Dance Group Supports SSAFA
We have had a good year
attendance wise and we had
another good turnout at our
October dance. In light of this we
were able to make another
donation at the last event. At this
time of year, with our thoughts
turning to Remembrance Sunday,
we chose SSAFA (Soldiers, Sailors
& Airmen’s Families Association) as
our latest beneficiary. On this
occasion we were joined by Brian
Turner (Divisional Secretary) of
SSAFA. Brian provided us with a history of SSAFA and an
overview of the work carried out by them. This can range from
giving physical and emotional support to older veterans to
supporting serving personnel in the transition to civvy street, from
providing welfare services to the family members of the Armed
Forces community to helping cope with bereavement, injury and
other forms of stress and a whole range of other services. If you
wish to learn more about their activities please see the SSAFA
website ssafa.org.uk In addition to SSAFA, as we previously did
in the Lions Club and have done subsequently, we will also be
making a donation to our local Royal British Legion Club.
Holy Trinity Church Knit and Natter Group
We meet every second Monday in the month at the
Town Crier Pub Function Room and knit mostly for
charity.
12 O’clock for lunch and 1pm to 3pm for knitting.
Everyone is welcome for more information contact

KIND OF BLUE LOOKS FORWARD
TO NEXT YEAR
"Kind of Blue", a local modern jazz group, is looking forward to
new challenges:
We really appreciate those of you who have been supporting us in
the dark Monday evenings this year (attendances have risen
considerably), but listening to many of you who came to them, and
to the audience of the"jazz on a summer's day" concert, we are
going to change our "gigs" to Sunday afternoons 2-4.30, thus
making it easier to go home at a reasonable hour.
(Because of space, comfort and acoustic reasons we will be holding
these performances in the hall of the Bell, Woodham Ferrers).
Therefore we will be in the pub on the Sunday afternoons of 26th
January, 1st March and 29th March 2020.
Please put these in your diary.
Hopefully this experiment will work, and we will be able to extend
these times into the spring and summer months.
It will be dependent on the size of the audiences!!
Entry and sandwiches will be free.
If you cannot wait until then, we still have the end of 2019 to enjoy.
On Monday 25th November, our normal free "gig" will be in the
Bell, 8.30-11pm.
On Sunday afternoon 15th December, begin your Christmas
celebrations with our charity concert in the hall of the Bell.
For the princely sum of £5 (proceeds to Breast Cancer and Crohn's
Disease), you can take part in a concert of 2 halves:
Jazz (with some festive references, such as the Modern Jazz
Quartet's iconic arrangement of "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen")
Followed by an interval with a buffet and mulled wine.
The second part will include a "Christmas" singalong.
(This is an all ticket affair, please contact Dave 07774912083 and
the Bell 01245 320443. Hurry, they are going like hot mince pies).
Therefore, there is plenty to look forward to in the ensuing wintry
months.
Forget the dark evenings, and enter a world of bright entertainment
in Woodham Ferrers.

We have been really proud of how well our new intake of children
have settled in to Pre-School along with their enthusiasm on our
topic, ‘Marvellous me’. The children have been learning about each
other, their families and their five senses. It has been fabulous
watching them participate in lots of exciting new activities,
including food tasting, making magic potions and creating their
own musical instruments. The children also created a beautiful
family tree using their own handprints. Each child also brought in
a photo of their family and we were impressed with how
confidently they spoke about them during circle time. The photos
were then placed on the tree creating a fantastic display.
The children have also been making the most of the outside area;
exploring in our mud kitchen by making mud soup and cakes,
playing parachute games, riding bikes and scooters and painting
some wonderful pictures.

WOW, 30 years!
"where have those years gone "
Sharon, salon owner of Jagged Edge, started out after completing
an apprenticeship from 1983 to 1986 with a large Essex salon
group. She moved on to a stylist position at a salon in South
Woodham Ferrers, progressing to a managerial role at the tender
age of 23. She then with no business experience, but with
exceptional hairdressing skills, risked opening her own salon.
In 1989, Jagged Edge was established, opening with 3 stylists and
2 juniors working a 69 hour week, Sharon created a professional
and reliable salon.
In 1999, the business was growing, plus now having 2 beautiful
daughters, to look after, she decided to move premises to a larger
property, across the way to our current address of 6 Guild Way.
Although going through turbulent times with the economic
climate, in 2009 and after 2 years of negotiations, Sharon managed
to purchase the freehold of the premises, allowing her to take on
a complete makeover and expansion of the salon for her team and
clientele to enjoy a sumptuous atmosphere, with a little help from
her supportive hubby Karl .
So now in 2019, she is celebrating 30 years in business!
The salon is constantly evolving, the team are always updating their
knowledge and techniques in all aspects of hairdressing. Staff
attending courses at London academies with 2 members of staff
achieving the highest accolade of L'Oréal Colour Specialists.
Sharon's staff have stayed loyal to her over the years, most
having been apprentices with her, who now are senior stylists,
married and have children of their own! The jagged edge team
are one big happy family.
Sharon would like to thank all the staff old and new, who have
worked with her in creating a highly professional salon. Also to all
clients, old and new, "Jagged Edge would not be here without
you" thank you.
So back to what Sharon's team do best "making people look
and feel beautiful" and of course ‘Partying’, cheers and here's to
the next milestone.xx

LET’S PLAY
A GAME
‘What if’ Game
How to Play:
Everyone playing gets a
piece of paper and a
pencil. Each person
writes down a question
that starts with "What
If" such as: "What if the
sky fell?". Then all of the
papers are collected.
Then they are handed
back to a different
person so that each
player has someone
else's question. Then
everyone answers the
question that is on the
page. (So, if someone
got "What if the sky
fell?" they could answer:
"It would be the end of
the world". Then papers
are collected once again.
And handed back out to
a different person. Now,
the fun begins....
Someone starts by
asking the question on
their page. The person
beside them reads the
answer on their page,
followed by the question
on their page and so on.
You could end up with
an answer like this:
"What if the sky fell?"
"We would eat chicken
instead?". And what's
funnier, sometimes the
answer makes a bit of
sense such as: "What if
the sky fell?" "We would
have to get another
one."

A SPLASH 2020
Get out your water wings and take the plunge in the 16th Swimarathon being staged by the
Rotary Club of South Woodham Ferrers. It commences on Friday 13th March and runs until the
afternoon of Sunday 15th March at the South Woodham Ferrers Leisure Centre Swimming pool,
Trinity Square.
The cash raised will help Little Havens Hospice and Moorfields Ophthalmic Hospital, Rotary
Charitable Trust and those charities as requested by the swimmers. Teams of six will be collecting
sponsorship and will be in the swim in relays throughout the weekend in an effort to swim
constantly for 55 minutes.
Organisations who put a team in and gain sponsorship for their swim can claim back 25% of it
for their registered charity. The most important thing is that it is fun. It could be a family event or people of any age getting together to
form a team. You can even renew your interest in swimming for fitness. It could be a team from your work or your club, church or school.
There are trophies for schools or youth organisations with most teams entered, teams with highest sponsorship, commercial companies
with most teams entered as well as medals for swimmers who “catch our eye”. These are awarded at the Swimarathon Committee’s
discretion. At the end of the day a lot of people get satisfaction actually raising money for special events.
If you want to take part, log on to the Rotary Club’s website www.swfswimarathon.co.uk team entry page to enter a team. After checking
the time slots available on the page you can enter your teams direct from the website or contact us via the “contact us” button on the

reinstated at this point for the safety of pedestrians accessing the
Health Centre."
Over to
you...
I heard this report of one incident which occurred on the day that the
new Health Centre opened: "My wife scouted the area today with
her electric wheelchair and informs me that the lights at the crossing
weren't operating and that she had to take her life in her hands
crossing the Burnham Road."
I looked at Essex Highways' website recently and came across the
claim that "Safety is at the heart of everything we do." Maybe they
should add: "Except in South Woodham."
Essex Highways' almighty mess
The Crouch Vale Medical Centre opened to mixed reviews on
Monday. The building itself seems to have met with widespread
approval as did the brave attempt by the staff of the three practices
involved to achieve the impossible task set for them by 'the powers
that be.' I refer to the plan to close all the practices simultaneously,
moving everything to the new premises over the course of a single
weekend, whilst leaving nothing open in the town centre for the
benefit of the surprisingly large number of people who hadn't heard
the news and showed up at their old surgeries.
We have had experience of the complete lack of common sense on
the part of the shadowy figures known locally as 'the powers that be'
- those who make important decisions for healthcare in SWF far away,
behind closed doors. and usually without any reference to public
opinion. The mishandling of the closure of the Clement's House
Surgery is one example that many will remember - but, for those with
short memories, this will serve as a reminder.
It's likely that the new facility will enjoy a 'honeymoon period' as a
result of the hard work and dedication of the practice staff. That said,
there was a great deal of criticism of factors that were outside the
control of the practices involved - such as access difficulties and the
parking problem. With regard to access and the new roundabout,
you may well have seen the Town Council's robust response to the
request by Essex Highways for "comments you may wish to make"
on its proposals "by 8 November 2019" ... i.e. long after its
"proposals" had already been implemented.
South Woodham's Highwayman, the redoubtable Alan Brunning,
published yet another criticism of the deeply inadequate and entirely
unaccountable body known as Essex Highways in Focus recently.
Prior to the opening of the new Medical Centre, he also noticed the
installation of "dropped kerbs marking an informal crossing across
the Sainsbury's access road. As such there is no pedestrian priority
or safe access to the medical centre from the westbound bus stop,
Hullbridge Road or Brent Avenue."
He pointed out that: "A formal Zebra crossing was drawn in the
original planning application" but notes that "this has been
downgraded ‘to informal’."
Presumably a formal crossing was part and parcel of what was
approved when planning permission was granted. Maybe it has
disappeared because it has been subsumed under the almighty mess
that is Essex Highways' solution to the access problem at the
Sainsbury's site.
Alan Brunning is asking the town's representatives to "Find out who
approved this change and insist that a formal zebra crossing be
Medical Centre
Dr John
Having read many comments on this and the road layout structure,
it's time to have a say. Having past it a few times on the way by bus
to Chelmsford during the whole construction, I think that it's about
time we had a better and bigger medical centre that can cater for
much more things than previous in ways of health and surgeries. Yes
it's a much longer walk than 5 minutes for me but that's fine, so why
do people here grumble on it. As for Sainsburys, again about time
long overdue for a choice of supermarkets here and probably better
quality foods compared to Asda, and for me will be shopping there.
Also it seems there will be an Argos there, so double bonus. I'm sure
many are waiting to shop there and switch over to. For those that
grumbled on road works, yes they can be annoying at times and
especially when they dig up the road or pavement in the same spot
time and again in short periods of time, but needed to be done for
the new buildings. As for one letter writer saying about the pelican
crossing location, well should it be miles down the road instead and
shoppers play leapfrog across the road. For the sake of a few metres
as he has quoted, what's the impact difference. Has he also
personally gone into the road to actually measure with a ruler the
length of the zig zag lines as he says they are not required length.
Besides road safety is only compromised if there are potholes, sharp
objects littered about and idiot drivers and motorists.

I think we are so lucky to have such good and understanding Doctors
from Kingsway, Dr Mathews, Dr Kris & staff. I wish them the very best

Dog Waste
This is the third time I have had to write to the Focus about this
matter, concerning the dog walking public who PERSIST in putting
their dog waste in our shop (CUMMINS) litter bin. This bin has a large
notice on the top of it stating it is NOT for dog waste and as our staff
have to empty it, this disgusting habit has continued. If you are a
responsible dog walker and go to the trouble of picking it up then
please take to one of the appropriate bins, of which there are many
around SWF or take it home with you. I am sure you have noticed
we have had to tape up this litter bin this week until this disgusting
habit stops.
We will also be sending a copy of our CCTV to the council.
Many thanks Cummins Gandalf Ride

Get in the Christmas Spirit-German Style!
Visit an authentic German Christmas Market without ever stepping on the Eurostar……because it’s in Essex!
MEADOW CROFT GERMAN CHRISTMAS MARKET IS NOW IN ITS 5TH YEAR – AND
BIGGER AND BETTER THAN EVER
Open daily from 7th November – 23rd December
Why go all the way to Germany to experience an authentic German Christmas Market?
Meadow Croft Garden Centre (located near) Battlesbridge is once again hosting their now
hugely popular German Christmas Market and it’s even bigger than last year! Complete
with 30 hand-built stalls packed full of authentic German goodies, this year promises to
be an outing full of festive cheer (and German beer and glühwein of course!)
Meadow Croft do the travelling, so you don’t have to!
The Garden Centre Manager, Simon Charlick goes to Germany every year with a small
team to find new crafts and suppliers so that they can bring traditional hand-crafted
products to their customers. Many of the craftsmen they meet work in garden workshops
handed down from generation to generation, perfecting the most intricate Christmas
ornaments for everyone to enjoy. This year, you can browse stalls laden with authentic
German gifts ranging from Nutcrackers, stollen, a variety of advent calendars to Cuckoo
clocks, ‘Likor Ansatzmischung’ -a ‘liquor batch mix’ from an artisan bakers in Germany,
‘Winter Secco’ – which Simon describes as ‘a cross between Prosecco and Gingerbread in a glass’ – soap made from sheep’s milk, candles
and much more.
Feeling peckish, thirsty?
What could be more reminiscent of a Christmas market than a hot glühwein and a German sausage! Their staff will be happy to serve you
real bratwurst and sauerkraut, German beers, German soft drinks and hot authentic German glühwein. This year they have a stall dedicated
to German sweet treats - warm waffles, strudel, freshly baked gingerbread, chocolate treats and of course the delicious Schokokuss
chocolates.
They have two fantastic local singers entertaining us with live Christmas music on the following weekends - 14th, 15th, 21st and 22nd
December, if you aren’t feeling Christmassy enough, you will after that!
So, where can you find all this festive fun?
Meadow Croft Garden Centre is not the easiest place to find, but worth it when you do! They are on the Old Woodham Road, from the
Rettendon Turnpike going down towards the town of South Woodham Ferrers, in the wilds of rural Essex. Please don’t follow the signs
for Battlesbridge Antique Centre, whilst that is also worth a visit, they don’t sell delicious Bratwurst! If in doubt, you can always call and
speak to one of their lovely staff - 01245 320314 (option 3) during opening hours, email: meadowcroft@wdsmith.com or by messaging
their Facebook page:
https://www.facebook.com/MeadowCroftGardenCentre/
Meadow Croft hope you can join them for this lovely festive event, where the true spirit of Christmas really comes to life.

Millwood WI October Meeting
Maggi Piper was the speaker for our October meeting with a talk titled ‘Street Art’. Maggi is a London Blue Badge Tourist Guide.
Maggi began photographing things that made her smile. Maggi entertained us showing us her slides of the things she had
photographed including ‘Two mice and a piece of cheese’ in Philpot Street and a statue of Thomas Coram of the East India
Company who started the Foundling Hospital in the late 1700’s. Another slide was a photograph of an Arabian Bank which was
covered in symbols to do with the sea. Maggi wondered why and discovered that it had been the Oceanic Insurance Company.
We all had a very interesting evening looking and learning about Maggi’s slides.
Our trade stall was ‘Traidcraft’ selling Christmas cards as well as biscuits, chocolate, coffee and sugar and many other items.

Light in the Darkness
At this time of year it is easy to forget the warm summer behind us as we walk into the autumn of mists and shorter days. As a
teenager I remember that once the clocks had gone back I had to walk home from school in the dark. When I got home, as I was
the first member of the family to arrive, I turned on the lights and the electric coal effect fire heater. With those couple of switches
the cold dark house changed and became the warm and light home that was a comfortable and safe place. When my Mum was
there it was totally different, walking in to a greeting of ‘hello,’ the house was light and warm, with the possibility of bread
pudding in the oven and the aroma filling the kitchen.
Recently when visiting friends, we needed to walk along a lane to get to their house. At times the footpath was completely
obscured and it was only because we were walking towards the house lights that we remained sure footed. However, on leaving
as we walked away from the house we were plunged into darkness and had to take care where we walked to avoid mud and
hidden potholes. In this situation others would have taken out their mobile phone and used the torch to show the way. I reminded
myself to do just that the next time we came.
Sometimes life seems confusing and circumstances can be difficult. Knowing what to do and making the right choices can be a
struggle. Jesus said, “I am the light of the world. If you follow me you won’t have to walk in darkness because you will have the
light that leads to life.” John 8.12
By allowing the light of Jesus to live in us we are able to create a safe and comfortable place for others to share, and by walking
in the light we are able to avoid or negotiate the mud and potholes of life so we can see where to put our next step.

E-CIGARETTE DANGER WARNING. A few weeks ago I reported that Public
Health England had championed the role of e-cigarettes, which it claimed
were 95 per cent safer than smoking. There are, however, a few clouds
hovering over this 'new way' of smoking.
Zoe Tidman writing in the Independent, reports that: "Researchers have
made a breakthrough in determining exactly what could be behind the
mystery vaping-related lung illness which has killed 39 people in the US.
Vitamin E acetate, an oil, was found in every lung fluid sample from afflicted
patients tested by the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
As of last week, there had been over 2,000 recorded cases of e-cigarette,
or vaping, product-use associated injury (ECVPI) by the CDC. Most patients
said they had used vaping products containing THC, the high-producing
ingredient in marijuana, before falling ill.
This problem seems to have afflicted those who have been experimented
with 'dodgy products' rather than approved versions - so the message
seems to be 'be very careful what you put in your E-cig.'
NBC News has looked at another problem associated with these devices -
and one that has potential implications for all 'vapers.' "Smoking cigarettes
has long been established as a major cause of heart disease deaths; now,
there's growing evidence that electronic cigarettes may hurt the heart, too."
This story concerned two separate studies presented at the meeting of the
American Heart Association, where e-cigarettes use was shown to impact
on your cholesterol, as well as the body's ability to pump blood.
NBC reports: "In one study, researchers at the Boston University School of
Medicine compared the cholesterol levels among four groups of adults:
people who used e-cigarettes, people who smoked regular cigarettes, those
who used both products, and non-smokers. All 476 participants were
basically healthy and had not been diagnosed with heart disease. But those
who vaped, the study found, had higher levels of unhealthy LDL cholesterol,
on average, compared with non-smokers. And levels of healthy HDL
cholesterol were lower among people who used both traditional and e-
cigarettes.
A second, smaller study looked at how smoking either traditional cigarettes
or electronic cigarettes with nicotine impacted the heart's ability to pump
blood through the body at rest and during exercise. That research included
19 smokers in their 20s and 30s, as well as an additional small group of
people who didn't use either tobacco product.
Normally, blood flow increases during exercise. This was predictably
observed in the nonsmoker group, using a type of ultrasound imaging called
myocardial contrast echocardiogram.
Traditional cigarette smoking is known to reduce blood flow during exercise,
which was also observed in the study. After exercise, the study found, blood
flow returned to normal in smoking participants.
But the researchers found something surprising when they measured the
blood flow of e-cigarette users: Their hearts' ability to pump blood was
diminished both during exercise and rest."
risk of a heart attack and early death.
This is an important subject because raised blood pressure is known as "the
silent killer". It has earned this title because those who don't take steps to
keep their blood pressure within safe limits run a much higher risk of
dropping off the perch well before their time - so anything that helps to
avoid this eventuality deserves our close attention.
The excellent NHS 'Behind the Headlines' service has taken a look at the
'take your BP meds at night' claim and reports as follows: "This follows a
large trial carried out across general practices in northern Spain. It included
around 20,000 adults (aged 60 on average) with high blood pressure. Half
the people were told to take their blood pressure tablets at bedtime, and
the other half upon waking. They were followed up for an average of 6 years,
during which time around 1 in 10 experienced a heart attack, heart failure
or stroke, or died from cardiovascular disease.
The study found that people who took their blood pressure tablets at
bedtime had significantly lower night-time blood pressure and were 45%
less likely to have any one of these outcomes. The trial lends support to past
research with similar findings. However, the trial only looked at Spanish
people of a white ethnic background. It also did not look at the effect of
timing on specific blood pressure tablets. Therefore, as the researchers say,
further study is needed before we see if the advice on how to take blood
pressure medicines should change."
The conclusion drawn was that: "This is valuable trial investigating the best
time to take blood pressure medicines. It has particular strengths of a very
large sample size and long duration of follow-up, which is fairly rare for a
randomised trial.
It finds that taking medicines at bedtime lowers blood pressure during the
night and reduces risk of heart attacks and other cardiovascular outcomes.
They found this difference not only when looking at all events combined,
but each of them individually. This suggests that the timing of taking
medicines can make a real difference. This lends support to previous trials
that have had similar findings."
The bottom line is: "Unless you're taking diuretics (water tablets), which
could mean you have to get up a lot in the night to pee, there should be no
negative effects from taking them at night. But it's probably worth speaking
to a GP first before making any changes to how you take your medicines,
particularly if you're taking a few different medicines."
Don't rush to make an appointment now - particularly at such a busy time
for the SWF practices - if you've got a routine review appointment coming
up soonish then use that. And remember that a lot of the time it is practice
nurses/nurse practitioners who look after patients with blood pressure. I
imagine that some practices will, in time, come up with a 'blanket policy'
based on these findings and the results of subsequent research ... so keep
an eye on your practice's website.

Doctor: "I'm sorry but you suffer from a terminal illness and have only 10 to
live."
Patient: "What do you mean, 10? 10 what? Months? Weeks?!"
Doctor: "Nine."
NBC adds: "This is not the first time vaping has been found to impact (on)
blood vessel function. Research published in August by the University of
Pennsylvania also showed e-cigarette use reduced blood flow, and the effect
lasted for about an hour after vaping."
As with all innovations, users are part of an experiment because, self
evidently, the long term problems only become apartment in the long term.
The current belief is that lung cancer is likely to be less of a concern in vapers
than in cigarette smokers as there are less carcinogens in 'E-cigs'. Even this
assumption has come under scrutiny recently though. CNBC reports that:
"Exposure to nicotine from e-cigarette vapour causes lung cancer in mice,
according to new research from New York University. Funded by the National
Institutes of Health, the study is the first to definitively link vaping nicotine
to cancer. The amount of smoke the mice were exposed to was similar to a
person who’s vaped for about three to six years."
My advice to mice is, if you are offered an 'E-cig' by a stranger in a lab-coat
with a promise of as much cheese as you can eat, just say NO. My advice to
humans is: watch for developments. Short term use (as an aid to giving up
smoking) still seems like a jolly good idea. Long term vaping, however, may
not be quite as safe as the experts thought ... so carefully weigh up the
potential risks and review them as new evidence becomes available.
There’s no such thing as fun for the whole family. Jerry Seinfeld
COULD BLOOD PRESSURE TABLETS BE MORE EFFECTIVE IF TAKEN AT

THE BERLIN WALL. It's 30 years since the Berlin wall was demolished - but
for me the scars have yet to heal. At the time I was doing health reports for
TV AM and regularly being quizzed by the likes of Lorraine. This involved
coming up with a topical subject, chatting to a researcher on the day before
the recording whose notes were then used to frame the questions. The night
before the broadcast I had to drive down to a hotel near the studio (arriving
at about midnight.) A car was sent at around 4.30 to pick the 'doc of the
day' up and take him/her to the studio and thence to make-up (or 'Mission
Impossible' as it was called when it came to those of us who were
'telegenically challenged'.) I then did two live broadcasts - one at 6.30 and
one at 8.30 - before being taken back to the hotel to pick up my car in order
to return to the practice to do a day's work.
Thirty years ago I duly turned up on time only to find that the Berlin Wall
was being demolished - and the pictures were being shown on every screen
in the building. Nobody was at all interested in my carefully prepared
dissertation on piles - so, unable to share the joy of the occasion, I sat around
for 3 hours twiddling my thumbs and then set off home with my tail between
my legs.
There were other minor disappointments - once when Frank Carson was on
with me and I couldn't get a word in edgeways, and once when I was picked
up in Private Eye's 'Colemanballs' column for saying: "Premenstrual tension
is more common in women." (It was very early in the morning!) But it is the
pain I endured on the morning the wall came down that lives on.

South Woodham Ferrers RFC v Diss
RFC
Saturday 9th November 2019
South Woodham Ferrers made the trip to
Diss this weekend on the back of two
home wins and looking to gain their first
win on the road of the season. Sadly his
was not to be; the lads going down 31
points to 15 to a Diss team who’s attack
was incisive and clinical. The home side
made the most of their attacking chances
where the visitors coughed up the ball or
gave away silly penalties on their visits to
the opposition twenty-two.
SWF RUFC WEEKLY ROUNDUP
Diss opened the scoring with a penalty
early in the first half as the two sides
tested each other’s defence. Woodhams attack was starting to look
promising when a Diss managed to break through the line to score
the first of their four tries. Woodham hit back with a series of well
worked attacks and after two penalties found themselves on the
Diss 5 metre line. Diss were able to keep them out but with a scrum
under the posts Woodham looked like getting their first score.
Sadly, it was not to be; a knock on in the scrum enabled the
defenders to clear their line.
The home side scored their second before Woodham hit back with
a well worked try from the back of the scrum. Joey Dukelow
pounced on a ball chipped through the Diss defence to carry the
ball over the line.
The half ended with Diss on top 17 points to 5.
Some poor defending in the opening minutes of the second period
allowed Diss to draw ahead with a third try. The visitors then
enjoyed a period of ascendancy during which they scored a second
try from a dominant scrum, Jake Knowles touching down. Alex
Baker slotted the conversion and followed that with a penalty as
Woodham fought to get back on terms.
The last quarter of the game saw both sides testing each of others
defence but on each occasion the ball was either turned over or
stalled by a penalty. The game looked like fizzling out into a
stalemate until Woodhams Stuart Whatling was sin binned for a
high tackle on a falling Diss attacker. The home side took full
advantage and scored their bonus point try in the closing minutes
of the game.
ruck they scored again. Half times score was 35-10 to SWF.
The lad’s half time talk was to not to commit to the ruck, guard the
edges and get turn overs from the next one or two phases of play,
a tactic which worked well as they turned the ball over numerous
times in the second half. Brad opened up the scoring for SWF
making it 40-10. Clacton brought on some new forwards and
through pure strength and determination, they scored the next
two tries making it 40-20. Regrouping themselves after these two
scores against them, SWF had a lineout 10m from Clacton’s try line
and while SWF lifted a player in the air to look as if the ball was
coming to him, Oli was passed the ball at the front and went
steaming in to score. 45-20. Joe finished off the scoring with one
of his trademark runs from far out and made the final score, 50-20
to SWF.
Through good defensive work and decision making, SWF put
pressure on the Clacton team which resulted in a good number of
turn overs and opportunities to go forward. This was a good allround
team performance with all of the lads putting in an
enormous effort against a very physical side. Next week they have
Basildon, at home, in the 2nd round of the Cup.
Mini Section Observe 2 minutes Silence on Remembrance
Sunday
Both sides will have been disappointed with their performance,
handling mistakes or moments of ill-discipline saw promising
attacking moves halted. It seemed that neither side really hit their
straps but the visitors will be most aggrieved that they just couldn’t
hit the level of intensity that had seen them victorious in the last
two games.
U15 SWF RFC v Clacton RFC
On Remembrance Sunday, SWF U15’s hosted Clacton with all
showing their respect before the beginning of the game.
Having not played for four weeks since their first defeat of the
season to Rochford, hopes were high that the lads would bounce
back. The team could not have had a better start when from the
kick off the ball was caught, passed out to Joe who ran in 50m to
score. From the next restart this time it was Zach who returned the
ball and within three minutes the team were 14-0 up thanks to the
conversions by Will C. The next two tries were scored by Zach and
Tom and with the conversions from Will C, it was now 28-0. Clacton
now got into their rhythm and through good work from the
forwards, they got themselves on the score board. 28-5.
Woodham struck again; Zach scored again and Will C added the
extra’s. 35-5. The Clacton forwards upped their work rate again
and through a series of ‘pick up and goes’ from the base of the

BURNHAM TABLE TENNIS LEAGUE
Div 1 – West Maldon A have the Keys to Success
West Maldon A took a great leap forward towards the title this
week with a convincing 8-2 win over Cold Norton B. With a trio of
Gary and Daniel Young supported ably by Harry Keys this team will
be hard to stop this season. Both Daniel Young and Keys added
another hat-trick each and combined in the doubles for a perfect
evening. They remain on a 100% win rate this season but lag
behind current top man Duncan Taylor of Cold Norton A who has
played significantly more games and remains unbeaten too. Taylor
was on top form this week as they held Fambridge to a 5-5 draw
courtesy of his 3 wins, but the main story from that match was the
inclusion of the Fambridge Chief Exec and former top player Peter
Ballard. Mapledene A need a few big wins to pull themselves back
into contention so they will be frustrated at having only won 6-4
at Woodham A this week. Woodham had the good form of Capt
Dan Piglet, and star player Lee McHugh to thank as both racked
up a brace of wins. The most impressive being McHugh’s 3-2
victory over his recent nemesis Kevin Read. Read, and team mate
Babul Mcleod, also won 2 each, with Read taking the player of the
match award on countback. Stow A finally have a win under their
belt following their decisive 8-2 scoreline against fellow strugglers
West Maldon B. Ryan Pitt was on blistering form winning all his
singles in 4 sets – not good enough to be selected for the doubles
though as team-mates Gary Brignall and Richard Storey combined
to complete their own ‘soft’ hat-tricks (2 singles + the doubles).
The league is taking a predictable shape now with the A teams and
B teams congregating at the top, and bottom, respectively.
seems done and dusted already as Stow D plough on undefeated
and untroubled, with a 26 point lead after just 6 rounds of matches.
In Peter Chastin they have the division’s star player – with just 1
defeat out of 18 matches. With another player of the match award
Chastin led his team to a 7-3 victory over Woodham D. Woodham’s
new signing David Meah was on good form taking 2 singles and
combining with the wily Mike Burton for the doubles. West
Maldon D came away with a 6-4 win from a match where last
season’s ladies singles runner up Andrea Alleyne had to retire early
due to injury conceding 2 games to their opponents from Stow E.
West Maldon’s Gary Smith was undeterred and held his nerve to
win all his matches, whilst team-mate Noah Sage dropped his first
point of the season to the very experienced Richard Riebold. In
the first of the season’s St Lawrence derbies – the A team came
out on top with a 7-3 victory that propels them to 3rd place in the
league. David Siggins was their star player as he remained
unbeaten throughout. In the final encounter of the week – the
Stow F ladies team of Anne Mills, Jo Hart, & Jas Brown all won 2 a
piece to record a good 6-4 win, but none of them were able to
cope with the power of Jon Stevens who, along with Dad Ken’s
help in the doubles, won all the points for his team.
Woodham’s new signing David Meah
Div 2 – Stealth & Delf
Mapledene C are now top of division 2 following their 8-2 mauling
of 3rd placed Maldon C, with a strong line-up of Barrie Delf, Ben
Matthews, and Patrick White. Even Maldon’s junior sensation
Thomas Page could not thwart the Mapledene juggernaut as Delf
hit a hat-trick and Matthews and White both recoded braces.
Maldon’s Mark Shorney and his spinny serves just about got the
better of Matthews in a last ditch 12-10 5th set clincher. These
wins push Matthews into joint second place, with Maldon’s Mervyn
Perriman, in the averages league table. The Bandana Man Tim
Pulham holds top spot with 11/12 wins so far this season which
includes another 3 wins from his team’s 6-4 win over Blackwater A
this week. Maldon B cling onto 2nd place in the league and were
made to work very hard by the youngsters from the
Woodham C team – luckily Colin Napper was on top
form and recorded a solid hat-trick over 14 sets – in
fact there was not a single love game recorded on this
scorecard, with half the matches going to a deciding
leg – sounds like a late one! As predicted a fully
staffed Mayland A crew are creeping up the table and
this week’s 7-3 win against West Maldon C helps them
leapfrog a place or two. Steve Aspland was the main
man for Mayland with a perfect set of wins across the
singles and doubles encounters. In Gary Eames,
Maldon D have a player not fit for their venue – he is
far too tall and reachy – however this did not deter him
this week as he was able to use his huge frame to
defeat everything Cold Norton C had to throw at him.
Unfortunately his team-mates weren’t able to keep up
with Eames’ endeavours as they went down 4-6 with
Cold Norton’s Dave Hancox and Terry Hyland picking
up 2 wins a piece and combining for a very convincing
doubles win too.
Div 3 – Blackwater Storm hits Burnham
The most unexpected result of the week came from
the winless Blackwater B versus Burnham A – where
the 9-1 scoreline had to be checked twice to ensure it
was the correct way round. What a fantastic fillip for
the Blackwater team as both John Kuhl and Phil West
went undefeated all night, and a nod to Burnham’s
David Bateman who picked up his team’s sole point in
the last match of the night. In league terms this one

Weekly News and Results Roundup
U15 Phoenix - Thank you to Clare for a fantastic report!
On a bright November Sunday morn, an old man sits a while
Looking through old photographs, he can’t help but smile
They’re all there, all the boys, with hair cut short and neat
Uniforms of red, multi-coloured boots upon their feet.
An impeccably observed two minute silence was followed by a
radically different SWFU Under 15 Phoenix this week: a far more
confident approach, a more careful passing performance and a
determination not to concede as readily they had done in recent
weeks. In the glorious Rettendon sunshine, perhaps the thoughts that
went through the boys’ minds as they stood together.
They met as strangers but soon became like brothers to the end
Smiling at the camera, there could be no truer friends.
The old man’s eyes mist with tears as he remembers every face
Each of his Phoenix brothers and the matches which took place.
Given the date, the details of the game seem almost trivial: None of
the boys will remember the score, but what they will hopefully recall is
the sense of camaraderie and positive spirit which abounded today
with their Phoenix family.
I wish that I could tell the man that he should fear not
This soldier and his brothers will never be forgot.
We owe a debt of gratitude that we can never pay
Our country will remember them, on each Remembrance Day.
