‘KIND OF BLUE’ CHARITY PERFORMANCE
"Kind of Blue", a local modern jazz quintet; will next be in the hall
of Bell, Woodham Ferrers on Monday October 28th, 8.30-11.
We will be serving up our usual mixture of jazz "classics" and
songs from the "Great American Songbook".
As it is so near to Halloween, we are featuring some of the more
macabre numbers from that source, such as Nina Simone's "I'll put
a spell on you" and "Old Devil Moon".
Seasonal arrangements
If you want something different, near to Christmas, come to the
Bell on the afternoon of Sunday 15th December, 2-5pm.
"Kind of Blue" will be hosting a gig consisting of numbers from
our usual jazz repertoire in the first half, but will lead a "Christmas
sing-song" in the second, accompanied by Sue's delicious buffet
and mulled wine.
Because we are holding this in the afternoon, we are anticipating
a similar demand as we experienced at our successful "Jazz on a
summer's day", and, although we will be using the hall behind the
Bell, which is larger than the bars in the pub, entry will have to be
limited and subject to a £5 ticket (obtainable from the Bell (01245
320443) and Dave (07774912083)).
Book places quickly, for they will surely sell like wildfire.
Proceeds will go to "Breast Cancer" and Crohn's disease (there
will also be a raffle).
So to "kick off" the start of the festive season, make the short
journey to Woodham Ferrers on December 15th, have a fun
afternoon, and contribute to a worthwhile cause.
PS Just a reminder that next year, instead of performing on cold
and dark Monday evenings, we are moving our regular "gigs" to
Sunday afternoons, so that you can get home before sunset.
Details to follow.

NEWS
Well Bicknacre was certainly on the map for a few days, when the national media decided to report of the Large Dragon that appeared
on the side of the wall at the old Brewers Arms. Ben Davies, the chef/owner said “We received emails from people in Australia as the
BBC main web site featured Duncan, our dragon, it was great publicity for the opening although some locals took it a bit seriously”.
The venue opened on Friday 13th September and now is very much a restaurant with a small pub/bar. When asked what kind of food
was on offer Ben said, “I was trained to cook European food. So I would say French/European Bistro with a few British favourites”. “We
will be varying the menu, our lunch menu offers snacks, our A la Carte menu is quite varied and Sunday lunch is just that all with vegetarian
options ”.
With regards to reservation’s, you can always role up and try your luck but as many people have found out its best to book. The wine list
falls into Ben’s Dad department, David, who loves a glass of wine he said, “My wife and I socialise a lot and it’s amazing how many pubs
in the area are restricted on choices with their wines. One venue, who will remain nameless, I asked what wine choices were available and
was told just red or white (one of each!)”. “We are proud of our wine list available for the pub or restaurant with fine house whites, reds
and Rose by the glass, then for those who appreciate good wine how about a Chateau Cantenac or maybe a Poligny Montrachet? If fizz
is your chosen tipple anything from Prosecco to Crystal or maybe a vintage Dom Perignon?”
We asked Ben and David how business has been since the opening and Ben replied “the restaurant surprised us! When we expected to
be quiet, especially mid week, we have been full, & the pub drinkers are slowly coming back”. The venue has been dramatically
refurbished. It has a new look where some of the old regulars who don’t like change have found it hard to accept. However the pub is
now attracting lots of people from outside the area and it will take us a few months to rebuild a core customer base, which may include
some of the old regulars or maybe some new customers. “We are looking forward to the warmer weather. We have extended the beer
garden and there is lots of new seating front and back of the venue”. Ben added “We have been surprised the number of small parties
we have attracted! What was the old pool room is now a restaurant area and fits in 16ish for a sit-down meal or 25 to 30 for a buffet”.
“We have our own way of celebrating someone’s birthday which will delight the guests of the party and certainly the whole restaurant
knows about the celebration. You will have to experience it to find out what we do!”
Christmas is not far away and the Restaurant is taking bookings for all of December, including Christmas
day (2 sittings), Boxing day and a New Year ’s Eve gala night special menu 1 sitting and music for dancing.
Re special nights its early days but for the West Ham fans in the area there is a night with
Tony Cottee on November 20th, now on sale. There is also a list open for tribute nights
and a tasting night with fine wines and food to match so if interested please register your
name and number.
Ben said “What I would love to do on a Saturday night is a good meal and a cabaret you keep
your table for the night even if it was once a month but we are still trying to find our feet, our
customer base and get really established with people coming back on a regular basis”. Saying
that we have 13 couples who have been back every week since we have opened so we must be
doing something right! And before you said it NO its not my family or friends!” Times are exciting
for the 25 year old chef who decided a few years ago to ‘go into catering’ Ben says “I started
at the bottom washing pots and pans till early hours of the morning then suddenly a desert
chef was ill and I was put on deserts”. “I learned what the components were for desserts,
drove my parents mad learning and chanting ingredient’s. It has to be second nature and
since then have not looked back”. “I was very lucky to have Matthew at Sandbanks
in Leigh on Sea and Spin over at the Lion at Boreham who trusted me and gave
me a chance.” Ben is hoping to do the same for youngsters coming through
the system. “We won’t be the best restaurant in the World but if you can get
a good meal with some fine wines and nice staff in this immediate area what
more can you ask?” Ben’s motto is “Great Food. Great Wine. Great
Company!” and if they can create a venue for food and drink that
everyone in the area can come, enjoy and recommend they will be happy.
I think we’ll all say “Cheers to that!”

WI September Report
The September Meeting
took a different form this
time as the Speaker asked
if she could give her talk
before we attended to our
business. This was no
problem so Kate Cole told
us about ‘The Witches of
Elizabethan Essex’ at the
beginning of the meeting.
The Witchfinder General,
Matthew Hopkins, not
surprisingly, featured quite
heavily. Although he was
born in Suffolk, he moved
to the Manningtree area,
where he began a ruthless
career. During his time as
self-appointed Witchfinder General, he and his followers
were responsible for more people being hanged for
witchcraft in three years, than in the previous 100 years.
Colchester Castle is where most of the witches who were not
put to death, ended their days.
Kate told us about the relationships between Kings of
England and witches in the past. The most notable was
Anne Boleyn who was falsely accused of incest, witchcraft,
adultery and conspiracy against the King and we all know
that didn’t end well!
To our surprise, the last witch was prosecuted as late as 1944
because the 1735 Witchcraft Act remained on the statute
books, never having been repealed. This did finally happen
in 1951.
Kate has a wealth of knowledge on happenings in our
County and beyond and has written many books about local
history. Her talk is well worth hearing.
After the business, Shirley told us of some forthcoming
outings she has arranged. We are going to the Beth Chatto
Christmas Fair at the end of November with lunch at The
Rose Tree Tea Room at Dedham afterwards. She has also
booked Scrimshaws for our After-Christmas Lunch in
January. Looking ahead to March, we are off to The Cliffs
Pavilion to see ‘Remembering the Oscars’ with Strictly Come
Dancing’s Aljaz and Janette. It sounds as though it will be a
varied and interesting show.
Before all that, our Christmas Coffee Morning will be on
Friday the 22nd of November, in the WI Hall, Guys Farm
Road, from 10.00am until 12 noon. All are welcome to join
us for mince pies, cakes, sausage rolls and tea or coffee.
There will be handmade birthday and Christmas cards for
sale, courtesy of the Craft Club.
We only have two more Craft Club meetings before this
event so we shall have to be busy on the second and fourth
Tuesdays of the month. We meet in the WI Hall from 1.30pm
until 4.00 and anyone is welcome to come along.

VICAR OF DIBLEY
MALDON DRAMA GROUP
Maldon Drama Group are celebrating their most popular
production to date after filling every seat for their production of
Vicar of Dibley. Maldon Town Hall was filled to capacity to watch
the antics of the residents of Dibley as they adjust to their new
vicar, weather the great storm and celebrate the marriage of Alice
and Hugo. The reception from the audience was fantastic with
enough laughter to raise the roof.
Maldon Drama Group are developing a well deserved reputation
for well produced and superbly acted productions and would like
to thank the people of Maldon and surrounding areas for their
support.
Onwards and upwards now as casting takes place for William

Dotty Drawings
1. Each player draws six
random dots on their
page. The pages are
shuffled and handed out
again. It does not matter
if a player receives their
own page back.
2. Players must use the
dots to complete a
picture of anything at all,
such as unusual animals, a
funny face, a landscape, a
building, whatever.
Players have only three
minutes to finish their
picture.
3. Players then take turns
to show their drawing to
everyone else. You may
find a budding artist
among your players or
you may decide that
Rembrandt has nothing
to worry about. It's all
about having fun!

Does anyone at the new roundabout
construction have any common sense ?
Over to
you...
Hopefully you are reading this when the roundabout is fully signposted
and safe to negotiate.
But as I write that is not the case. Since fully opening the roundabout,
all they have done so far is road markings that you only see once you
are at the roundabout. Despite usual logic ( right hand lane for turn
right ) , in both main directions the left hand lanes are for left turns
only. Where are the road signs set further back , telling you which
lane you should be in as you approach the roundabout?
Keep children safe and park more considerably
As the weather has turned considerably autumnal in recent weeks,
I've been doing the school run by car and have been using the Club
Woodham car park most mornings and afternoons.
It amazes me how so many school-run-mums, and it's usually the
same offenders, think it's ok for them to park outside Club
Woodham, Balgores and the Co-op, on the double yellow lines to
either drop off their children in the morning or sit there waiting for
them at the end of the day, when there are spaces in the car park
just a few feet away. Does the highway code not apply to them?
In the mornings, the parked cars cause a backlog up the whole of
Baron Road as nobody knows whose stopped/parked and who
hasn't, and the jam invariably spills back out onto Inchbonnie Road,
especially if there is a huge delivery van parked outside the Co-op as
well. For those of us who do use the car park, it's not easy getting
out of there after drop off as cars are turning into Baron Road from
Inchbonnie but they can't get down Baron Road .... because you're
blocking it!
In the afternoons, the children take their lives in their own hands -
they can't see to cross the road, because you're blocking it again! I
realise it gets busy when it's rainy but there are other places to meet
- the leisure centre, the car park where the kebab place is or Asda's
at a push.
Just this morning I saw a lady pull up outside Strands, get out with
her son in a Willy D uniform and walk carrying a box of cakes away
from her car - why not park in the empty car park less than 20-30 feet
away? It wasn't raining but it had been. The laziness is incredible -
the chances are these people will drive through the car park anyway
to turn their car round to go home - why not use it to park - it's free
and it's always empty in the mornings!!
Another strange phenomenon in the Club Woodham car park is that
very few people park in a space - even if it's for 20 seconds whilst
their kids get out - use a space! I couldn't get out of mine the other
day because a parent obviously couldn't bear to see their child walk
more than they needed to and so blocked me in - nobody could get
past so 2 more cars stopped behind the first one and they let out
their children too (that I can understand!) - all I wanted to do was go
home, but I blocked in by a stream of cars!
On a loosely connected issue, perhaps this new medical centre will
be a blessing is disguise when it comes to yellow line parking
elsewhere in town - more often then not, there are 2-3 cars parked
on the lines outside Brickfields surgery and Rowlands Pharmacy. Any
idea how dangerous that is for crossing the road or pulling out of
Merchant Street?
Name with held
So , if you are going straight ahead, and you see a car on your left as
you get to the roundabout , take care . it might be aiming at the same
piece of road as you .. which is not wide enough for two cars!
Didn’t anyone think to put those road signs up at the same time as
the road markings ?

Another Loss To Our Town
In response to Carol's letter last week, I had to write in and simply
say that I agree with her 100%.
I was initially shocked to see the fire brigade management launch a
desperate downgrading recruitment drive; One, leading up to
Christmas (never a good time to lose your job/post/get a pay cut)
and two, pretty much a year after our full time firemen and women
risked their lives at the Littlecroft fire. Great timing fire brigade
management. NOT!
What however, I find even more deplorable, is that there are
people/business' in this town that seem totally oblivious to this issue
and are blindly going along with it and even advertising to effectively
lose their round the clock emergency cover from the fire station!
ASDA... Leisure Centre... hold your heads in shame! Appalling!!!
Maybe the favour could be repaid and a few banners put up
advertising the new Sainsbury's or Maldon Leisure Centre/pool?
Unsafe Locking System
Dear focus readers
For those of you like myself choose not to use social media, I am
writing to let you know that there has been a number of car thefts in
South Woodham Ferrers in the past couple of weeks. In the early
hours of Friday 11th October my car was stolen from my drive.
It was a Mercedes GLC and had a keyless entry system.
I contacted the police who did not appear bothered and the only
benefit from the call was to gain a Police report reference.
Nothing heard from the police since the 11th.
A lot of car manufacturers use the keyless entry system on new cars
but it appears that this can easily be fraudulently copied which gives
easy access to anyone wishing to steal vehicles.
When I purchased the vehicle last year, Mercedes certainly did not
advise me that this locking system is unsafe and certainly didn't
advise how to combat this.
I have since learnt that keyless entry should be either kept in a pouch
or a sealed metal box at all times when not in use.
I hope this helps others and hope that you also don't wake to find
your vehicle has disappeared overnight.

HIGHWAYS ISSUES AROUND SOUTH WOODHAM FERRERS
On 16th September I wrote a letter to Essex County Councillor Kevin
Bentley highlighting a number of highways issues and asked when they
were scheduled to be addressed. For your information, he replied with
the following information:
A132 Burnham Road, from the Shaw Farm roundabout to the Rettenden Turnpike
He reported a full inspection of Burnham Road was carried out on 26 September 2019, adding “While we do have some defects logged
for this section of carriageway they do not warrant urgent attention at this time, therefore no works are currently planned.”
The railway bridge on Ferrers Road
“The Highway Inspector did not record any issues with the railway bridge.” during a routine inspection on 9 September 2019.
Defective drain cover in Hullbridge Road
Unfortunately, the reply referenced a drain near the junction with Orchid Place not the one I had reported. I was informed that, “An
inspection of the drain was carried out on 25 September 2019 and a job is in the process of being programmed.” I can confirm that this
work (near Orchid Place) has now been finished.
B1418 (to Woodham Ferrers)
Apparently this road was inspected on 27 September 2019, prompted by reports of problems. I was surprised to hear that, “The Highway
Inspector was unable to find any issues meeting our ‘Investigatory Level’ for consideration.”
Road edges on Willow Grove and Creephedge Lane
This seemed more promising, with the following good news being delivered. “I am happy to inform you we are currently in the process
of planning patching works for both Willow Grove and Creephedge Lane. We do not have a confirmed date for this work at this time but
we are hopeful this will completed by the end of November 2019. Please be aware all works are weather dependent and there is a chance
these may be delayed.”
Ferrers Road (Crossing)
Requests for a controlled crossing can’t be made by anyone except Cllr Massey who, “would need to make an application via the
Chelmsford Local Highways Panel.”
The full letter can be viewed on our website: www.swfcta.org
The only positive news is the 'patching works' along Willow Grove and Creephedge Lane, something the Town Council have been nagging
about for nearly a year. Given the state of the road edges there needs to be slightly more than just patching done.
Where the Ferrers Rd crossing is concerned, both Town and City Councillors have asked ECC for a reduced speed limit (to 30mph), as it
is frequently used by pedestrians, particularly school children. They did a speed survey and noted that the average speed along this
stretch of road was only slightly over
30mph. Then they came to the odd
conclusion that the speed limit should
stay at 40mph. Furthermore, I made the
point in my letter that this must be the
only uncontrolled town centre crossing in
a 40mph zone in the County, which is
against current government regulations.
So, now we are being told to go through
the Highways Panel which they know will
take 4 years (or longer) to get a decision
and that might still be , 'No'.
As a local party we are certainly not
happy with any of these responses and
look forward to challenging for a seat on
Essex County Council at the next
opportunity to represent our residents'
concerns about highways and other
matters.

Images of South Woodham from the air
South Woodham Ferrers Library will be hosting an exhibition of photographs ‘South Woodham Ferrers from the Air’.
The exhibition will be open from the 6th November until the 6th December. The photographs have been collected by
Terry Joyce who enjoys flying his plane over Essex and capturing images. Up to twelve large images will be mounted
during the exhibition and on three occasions during this period there will also be a slideshow of over 40 larger images
projected on to the wall in the library.
Why not come along and look at the images and see if you can see where you live, work or go to school?
The larger images will be projected on the following Saturdays:
9th November 2019, between 1000 and 1200
23rd November 2019, between 1000 and 1200
30th November 2019, between 1000 and 1200
For further details of the exhibition please contact the library or Mike Fogg on 01245-328337.
Don’t lose heart
‘As the minutes tick down to the Brexit deadline….’ As I started to write this – these were the words that I
heard from the TV. How many times have we heard this? How many deadlines? By the time you read this
– the only thing I can be sure of is that the minutes will be ticking down to yet another deadline. Again.
This dilemma will not go away. Those charged with solving the problem, whatever the outcome they are
hoping for, have had to be very perseverant.
And in our gospel on Sunday, we have an example of perseverance. A widow who petitions a judge again
and again for justice. And recent events give us an insight into how the judge feels – he is worn out. He
gives her justice because of her perseverance, but we must note that he would not have ruled in her favour unless she had a
case. Sometimes we do not get the outcome we want at the first time of asking, but we should not give up – we will get there
in the end. This is even true of our prayers. God may not answer straight away, or he may not answer in the way we want – but
if we put faith in him, we will get there in the end. It is also true of our faith. We may not get things right all the time, but we
should not give up. God understands that we are fallible – and he will forgive. So, let’s keep going – let’s persevere – with our
prayers and with our faith. And there will be a time when Brexit will be resolved – I just hope I live long enough to see it!

FLU JAB TIME. The NHS reminds us that Flu vaccine is the best protection
we have against an unpredictable virus that can cause unpleasant illness
in children and severe illness and death among at-risk groups, including
older people, pregnant women and those with an underlying medical
health condition.
Studies have shown that the flu vaccine will help prevent you getting the flu.
It will not stop all flu viruses and the level of protection may vary, so it's
not a 100% guarantee that you'll be flu-free.
But if you do get flu after vaccination, it's likely to be milder and shorterlived
than it would otherwise have been. And, by the way, the flu jab
doesn't give you flu.
Working out what sort of flu is likely to come our way in the 'flu season'
and make a vaccine that can give you the right protection requires a crystal
ball and a knowledge of what goes on in Australia where their flu season
(which was particularly vicious this year and resulted in more than 500
deaths) happens about 6 months earlier than ours. The theory is that we
tend to follow the Antipodean trend.
This year the NHS flu-jab campaign is bigger and more complicated than
ever before. Briefly, you are eligible for a free flu jab if you are in one of
the following groups:
• adults 65 and over.
• people with certain medical conditions (including children in at-risk
groups from 6 months of age)

• children aged 2 and 3 on 31 August 2019
• children in primary school
• frontline health or social care workers ... and a few other groups of
people who need special attention also qualify
When they say '65 and over', they mean that you're eligible for the flu
vaccine this year (2019-20) if you'll be aged 65 or over on 31 March 2020.
That is, you were born on or before 31 March 1955. So if you're currently
64 but will be 65 on 31 March 2020, you qualify.
Once you reach 'a certain age' your immune system doesn't work quite as
well - so it needs more of a boost to wake it up and make it ready for action
and the 'special' vaccines for the over 65's are made with this in mind.
Children are important in their own right with respect to flu vaccinations
... but they also have great significance because they carry infections
around and spread then to all and sundry (so, if they come into contact
with any 'at risk' family members, it can cause trouble.)
Your GP or practice nurse (or your pharmacist) will make sure you get the
correct vaccine for your needs.
If you need more information, Google: 'NHS Flu vaccine overview.' If you
can't find what you're looking for on the NHS website then I'm sure your
friendly practice nurse or pharmacist will be happy to advise.
If you're not eligible for a free flu jab but still want one ... many pharmacies
and some GP surgeries will give you one for a reasonable fee.
I’m reading a horror story in Braille. Something bad is about to
happen… I can feel it.
WHAT ABOUT A 'UNIVERSAL' FLU JAB? Fed up with having to have a
flu jab every year? Help may be at hand ... but not just yet. Here's the
problem ... Flu is a viral illness and two strains — influenza virus strain A
and strain B - are the culprits. The trouble is that these viruses are clever -
they constantly change so vaccines needed to target the specific strains
and subtypes must change too in order to keep up with them.
The boffins point out the deficiencies in the current system (which is the
best we've got - but is still very far from ideal) and ask: "Is there a better
way?" Valkenburg & Cowling, writing in The Lancet - Infectious Diseases,
say "improvements in influenza vaccine design are urgently needed." They
list the downside of the present setup: "Inactivated influenza virus vaccines
(IIVs) have been in use for more than 70 years with no major changes in
the underlying technology. Limitations of these vaccines include the long
production cycle, which requires strain selection well in advance of their
use; provision of only moderate protection when vaccine strains match
circulating strains; protection that wanes quickly; potential issues with
repeated annual immunisation, such as reduced ... protection from
infection; and no protection against novel outbreak or pandemic strains."
To try to find a better approach, researchers have been looking at a protein
that is present on the surface of flu viruses which steers them toward the
cells of the victim (i.e. you) - and they then infect your cells. This protein
has two sections - a "head," which differs from strain to strain, and one
called a "stalk" which remains much the same. If you can make a vaccine
that attacks the "stalk" you could be on to a winner given that the current
vaccines target the "head" which is constantly changing - whereas the
"stalk" is more of a static target."
Maria Cohut, writing in Medical News Today, reports on one trial in which
an experimental vaccine was successful in activating antibodies that fight
several different types of flu virus.
She quotes researcher Prof. Krammer as saying: ""The vaccine induced a
broad antibody response, which was not only cross-reactive for currently
circulating human influenza virus but also to avian and bat influenza virus
subtypes. It was surprising to find that the inactivated formulation with
adjuvant induced a very strong anti-stalk response already after the prime,
suggesting that one vaccination might be enough to induce protection
against pandemic influenza viruses yet to arise.
So that's the potential prize ... a flu jab that will not only protect you against
getting flu this year but will also protect you against future 'epidemics'
caused by various types of flu that don't yet exist. That would be really
amazing - so, if Prof. Krammer and colleagues are brainy enough to do that,
perhaps they could put their minds to sorting out Brexit and The Middle
East whilst they're at it!
My girlfriend told me she was leaving me because I keep pretending to
be a Transformer. I said, “No, wait! I can change.”
FOOTBALL AND DEMENTIA. BBC Sport reports that "Former
professional footballers are three and a half times more likely to die of
dementia than people of the same age range in the general population,
according to new research. Experts at Glasgow University have been
investigating fears that heading the ball could be linked to brain injuries.
The study began after claims that former West Brom striker Jeff Astle died
because of repeated head trauma."
If football did exactly what it says in the tin there wouldn't be a problem.
The trouble is that it's not just football ... it's also 'headball' ... and heading
the old heavy leather footballs seamed to do most damage.
And it's not just the footballers themselves that are at risk. There is recent
observational evidence that some Bulgarian football supporters suffer from
quite marked brain damage - although the cause remains unclear.

EDITING OUT 'TYPOS' THAT CAUSE DISEASE. Most of us are computer
literate to a greater or lesser extent these days. We may, for example, start
off by being able to edit a Word document and then some progress to
more complex tasks - like editing pictures or sound file and video files. So
it should be relatively easy for us to get our heads round the fact that,
because the blueprint for the body is the data contained in our DNA, this
too can be edited providing the right tools are available.
The journal 'Nature' takes up the story about a new gene-editing tool
called prime editing - but first a word about the 'industry standard': "For
all the ease with which the wildly popular CRISPR–Cas9 gene-editing tool
alters genomes, it’s still somewhat clunky and prone to errors and
unintended effects.
This sounds like the equivalent of the old way of editing film - slicing out
the bits you didn't want and leaving them 'on the cutting room.' It too was
slow and clunky - and yet it was responsible for films like Citizen Kane,
Casablanca, Psycho, Singing in the Rain and Some Like it Hot - so it's not
to be dismissed lightly.
Nowadays digital editing has taken over in the world of 'film' - and it
sounds as if the new method, called prime editing (which offers greater
control), will radically improve gene editing. This improves the chances
that researchers will end up with only the edits they want, instead of a mix
of changes that they can’t predict. That could make prime-editing-based
gene therapies safer for use in people.
The tool also seems capable of making a wider variety of edits, which might
one day allow it to be used to treat the many genetic diseases that have
so far stymied gene-editors - indeed it's been claimed that prime editing
might help researchers tackle nearly 90% of the more than 75,000 diseaseassociated
DNA variants."
If this technique lives up to its potential it could revolutionise medicine.
The devil is in the detail, however - the detail being exactly how to put it
into practice. Moreover, there are often unintended consequences to great
research; from Plato to Hitler the idea of 'improving the stock' has raised
its ugly head from time to time and the fact that gene editing is becoming
ever more slick and sophisticated will no doubt appeal to the few remaining
eugenicists.
That should not be a reason for failing to celebrate this advance, however,
given the ability of prime editing to change individual DNA letters, delete
letters, or insert a series of letters into a genome, with minimal damage to
DNA strands. There are huge numbers of patients out there with disease
caused by DNA 'typos' who, if all goes well, may well benefit enormously
from this discovery.
I'll let molecular biologist Erik Sontheimer have the last word: “It’s fantastic.
The breadth of the mutations that can be introduced is one of the biggest
advances. That’s huge.”
Dr John

SWF U13 V HARLOW
It was perfect weather for Rugby and the SWF U13 squad were looking forward to the Friendly home game against Harlow this weekend.
Coaches had agreed beforehand that, due to the size of the Harlow Squad, that it would be split into quarters to allow rest for the
Woodham lads. The U13’s, who’s numbers have grown from 9 post season and up to an impressive 16 now, were also welcoming another
new arrival from Willie D’s, Daniel Williams.
From kick off the boys really pressed well and won the first few scrums and rucked over convincingly well, only to fall behind to a swift
counter and a well worked try from Harlow. The boys never put their heads down and really tried to reverse the score line, pushing
through the centre with George and James trying to create something for the centres, Noah and new boy Dan to get their teeth into.
Some bone crunching tackles from Dan, as well as some probing runs, and some great tackles by Tom H, Josh and James H really set the
tone and the score come the end of the 1st two quarters didn’t match up to the game we were all were watching, however, Harlow were
in control 3 tries to 0.
A double whammy of tries from Harlow early on didn’t dent the boy’s confidence and Presley and Ewan were involved in some tasty
exchanges and runs down the wings that had the home crowd cheering. A wonderful kick from George over the top really should have
been capitalised or turned into something more only for Harlow’s excellent winger counter attacking and scoring.
Nathan come on as fly half and really took it to Harlow. His direct running and intelligent play opened up the game only for him having
to leave the field due to injury. Only a slight one we all hope.
Enter Big Joe, who managed to score one of his trademark hustle and bustle runs from the halfway line. Really good play from the big
man and I think it is fair to say Harlow struggled with his play throughout. Harlow did nip up the other end to score only for Joe to score
another much similar to his 1st.
A thoroughly entertaining game for all the spectators and the U13s development really has been great to watch. With the newcomers
to the team starting to understand our drills more and what we expect of this talented bunch.
Don’t let the score deceive you. Once the penny drops for the U13 there will be many a team put to the sword.
Well done guys.

SWF RUFC WEEKLY ROUNDUP
SWF 1st XV v Holt
Saturday 19 September
South Woodham Ferrers RFC recorded their second win of the
season with an emphatic eight try thrashing of visitors Holt. This
was the performance that has been bubbling along under the
stuttering games of the last few weeks with the forwards dominant
in all areas of the game and the backs able to play with style and
pace, off good quick ball.
The game started brightly for the home side when the first scrum
of the game saw Woodham drive the visitors back to win the first
of a several penalties at the set piece. The decision to take another
scrum and then another, after a second penalty, put the lads deep
in the Holt half. The reward came with a run-in try for flanker Liam
Searles, converted by Alex Baker.
More scrums and more penalties deep in the Holt 22 illustrated the
dominance that the home side had. The resulting possession gave
the Woodham backs a chance to put on the style with three more
converted tries from Sevie Hurrell, Jordan Harper and Alex Baker.
SWF U12’s at Harlow RFC Festival
20th October 2019
Squad: Alfie, Archie, Byron (C), Charlie, Dan, Felix, Jack B, Jack C,
Jake, Jared, Josh, Kenny B, Kenny R, Tom, Will.
With Wales squeaking past France 20-19, the boys prepared to
participate in their first festival of the season. The day started off
cool, bright and sunny at the beautiful home of Harlow Rugby. With
Stanford RFC not turning up, the boys only had 3 games to play:
Old Grammarians B, Harlow and Westcliff.
Holt only managed to threaten the Woodham line in the last few
minutes of the half but the defence remained strong and the
whistle came with home side well on top at 28 points to nil.
Changes in the line-up for the second half didn’t unsettle the home
side who continued to dominate all aspects of the game. The backrow
trio of Liam Searles, Stuart Whatling and captain Lewis Gilbert
proved to be a real handful for the Holt defence, breaking the line
at will to pile on the pressure.
Man of the match Liam Searles opened the second half scoring
with yet another break through try and to keep the forwards on
the scoreboard Ollie Trigg found himself on the wing to go over
for Woodhams sixth.
Holt did not give up trying to break through but strong defending
all round saw the ball turned over several times and the Woodham
counter was always threatening. Warren Duggan had several
strong runs from deep in his own half before a final off-load paid
off with Jordan Harpers second try of the day.
As the game drew to an end Woodham passed the 50 point mark
when they were awarded a penalty deep in the Holt 22. A line out
was taken and the resulting attack saw John Murphy dive over
from close range, Alex Baker slotted the conversion to finish with
a 17 point tally.
The whistle came with Woodham having accrued 52 unanswered
points. It was a dominant and disciplined display marred only by
an injury to Scott Horsburgh. In attack the lads were clinical and
could have scored more if Holts defence had not been as well
organised. In defence they gave nothing away and it was pleasing
to see the penalty count at its lowest for some weeks.
FOCUS
Game 1: a shaky start from the boys meant the result went against
them 0-4. A few good tackles from Felix and Jack C, some rucking
from Josh and great ripping from Kenny B and Daniel showing
quick reactions at the scrum. They lost Tom due to injury and it
seemed as the sun disappeared behind the clouds so did the boys’
spirits.
Game 2: a brighter start this time from the boys. Both Byron and
Jack B made good ground, with Josh and Dan making their tackles
count. Harlow scored first but the boys fought back with good
carries made by Josh, Jack B and Byron. Finally, Kenny B powered
through to score the first try of the day. From a penalty to a scrum,
Daniel then took the ball and carried it over to make it 2-1. Handling
errors and high tackles meant that Harlow pulled it back to 2-2
before scoring a third. Now the squad had lost Josh to injury too.
Game 3: having lost 2 players to injury, Kenny B and Archie made
lovely gains. Daniel, Jack C and Kenny B made crucial tackles but
the final score was 0-3 with Alfie lost to injury too.
Not the best day at the office for the boys but plenty to work on
for the rest of the season. The Harlow coach made a point of
complimenting the boys for playing in the spirit of the festival:
teamwork, respect, enjoyment, discipline and sportsmanship. Well
done boys and thanks to Coach Chris, Josh, Wayne and Victoria
for giving up their time to shape and develop the team.
Rest week next week.
SWF RFC U10’s at Harlow Festival
20th October.
Harlow hosted a Festival of Rugby.
Our squad was Alfie, Brad, Ellis, Hayden, Katie, Keith, Luca, Mikey,
and Ollie.
We played against Epping, Harlow, Old Grammarians, and
Upminster.
We played our first game on the back of a late warm up, and it
showed. We were slow out of the blocks. Our first up tackling was

below our normal standard and we made the other teams look very
good at times.
We clearly improved as the games went on, and we saw some of
the good rugby that we can play.
Some stand out moments were Katie's try driving through the
other team to score, and some good rips, Luca's pace and evasion
to score and Ellis's workrate. Some great tackling from Mikey,
Keith and Brad. Brad and Ellis's switch passes also were well done.
Getting some great passes out of the rucks were Hayden, Ollie
and Alfie.
We are always looking to grow the squad. Please contact Gerry
on 07880 498565 if you have, or know an U10 who wants to play
rugby.

have joined us and they are all working really hard!
We were one of the only teams to have a great mix of girls as well
as boys and there was some serious tagging by all the girls!
Well done to you all!! There was some fantastic tries, dodging and
tagging in all games - it shows the hard work in training is paying
off. All players went away with a well deserved medal!
Thanks to Harlow Rugby Club for a great festival and making our
team feel welcome!

had another Hayden who seemed to have dodged the photos

SWF RFC U9’s at Harlow Festival. 20th October.
The U9 team attended the first festival of the 2019 season at
Harlow. The full squad of 12 players were in attendance to a play
a round robin tournament of 5 matches against teams from Harlow,
Epping & Upper Clapton, Upminster, Westcliff and Old
Grammarians.
The weather stayed dry but the recent rain made perfect
conditions for playing rugby.
This season saw the boys moving to full contact and this being only
their second outing, they embraced the opportunity to take their
game to the next level and to put their new skills into practice.
Throughout their matches, the boys played with passion and pride.
Some great passing of the ball was made with supportive player
demonstrated by all. Tackles were made, and try scores in
abundance on both sides.
There’s still some work to be done with committing to the tackle,
but overall it was an excellent performance from the team. Well
done to Charlie, Daniel, Harry S, Leo, Jake, Jacob, Henry, Archie,
Marshall, Luke, Oliver and Harry T.
Keep up the good work, you did yourselves proud.
Our next match we host Burnham at Saltcoats park on the 3rd
November.

some exercise at the same time.
We play every Tuesday night in all-weather between
9pm-10pm and hire half of the full size pitch closest
to the centre itself. The cost is £5 on the night.
The sports centre run a strict cancellation policy
which means I need to give them 15 days’ notice if
we do not have enough players and want to cancel,
otherwise I still have to pay. For that reason I need
to ask players to confirm availability in advance and
ask that you avoid dropping out.

SOUTH WOODHAM’S EWAN HYND AND CHRIS CROOKS BOTH WIN IN
THE BURNHAM TABLE TENNIS LEAGUE
South Woodham’s young Star - Ewan Hynd in winning form this week.
Division 1
Cold Norton A Freeze out Mapledene A
Cold Norton A recorded the biggest shock result of the season
with a full on 10-0 drubbing of title hopefuls Mapledene A. The
Cold Norton trio of Big Duncan Taylor, Matt Stringer and Sam
Lowman would be a match for any team in the County that’s for
sure - but 10-0. You wouldn’t want to be playing Mapledene next
week... This result springboards the Cold Norton boys to the top
of the league and Taylor leads the individual tables with a 100% 9
wins from 9. The Cold Norton B team jump to 3rd spot following
their 5-5 draw with 2 man Maldon A. Dan Anderson and Chris
Ballard both beat the hard hitting Steve Whiteley to secure their 5
points - and Jon Stokes beat allcomers for his Maldon team. In the
only other top flight contest this week West Maldon B’s Nick Duce
was the unlikely star earning his first Division 1 hat-trick of the
season against South Woodham A. Duce was cruelly overlooked
for the doubles and at 0-2down his team mates Dick Wyman and
Neil Freeman looked a bit sheepish but rallied to secure the match
winning doubles point in a tense 5 setter. Wyman and Freeman
both beat Woodham’s Cameron Gray, whilst Woodham’s Daniel
Piglet and Alan Burgess both picked up a brace of wins.
Division 2
By Hook or By Crooks
South Woodham’s Chris Crooks is having a roller coaster of a
season for sure - bouncing from winless to hat-tricks week on
week. This week he was unstoppable again as he led Woodham B
to a 9-1 victory over West Maldon C - and his young accomplice
Ewan Hynd was at it again with a very hard fought hat-trick of his
own winning out two lengthy 5 setters against very experienced
opposition. That convincing win pushes Woodham clear at the top
of Division 2. Maldon C in second place also had the pleasure of
Mr Crooks this week - Crooks continues his good form and secured
wins against top players Mervin Perriman and Bryn Thomas and
combined with young Ben Porter for the doubles win. However
FOCUS
South Woodham’s Fashionista - Chris Crooks in fine fettle this week.
he was powerless to thwart the young Maldon Mauler Thomas
Page - his hat-trick was instrumental in Maldon’s 6-4 win. Page and
Porter had an epic battle in their singles encounter - a possible
Junior Final of the future - with Page coming from behind to win
11-9 in the deciding leg. There were also 3 other decisive results
this week in Division 2. Steve Scholz led his Maldon B team to an
8-2 win over Stow C. The sartorial prince of Burnham Table tennis
Rod McClennan was on top form with 2 wins for Stow but Scholz
won all 4 of his matches. A 3 man Mayland A team overcame
Blackwater A 8-2 for their first win of the season - expect to see
them climb the league in the coming weeks. Mayland were led by
Colin Barrell and Steve Apsland who both earned 3 wins. In the
final match Mapledene C were looking for the perfect win over an
underperforming Cold Norton C - and at 9-0 up it looked likely -
until that is Terry Hyland took the bull by the horns and blasted
Michael Johnston 3-0 (7,7,4) to avoid the whitewash for his Cold
Norton team. By then Lin Roff and Dave Moles had already locked
in their hat-tricks for Mapledene C, and this was enough to push
them into 3rd place.
Division 3
Stowball Continues to gather pace
Stow D continued their winning ways with an 8-2 win over Michael
Pratley’s Burnham A team. Pratley was the only bump in the road
winning both the Burnham points. Stow’s Peter Chastin starred
with a hat-trick including the prized scalp of Pratley, and then
paired up with Jean Chasmer for the doubles win. 10pts back in
second place but with a game in hand Maldon E had a tougher
battle this week against the Blackwater B team - eventually coming
through 6-4 victors largely due to the experienced head of Roger
Warren who was undefeated all evening. St Lawrence B earned a
6-4 win over Stow F with Roy Hutchins winning all his singles for St
Lawrence. The St Lawrence A team couldn’t emulate their B team
and had to settle for a draw with Stow E. Stow had the star of the
match in Jason Bush who won all his matches to keep himself atop
the individual averages league with 9/9 wins so far.
