons due to

his constant harassment. Tom Woolard stepped up in a similar

fashion and had the game of his life. His tackles gave cause for the

opposition to avoid his channels because every time they went down

Tom’s wing, there he was imposing his will by driving in the tackles

and contesting every ruck forcefully. Such was his performance that

he was unanimously nominated by every coach at South Woodham

for man of the match.

It seems that Woodham came into their own today with every player

stepping up and giving the performance of their lives. As such, they

camped in Brentwood / Billericay’s half until following unremitting

pressure, a penalty was awarded to Woodham. Ball went to Big Joe

McClure who did what he does best by running at them with speed

and force to drive through for the first try.

A beautiful run by James Skelt, wrong stepping 2 players and

drawing in a 3rd before off-loading to Ewan who once again was in

the right place at the right time. Ewan found both his speed and

self-belief to beat the opposition full back who just didn’t have the

legs to get to him before scoring a superb try.

Another crunching tackle by Noah Watkins, saw the ball spill out and

the quick reactions of Hayden Allen saw him scoop up the ball and

run it over the line and took the score to 3-1.

A great run by Nathan Davies who drew the opposition over to the

left and presented well led to very quick ball. With the right

exposed, the team showed great vision by immediately pushing the

ball out wide right and capitalised on the overload with Dan Williams

running in a really well worked, intelligent team try taking the score

to 4-1. Another good individual run saw the opposition claw back a

try to make it 4-2. Another massive tackle by Tom Woolard, led to a

turnover that was capitalised on by Dan Williams who ran in another

try taking the score to 5-2. The try was good but the tackle that led

to it was beautiful to behold.

With James Skelt coming off due to injury, Lukian Wall-Line stepped

up and showed great leadership keeping the team on the boil. A

promising kick by James Hallett led to a chase and crunching tackle.

Josh Jasper cleared out the ruck with such effect that the opposition

had to come in from the side conceding a penalty in the process.

Nathan Davies takes the ball into contact, offloaded to Dan Williams,

into a ruck with Nathan clearing out, ball passed out wide to the

other side of the pitch for another intelligent team try with Big Joe

McClure finishing well and taking the final score to 6-2.

U12’s v Billericay Away

The boys received a very warm and muddy welcome at Billericay this

Sunday. Soon after kick off, Kenny B ripped the ball superbly before

passing to Charlie. First try to South Woodham. Dan, yet again,

playing his part as scrum half enabled Byron to make a great run

before being tackled into touch. Following some wonderful passing

and receiving, Josh ran in the second try.

Archie made some good ground and with training for the team in

passing and receiving paying off Kenny B drove over for Woodham’s

third try. The boys seemed determined to show much more cohesive

play. Byron kicked the ball and followed it up to tackle the receiver

– great running! Billericay then pushed forward successfully to score

their first try. Josh made a great steal before the ball was turned

over. Half time score 3-1.

As the pitch became further churned up, play became a bit scrappy

but Alfie made a fantastic tackle and rescue kick from the try line.

Jack C made a valuable tackle and Thomas showed his great

strength of consistently rucking and following up. Amazing passing

and receiving across the width of the pitch enabled Josh to run in

the fourth try. More ground gaining runs from Archie and Kenny R

FOCUS ON SPORT

making forays into tackling, saw Byron make a good run before

passing to Jack C who drove over the line to score. Before long,

Billericay pushed back hard from the kick off to catch the Woodham

boys napping, making the score 5-2. Kenny B made an excellent

tackle into touch, giving Josh the opportunity to run towards the line

before passing it to Dan to score. Billericay then ran in two more

tries before the final whistle.

Training had a great impact – passing and receiving was strong this

week. Thank you to our coaches who give up their time for training

and matches. Full-time score 6-4.

U9’s v Billericay Away

The U9’s travelled to Billericay for their away match this week. Our

hosts were very welcoming and everyone showed great

sportsmanship on and off the pitch.

With the weather turning colder, the team first got warmed up with

some quick running exercises and passing practice.

Our boys played their socks off with two full 30min games, showing

great resilience. Their tackling showed great improvements this

week overall and they were finding the spaces better. The softer

ground allowed the boys to get properly muddy for first time this

season and both teams had a great morning of rugby.

U8’s v Billericay Away

Sunday the U8s were welcomed by Billericay at their home ground

for a very muddy match!

The team was split in two due to numbers and to enable them to run

around and keep warm.

Craig’s side had a brilliant defence with Amelia leading the way and

great running and passing in attack by all seven players.

Bully’s side showed some brilliant skill to score some awesome tries.

Great passing between the two Hayden’s and they all used the width

of the pitch well - with some really fast running up the field!

Weekly News and Results Roundup

U7 Eagles Men's Section U7 Wolves

Two great results for our first and

reserve teams this weekend,

with wins for both. The first team

won 2-1 against Hannakins in the

cup, to progress to the 3rd

round, with the reserves in

league action v Seaxe. Our first

team are cementing their place

in their first season in the

premier division this year and our

reserves are causing a stir in their

first season as men, just one

point off of the promotion slot in

Div 3.

The Eagles made it 2 wins in a

row today with their best

performance of the season. After

drawing with Heybridge last time

out we knew it would be a tight

game. End to end stuff in both

halves made for an even game.

The boys dislayed some brilliant

passing today along with a 'never

give up attitude' resulting in a

well deserved win. MOTM today

was Harry for his great saves,

with parents awards going to

Oliver. Well done everyone!

Another brilliant performance

today. The pitch was extremely

small plus being cold and slippery

made it all the more harder, but

the lads showed their resilience

and were relentless today with

not letting up at all. We did not

give them any room to play (of

what space there was on that

pitch) and our football was

brilliant. Great to see goals from

all over the pitch today - well

done everyone. We also love the

mini dug out!

Christmas Fayre 2019 - Thank you to everyone who visited us on Saturday. As always it's great to see so many of you and we

were extremely busy all afternoon. The club stall was awarded as 'Highly Commended' for the 2nd year running. We will

definitely be going for the win next year! We sold out of most of the merchandise we had on sale and completely run out of

the free Mulled Wine and Baileys that our members enjoyed. The club will be restocking with merchandise and will hopefully

have a supply of items for the Christmas parties at Champions Manor.
