ST MARYS C OF E PRIMARY SCHOOL
BULB PLANTING
On Tuesday 19th November our Year 2/3
children worked alongside the local Parks
Volunteers to plant some beautiful crocus
bulbs in the communal area in Woodham
Ferrers by St Marys School.
We are very proud of the Chestnut Class
children who were impeccably behaved and
planted over 100 bulbs.
The children learnt how to use dibbers and worked very hard to
ensure the bulbs were evenly spread around the green, they are
very excited for them to surface in the spring time.
We hope the local community agree that they did a super job and
enjoy watching the bulbs grow.
All the staff at Studio One
would like to wish past, present and future
clients a very Merry Christmas.
Best wishes

"KIND OF BLUE" CHRISTMAS CONCERT.
A SELL OUT!
If you were hoping to come to the "Kind of Blue" gig in the Bell
Woodham Ferrers on the afternoon of December 15th, and haven't
a ticket, then I'm afraid you are out of luck, because, due to the
fantastic response from so many local residents, we have sold out
of our £5 entry tickets.
We are thus very pleased how this will benefit our 2 charities
(Breast cancer and Crohn's disease), and are looking forward to an
entertaining afternoon, with good music, delicious food and plenty
of seasonal festivity.
So those lucky people who have a ticket you have a treat in store.
Those of you who will not be fortunate enough to attend the 15th,
fear not, for on January 26th, March 1st and March 29th 2020,
"Kind of Blue" are going to experiment by holding our gigs on
Sunday afternoons, 2 to 4.30 pm., instead of Monday evenings, for
our mixture of modern jazz club music.
If this works, we may continue these new times in the Bell hall, for
the rest of next year.
So, whether it be December 15th, January 26th we hope to see
you soon.

BASILDON HOSPITAL RAISES AWARENESS OF THE IMPORTANCE OF RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT
The Research and Development (R&D) department at Basildon Hospital currently contributes to over 60 studies that benefit patients
and the wider NHS. Medical research plays an essential role in developing new treatments, devices and methods of managing disease.
By constantly striving to improve the effectiveness of existing treatments we will be able to provide better care to our patients, not just
at Basildon but across our hospital group.
Recently, the R&D team hosted an open day to showcase the great research the hospital supports and invited staff and patients to come
along to find out how this research improves the current and future health and care of our local population.
Perry Curley is one patient currently taking part in a clinical research trial, FLAIR. FLAIR (Front-Line therapy in CLL) trials new therapies
in patients with previously untreated chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL).
Perry said:
“My family and I have seen a
significant improvement in my
health, all thanks to the work of
our hospital and other
healthcare researchers. It is
essential that these trials and
others continue so we can make
improvements to treatments
and make them available to all
who need them.”
Ashley Solieri, associate
director of research and
development at Basildon
Hospital added:
CHRISTMAS JUMPER SUNDAY
Sunday 22nd December 2pm @ Club Woodham
“It was excellent to see Perry
doing so well and to see other
patients and our staff showing
such an interest in our research
activity. Without our patients
agreeing to take part, we would
not be able to support the
many studies that we do. Our
team is passionate about
improving outcomes for our
patients and contributing to
evidence based treatments and
healthcare delivery of the
future.”
Everybody welcome, have you got what it takes to
show us your Christmas Jumper?
Come and join in the fun and a chance to win in
our Christmas Hamper raffle!
Live Music from Monkeys Wedding
One other important study that
the R&D team are currently
supporting is GLAD (Genetic
Links to Anxiety and
Depression). Research has
shown that 30%-40% of the risk
of depression and anxiety is
genetic. Taking part in the
GLAD study will help
researchers to understand
these genetic links and enable
more effective treatments to be
developed for patients who
suffer with anxiety and
depression.
If you would like to take part,
participation is simple and
you can register by following
the instructions at

SOUTH WOODHAM MOTOR SPARES & CYCLES
Bill Pearce, the new owner of South Woodham Motor Spares & Cycles had to fill some big boots when he took over from David Barker (who was the
previous owner for almost forty years) and Calvin Granger, who helped manage the Maldon branch and then South Woodham branch over the years.
In May last year, both David and Calvin died within 5 days of each other. It was very sad for everyone who knew them and a great loss to the community.
This was also a difficult time for Bill, having worked at the shop whilst David and Calvin were having their respective treatments. They became great mentors
to him, trying to pass on all those years of experience, enabling him now, to take over the running of the business and carry on giving the excellent service
that the shop has been renowned for, over the past forty years.
Bill has completed various cycle courses to keep him up to
speed and ahead of the game with the latest repairs and
servicing. He will also be bringing his own specialist knowledge
in Batteries to the shop, from his previous employment and
offering expert advice on all types of batteries, which includes
Automotive, Garden, Mobility, Leisure, Marine, Motorcycle and
the latest AGM EFB Lithium Technology.
Bill would very much like to take this opportunity to thank all
the local community for all their help and support so far and
hope it may continue.
Summer 2020 Bill hopes to organise a Charity Bike Ride to raise
funds for Cancer Research in memory of David and Calvin.

Come on and Celebrate
It’s getting closer - weeks are turning into days, days into hours, hours into minutes, then on 25th December,
after the last sleep - it will be Christmas.
Shops are full of toys, presents, cards, wrapping paper and decorations. Lights are shining on houses and
trees, supermarket tills are full as we buy our food delights of mince pies, chocolate logs and of course the
turkey - the list could be endless. The economy figures are rising as we spend millions on this special event.
24/7 we are being encouraged to CELEBRATE!!
Recently it was the South Woodham Ferrers Christmas Fayre, there were various acts on stage and numerous stalls offering
Christmas goodies. However, one stall’s theme was ‘Happy Birthday Jesus’, celebrating His birthday with balloons, a birthday
cake on which children could place a candle and party bags which included a small book about Jesus. Two churches had joined
together and lovingly prepared the stall, having cooked amazing cakes which people could yummily enjoy. However, a particular
item caught my attention - there was a box stating ‘What Does Jesus Want For His Birthday’(Christmas). As people peeked into
the box the answer to that question was revealed - it was the face of the person looking inside as a mirror was reflecting their
image. This brings home a truth that Jesus wants each one of us to give ourselves as a present for his celebratory birthday. It is
put well in the last verses of two carols ‘Away in a Manger’ and ‘In the Bleak Midwinter’ –
BE NEAR ME LORD JESUS I ASK THEE TO STAY, CLOSE BY ME FOREVER, AND LOVE ME I PRAY. BLESS ALL THE DEAR
CHILDREN IN THY TENDER CARE, AND FIT US FOR HEAVEN TO LIVE WITH THEE THERE. AND WHAT CAN I GIVE HIM, POOR
AS I AM. IF I WERE A SHEPHERED I WOULD BRING A LAMB. IF I WERE A WISE MAN. I WOULD DO MY PART, YET WHAT I
CAN I GIVE HIM – GIVE MY HEART.
Yes, let’s Celebrate this Christmas, enjoy time with friends and family, have fun, give presents and enjoy wonderful food but can
I suggest we PAUSE and remember whose birthday it is and give Him the best present of all - OUR HEARTS………. COME ON
AND CELEBRATE, HIS GIFT OF LOVE, WE WILL CELEBRATE!!

YOUR HOSPITAL APPOINTMENT – DO YOU NEED TRANSPORT?
South Woodham Ferrers Community Care
is a local charity which provides a door to door service to take South Woodham residents, who have difficulty arranging their own
transport, to medical appointments, normally within the Basildon, Chelmsford, Braintree and Maldon area.
It is not intended as a transport service to local doctors' surgeries at The Crouch Vale Medical Centre.
Transport is provided by a pool of drivers.
How it works
Patient calls the Community Care Co-ordinator SANDRA 01245 321180 to request transport giving as much notice as possible.
Co-ordinator arranges a driver from the pool and rings the patient to advise of the driver's name and pick-up time.
On the day - the driver takes the patient to the appointment and waits for them before taking them home.
Patient puts a voluntary contribution in an envelope and gives to the driver.
There are suggested contribution rates, depending on the distance of the appointment, but it is entirely up to the patient.

NO SILENT NIGHT!
Many people gathered at the local Evangelical church to share
the Salvation Army's Annual Carols at Christmas, which is always
enhanced by the presence of a group of happy children from the
Elmwood Primary School, and the presence of brass music to
accompany the congregational singing. This year, twenty nine
children brilliantly contributed "Christmas Tree" and "All I Want
for Christmas is You." During the singing of "Away In A Manger"
some of them, suitably dressed in costume, made a beautiful
tableau around the manger bed. Pictures were taken, but we have
been requested not to publish these as some parents used their
right to stop any photographs of their children put into public
domain, and we honour that. This year, the band members were
from Wickford and Rayleigh Salvation Army Corps, under the
leadership of Deputy Bandmaster David Spencer (Rayleigh) and
gave a much appreciated musical contribution.
entered our world .. and the peace He can bring to each one of us
today.
May this Christmas, although there is so much strife and unrest
around us, bring calm to us as we realise the great love that God
has for each one of us, in the giving of His Son, Jesus Christ. May
we personally receive the greatest gift we could ever have in life,
and open our hearts and lives to Him. A Happy and Blessed
Christmas to everyone!
A sketch entitled "Silent Night" was presented by Home League
ladies together with Daniel Parker, who played the part of Joseph.
It dealt with all the noises occurring on the night of Christ's birth,
including those of animals stabled in the inn, (the children
delighting in performing those at the right time!) until baby Jesus
cries and all other noises cease. Mary hushes the baby, and speaks
of the noises to come in His later life- cheering crowds, angry
mobs, clash of steel, hammering of nails. She ends "but.. that is
not now .. now we praise God, and treasure in our hearts the
transforming peace your birth has brought us!" After a moment's
silence, everyone sang the carol "Silent Night" thinking more of
the reality of that first night-the noise as the Prince of Peace

LIVING WITH CANCER: The search for a cancer cure is overshadowing
"huge" progress being made in allowing sufferers of the disease to live
longer, the Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) has warned. A report in
The Telegraph goes on to say: "Survival time from cancer has roughly
doubled in a decade, with the average patient now living more than
10 years after first being diagnosed. But experts said those focusing
exclusively on a breakthrough to eliminate the disease meant positive
advancements in treatment were being "masked".
Just 28 per cent of people believe the disease can be controlled in the
long-term, according to an ICR-commissioned YouGov poll of members
of the public and cancer patients. In comparison, 46 per cent of people
said they believed heart disease can be managed in the long-term, and
77 per cent said the same for diabetes."
Caroline Davies in The Guardian picks up the story: The charity (ICR) is
calling for more attention to be given to cancer’s ability to resist
treatment so more people can live longer. One third of people
misunderstood the widely used term “all clear” to mean the disease is
completely cured, rather than simply undetectable and with the
potential to still return, the poll of 2,103 members of public and 366
patients found.
Only 60% understood the term “drug resistance” means cancer
treatment has stopped working, with many assuming the term related
to antibiotic treatment. Fifteen per cent of the public, and 16% of
cancer patients, were not aware that cancer can resist treatment and
return.
The ICR is launching the world’s first “Darwinian” drug discovery
programme at its new cancer centre aimed at increasing the proportion
of patients whose disease can be controlled long term. A final £14m
needs to be raised to finish the Centre of Cancer Drug Discovery, and
equip it with the state-of-the-art facilities needed for it ambitious
Darwinian drug programme. Scientists who will be working there
believe its pioneering approach can deliver long-term control and
effective cures for cancer comparable to progress made in HIV."
The article highlights the experience of Barbara Ritchie Lines who
"underwent eight years of treatment after being diagnosed with breast
cancer in 2005. Her cancer is now undetectable. She said: “When I first
got diagnosed, I was told that I had maybe only 12 months – but it’s
been 14 years, and here I am. I’m so grateful that I now have all this
time to spend with my new grandchildren.”
CD quotes a couple of experts. Dr Olivia Rossanese, who will be head
of biology at the centre, said: “We believe cancer should no longer be
a case of ‘cure or nothing’. At the ICR our aim is to discover many more
anti-evolution treatments to overcome drug resistance, so we can not
only cure a greater proportion of patients but also to give others with
advanced disease the chance of a much longer and better life”.
Prof Paul Workman, the ICR chief executive, said: “Overcoming the
challenge of cancer evolution and drug resistance is the key to
defeating cancer. If we can finish off cancer evolution, we will
effectively finish cancer.”
During my time in practice, several cancers were moved from the
'incurable' or 'difficult to cure' to the 'curable' category. Some years
ago I presented a programme on cancer for Channel 4 and, since that
time, advances such as immunotherapy have turned hopeless situations
into the upbeat scenarios of the sort described by Barbara Ritchie
Lines. Whilst this group of diseases still takes its toll, many patients do
now enjoy a good quality of life for many years after their diagnosis. In
September 'Lancet Oncology' reported that cancer survival in the UK
is improving ... although there's still room for further progress. As
treatment of the disease after initial diagnosis AND management of
recurrences improve, it's time for all of us to take a new 'all
encompassing' view of the state of play.
FLU JABS. Vaccines are in the news this week ... and the BBC's Duncan
Sleightholme has unearthed a worrying story. He reports that: "Kevin
Mutch was offered a flu vaccine by his GP because he has asthma, but
he declined it. When he then contracted the flu earlier this year, he had
to be put into an induced coma for three months to help his body to
fight the infection, during which he also contracted sepsis. Now
recovering, Kevin from Weymouth in Dorset, wants to share his story
to encourage others to take flu vaccines seriously."
Thanks Kevin for making the point! Sounds like you had a lucky escape.
It has been pointed out, though, that there is a heavy bill to be paid
by the NHS. One estimate is that the cost to the health service of this
sort of 'high tech' treatment over three months would be around
£80,000, possibly more. Even if you take the view that you've got to
be rather unlucky to suffer the same fate as Kevin, you have to admit
that it's a whole lot cheaper (and less traumatic) to have a flu jab so, if
you're at risk, (Google 'Who should have the flu vaccine? - NHS' to find
out if you are) you can see if your GP still has a supply. Failing that many
pharmacies still seem to have stocks.
DEATHS IN CHILDREN. The World Health Organization (WHO) is up
in arms ... again ... and it doesn't mince its words. It says that the Antivaxx
movement was complicit in 140,000 global measles deaths in
2018, mostly in children ... and the 'US Centers for Diseases Control
and Prevention' endorses this claim.
Pharmafile reports that: "Several countries lost their measles
elimination status in 2018. This included the UK, Albania, the Czech
Republic and Greece, while the US has been reporting its highest
number of cases for 25 years. This rise is in large part due to the
prominence of anti-vaxx misinformation campaigns.
Anti-vaccine movements have been around for centuries but the
modern incarnation has its roots in the 1990s. A study by Andrew
Wakefield, now widely debunked, said there was a link between
vaccines and ‘contracting’ autism. This false study has been parroted
and spread by notable individuals like Robert DeNiro, Robert F
Kennedy Jr and President Donald Trump.
Having a US President who often leans towards being a vaccine sceptic,
has helped garner legitimacy for a movement based on manufactured
evidence, and the results have been devastating. Other anti-vaccine
movements use isolated cases of vaccines causing death to spread
misinformation. One of the worst recent examples of a measles
epidemic is Samoa, where 39 people have died since October. The
World Health Organisation has blamed an anti-vaccine campaign for
most of the casualties. In 2015, immunisation rates were measured at
84% but in 2018 it had fallen dramatically to 31%."
Professor Heidi Larson, from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical
Medicine, said: “These numbers are staggering. Measles is the most
contagious of all vaccine-preventable disease threats and should be a
wake-up call.”
We're told that it's likely the number of measles deaths will increase,
with 413,000 reported cases by mid-November this year compared to
353,000 for the whole of last year.
Changing tack, I recently wrote about the damage measles does to
kids' ability to resist other infectious diseases. The Sanger Institute
reminds us of the problem: "Scientists have shown how measles causes
long-term damage to the immune system, leaving people vulnerable
to other infections. Researchers from the Wellcome Sanger Institute,
University of Amsterdam and their collaborators revealed that the
measles virus deletes part of the immune system’s memory, removing
previously existing immunity to other infections, in both humans and
ferrets. Importantly, the team showed for the first time that measles
resets the human immune system back to an immature baby-like state
with only limited ability to respond to new infections."
Needless to say this is just one more strong reason why patients should
ensure their kids are fully vaccinated. As for advising those of you who
keep ferrets ... a Mid-Essex spokes-ferret tells me that: "There is at
present no agreed vaccination policy for protecting us ferrets against
measles. Fortunately the disease is rare in our community but there is
always the potential for infections to cross the species barrier,
particularly when we draw blood by giving you a friendly nip, so we
recommend that those of you who love and cherish your furry friends
should make sure your family is protected against measles. If you don't
get it, we won't get it!"

The WI Inspiring Women
Ann Hardy was the speaker for our November meeting with a
talk titled ‘The Theatrical Costumier. Ann was brought up in
Stratford.
She wanted to be a dressmaker and when she left school she
applied for a job at Baldwins Department store. Sadly the pay
was only six shillings and her mother made her get a job at
Clarnico sweet factory as it was better paid.
Eventually she was able to get a four year apprenticeship with
Marshall & Snellgrove. It was very bespoke and she loved
working there.
It got taken over by Debenhams & Freebody, they changed
things and it was no longer bespoke and customers stopped
coming.
Ann decided to start looking for another position and saw an
advert in the Evening Standard for a job with the BBC at White
City. It sounded perfect but she didn’t get it. She applied for a
job at The Royal Opera House but again she didn’t get that
either. She applied for a job at Nathans and it was third time
lucky as she got the job.
Nathans was set up in 1790 in Time Street near by Regent Street
by the first Mr Nathan. In those days actors had costumes made
just for them but Nathans came up with the idea of hiring
costumes. Mr Nathan designed a label property of Management
props and this was sewn into every costume. The second Mr
Nathan was great friends with Charles Dickens and made many
of the costumes for the characters in his books.
Even QueenVictoria hired a costume for a Fancy Dress Ball Soon
after that they got The Royal Warrant.
Our present day Queen put on plays as a child with costumes
curtesy of Mr Nathan.
Ann showed us lots of photographs and letters from film stars
including Laurence Olivier, Anna Negal and James Mason. Ann
talked about Ellen Terry who made a beetle dress which has
been conserved by The National Trust. Ann explained about the
costumes used in the series “Sharp”and how they would rub dirt
and grease into the costume to make them look old.Deborah
Kerr wore a dress that Ann made. Nathans were taken over by
Burmans and later they got taken over by Angels.
The cloak that Alec Guiness wore in Star Wars was sold at
Bonhams for £54,000. Ann talked about the film “Gladiator” and
how they have to make the armour with lightweight materials.
Oliver Reed died halfway through filming so they had to
superimpose his head on to a look alike so that they could finish
the film.
On Ann’s first day she met Peter O’Toole, Vidal Sassoon did his
highlights for the part of Laurence of Arabia. Ann worked on
costumes for Anne of a 1000 days.
She worked on the costumes for Dora Bryan in “Hello Dolly” Ann
talked about The Bond films, In “Titanic” they had 23 dresses
for Kate Winslet and that in "Lord of The Rings” they had 15,000
costumes.
Ann talked about Tommy Steele and the film “Half a sixpence".
Ann adored Tommy Steele and many years later she wrote to
him saying that she had made the costumes for the film and she
was very disappointed with the impersonal letter she got back
from him.
It really was a fascinating and interesting talk and afterwards we
were able to look at all the photographs and letters.

SWF RUFC WEEKLY ROUNDUP
SWF 1st XV v Wanstead
The game started with the visitors showing the greater promise with
a series of attacks that threatened the Woodham line. Some great
defending kept them out, but pressure finally resulted in a penalty
to Wanstead in front of the posts. Fortunately for the home team the
kick was missed and that seemed to wake the lads up. For the rest
of the half it was the Woodham attack that dominated play. Strong
defending kept the home team at bay until an accidental offside
resulted in a Woodham scrum just inside the visitors 22. Quick ball
from the scrum and some fine passing out to James Price on the wing
allowed the speedster to cross the line for the only try of the day.
Alex Baker, having just missed a penalty in front of the posts, landed
the more difficult conversion.
After more Woodham attacks the lead was stretched to 10 points
with a further penalty from Baker. Wanstead couldn’t quite get their
attack going and when they looked to threaten, the Woodham
defence was equal to the challenge and pegged them back. The half
ended with home side on top with 10 unanswered points.
The home supporters could have expected the team to kick on in the
second half and build a big score, but this was not to be. Despite
having most of the possession, they simply couldn’t crack the
Wanstead defence. A series of mistakes and some silly penalties let
the visitors off the hook. The frustration may have got to the lads as
when Wanstead did manage to clear their lines and go on the attack,
they gave away penalties and allowed the visitors to reduce the lead.
Twice Wanstead were gifted kickable penalties which they took. With
the lead down to four points a tense closing 15 minutes was to follow.
Woodham continued to have the best of possession but just couldn’t
find that final killer pass to break the spirited Wanstead defence.
Fittingly it was a defender who produced the defining moment of the
game when, in the closing minute, one of Wanstead’s rare attacks
was halted by a bone crunching tackle from Sammy Sharp that not
only stopped the attack but gave the ball to the home team who
were able to put it into touch to close the game out. This was a must
win game for Woodham and they showed real spirit throughout. Both
sides turned in a massive defensive effort neutralising each other’s
attack but in the end it will be the home side who will feel a little
frustrated that they couldn’t turn possession and field position into
more points.
SWF U16 v Bancroft/Epping Upper Clapton
Woodham kicked off with the wind behind them, but the home side
were quickly pushing the visitors back towards their 22. Woodham
dug in for the onslaught, and after being pushed back to their 5m
line received some relief via a well-placed kick from Rhino, which with
a favourable bounce, took the visitors 10m inside the home teams
half.
Woodham put on the pressure and working the ball well at the
breakdown then shipping it to the backs had the first break through
from a determined Redmond to cross fir the first of the game. The
conversion from Rhino good the visitors took a good lead 0 -7.
Woodham’s scrum was working well, but the Home sides 7 was
making a nuisance of himself at every opportunity. Woodham’s line
out wasn’t fairing so well this week, with a taller home side using this
to their advantage, and the wind affecting the throw in. However, it
was Woodham who were to score again this time though Bullet,
crossing over through a final tackle to take the visitors 12 points clear.
A difficult conversion but cleanly taken by Rhino saw the lead extend
to 0-14.
There was then 15 minutes of play where both sides were battling
hard, before the home side broke the visitors defence to cross in the
corner via a well work try. The conversion missed Banclapton were
now looking to get back into contention. However, the score
remained unchanged at the half time whistle.
The second half saw both teams pushing hard with the play moving
from one end of the pitch to the other. Woodhams defence stood
strong within 5m of their line to push the home side back into their
own half. Play continued for another 25 minutes without either team
scoring, for play to be halted due to injury to Gerrard. It was clear
that play would not be able to continue so the ref called the game,
with Woodham taking the win.
Thankfully, after using the services of London Ambulance and the
local NHS, Gerrard was given a clean bill of health, although he is
sure to be aching tomorrow. Another good win for the Woods as
they head towards their final game of the year at home against
Thurrock on the 22 December.
SWF U15’s v Billericay
The home teams kick from the start went long and out of the dead
ball area and Billericay choose a scrum for the restart on the halfway
line. Nerves were soon calmed as SWF won the scrum and mounted
their first attack. The early momentum was now with SWF and within
four minutes, Jake got passed the ball from a maul 5m out and
dotted the ball down. Will C converted, 7-0, a great start.
The next try came from Ryan five minutes later, after a sustained
period of playing in the Billericay half and with Will C again
converting, 14-0. The next period of play was pretty even between
the teams but played mostly in Billericay’s half. A few substitutions
were made for the home side and one of these, Hamza, scored on
his debut with a great run on the wing. Will C converted. 21-0.
With the continuing pressure from SWF, it wasn’t long before Rowan
scored and Will C converting for the 4th time. 28-0. Throughout this
period, Billericay had battled against a very determined home team
and they had the reward of a converted try before half-time. 28-7.
With the wind now in their faces, SWF started the second half full of
confidence and it wasn’t long before Will C got the ball and got
himself on the wing and ran 30m to dot down. 33-7. Billericay came
back and scored with a converted try making it 33-14.
Within a minute SWF were back on the scoreboard through Zach
popping up on the right-hand side and running past the defenders
in this part of the pitch. Will B converted. 40-14. End to end stuff, a
great match for all to watch and there was still more to come.
Back on the pitch and eager for the ball, Hamza scored his second
try. 45-14. Billericay were not done and with a few minutes left they
scored and converted, making the final score 45-21 to SWF.
This was another great game of rugby played by 40+ lads who were
just there to play. It was played with great spirit from both sides and
a great deal of physicality. Well done to both teams. Next week is
home to Eton Manor for the next league match.
SWF U9’s v Romford & Gidea Park
All the players put in a great shift in the two games we played.
In the first game we focused on passing and offloading the ball at
the tackle which they carried out well, even though it was really windy
we still kept the ball.
In the second game we continued with the offloading, but had a
further focus on tackling early. This the players listened to and were
tackling better. We even got a few turnovers via the seven tackle rule,
to regain possession of the ball. The coaching team were proud that
as a team they all put in a huge effort and are all improving their
game play each week.
Medals could have been handed out to all the players but this week
the Medal winners were:
Leo, for really tackling well and showing great resilience and
determination. Even when a bit hurt he still wanting to get back on
the pitch and get stuck in.
The other was Harry T. Today as captain, he showed great leadership,
keeping all the team included in the game, giving them the chances
with the ball and putting in a great effort himself on the pitch.
As I say great effort from all the players:
Jake, Charlie, Olly, Dan, Archie, Luke, Harry S and Henry. All
winners!!!

BURNHAM TABLE TENNIS LEAGUE - PRESS REPORT
Division 1 – Fambridge on a Roll
Even with a game in hand the Fambridge Boys have stormed to the
top of the league with their third 10-0 whitewash of the season and
now look the team to catch. Regulars Liam Squirrell and Mark Stones
were joined by the ever young John Poysden to overcome a Stow A
trio that were only able to register 2 individual games all evening such
is the strength of this Fambridge side. Of their nearest rivals only
Mapledene A recorded a win as they defeated Maldon A 6-3 with both
teams only fielding 2 players it was officially the shortest game of the
season so far. In the mid-table battles Cold Norton B continued their
fine season with a 9-1 thumping of West Maldon B winning all their
singles and graciously giving up the doubles – the hat-trick kings were
led by Eric Green who only dropped a single set during the evening’s
play. Not to be outdone Mapledene B also recorded a 9-1 victory –
this time against the bottom team from Stow B. Hat-tricks for Andy
Seaman and Paul Brown led the way, but the most impressive
performance was from Division 1 debutant Peter Chastin, currently
plying his trade in Division 3, who was able to record his team’s single
victory but was also his team’s most competitive player against all 3
Mapledene players – surely one for the Stow selection committee to
ponder! The match betwixt West Maldon A and Woodham A had to
be abandoned due to a serious shoulder injury to West Maldon’s Chris
Buer – we all wish Chris a speedy and full recovery.
Division 2 – Mapledene Stretch Their Lead
It was top 5 versus bottom 5 week for Division 2 and the results went
to form as all of the top sides ran out comfortable winners. A Barrie
Delf inspired Mapledene C stretched their lead at the head of the table
with a comprehensive 8-2 victory over Maldon D. Hat-tricks for Delf
and Patrick White provided the foundation for the victory, but they
also combined for a straight sets doubles win too. Both Maldon B and
C were also involved in 8-2 scorelines this week, but in a more positive
manner than their D team compatriots. The B team blitzed West
Maldon C with the ever reliable Colin Napper recording the only hattrick
of the night, and the C team overcame Blackwater A where the
unthinkable happened as Blackwater’s talisman Alan Scammell
recorded his first blank of the season and his team-mates out-scored
him. For the C team young Thomas Page was on scintillating form
winning all his singles and combining with the not-so-young Brian
Riedling for the doubles. In the Woodham derby the B team came out
on top 7-3 thanks to hat-tricks from Allan Steel and Luca Bailey, Given
their dominance in the singles you would have thought the doubles
was a ‘gimme’ but they somehow managed to yank a defeat form the
jaws of victory as the C team’s experienced duo of Alan Dadswell and
Chris Crooks added to their singles wins. Although Crooks had to
work extremely hard against Ewan Hynd for his sole victory – he
eventually won the decisive opening set 20-18, by which point umpire
Val Board had run out of fingers and toes and resorted to a scoreboard.
A fully loaded Mayland A continue their climb up the table with an 8-
2 win away at the under preforming Cold Norton C – Peter Lucraft had
the only singles win for Cold Norton whereas both Ralph Gibson and
Steve Aspland recorded hat-tricks for Mayland.
Division 3 – Woodham Encroach
With runaway leaders Stow D afforded a week off, their two closest
rivals were up against each other in the battle for the runner up and
promotion spot. Woodham D took their chance with a fine 7-3 victory

Below: – David Meah (Woodham
D) recording a hat-trick this week
over West Maldon D to slip into that coveted no 2 slot. Woodham new
boy David Meah was on sparkling form to record 4 wins on the night.
The closest match was between Meah and the ever improving Noah
Sage – it went to 5 sets, and deuce, and then 13-13 before Meah
closed out the enthralling encounter 15-13 to secure the nights
bragging rights. Both these players deserve to be playing in higher
divisions next year. Michael Pratley continues to rack up the points
with his sixth hat-trick and 5th ‘player-of-the-match’ award this season
as his Burnham A side overcame Stow E 7-3. Pratley’s most impressive
win was over Stow’s Jason Bush who has been in fine form over recent
weeks. St Lawrence A stumbled a bit with a draw against the
experienced trio from Stow F, but were grateful to have Karen Braney
in their ranks as she recorded consecutive hat-tricks for the first time
this season – if she continues this form her odds for the individual
Ladies crown will drop significantly and she will certainly be the ‘one
to avoid’ in early rounds. Mayland B’s Jon Stevens continues his one
man assault on the opposition as he was unbeaten yet again in his
team’s 4-6 defeat to Blackwater B. Stevens is currently on 94% win
rate and is sitting in second place in the averages for this division –
some season he is having.

won four out of the six games, with another six games to play.
Roll ups at Champions Manor continued to the end of November when reluctantly we had to concede that even with scarves, gloves and
thermals, it was not much fun in the increasing cold and wet. As soon as the weather improves in early 2020 we will be out there. In the
meantime we have time for more social events – darts, bingo, quizzes etc. This year saw us in Hastings, Clacton and Thorpe le Soken,
amongst others - with good weather and a lot of fun every time. Roll on 2020!! Come and join us.

U15 Wanderers U7 Wolves v U7 Eagles Mens Section
The U7 Wolves hosted the U7
Eagles in a thoroughly
enjoyable affair. Both teams
played fantastically well
cancelling each other out early
on in what was a very tight
game. Both teams played
superb with the tackles going in
well and the passing being
brilliant. Both teams were a
credit to the club and our
development. Well done!
A tricky fixture v Ongar for the
Wanderers today resulted in a
fantastic match. Following a
late pitch inspection the game
went ahead on a tricky surface.
An end to end first half ended 3-
4 with the visitors enjoying a
lead. Following the HT team
talk the boys competed and
ultimately dominated the 2nd
half to turn the game around,
coming out 7-4 winners!
Mixed results this weekend
with our Saturday side drawing,
First team suffering a loss and
our reserve team winning 3-0 v
our local friends, Woodham
Radars.
U14 Eagles v Concord Rangers - An early morning kick-off saw the Eagles away to Concord Rangers. Tricky conditions
welcomed both teams. The Eagles were slow to start but found their rhythm after the first 10. A lovely move involving 3
or 4 players was finished when James B played the ball through to Martin who placed it into the corner and the Eagles
took the lead 1-0. A few minutes later a well hit shot from James B was spilled by the Concord keeper and Jack was
quickest to respond putting the ball into the net to extend the lead to 2-0. Good defensive play by Aidan D, Harry, James
H and Freddie kept Concord away from goal. The teams went in at half time at 2-1. The second half resulted in a much
scrappier affair with the Eagles coming out on top. Final score 4-1 to the Eagles. Well done everyone, especially Freddie
who won MOTM!

PLAY CARD GAMES
WITH A DECK OF CARDS
Trash
Players: 2
Each player is dealt ten cards face down in two rows of
five, with the remainder of the deck face down between the
two players. The youngest player goes first, taking a card
from the deck. If it is any card from ace to 10, it is used
face-up to replace the face-down card in the corresponding
position. The player then looks at the replaced card and
places it in the corresponding spot, if possible. Kings are
wild and can be played in any spot.
The player's turn ends when a card is picked up that has
no place to go or when a jack or queen is drawn. At that
point, the player discards the card in his or her hand in the
"trash." The next player can "dig in the trash" (pick up the
discarded card) or draw. Play continues until one player
has replaced all face-down cards with face-up cards. That
is the end of round one.
For round two, the winning player uses only nine cards.
The winning player also goes first. The game ends when a
player gets down to one card and wins that round.
Stealing Bundles
Players: 2-4
Stealing Bundles sounds cool, and it lives up to its
promise. Two to four can play. Four cards are dealt, and
four are placed face up in the middle. The first player either
matches one of the cards in the middle, picking it up and
placing both cards face up in front of him or adds another
card face up in the middle. The next player has the same
options plus another option: he can steal the previous
player's stack, called a bundle, by matching the top card.
Play continues around the table with each player either
matching a middle card, playing a card in the middle, or
stealing a bundle. When a player runs out of cards, the
dealer gives him four more. If there are no more cards in
the middle, the dealer replenishes them. When the dealer's
stock is gone, the player with the most cards wins.
Snap
Players: 2-12
Snap is a game that rewards fast reactions. From two to 12
can play. Deal the whole deck of cards. Some players may
have an extra card. Players' cards are placed in a stack
face down. The player to the dealer's left turns over his first
card, starting a face-up pile. The next player turns up a
card. When two matching cards are turned up, the first
player to call "Snap" gets both face-up stacks, placing them
on the bottom of his face-down pile.
If there is a tie, the stacks are combined and placed in the
middle to form a Snap Pot. If a card is turned up that
matches the top card on the Snap Pot, the first to call
"Snap Pot" gets both stacks. The object is to win all the
cards. Calling "Snap" when there is no match costs a
player one card, given to the last player to reveal a card.
