Diary
GREAVESEY DOES KENYA
Focuses Foreign Correspondent.
Last month I spoke about Uganda and how different the country is
to our own. After Uganda though we flew to the neighboring
country of Kenya which was far more like the other African countries
we've been to. We spent a short while in Nairobi walking round the
markets and shops and taking in the high rise buildings somewhat
reminiscent of American cities. Other Europeans and tourists were
much more in evidence than we had seen in Uganda, and things in
general are far more orderly.
But the main thing Kenya is known for though, is the Safaris and
that was our objective. So after spending a couple of nights in the
capital city we were driven off to the Masai Mara National Reserve.
As you leave the urbanised part of the country you notice the
tarmac on the roads starting to disappear leaving just bare mud to
drive on which is bumpy and kicks up a lot of dust. Here you are
entering the territory of the famous Maasai people. They have
always fascinated me on television and I was eager to find out more
about them. I can't pretend that we spent huge amounts of time in
their company but their villages are everywhere and they are very
eager to befriend outsiders. They wave as we drive past and it
wasn't long before we started to get to know some of them in a
settlement close to where we were staying. Yes, of course part of
their motive is obviously to try and sell stuff to you but they are
nowhere near as pushy as I've had in other places.
As with all Africans we've met, the Male/Female roles are very
stereotypical. The men tend to do the hunting, and farming while
the women look after the homes and children. The women also
build the homes which are put together using a wooden framework
and covering the walls with a mixture of Mud and Cow Dung. We
actually managed to get invited into one and they are surprisingly
homely but you can't help thinking about what the walls you are
sitting against are made of. The men are also tasked with building
huge fences around the groups of huts to keep wild animals out.
They are famous for wearing red and they do so as it is easily seen
and serves as a threat to any wild beast that comes too close or
enters the camp. Men are allowed as many wives as they can afford
(or as I suggested, cope with) and the girls all live in harmony and
term each other as sisters. That jumping dance you see them do is
a basic courting ritual and he who jumps highest gets the pick of the
girls. I had a go at joining one of these dances but the Maasai
women were unimpressed.
truly remarkable place. But then they confided to us that in Africa,
Kenya is regarded as the touristy place where Europeans and
Americans go. Like they cram as many animals as they can into the
space provided so you will see loads of stuff and the Eco System
truly does tick over without human supervision. But everything is
still ultimatly caged in. If you are an African Wildlife enthusiast,
there is only one place to go and that's Botswana.
Botswana is home to the Chobe National Park and that too is
immense but it has no physical boundaries. Although you may not
see the diversity of wildlife there that we saw in Kenya, it is still
somehow more natural. One of the differences this brings is that
in Botswana you can be driving along a duel carriageway and see
a group of lions in a lay bye feeding on a creature they bought
down during the night or you can have your way blocked by an
Elephant walking down the central reservation. At night you
suddenly hear the sound of fireworks going off as the locals use
them to drive large groups of animals out of the villages. I'm not
sure if this is the only African country where this happens but it
does for me, still put Botswana as the best country I've ever visited
for wildlife.
In the long run though, my preference is largely all in the mind
because the overall experience is much the same in either country.
So if you are looking for a fantastic African Safari where you want
to see everything and hopefully do it all in one trip then you cannot
go wrong with Kenya. The people are friendly the landscape is
breath taking and the cost is quite reasonable. I'm not going to
race back but I have every intention of returning.
But then came the Safari. I have to say that the wildlife spotting in
this country is out of this world. The Masai Mara Reserve is a huge
expanse of wild land covering 580 square miles and the range of
creatures that we saw there was more than in any other African
Country we've been to. We saw wild Lions, Leopards, Cheetahs,
Elephants, Giraffe, Hippos, Rhinos, Buffalo, Wildebeast, Zebra, Topi,
Water Buck, Eland Antelopes, Impala, Warthogs, Honey Badgers,
Hyenas, Baboons, Vervet Monkeys, Ostriches, Nile Crocodiles and
all other manor of Bird and reptile life. For me it was animal heaven.
The only thing I would say though is that although they live wild
and have no limit of freedom, they are still ultimately enclosed
behind miles and miles of fencing. When we first went to this
continent we chose to go to South Africa and enjoyed it immensely.
We also befriended some of our guides and one night while
chatting to them unofficially, we told them that we intended to
come to Africa again but that next time we would stay in Kenya.
Surely that is where its all at after all, and they agreed that it is a
The Vicar of Dibley has to be
one of the UKs favourite
comedies and the script for
this version is a wonderful
amalgamation of some of the
best episodes.
The sleepy Parish of Dibley is
amazed to discover that their
new vicar is a woman!
Geraldine Granger, played by
Helen Rasmussen, has to win
over the eccentric parish
council, headed by David
Horton (Simon Ash), minuted
by the pedantic Frank Pickle
(Scott Peters) and disrupted
by Owen Newitt (Chris Pond),
Mrs Cropley (Karen Smith) and
last but by no, no, no means
least Jim Trott (David Ford).
The parish has its work cut out
when a church window is
broken in the storm with no
name, and love is in the air for
Alice (Heather Lucas) and
Hugo (Dan Roberts).
Rehearsals have been
underway for several weeks
now and the cast still have
trouble keeping a straight face.
The performances of this fun
play are at 7.45 on the 17th,
18th and 19th of October at
Maldon Town Hall with doors
opening at 7 and a licensed bar.
SOUTH WOODHAM FERRERS LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY
BUILDING UTOPIA IN PURLEIGH - THE RISE AND FALL OF A LATE VICTORIAN DREAM
For a brief period in the dying years of the nineteenth century there appeared
at Cock Clarks in Purleigh a small pioneering Tolstoyan anarchist community.
The members of this colony were intent upon living off the land as a
commmunity committed to the ideals of what has been described as a ‘radicalpacifist
Christian philosphy’. It was a sort of Christian-communist anarchism
that had but one rule – that there were to be no rules. The movement’s
adherents leaned heavily on principles embodied in Christ’s Sermon-on-the-
Mount.
The emerging colony attracted families from Russia and unsuprisingly drew
considerable attention to itself, not only because of the radical form of
community living that was being promoted but also because of the workers’
reportedly rather eccentric attire. It was a venture that saw a certain amount
preparatory agricultural work completed and the establishment of a small
brickworks on the site - which provided the products for the erection of cottages. Colony House (illustrated), now very much altered, is
a survivor from that period. The years 1897 and early 1898 probably saw the colony at its most successful but such success was shortlived,
disharmony set in and this brave attempt to provide an alternative to capitalistic expoitation soon joined the list of other failed
community experiments. For a while though, because of the Tolstoy connections, it must have seemed that this corner of Essex had
been at the centre of the world’s attention.
Vic Gray, former County Archivist at Essex County Council, has researched the growth and demise of this fascinating but short-lived
Purleigh venture and will be presenting his findings to the October meeting of the South Woodham Ferrers Local History Society. His
illustrated talk ‘Building Utopia at Purleigh – the rise and fall of a late-Victorian dream’ will take place at 8.00 pm on Wednesday 2nd
October at Champions Manor Hall Community Centre, Hullbridge Road, South Woodham Ferrers CM3 5LJ. Visitors are welcome to
attend and there is no need to book (admission £3). Any enquiries please telephone the Local History Society’s chairman John Frankland
Over to
you...
WHY I THINK ASDA AND ESSEX COUNTY COUNCIL SHOULD TOGETHER
BUY THE TOWN CENTRE HEALTH CLINIC.
First let me give you a bit of history. It is generally agreed that Essex Country
Council has been a poor friend to South Woodham, regarding it merely as a
milch cow. Ray Arthur, who moved here 37 years ago, recently wrote to Focus:
"I was attracted to the move by the projected image of a new "village", which
would never be extended beyond the boundaries formed by the river, a then
comparatively little used Burnham Road, and a natural area incorporating
what is now the council tip" Ray went on to say: "So many promises broken".
ECC had precious little regard to healthcare when the town was planned - its
only contribution was to commission an artist to draw a picture of a health
centre (to include GPs) which was never built. It was only considerably later
(and after the great deal of public pressure) that the town Centre Health
Clinic, the smaller building we have today, was erected and, if my memory
serves me correctly, the building costs were borne by the NHS.
Essex County Council did, however, come up with the concept of a 'medical
centre' for the town - a piece of land adjacent to the ASDA car-park. When
clinicians wanted to move from unsuitable accommodation to purpose built
practices we were told that ECC had come up with a 'vision' for the town
rather late in the day and that the practices were henceforth to be situated
in the town centre. When I applied I was told that, like everybody else, that
that there was no possibility of freehold premises in the town centre so we
would have to be leaseholders. Most such properties at that time came with
a peppercorn rent - but the ground rents for the properties in the town centre
were set at a high level in keeping with ECC's long-held philosophy that it
should take as much out of South Woodham as possible and put very little
back. Given that there was seemingly no alternative I reluctantly agreed to
the leasehold suggestion.
These dealings took place at the Council Office in South Woodham where I
dealt with a very helpful chap. He asked if I had decided on a builder and
when I said I hadn't, he recommended one. This builder, in turn, said he would
find somebody to draw up the plans ... and when they came back I spotted
that they had been drawn up by the nice man from the Council Office.
The leaseholders of the town centre sites (I was one of many) were given the
clear impression that, when the leases were sold off, we would get first option.
Accordingly, when Essex County Council decided to sell off the leases the
local doctors, dentists and pharmacist directly involved were invited to a
meeting with the ASDA Estates Manager and we were asked if we would be
interested in purchasing them. We all said that we would. This made sense
because it would put an end to the continual drain on healthcare resources in
the town. I should make it clear that this happened BEFORE ASDA was taken
over by Walmart.
There were no further discussions whatsoever - and no mention of any figures.
The next event of note was that we saw a headline in a local newspaper saying
that the ground leases had all been sold off to a concern called SW
Investments - a London-based 'private family' property company (with no
prior connection to South Woodham.)
I spoke to one of the owners of this 'family business' after the event and he
told me "basically what happened" - which was that, in order for ASDA to
buy the lease for the land its store occupied, it had to offer to buy up
everybody else's leases too. The SW Investments man said: "From our point
of view ASDA wanted to buy their store. They agreed in the end to buy it, or
the Council would not sell them their store on their own, it was either take
everything or nothing. They agreed to buy everything. We had also tendered
to buy everything as well as the industrial estates as well. It was a much, much
bigger portfolio which in the end they split into two. ASDA bought one part
and the Royal Bank of Scotland bought the other part on behalf of the
residents of most of the industrial estate and we got in touch with ASDA and
ASDA said to us if you want to make us a bid to buy everything you can, but
be aware that you will probably bidding against the tenants. We came in with
obviously a stonking bid. They didn’t come round and argue with us they
said fine, OK, if you’ll do it, you can have it, and we obviously did in like a
day."
I pointed out that the ASDA people had told us that that it was nothing to do
with them - that the deal was with Essex County Council - to which he replied:
"Well, No. That isn’t realistically true. What it was was ASDA had agreed to
buy everything and simultaneously with them buying everything we did
actually take a transfer in the end direct from the Council. But realistically it
was all part of one parcel. In other words they had committed themselves to
buying everything and we simultaneously with their completion bought
everything excluding their supermarket, and the contract came direct
effectively the transfer came direct from the Council, but realistically it was
really through ASDA."
This transaction took place in the ASDA offices in Leeds.
The SW Investments man told me: "In a nutshell really, what the Council were
only interested in is selling their portfolio, and raising money on the back of
that. They advertised it in the biggest property magazines in the country, i.e.
The Estates Gazette, they went to best bids. They were asking for offers in
excess of £12 million, and I think we bid £15 million for the portfolio anyway,
as a straightforward investment deal - nothing to do with the town."
He commented on the 'ethics' of "the deal" saying: "It’s ridiculous the way
the deal was handled all the way round, to be honest with you. I never agree
with Councils never offering the lessees the opportunity to buy it themselves
anyway, and the majority of Councils do offer to lessees to buy as it so
happens but this Council for some reason couldn’t be bothered to deal with
it."
I am merely reporting what I was told and can't vouch for the validity except
inasmuch as it appears to fit the known facts.
Needless to say SW Investments wanted to make a tidy profit. I was told:
"The other surgery, Clements House Surgery, we have served a big notice on
that; they are paying £1900 a year, we have implemented the 97 review, we
have served notice I think at £8,000 or £9,000."
The outcome is that £hundreds of thousands of pounds have been lost to the
South Woodham healthcare budget over the years because of the actions of
Essex County Council ... not to mention the adverse effect this has had on
the other town centre businesses. There has never been any apology to the
town - and nor has there been any attempt to recompense the town for the
vast sums that have been lost to the healthcare budget.
So what's the point of this whinge? Having a new health facility on the
outskirts of the town is less than ideal ... but there are potential benefits and
(if one overlooks the traffic chaos) the healthcare surveys indicates it could
just work if there is also a town centre facility.
As we know to our cost, however, 'the NHS' likes cutting the budget of the
already underfunded South Woodham. It's fairly clear that it wants to sell off
the existing Health Clinic - it is a freehold property given that ECC made an
exception in its case - so presumably the proceeds can be used to
counterbalance the £2+ million the NHS committed to spend on a 20 year
lease for The New Surgery/The Practice on the basis of a 'Business Plan'
predicated on a public consultation which found that some 53 people (out of
a population of some 18,500 at the time) thought that putting a 4th surgery
in the town centre would be a jolly good idea. If there is anything left in the
kitty afterwards it will no doubt end up elsewhere.
If this turns out to be correct then, as before, patients will be asked to go
without because of the profligacy of those who make decisions for the town
far away and behind closed doors ... and without any meaningful consultation
... and without any accountability when it all goes horribly wrong.
ASDA is now in new hands - but the old organisation retains some
responsibility for the sins of its predecessor. More to the point as far as the
wellbeing of the current organisation is concerned, healthcare facilities bring
people close to shops and supermarkets so there is a commercial interest. I
have heard that some forward looking councils are thinking along these lines
to 'rejuvenate the high street' which is why I have suggested that Essex
County Council should contribute. When all is said and done, it retains liability
for the despicable way it has treated healthcare in SWF and some gesture of
atonement wouldn't go amiss. Some say that that is a naive hope - but those
of us who are ever on the lookout for flying pigs retain a healthy optimism.
If there is any mileage in this proposition, however, they will have to move
fast, though - once the NHS closes the Health Clinic (despite the protests of
the residents spearheaded by the Patient Participation Groups) it won't open
again.
Dr John
Purleigh and District Gardeners’ Society
The club welcomed Burnham Gardening Club to their September meeting where Andrew Brogan gave a talk
about the Henstead Exotic Garden which he has designed and made from scratch over the last 19 years.
Andrew moved out of London when his company relocated to Norwich and it was at that time that purchased
his cottage and ½ acre of land. He had had very little gardening experience in his formative years but had been inspired by Hardy
Palms which he had seen growing in London and decided that he would try to make an exotic garden just 2 miles from the
inhospitable East Coast. Working mainly as a one-man-band Andrew’s garden has grown to 2 acres and he has fulfilled his dream
of an creating an exotic garden filled with hardy palms, tree ferns, bamboo, exotic shrubs and plants, water features, grottos,
buildings and other landscape features. Andrew has an interesting and humorous way of telling the story of how his garden has
developed and all the members thoroughly enjoyed his talk which he supplemented with photos. He also brought along a number
of the plants that he had grown in his garden for members to purchase. Andrew’s garden was voted as Alan Titchmarsh’s number
one garden and has featured on television, in books and is regularly used as a backdrop for photo shoots. It is open to the public
from June to September on Sundays and Wednesdays.
During the interval tea, homemade cakes and sausage rolls were served. Members were also given 3 Narcissi bulbs to grow for the
Lawrence Cooper Challenge at the Spring Show next year and Seed Catalogues for Kings Seeds were available.
On Thursday 12th September club members had a private visit to Furzelea Garden in Danbury. This is a very romantic garden, full
of late summer colour and is regularly open to the public for charity via the NGS scheme. We had a lovely day concluding with tea
and home-made cakes on the sheltered, sunny patio. Thank-you to Avril and Roger Cole-Jones for giving us the opportunity for a
private visit and for providing tea, cakes and recipes!!
The meeting next month on Monday October 21st is a talk by Tricia Moxey on the Wonderful World of Fungi. This will be held at
Purleigh Village Hall at 7.30 pm. There will also be a plant sale and members are asked to bring along any plants that are surplus to
their requirements for the sale. Visitors are very welcome for a small fee of £2.00.
DEMENTIA PROGRESS. There isn't a 'cure' yet - but there's a lot
of progress with early diagnosis. "What's the point if there's no
cure?" I hear you say. Well, you can take avoiding action so as to
delay and/or minimise the condition .
Tom Barnes wrote in the Indy in August that "A blood test to
identify the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease has been
developed by scientists in what could prove to be a major
breakthrough in the treatment of the condition. Researchers say
the simple test for the neurodegenerative disease, which has been
found to be more than 90 per cent accurate, could be available at
GP surgeries “within a few years”."
There is currently research which is looking at a broad range of
possible predictors - all the usual suspects such as blood tests,
cerebrospinal fluid examination, scans etc - in order to find out
what most accurately forecasts the onset of dementia.
FOCUS ON HEALTH
industry were "asleep at the wheel" and not tackling obesity.
Obesity increases the risk of type 2 diabetes and heart disease and
is putting millions of people at risk of cancer."
The problem the public heath gurus face is that you can try to
educate people about the dangers of 'the unhealthy lifestyle' until
you are blue in the face but there's only a relatively a small cohort
of 'fitness enthusiast' who take the message onboard. It's only
when you slap a tax on things that most of us start saying things
like: "I'm not paying that for a pack of ciggies!" The alcohol
minimum price has done more to change behaviour in Scotland
following its introduction there than Adrian Chiles could ever hope
to achieve in a million years. There are dissenting voices - Boris
Johnson, for example, (whom insiders believe is unlikely to be
crowned 'Slimmer of the Year') has questioned whether "sin taxes"
actually cut obesity. The evidence points to the fact that they do.
Until there is a quick diagnostic test that is available in a GP surgery
(one that avoids the need for you to head off to the 'Memory
Clinic') and an effective treatment or treatments we have to fall on
the fact that prevention is by far the best option. The advice is
straightforward ... the lifestyle that lowers your risk of stroke and
heart attack, and that also lowers your risk of diabetes and cancer
is also the one that gives a good deal of protection against
dementia ... in other words the bog standard 'healthy lifestyle' -
and dementia experts tell us that it's the lifestyle we should ALL
adopt irrespective.
For more information Google: 'BBC Dementia: Lifestyle changes
that could lower your risk'.
Alternatively Google: 'British Heart Foundation reduce your risk' -
or - 'Cancer Research UK
Can cancer be prevented?' - or - 'Diabetes UK Reduce your risk
of Type 2 diabetes'. They all tell you pretty much the same thing.
Dentist: "You need a crown." Patient: "Finally someone who
understands me!"
GOOD NEWS AND BAD ON SUGAR. The BBC reports that: "The
sugar tax - officially the soft drinks industry levy - was introduced
in April 2018. It charges manufacturers 24p per litre on very sweet
drinks and 18p per litre on medium-sugar ones. Brands such as
Fanta, Ribena and Irn Bru changed their recipes in response. On
average, 100mls of sugary drinks now contain 28.8% less sugar
than in 2015."
What's the outcome? "Sales of soft drinks increased between 2015
and 2018, but shifted towards low- or zero-sugar versions. It works
out as more than 30,000 tonnes less sugar - 5 billion fewer calories
- being sold in such drinks each year."
Now for the bad news. According to the Beeb: "The progress on
the sugar content of pop is in stark contrast to that in other foods.
Efforts to cut a fifth of the sugar out of our food by next year are
way off target, figures from Public Health England show. Between
2015 and 2018 the average sugar content of shop-bought food fell
by just 2.9% and the amount of sugar we actually eat has gone up"
... despite the tax on sugary drinks.
The BBC report goes on to say: "The food industry said the
voluntary target was too ambitious. But experts said parts of the
"Mum! I’m a 3d printer!"
"Oh come on, Tommy, close the door when you do a poo!"
TAP WATER IS BEST. Earlier this month there were headlines in
The Daily Mirror, The Guardian, The Sun, The Daily Telegraph, The
Mail Online, and The Times suggesting that soft drinks (including
the diet/sugar-free varieties) are linked to increased risk of early
death
As ever, the NHS has looked at the evidence behind the headlines.
It concluded that "While the link between sugar consumption and
health problems is well established, it is unclear why artificially
sweetened drinks could have an adverse effect on health. Due to
the nature of the study the researchers were unable to prove that
soft drinks are directly to blame for the small increased risk of
death. However, the researchers say their findings add support to
public health campaigns urging people to drink water instead of
soft drinks. After all, tap water in the UK is safe to drink and free
of calories."
The conclusion is that: "There's no need to panic about the
headlines suggesting that diet drinks will shorten your life. Taking
that into account, it remains the case that drinking a lot of soft
drinks is not recommended as part of a healthy diet. Water and
unsweetened tea or coffee are likely to be healthier options.
Replacing soft drinks with tap water is not only likely to be
healthier but could save you a lot of money."
Not only is tap water good for your wallet - it's also hugely
beneficial to the air you breathe and the wellbeing of the planet.
As you read this there are fleets of lorries delivering bottled water
here, there and everywhere, and spewing out noxious fumes as
they do so - and the number of plastic bottles manufactured to
cater for this fad is the stuff of Greta Thunberg's worst nightmares.
Revenge
This was the headline in one of the national newspapers. The typeface filled half of the page. The rest was
a picture of a nice country bungalow and a little bit of script that ended ‘Full story on page 3’. I doubt
whether anyone who bought the paper could resist the temptation to turn straight to page 3 and read the
details. If they had they would have found that a woman whose husband had cheated her and gone off with
her best friend had bided her time, waited for her opportunity then killed them both, not instantly, but in a
way which allowed her to extract maximum satisfaction by giving them maximum terror. A nasty, sorry,
sordid story of course, but the editor of the paper knew it would help his sales for that day.
Deep down many of us know someone we would like, as we say, to ‘get even with’. Someone has done something to us which
we have allowed to fester. If we had the courage, or the folly, we would love to get our own back. More worrying still, at any
given moment there is probably someone who would love to take revenge on us. The desire for revenge is like a deep itch
somewhere right down inside. The editor knew that because we can’t scratch that itch ourselves we like reading about someone
else who could and did.
Revenge is a driver embedded very deeply into people in general and into individuals. It drove for many years the horrors of
Northern Ireland, it is fuelling the hatred being played out in the Middle East. It can be seen it today’s political scene. It is at the
root of the breakdown of many families. It is a huge challenge, and we have to find an alternate way to deal with the problem.
Revenge is not that way. Neither is going soft and pretending that the cause of the itch never happened. We have to stop, think
deeply, and seek a way which might seem initially both surprising and impossible.
When the Roman Soldiers hung Jesus on the cross, we might have expected the small group of his followers who witnessed the
horror to have felt the urge for revenge. But no. They had learned form Jesus the way of forgiveness, they had taken on board
the teachings of their leader, they had heard his message of love, that his followers were to go and tell others that overlaying the
hatred and hurt of a crucifixion was the love of a heavenly Father. This was where they were to put their sights. Can this be an
example to you? Rather than having an urge for revenge which would be a backwards step why not come and find a new way, a
peaceful, satisfying and loving way by joining in the worship and activity of one of the six churches in South Woodham Ferrers.
SOUTH WOODHAM FERRERS RFC V WYMONDHAM
Sat 21st September 2019
South Woodham Ferrers made the long journey to the impressive
new home of London 2 North East newbies Wymondham; coming
away with a losing try bonus following an exciting but untidy game.
Wymondham winning 38 points to 28 by virtue of a better placekicking
performance.
This was a game were Woodhams defence showed
uncharacteristic frailties, especially in the face of Wymondhams
well-rehearsed running moves on their very large pitch.
The home side opened the scoring with converted try in the first
10 minutes, busting through holes in the back line to score under
the posts. Woodham hit back soon after when their scrum proved
too much for Wymondham. A quick strike allowed scrum half
Kieran Ballinger to sprint round the blind side, through the defence
and over the line to score. Unfortunately, the conversion was
missed, setting a trend that was to plague the visitors throughout
the game.
brought the visitors to within one point, the score at the whistle
14 points to 13.
The second half turned into a try fest with Wymondham scoring
four times to Woodhams three. The home side were able to take
advantage of a series of missed tackles that allowed them to break
clear and exploit their running game.
Woodham did not give up and tries from Tate Holliday and two
from sub Alex Baker meant the visitors secured their own try bonus
but without the extra points for the conversion they fell short of
the important extra losing bonus.
Coach Tony Woods will have been disappointed with the defensive
performance, particularly after the fine effort put in last week.
Equally the lads will rue the missed opportunities that were
undoubtedly there to secure, at least, the losing bonus.
Woodham drew ahead shortly after when the Wymondham
skipper was yellow carded for a high tackle. The resulting penalty
was punted deep into the home sides 22. Woodham scored their
second try from a driving maul off the line out.
Wymondham scored next when they too put a penalty kick into
the Woodham 22, crossing the whitewash after a well worked
moved from the resulting line out. The try was converted, and they
moved into the lead.
to play a friendly game against the Clacton-on-Sea bowlers.
Arriving in good time for lunch and a meeting on the seafront –
and catching up with a couple of old friends who have left SWF to
enjoy living by the seaside in Clacton. On such a beautiful day it
was certainly an appealing thought.
The Clacton Club welcomed us and we had a close match with
one win, one draw and two close losses! Followed by a
delicious cream tea in their beautiful Clubhouse and back to
the cars to head home after our annual outing – perfect
NHS STAFF RAISED MORE THAN £10,000 FOR CANCER RESEARCH UK
The Shine Night Walk team grew as a
movement across the organisation and the
eager walkers went on group treks as long
as 20 miles to prepare for the big night. As
more and more staff signed up for the 26.2-
mile event, the team decided to call itself
“NHS Livewell”. Together, they raised a
whopping £10,000 including Gift Aid for
Cancer Research and are continuing to
bring in even more sponsorship.
Caroline Rassell, Accountable Officer for
Mid Essex CCG, was one of the 28 walkers.
She said: “Team NHS Livewell definitely
shone on the night – and continue to shine
– having met such a great challenge. I am
so proud of the team for raising more than
£10, 000 for such a worthy cause.
Local NHS staff walked more than 26 miles overnight to raise a
five-figure sum for Cancer Research UK last weekend.
Every year, the national cancer charity organises a “Shine Night
Walk” event. This is a marathon-length sponsored walk around
cities across the UK that begins one evening each September. The
2019 event was held on Saturday the 21st and Sunday the 22nd.
Nearly 30 staff from NHS Mid Essex Clinical Commissioning Group
(CCG) started up a team as part of a staff challenge to be more
active, mindful and give a little back to the community. The CCG
is fully behind its staff members’ participation in the walk.
“I know all of us found it tough at times but
we all spurred each other on and pushed
on right until the end. There’s a great
element of team work when doing a
challenge like this. I think we are all sad it’s
over, but glad it happened. The training and the walk itself really
brought everyone together and I feel staff had a real opportunity
to bond with each other.”
Michelle Escott, HR Manager at the CCG, said: “I can’t believe
we’ve now completed the challenge! I think we achieved
something great by taking part and raising such an impressive
amount of money. The feeling we all got as we crossed that finish
line was indescribable.”
“The whole experience has been one I will never forget. I hope this
will spur on other people to take on such challenges.”
BREAST CANCER SUPPORT GROUP MOVES TO BROOMFIELD HOSPITAL
A support group for women who have
experienced breast cancer is moving to
Broomfield Hospital.
The monthly group was previously based at the Helen Rollason
Centre in Springfield but will now meet at its new permanent home
at the hospital’s Breast unit (A104).
The next meeting will be on Wednesday 18 September from 7.30
- 8.30pm. The group will be joined by Julie Blanche of The Bra
Consultancy who helps women who have undergone surgery find
underwear that suits them.
Subsequent meetings will be held every third Wednesday of the
month.
Heidi Barclay, clinical nurse specialist in breast care, wants to
encourage as many women as possible to attend.
“The group is for women who have either recently been
diagnosed, are undergoing treatment or have finished treatment
for a breast cancer.
understand the anxieties that come with that, who have been
through treatment and can give advice or reassurance on how to
cope with those treatments. It’s peer-to-peer support.”
The group is open to all, not just Broomfield patients, and there
will be breast care nurses in attendance to answer questions and
make tea and coffee.
Heidi added: “Women are asked not to bring friends or relatives
with them as we want them to be able to speak honestly about
how they feel without worrying about their loved ones being upset
about what’s discussed.
“For women who have had a breast cancer, it’s definitely worth
coming along. It may be something you want to come to on a
monthly basis, you may want to come once or twice a year, or just
as a one-off.
“It’s about making sure women get what they want when they
want it – women can use the group how they like. You will always
find someone who has had a breast cancer experience and can
share support or information with you.”
“Women that come to the support group can talk to people who
know what it feels like to be told they have a cancer, who
