KIND OF BLUE
Christmas comes but once a year...
(so you'd better make the most of it).
One way to do this is to come to the hall of the Bell pub in
Woodham Ferrers on Sunday 15th December 2.00pm - 4.30pm
where your festive season can begin with the sounds of "Kind of
Blue" a local modern jazz group.
The event will be divided into two sessions:
In the first half we will entertain you with our usual mixture of jazz
"classics" and songs from the "Great American Songbook" (but
with a jazz tinge - e.g. the Modern Jazz Quartet version of "God
rest ye merry gentlemen".
Following an interval, Pauline will lead you in a traditional
Christmas "sing-song", washed down with mulled wine and Sue's
delicious buffet.
Entry to this performance will be by a reasonable £5 ticket
(proceeds to breast cancer and Crohn's disease) and there will be
a raffle. Tickets can be acquired through phoning the Bell (01245
320443) or Dave (07774 912083). (Hurry, for they are limited, and
we have sold several already).
So "kick off" the start of your Christmas with an enjoyable Sunday
afternoon in the Bell, (and know that you are contributing to
worthwhile cause).
Changes for 2020
For those who don't like coming out on a Monday evening, next
year's gigs will be mostly on the last Sunday afternoon of the
month, 2.00pm - 4.30pm.
After Christmas, our future gigs will be on the Sundays 26th
January, 1st March and 29th March, all in the hall of the Bell.
Look forward to seeing you in Christmas and the New Year.
All the staff at Studio One
would like to wish past, present and future
clients a very Merry Christmas.
Best wishes

DO YOU HAVE A VIEW ON THE FUTURE
PRIORITIES OF ESSEX FIRE?
Hundreds of people have already taken part in a consultation which
gives residents the chance to have their say on how the future
priorities of Essex County Fire and Rescue Service (ECFRS) are
delivered.
The consultation runs until Friday 13 December and sets out the
priorities for ECFRS by asking residents to agree or disagree on
what they feel is a priority, as well as give the opportunity to share
their opinions on the focus of the fire and rescue service.
The questions asked in the consultation include points around road
safety, home visits, staff training and keeping vulnerable people
safe.
All of the priorities prepare the Service for a future with reductions
in incidents, an increased focus on prevention and a commitment
to become financially sustainable as reductions in funding continue.
Chief Fire Officer/ Chief Executive Jo Turton said:
"Our Service recognises the voices of our residents are paramount
in creating a transparent and effective fire and rescue service.
"This is the ideal opportunity for anyone who has ideas or views
about their fire service to be involved in shaping our future."
To have your say on the options visit www.essex-fire.gov.uk/irmp
If you would prefer a hard copy please request this by emailing
irmp@essex-fire.gov.uk or calling 0300 303 0082 between Monday

NEWS
It has been a hectic few weeks at the Brewers Arms. Ben, the owner and chef says, “Every day is so unpredictable; we will
have a few booked in for lunch or dinner in the mid-week then 30 people turn up completely out of the blue. However, we
are now turning away more people as we are fully booked, its heart-breaking but it’s a nice problem to have. We have had
a couple of nice events recently, there was a surprise Birthday party for Frank Bruno, which he knew nothing about and was
told by my dad (his agent) that he had a job in South Woodham Ferrers but to pop into the Dragon to sign some books
first. We took him up the back stairs so when he came down into the restaurant we obtained for all the Guests a Frank
Bruno Face mask and he was really surprised to see his old boxing friends John Conteh and Charlie Magri, along with his
pal for many years, Cas Pennant actor and author along with various charity workers and family and friends. Entertainment
was provided by Harry Cambridge, who is selling out theatres all over the UK with his Luther Vandross show. We had the
1st of our sporting dinner shows with West Ham legend Tony Cottee and this sell out night resulted in us booking another
West Ham former player now a Sky Pundit Tony Gale for Feb 19th 2020.
With Christmas drawing ever nearer it’s time to start thinking about Christmas parties, Christmas lunch (fancy letting
someone else do the cooking and washing up for you?), Boxing day lunch and of course New Year’s Eve. Well the Drunken
Dragon can take care of all of those for you. All the menus are on the website and Ben laughed when we asked him about
New year’s Eve he said, “Well I’m doing my bit in the Kitchen with a 6 course banquet and I’ve told my Dad to dust off his
headphones and mic and he can do a selection of music for dancing to see the new year in”. Dave says, “I djayed as a
profession from 1979 to 2006, I stopped when the music really changed House, R&B was not my thing! My background
was as a personality DJ playing party music from 1960’s to the 90’s. But New year’s Eve was always one of the easiest nights
to DJ, however I never enjoyed it as when midnight came everybody was kissing and greeting all their family and friends
and there I was standing on my own. When asked what was his favourite event of his career? David said, “I worked it out
the other day for a book I am writing; I hosted approximately 16,000 events all over Europe from audiences of 8 up to
15,000, but a special day was my favourite Charity, the London Taxi drivers for Disabled
Children Annual New year’s party at Grosvenor house in London and 1 year I had to
introduce Princess Diana as she was the patron the Taxi charity. This year my wife and I were
invited to Buckingham Palace for the Valentine’s Day Afternoon Tea Party with Camilla
Duchess of Cornwall, I have a great story about that but maybe another time!”
We asked Ben “What’s in store for the New Year“. He replied “Well if there is
enough interest in a wine tasting evening I would like to try that.”
Also talking of Christmas; a number of customers have asked about vouchers
for Christmas presents. No problem, give us a call or pop in.
Then we have been asked to do a Psychic Night on Monday 27th Jan.
Valentines Night 14th February, book now don’t leave it too late!
Tony Gale West Ham on the 19th February
“We are so lucky at the moment that without
having to put on too many events customers are
supporting us which we are eternally grateful for.”

WILLIAM DE FERRERS STUDENTS CREATE MAGICAL
CORRIDOR FOR WOODVILLE PRIMARY SCHOOL
For the second year in a row the William de Ferrers art department were delighted to work with a local primary school. Woodville Primary
School asked if we would be able to help re-energise a walkway into a magical and inspirational corridor for their children. Mrs Clarke
from Woodville and Mr Clarke from William De Ferrers collaborated on a design that depicted a scene from the book ‘The Gruffalo’ by
Julia Donaldson.
A group of year 12 A level art students transformed the space and produced a stunning mural. The primary children were so excited to
have artists working in their school and were mesmerised by the talent of our sixth form students. Mr Clarke also worked closely with
eight students from year 5 and 6, mentoring them and showing them skills to help them produce an image of the fox from the Gruffalo
story.
It was a fantastic experience for our students who worked tirelessly and used their individual skills to produce an illustration of great
character for the students of Woodville to enjoy for many years to come.
We are very proud of the students achievements, and would like to thank them all for their dedication, enthusiasm and hard work. Well
done to Carly Newell, Madeline Webber, Mia Overton and Abigail Woollvin.

YOUR TOWN NEEDS YOU!
Do you have a family story from the Second
World War? Do you have a family member
that can speak about their experiences during
the Second World War? Are you a school that
will be researching this era with their pupils?
If so we need you!
On Friday May the 8th 2020 the charity run South Woodham
Ferrers Village Hall, Field and Community Bar will be
commemorating VE day. We want this to be a truly local event,
going back in time to show how the British people carried on
through the most telling of times. Personal stories,
memorabilia, and anything in fact that will show what went on
and how this great country carried on!
We want to run a traditional day, with sack races, tug of war,
egg and spoon. Baking competitions, craft etc. So if you have
a stall that would be appropriate, and would like to take part,
please contact us!
While this day is predominately for VE day, we would also like
to fully acknowledge VJ day too, so again, if you, your family
or friends have a story to tell, we would like to display this for
everyone to see. Photos would be great, but copies only
please. These are too precious to loose!
Come on South Woodham Ferrers, let’s pull together and make
this a day of remembrance and to remember!
If you would like to join in, please contact Joan on 01621

The Church of England is here for everyone in the town. We
are your first port of call for Baptisms, Weddings and Funerals
even if you don’t attend church. We welcome you at Christmas
and Easter. We are always happy to be here for you – and we
would like to be here for generations to come. But all of these
wonderful services cost money, and in South Woodham Ferrers,
we are facing some challenges in this department. We need
your help. So, we are asking you to support us by giving a
Christmas gift to our church. If everyone residing in the town
donated just £1 per year, the Church of England’s presence
here would be secure.
On Saturday 7th December 2019 between 2 and 4pm the
church will be open to visitors and there will be people there
who will be happy to take your donation and show you around
Holy Trinity Church. You can have a chat with our Vicar, The
Reverend Carol Ball, and enjoy tea, coffee and mince pies.
If you would like to help us, or to book a Baptism or
Wedding for next year please do come along. If you can’t
make it on the day, please visit our website:
http://www.holytrinityswf.org.uk/anglican/ for other ways
to donate.
And may we take this opportunity to wish you a happy holy and
peaceful Christmas.
Angels
Many believe in Angels today, but beware, there are many false beliefs and religions whose purpose is to
mislead people into worshipping fallen Angels (Devil & demons) led by Satan formally known as Lucifer.
There’s much interest in the occult and similar, but the Bible warns against becoming involved in such things.
Evil has limited power, there are twice as many good angels as fallen ones, Jesus has already secured victory
over sin and death by his work on the Cross.
Look in the Bible, you will find that one of the main purposes of Angels is to protect and minister to the
Children of God. They are people who have faith and commitment to Jesus Christ and a personal
relationship with God through the Holy Spirit who lives in their hearts, empowers them and opens up the
truth of God’s word in the Bible.
Angels are as real today as ever.
I was seriously ill in Hospital around 35 years ago. The Doctors told my family that I was dying. As I was laying there the room
changed and two bright Angelic persons appeared to be watching and standing guard over me. I was in a state of peace. Being
a Christian I’d already surrendered myself to God’s will so if I was to die at that moment it didn’t worry me. But God had a
different plan. I heard a voice saying “be healed in the name of Jesus Christ”. The Angels smiled, stepped back and I came round
with the local Pastor anointing me with the sign of the cross surrounded by my mum, fiancee and confused looking medics. I was
not meant to die at that time. I was healed and home in a week. When just moments before my family had been told there was
no hope and to expect the worst.God and his angels stepped in and I’m here to tell others of this today.
We have a real and wonderful God and Saviour in Jesus Christ. The angels are there to serve the family of God, to heal, protect
and guide Gods children in the right ways according to the God’s word, the Bible.
Are you already a Child of God, have you accepted Jesus as your Lord and Saviour?
The Bible says, “seek first the Kingdom of God and his righteousness and all these things shall be yours”. To be a child of God
and receive eternal life and a place forever in His family, ask Jesus to be your Lord, thank him for dying for you on the cross,
come to a local Church service, listen to the Gospel proclaimed, speak to the minister, ask for more details on becoming a Christian
through a simple prayer and see your life changed for the better forever. God bless you as you seek Him this Christmas season.

FROM DOMESTIC TO OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH ADVISOR
Photo: Louise Grzesica,
Trainee Occupational Health
Advisor and Mental Health
First Aider, Occupational
Health Department at
Broomfield Hospital, Mid and
South Essex University
Hospitals Group.
After starting at the Trust 17 years ago, a domestic has worked her
way up the NHS ladder to become an occupational health advisor.
Louise Grzesica had no idea where her career would take her when
she first joined the Trust in 2001, she said: “I was 18 and always
wanted to be a hair dresser, but I came to the hospital because I
thought there would be better opportunities due to the size of the
organisation. So, I joined up as a cleaner.”
After two years as a domestic, she moved to urology outpatients
and saw how busy the staff was. Louise explained: “I became
frustrated because I really wanted to help, in any way possible, but
couldn’t because I wasn’t medically trained. I spoke to my ward
manager and colleagues and they encouraged me to take a leap
of faith.” Louise enrolled on the Staff Bank and worked half a shift
as a healthcare assistant learning on the job. She enjoyed it so
much she enrolled on a basic nursing programme, and went on to
complete her level three NVQ to become a fully registered nurse.
During that time she had multiple placements in the Emergency,
Oncology and Intensive Care departments. She said: “The
placements really helped me to figure out where I wanted to be.
In 2009, I settled on Billericay ward.”
For three years Louise processed patients, admitted them to
theatres and monitored their condition after operations but,
wanting to do more, she enrolled on an exciting burns and plastics
course based across General Burns, Outpatients and the Intensive
Care Unit. She said: “I loved it. It gave me the ability to understand
competencies and treat more complex wounds and dressings.”
In 2013, she moved to Stock ward as a band 5: “There was a restructure
of the service and I was able to get involved and learn
new ways of working. Over four years, I absorbed a lot of
knowledge which I adapted and applied in daily practice. It was
brilliant.
“I started giving immunisations on the ward and was really
interested in the idea of health and wellbeing, so I applied for the
role on a full-time basis in occupational health.
“This new role has opened up an array of directions for me. I’m
learning so much and have started a degree in occupational health.
I learn on the job, listen and be impartial, take bloods and practice
national guidance. I can look after my colleagues, because they
need care too.”
Looking over her 18 years’ progression, she had the following
advice for those who would like to try something new but were
unsure of what to do. She said: “Go for it, dip your feet in the water
and see. Talk to your colleagues. You don’t have to do it all at once
and I still do the occasional shift on Billericay ward, which is my
second home and a place I love to be.”
Jennifer Canham, Associate Director of Human Resources, said:
“Louise’s story is a fantastic example of how our staff can
experience and progress in a variety of roles within the Mid and
South Essex University Hospitals Group, working across multiple
disciplines and departments – and how we can enable colleagues
to explore their full potential and develop a great career in
healthcare.”
ROBOTIC SURGERY SUCCESS CELEBRATED AT BROOMFIELD HOSPITAL
Donors and former patients gathered to celebrate the impact of
Broomfield Hospital’s world-class robotic surgery facilities at an
evening organised by Mid Essex Hospitals Charity.
The robotic surgery appeal has so far raised over £1.3m thanks to
and is now just £189,000 short of hitting the fundraising target.
Over 60 people gathered in the Medical Academic Unit to enjoy
canapés and speeches by consultant surgeon Sri Kadirkamanathan
and MEHT’s medical director Kevin Beaton.
The group then visited an operating theatre where surgeons
demonstrated the capabilities of the Da Vinci XI technology and
supervised as a number of guests took turns at the controls.
Megan Jiggins, 27, had surgery on her oesophagus just three
weeks ago, having been unable to eat solid food. Megan can now
eat a conventional diet again and, returning to the theatre where
her procedure was performed, described her recovery as
“amazing”.
Jamie Blackman, 34, has a gastric pacemaker fitted at Broomfield
after being fed via a tube for two years. He said his surgery was
“genuinely life-changing”.
For surgeon Sri Kadirkamanathan, it was opportunity to catch up
with many of his former patients.
“It was a wonderful night. It was lovely to see so many patients
and donors,” said Sri. “The patients are doing so well and are
FOCUS
feeling the benefit of the
robotic surgery.
“A lot of people raised money
for us and they all could see
how worthwhile their
fundraising is. Many of them
said to me that it was great to
raise money for a local cause
and then see where the money had been spent.
“Ultimately it’s all about the results and it’s so gratifying to see
everyone doing so well. I’m humbled by everyone’s generosity.”
Event organiser Charlotte Jefcoate, fundraising coordinator for
Mid Essex Hospitals Charity, said: “It was fantastic to gather
together so many people who have either contributed to or
benefited from the robot.
“It was great to be able to showcase the work of our world-class
team here at Broomfield. We couldn’t do it without incredible
legacy donors and amazing fundraisers. Their generosity has made
such a difference to so many people’s lives.
“To continue doing this brilliant work we need keep chipping away
at the target. If anyone would like to know more about the impact
of robotic surgery or contribute to our appeal, please get in touch
with the charity because this technology is changing people’s lives
in Essex and beyond.”

Tired Old Town
Over to
you...
Health Clinic and Sainsbury’s access
Following comments by residents regarding access to the Health
Clinic and Sainsbury’s, particularly by pedestrians and cyclists, I have
now made enquires of the Chelmsford Planning department and
Essex County Councillor Kevin Bentley regarding several of the issues
identified. The issues I have raised, and awaiting answers for, are laid
out below:
I have now tracked down the agreed offsite works that were agreed
for the development and it appears very little of the work has been
completed or even started. However, I am pleased to say that the
pedestrian crossing in the main site access road is now in place
following my initial contact with the planners. Also, having written to
Councillor Kevin Bentley about the dangerous condition of the A132
going out of town, I was pleased to see that a 50mph speed
restriction had been put in place for safety reasons. Now all we need
to know is when Essex County Council will be carrying out permanent
repairs to that road.
A serious safety concern is the pedestrian and cycle access routes to
the site and the pavement works specified to achieve access in a safe
manner. My recent observations indicate that there are currently no
cycles using to the site; I suspect that cyclists are fearful of the lack
of proper access routes with appropriate signage being in place.
There is also provision in the offsite agreed works for informal
crossings in Hullbridge Road, north of the King Edwards Road
junction - this work has yet to be started.
The informal pedestrian crossing to the west of the new roundabout
is being used by visitors to the Health Centre and the store as the
obvious shortest route from the relocated bus stop. It has been
reported that vehicles are not stopping, particularly at peak times. I
believe that this risk could be eliminated by re-routing the buses
around King Edwards Road and the B1012, creating a bus stop to
the east of the roundabout near to the light-controlled crossing. This
route was used during the roadworks, when Hullbridge Road was
shut, and benefitted passengers who needed to get to the eastern
industrial areas from both inside and outside of the town.
Residents of Brent Avenue have recently complained to me about
the Hullbridge Road pedestrian crossing beacon flashing into their
houses along with headlights from vehicles leaving the site. I have
asked if something could be done to alleviate these issues for
affected residents.
I read the letter from 'A Proud Resident' in issue 930 with some
amusement! The writer began by criticising fellow residents for
constantly complaining about developments in SWF and then went
on to fill the bulk of their letter with complaints about the state of
SWF! Most of the complaints I read in this publication are totally
justified and are entirely a result of the actions of faceless nobody's
who are employed on exorbitant salaries to make decisions on our
behalf without any real understanding of what makes a town work.
Whilst many will welcome the new BP station, let's remember it has
put Steve's Garage virtually out of business. Is that the cost of
progress? Now we have yet another petrol station fighting for trade.
As for Sainsbury's, it's debatable if it was really needed here. Most
of the trade seems to be coming from out of town - from elsewhere
on the Dengie - so is leading to more traffic, more congestion and
more pollution. And no, I'm not even going to get started on the
utterly stupid roundabout and pedestrian crossing arrangements. As
for the 'health centre' this was obviously from the outset a
'sweetener' by the developer to get the Sainbury's development
approved and the shortcomings are already obvious for all to see.
Too remote, difficult to access, limited parking, insufficient floor
space, this list is endless. But, yet again we are dictated to by faceless
bureaucrats who insist they know better than us. Many of those who
were in favour of the new Sainsbury's when first proposed felt it
would make Asda 'pull up their socks' or similar comments.I'm afraid
the reality is very different. Asda control almost all the retail outlets
in the town centre and deliberately make it almost impossible for
anyone to trade in direct competition to them. This is why we have a
town full of coffee shops and restaurants. Asda are actively
responsible for the dreadful state of our town and deliberately wish
to keep it that way. If Sainsbury's take too much trade from Asda,
which is quite likely, Asda will react firstly by cutting costs - firstly staff
(mostly people who live in SWF), then availability and if that fails, they
will shut up shop and walk away leaving the town centre derelict. Be
careful what you wish for!!
Asda Opticians
D Chapman. 20 years in SWF
I thoroughly agree "In praise of Asda opticians" letter in issue 931
and I also agree entirely with the writer who believed "you get what
you pay for". However, I too went to a well known local opticians on
this premis but the glasses I was supplied with for an eye watering
(sorry for the pun) over £600 just did not work. I watched the
lunchtime news in the kitchen only to have streaming, burning eyes
and could not see the written text on the lounge TV in the evening
when my husband had to read everything to me.
I returned to the optician and had my eyes re-tested. I was told I had
cataracts, only weeks after the new glasses were prescribed. I was
then, after several complaints refunded with half of what I had spent.
I then went to Asda opticians, came away a week later with new
frames fitted with varifocal, reactive lens for £129. No more
streaming, burning eyes and the optician told me the lens I had from
the local optician were twice as strong as they should have been
hence the discomfort and inability to see!
My Colleagues and I will be following up on all these concerns with
the relevant departments and I will keep you posted regarding their
resolution.

More Trees Please

those who find it difficult to travel to the outskirts of the town (e.g.
the elderly and those with mobility problems who haven’t got their
own transport) some time to work out the practicalities of getting to
the new health facility.
On 16th Aug 2019 I wrote to one of the PPG Chairs:
“I offered Greenwood Surgery a couple of times (once at a meeting
attended by Kerry) to ‘the NHS’ for between 3 and 6 months after
the move - principally as a backup in case something goes wrong.
(They were and are planning to move ALL the practices into the new
premises in a single weekend - which sounds to me like a recipe for
disaster.) As they are putting a new computer system into the new
building I thought that, if they left the old one in Greenwood Surgery
for a time, they would have a backup. The staff could work there if
there are any unexpected problems. The NHS representatives
showed not the slightest interest.”
We see in the press and on T.V. that we must plant millions of trees.
There WAS, a beautiful 100 year old Horse chestnut in the grounds
of The New Life Church.
It was planted when the original Baptist church was opened in 1923.
It has now been felled!
This tree would breath out more oxygen in one night, than 500 whip
will in their first year,
If they all grow successfully.
Councillors of towns, all over, must do more to see that mature trees
are noted, and saved
in their areas, as these trees are benefiting the environment know!
Sth. Woodham has very few mature trees, we must protect them.
I hope the Town Council buys into the tree planting programme in
the near future.
Bill Thomas
Health Centre
Last week’s ‘Over to You’ column gave the impression that the
opening of the new Health Centre was marred by unexpected
problems. Maybe so - but the cardinal rule that applies when you’re
dealing with patients’ lives and health is to expect the unexpected -
because something ‘unexpected’ invariably happens. It is therefore
simply a matter of common sense to have adequate contingency
plans in place.
The letter from the Patient Participation Group (PPG) Chairs (who
have come out of this affair very well - not least because they
campaigned hard to keep the town centre Health Clinic open and
because the PPG members were there in numbers at the opening of
the new facility to help confused patients) makes it clear that they
long ago pointed out the inadequacy of the car parking
arrangements. That said, if the decision makers, the shadowy figures
who have kept their heads well below the parapet throughout, had
staggered the move it would have lessened the adverse impact on
patients ... and, failing that, if they’d just kept just one town centre
facility open in the short term it would have taken some of the
pressure off the car park and made getting over the inevitable
teething problems much easier.
They had ample opportunity to do so. I can’t speak for the other
practices but there was certainly one facility on offer. When the new
medical facility was mooted I was (like others) slow to realise that the
hidden agenda was to close ALL the town centre healthcare facilities
- but as soon as it began to dawn on me I raised the subject of a
contingency plan. In a letter to Kerry Harding, Head of Estates dated
the 14th of April 2014 I said:
“I have already offered to extend the period during which the
existing Greenwood Surgery building remains open from two months
to for example 4 months (at no charge to NHS England other than a
contribution to the utility bills) as I suspect there will be a public
outcry when the surgeries in the town centre close – and it will take
FOCUS
On 16th October 2019 I emailed one of the practice managers to
say:
“I imagine there will be major problems in the first few days and
weeks after the move and it will be helpful if there is an adequate
contingency plan. That said I imagine those in high places who give
the practices their orders would rather "die in a ditch" than admit to
problems ... even if it is to the detriment of all concerned. Even so, I
think it's wise to have a bolt hole in case of emergencies.”
After witnessing the shambolic manner in which the closure of the
Clements House Surgery was handled we were promised that
lessons would be learnt. It’s taking a long time!

A LITTLE KNOWN CAUSE OF HOMELESSNESS. As Christmas
approaches, prompted by the Radio 4 St Martin-in-the-Fields Christmas
Appeal, our thoughts turn to the homeless ... especially on nights when
there's a sharp frost.
It's well known that drink and drugs are often contributory factors to
homelessness. The Lancet 'Public Health' journal, however, points out
that one in two people who are homeless may have experienced a
traumatic brain injury (TBI) in their lifetime ... and around one in four of
them may have experienced a traumatic brain injury that is moderate
or severe
Lead author Jacob Stubbs says: “Traumatic brain injury may be an
important factor in the complex health challenges faced by this
population. Our work emphasizes that health care professionals and
frontline workers should be aware of the burden of TBI in this
population, and how it relates to health and functioning.”
The findings also suggested that TBI is consistently associated with
poorer self-reported physical and mental health, suicidality and suicide
risk, memory concerns, increased health service use and higher criminal
justice system involvement.
It's a chicken and egg situation - what the research shows is that TBI
can be both a cause and a consequence of homelessness.
Whatever the cause we should do something about it during the
season of goodwill. I've often been told not to give money to the
homeless "as they'll only spend it on drink or drugs". (What the hell
do they think I'm going to spend it on?!?) Better to give food ... or
donate money to one of the homeless charities such as this excellent
local one: https://chesshomeless.org
Time may be a great healer, but it’s a lousy beautician. Dorothy
Parker
STATINS FOR THE YOUNG? The Lancet reports that long-term
estimates suggest a link between cholesterol levels and risk of heart
disease and stroke. We usually think of this in terms of risk over ten
years ... but here they were far more ambitious.
We're told that this new study is the most comprehensive analysis of
long-term risk for cardiovascular disease related to non-high-density
lipoprotein (non-HDL) cholesterol ... it including almost 400,000 people
from 19 countries who were followed for up to 43.5 years (median 13.5
years follow-up) between 1970 to 2013. (Do I hear you say WOW?)
What is non-HDL cholesterol? Well ... the people in the know have
realised that there are more bad things in the blood than 'bad' (LDL)
cholesterol - so they lump them all together and call them 'non-HDL
cholesterol' (on the basis that, anything that isn't good, is bad.)
Because this looks so far ahead, this longer-term evidence may be
particularly important in people aged under 45 years.
Are you ready for a few figures? What do you mean 'NO'! Listen up -
this is important!!! Depending on cholesterol level and number of
cardiovascular risk factors, men and women aged under 45 years have
a 12-43% or 6-24% risk (respectively) of having fatal or non-fatal heart
disease or stroke by the age of 75 years.
HOWEVER ... If non-HDL cholesterol levels were halved, women and
men younger than 45 years with starting levels of non-HDL cholesterol
between 3.7-4.8 mmol/litre and who had two additional cardiovascular
risk factors could reduce their risk from around 16% to 4%, and from
around 29% to 6%, respectively.
This sounds pretty amazing ... but, if you start young, you may have to
take statins for a very long time to reap the benefit. Perhaps the twice
yearly injections which are on their way (all being well) might be a
tempting alternative to those at high risk.
As ever, more research is needed before docs start dishing out statins
or similar willy nilly to those in the first flush of middle age. That said,
the take home message is that the most comprehensive analysis of its
kind suggests that there is a strong link between non-HDL cholesterol
levels and long-term risk for cardiovascular disease in people aged
under 45 years ... and not just at older ages.
I really don't like living there but I have to for health reasons; I'm
very paranoid, and New York's the only place where my fears are
justified. Anita Wise
MORE MOBILE PHONE MISERY: Last week I timidly suggested
rationing mobile phone use because of their role in distracting
adolescents from participating in enough exercise to keep them
healthy.
Since then we have heard of another problem associated with their
use. Sean Coughlan reports for the BBC: "Almost a quarter of young
people are so dependent on their smartphones that it becomes like an
addiction, suggests research by psychiatrists. The study, from King's
College London, says such addictive behaviour means that people
become "panicky" or "upset" if they are denied constant access. The
youngsters also cannot control the amount of time they spend on the
phone.
The study warns that such addictions have "serious consequences" for
mental health. The research, published in BMC Psychiatry, analysed 41
studies involving 42,000 young people in an investigation into
"problematic smartphone usage". The study found 23% had behaviour
that was consistent with an addiction - such as anxiety over not being
able to use their phone, not being able to moderate the time spent
and using mobiles so much that it was detrimental to other activities."
I have been saying for years that, when it comes to Smartphones, we
are all part of an experiment - we won't know all the long term
problems associated with their use for years to come. One problem is
all too apparent - to give one example, you'll remember that Ian Russell
accused Instagram of being implicated in the death of his daughter
Molly, aged 14, who killed herself after viewing self harm images on
Instagram.
Smartphone use is a problem that will need to be addressed sooner
or later ... probably later given that, for now, young and old alike are
addicted to our phones.
CLIVE JAMES is dead ... in case you missed it. He did well to last until
he was 80 ... at one time he admitted: "I smoked so much that I needed
the hubcap of a Bedford van as an ashtray.”
I once got involved with him when he was putting together a show at
The Arts Theatre in Cambridge in order to raise money to save The
Kite (an historic area not a million miles away from the theatre.) He got
together the great and the good - people like Michael Palin, Julie
Covington and Rob Buckman - remember him? He was a very bright
doc, a consultant oncologist, who was also a first rate comedian. I was
part of a revue group at the time - and quite how we got involved was
always a mystery to me and remains so to this day. At our best we
might have got away with it - just - but, as it happens, when it came to
the big day we were shambolic. As we slowly died onstage, I realised
that I should settle down and do something sensible (like being a GP).
He was charming about it - but we were mightily relived that he wasn't
there in his role as a critic!
He was an exceptionally talented man - but for all his achievements it
is his TV crits for the Observer that stick in the mind. At the dawn of
the era in which new technology speeded up the game dramatically he
wrote of a men's singles match at Wimbledon that the players sounded
like "woodcutters in a petrified forest". So loud were their gasps that
before long they forgot about the ball and attempted to hit the grunts
instead. He once described William Shatner’s acting in Star Trek as: “a
thespian technique picked up from someone who once worked with
somebody who knew Lee Strasberg’s sister.”
The world is a better place for having had him in it!

BASILDON HOSPITAL SUPPORTS WORLD STROKE DAY
Staff from Basildon Hospital’s Hyper Acute Stroke unit marked
World Stroke Day recently with a vital refresher study session on
how to spot the signs of a stroke.
More than sixty staff from different clinical teams including
physiotherapists, specialist stroke nurses and speech and language
therapists attended to discuss the importance of identifying the
signs of a stroke early, how to help a stroke patient and how to
educate others on how to prevent a stroke.
A stroke is a serious life
threatening medical condition
that happens when the blood
supply to part of the brain is cut
off. It can happen to anyone at
any time and is the leading
cause of disability worldwide
and the second leading cause
of death. World Stroke Day
sets out to raise awareness of
the prevention and treatment
of this condition and how to
support patients with their
recovery.
Stroke speciality doctor at
Basildon Hospital Dr
Jayakumar Jagadeesan
explained:
“Our study day was an
important event to highlight
the seriousness of this
condition and was an
opportunity to remind our staff
that fast access to treatment
saves lives and improves
recovery. World Stroke Day
brings global attention to the
need for all of us to take action
and prevent our own risk of
stroke.”

GREAVESEY DOES Jurassic KENYA Coast - By Tim Saunders
Above: Pink tram at Seaton Tramway.
Above: On the beach at Beer.
Heidi, Henry and Harriett Saunders riding
tractors at Pennywell Farm.
Charmouth.
The marching band at Bridport Carnival.
Millions of years ago the Jurassic Coast was under water. Creatures
that swam in these waters have since turned into fossils. These can still
be discovered by a keen eye, making for a wonderful holiday
memento.
We have visited the area before, and in fact I grew up here, but it is
only now that the children are old enough that our attentions turn to
this hugely important aspect of Devon and Dorset. At school Heidi (6)
has been learning about famous Lyme Regis fossil hunter Mary Anning.
We didn’t imagine being able to walk on a beach and find any fossils
but at world renowned Charmouth, this is just what we do. There’s a
fascinating heritage centre that even David Attenborough has visited,
and the staff will happily confirm if what you bring back from the beach
are genuine fossils. Never before have we visited a beach where so
many people are bent double looking for ammonites. The staff at the
centre recommend that we walk down the beach for 10 minutes for
the best fossil hunting spot, which we duly do and while away the best
part of a glorious summer’s day carefully sifting through pebbles. At
the end of the day we all find something of which to be proud.
Alighting at Seaton Tramway station, Seaton Jurassic shouts out to be
visited. We learn that a massive Jurassic landslide exposed fossils and
we are taken on a memorable interactive journey through time. The
designers have really excelled themselves incorporating period
furnishings through to 3D imagery. There are 13 boxes to discover
where the children have to answer questions and at the end they
receive a gemstone. Harriett (8), Heidi (6) and Henry (3), all avid
watchers of TV’s Octonauts are instantly drawn to what they call the
FOCUS
Octopod where they can see underwater life. There is also a large
outside area that runs alongside Seaton Tramway. Here there is plenty
of flora and fauna including dreaded horsetail, which we gain a
newfound respect for discovering that this stuff that we have resorted
to burning in our garden to eradicate, actually existed before
dinosaurs.
After a bite to eat we make our way to the beach where we fly our
kite. And then it’s time to board the tram back to Colyford. We love
this form of transport. Sitting on the top deck with the wind blowing
our hair we can really appreciate how it works as the cable above us
captures the electricity to power it. The backs of the seats can be
pushed forward or back so that no matter which direction it travels,
passengers sit the right way round. The journey cuts through wetlands
beside the River Axe where there is a nature reserve featuring all kinds
of birds including curlews and fields where there are cows and sheep
grazing and even rabbits.
Crossing the main road we wave to the traffic. Along the way model
dinosaurs have been placed beside the track, guaranteeing to keep
the attention of younger passengers. It is such a relaxing and enjoyable
form of transport, reminding older passengers of how they used to
travel in their childhood.
At Beaminster Museum, Brian is a mine of information. His enthusiasm
is infectious and helps bring the wonderful exhibits in the museum to
life. So much can be learnt about the area from the fascinating axes
used for killing mammoths through to smuggling, crime and the
hanging of witches. Henry particularly enjoys the naughty burglar that

a local WI group created. We also learn about the importance of flax
to the area, which is further emphasised by our visit to Bridport
Museum. “Locals stake claim to winning the Battle of Trafalgar,” smiles
Brian, adding that sails made in the area, to exacting Royal Navy
specifications, were used on the ships in Nelson’s fleet.
“You must visit Bridport Carnival,” recommends Shige, owner of Hell
Barn Cottages in Chideock, where we stay. So we do and enjoy seeing
the floats.
Hell Barn Cottages, a complex of five self-catering stone cottages, is
only about 10 miles away down a quiet country lane. We stay in
Rosemary Cottage. The first thing we notice is that we can park
directly outside the accommodation, which is really helpful for
unloading. Inside it’s well presented, comfortable and clean.
Downstairs is open plan given to sitting and dining and off this is a
sizeable kitchen. There’s a downstairs bathroom and shower. Upstairs
are two bedrooms, easily accommodating the five of us. We enjoy
relaxing here and there is a very popular games room where the
children play and so do the adults, given chance: snooker, badminton
and table tennis. There’s a go-kart that Henry thoroughly enjoys riding.
One evening Caroline, Harriett and I are able to play a game of
badminton and it’s great to see that Harriett’s co-ordination is
improving. Heidi and Henry are on the swings. It’s an idyllic setting
and it’s no surprise that Shige, who has run this business for over 20
years and cooks Japanese food for guests, receives many repeat visits.
For us, holidays are all about mooching around and trying to relax if
the children will let us. Our first attempt is over the border in Devon
at Beer where we visit various exhibitions and an antiques centre. And
then it’s picnic time and the beach. Even though it is pebble, on a
warm summer’s day, we have to just lie down and savour the view.
The furthest we travel is some 70 miles away to Pennywell Farm near
Buckfastleigh. Here the children hold rabbits, very cute piglets and
feed the goats. They are even able to walk goats and watch piglet
racing. The bamboo maze that leads to a tower gives views across the
Devonshire countryside where we see gorgeous brown deer. When
we are not admiring the animals the children are playing on the toy
tractors and Henry loves the excavator where he can dig sand,
returning to this throughout the day. “My favourite thing is cuddling
the piglets,” he admits. Pennywell is a great day out.
With his local knowledge, Shige recommends a hairdresser for
Caroline in Bridport. She is happy with the results. Bridport itself is a
busy market town with a good mix of independent and national
retailers. For me it is the old bookshop with its tables of books lining
the pavement that is a joy to visit. Here I find some gems that at some
point I shall enjoy reading.
Bridport Museum is another must to visit. Here we learn that the town
is famous for producing nets. So next time you watch a football match
the nets have probably been made in Bridport. During our visit the
museum proudly exhibits the watercolour that JMW Turner produced
of Bridport Harbour and it is a privilege to see it. There’s just chance
to relax in the Borough Gardens where we enjoy looking at the flowers
and spy some butterflies and a dragonfly.
Just over 20 miles away at Ilminster we visit a Creative Coverage art
exhibition featuring selected professional artists and craftspeople.
We dine at the Talbot Arms at Uplyme, a busy and vibrant pub run by
Wendy and Steve where Caroline, Heidi and I enjoy beef and ale pie
with chips while Harriett and Henry have sausages and chips. There’s
an ice cream dessert for the children. It’s a friendly pub at the centre
of the community and we have a good chat to Wendy who explains
how close knit and supportive the locals are, raising funds for
renovating the village hall, which has become well used. From here it
is possible to walk cross country from the pub to Lyme Regis. A night
time walk here sees us trying to find the grave of Mary Anning. We
make it to the beach.
The following day we leave Hell Barn for home at 10am.

PLAY CARD GAMES
WITH A DECK OF CARDS
Old Maid
Players: 2 to 6
How to Play: First remove one of the Queens from the deck
before dealing all the cards face-down, one at a time to each
player in a clockwise rotation. Players then look at their cards
and remove any pairs, laying them face down on the table.
The first player to go (usually the one to the left of the dealer)
then holds their entire fan of cards face down and allows the
player to their left to choose one. If they make a pair, it’s
placed face up, and play continues in a similar fashion around
the table. Eventually, all the pairs are made and one player,
the “Old Maid” is stuck holding the lone Queen.
Go Fish
Players: 2 to 5
How to Play: If there are two to three players, deal each
player seven cards face down, one at a time, in a clockwise
rotation. If there are more players, everybody gets five cards.
The rest are the ‘pond’ and are scattered face down in the
middle of the table. After organizing the cards in their hand by
number or royals (Jacks, Queens, etc.), the player to the left
of the dealer begins by asking anyone in the group if they
have any of a specific number, one they already have in hand.

For example, Matt might ask: “Julie, do you have any Aces.” If
Julie does, she turns them all over to Matt and he can ask if
she has any of a different number. If she doesn’t, she says
“Go Fish!” and Matt selects a card from the pond. If Matt
collects enough Aces through his inquiries to form a book, he
must lay them face up on the table. After collecting a card
from the pond, however, his turn ends. Play continues
clockwise until all the books have been collected. The player
with the most sets wins.

Slap Jack
Players: 2 to 6
How to Play: Deal out the entire deck, face-down and one at a
time, until each player had a stack of cards. The person sitting
to the left of the dealer then turns over one card and places it
face-up in the middle of the table. Moving to the left, each
player follows suit and does the same. When a Jack is played,
however, players race to be the first person to physically slap
the pile of cards in the middle of the table. The first to do so
wins the pot and adds them to the bottom of their card stack.
When a player runs out of cards, they have one more chance
to slap a Jack to get back in the game, but if they fail to do so,
they’re out. Play continues until one person collects all the
cards.
