THE ARTISTS OF GREAT BARDFIELD

In the early 1930s two young artists

cycled on hired bikes from the railway

station at Great Dunmow via Thaxted

to Great Bardfield in search of a

suitably isolated rural location in which

they could work. Those artists -

Edward Bawden and Eric Ravilious -

lighted upon Brick House in Great

Bardfield (left) and over the next three decades the property

became the centre of a flourishing artists’ colony which in due

course embraced more that half-a-dozen other properties in the

village.

Rothstein, Chapman, Clifford-Smith, Cruddas, Hoyle, Straub and

Aldridge were some of the names attracted to Great Bardfield,

their artistry spreading across a wide rangeof disciplines including

textiles, wallpaper design, ceramics, painting, drawing and

sculpture. The artists of Great Bardfield didn’t represent any

particular school of design: they seem to have been drawn

together simply by their love of the village and by their proximity

to others who were making a living in artistic circles.

The 1950s saw the acclaimed Open Home Exhibitions established

in Great Bardfield when many of the artists’ homes were open to

the public with their works for sale and when thousands of visitors

flocked to the village. Edward Bawden, with his commissions from

London Transport and Shell, was probably the most high profile

member of the group but other artists, often inspired by village

life and rural surroundings, have left a strong legacy with pieces to

be found today in the Victorian and Albert Museum, the National

Portrait Gallery, Tate Britain and the Imperial War Museum.

This legacy – as well as the lives of the artists drawn to Great

Bardfield - will be explored at the next meeting of the South

Woodham Ferrers Local History Society when Bruce Ronaldson a

practising artist, art historian and art class teacher will present his

illlustrated talk ‘The Artists of Great Bardfield’. This talk will take

place at 8.00 pm on Wednesday 6th November at Champions

Manor Hall, Hullbridge Road, CM3 5LJ. Visitors are welcome to

attend. Any enquiries please telephone 01245 321518

The Salvation Army

South Woodham Ferrers

We will remember them

Soon the Royal British Legion will be mustering rank and file to invite us to purchase what has become a symbol of love and

compassion, to assist its fine work among the casualties of armed conflict from previous and present engagements - the red poppy.

Those of us who have lost loved ones, whether it be in wars which our children are now learning as history, or in more recent

confrontation for truth and justice, Remembrance Day each year is a poignant occasion.

In South Woodham Ferrers, we have a fine tradition now, of the townspeople coming together on Remembrance Sunday, where

the young and veterans meet together with every age group in a service which honours and respects our armed forces; thankful

for our freedom, we bring before God those still in conflict and pray for those suffering from previous field operations.

The local Salvation Army is always represented at the town's service and privileged to lay a wreath along with other organisations.

The Tuesday nearest the Remembrance Day, our church family has a Remembrance Service at 2pm in the Evangelical Church,

Hullbridge Rd. This originally began when members were unable to attend the town's Royal British Legion service, but wanted to

mark the occasion. It is now open for anyone to attend who cannot be at the Sunday service in the Church of the Holy Trinity, (note

the change of venue) which this year is on the 10th November. Should there be anyone who has to miss that, or would like to share

with us, then you are welcome to come and share our smaller group's short service on the 12th November. (2pm to 3pm)

Whether we attend a service or not, let us remember to wear our poppy, and the cost of our freedom.

SOUTH WOODHAM FERRERS ROTARY CROCUS PLANTING FOR END POLIO CAMPAIGN

Recently a group of Rotarians from the South Woodham Club went back to

school at Trinity St. Marys.

The occasion was to help the Early Years Classes plant their crocus. The Club

supplied 86 children with a pot, compost and 7 crocus bulbs as part of the

Rotary ‘End Polio’ campaign. All the bulbs will flower purple, this is because

when a child overseas receives the vaccine developed to stop polio, their

little finger is dipped in purple dye to indicate they have been immunised.

Rotary with other Health Organisations have been involved in the project

since 1950 and is 99% on the way to eradicating polio globally. There have

been no new cases in Africa for over a year and the focus is now on achieving

similar result in India, Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Our thanks to the staff at the school who helped to make this possible, and

of course to the children who appeared to enjoy themselves whilst learning

about polio and planting their bulbs. I know the Rotarians also enjoyed

joining in.

LET’S PLAY

A GAME

Word Square Pen and

Paper Game

Two or more players

will enjoy this simple

yet challenging game.

Each player begins by

drawing a four space

by four space square

on a piece of paper

and hiding it from the

other player(s). The

players take turns

calling out a letter. As

each letter is called

out, players must write

the letter somewhere

on their grid.

The goal is to make as

many four-letter words

as possible. Called out

letters may be

repeated. When all of

the grids are full,

players disclose their

grids and count how

many four-letter words

they were able to

create vertically,

horizontally, and

diagonally.

The player with the

most wins the game.

REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY

Holy Trinity Church on Sunday 10th November, at 10.45am

In November every year poppy sellers will be seen throughout the country with their trays of poppies, for the 2 weeks prior

to Remembrance Sunday. We will be in the Asda foyer from Saturday 26th October until Saturday 9th November, with

poppies and other merchandise available. We would like to thank Asda for allowing us to collect in the foyer again, and

also the many businesses around the town who also support us.

It is 80 years this year since the start of World War II, and there are those who still remember the war and the effect it had

on their lives. 2019 has also seen the 75th Anniversary of D-Day and many of you will have seen the commemorative events

on the television. We are very proud that one of the members of our Branch is a D-Day Veteran.

Another area of conflict in World War II was the Far East, and the Battle of Kohima also took place in 1944. The Kohima

poem is recited at every Remembrance Service and says “When you go home, tell them of us and say, For your tomorrow

we gave our today”, and this is still relevant today.

We should never forget the sacrifices made by so many in two World Wars, and areas around the world where conflict still

exists.

The Poppy Appeal total for the year 1st October 2018 - 30th September 2019, stands at a magnificent £25,424.20, and we

would like to thank everyone for their generosity.

We hope you will continue to support the Poppy Appeal and thereby enable the Royal British Legion to continue their work

in helping our Armed Forces and Veterans who are in need.

Please Note: There is a change of Venue for the Remembrance Service this year. It will be held in Holy Trinity Church

on Sunday 10th November, starting at 10.45am

For Evermore Their

Names Will Live

For evermore their names will live

and timeless are the thanks we give

to those who gave us peace.

Remember those once close and gone,

remember, as our time moves on,

their sacrifice for us

and joys they never shared.

For evermore our debt will grow

and evermore our pledge must show

that we keep freedom safe.

Remember now their gift and say

“Remembered with true pride today”

for the all the peaceful years

in memory. Their memory.

Colin said, “having lived in Maldon

for over twelve years, I know how

frustrated people are by the

Conservative hegemony in the

district. I hope that I can offer

people a real alternative. In voting

for me, they know that I get things

done. In addition to founding the

Maldon Festival, I was a founding

member of the Friends of the

Moot Hall - serving as Vice Chair

for two years. I have led several

successful campaigns to improve

the lot of local residents and have

been campaigning for an Arts

Centre for Maldon for eleven

years. I hope shortly to be able to

make an announcement about a

positive outcome to this

campaign.

I am frustrated by the

complacency of local

Conservatives, who have done

nothing to address the many

problems facing local residents.

They still haven’t issued an Air

Quality Action Plan for Market Hill,

which should have happened

months ago. 40% of the UK’s

carbon emissions come from

surface transport. If we don’t act

to address the Climate Emergency

now by dealing with problems

such as that of Market Hill, latest

indications from the UN Climate

Change conference show that

large areas of the Maldon District

will be under water in a matter of

years. This includes the whole of

Burnham. Demand Better; vote for

a better future - vote Colin Baldy.”

‘Nipped’ narrow footway.

Is the Sainsbury’s roundabout safe?

In 2015 I made a detail review of the traffic flow and the road layouts

in the planning documents for the new Sainsburys site. At the

planning enquiry and subsequently I have been pointing out that

there were significant errors in the traffic monitoring and modelling

(e.g. peak hours 8:00 to 9:00, no pedestrians using the crossings) and

the deliberate design of narrow roads and footways needed to

squeeze the Sainsbury’s access road design into a space that was

never going to be big enough for current and future traffic on the

Burnham Road. All the comments, taken from the data contained in

the planning application, have been studiously ignored by the people

responsible for this design and it’s implementation.

I expect that many of you have now used the junction and now can

see the potential risks. Late design changes moved the Hullbridge

Road Zebra crossing north and the crossing stop line is less than 9

meters from the roundabout. A car driver has no time to see if there

are pedestrian’s waiting or crossing. A waiting bus (can be up to 12.5

m long) and a HGV (16.5 m) will ‘block back’ almost 6m into the

roundabout. I contacted the Director of Essex Highways who

allowed me to see Road Safety Audit 2 (RSA2) for the junction. I

pointed out that blocking back and a number of other issues had not

been assessed. I was advised they would be reviewed in RSA 3 and

4 but these documents would not be available for public comment.

I continue to be amazed how professionals employed to ensure that

the data is correct, designs meet all safety standards and

Chelmsford’s own core planning policies can continue to ignore these

significant issues.

The residents of South Woodham Ferrers and commuters from the

Dengie will now be forced to live with what is a potentially dangerous

design because ‘the developers have built now and it will be too

expensive to make changes ’.

The risk to pedestrians walking the 1/4mile from the new bus stop

to the health centre via the 1.15m ‘pinched’ footway outside Tabrums

can be seen in the photos. Vehicles are already striking the kerb

leaving rubber marks at this point. Pressure must be brought on

Sainsburys and the developers to provide a similar size roundabout

on the site so that the 36 and 94 bus can stop outside the Health

Centre and there will be no roads to cross rather than 3, but it will

cost money. The developers cannot expect us to believe the site

FOCUS

Lorry overlap on ‘nipped’ footway.

There are a couple of low cost changes that could be made to help

mitigate some of the risks;

• Paint over the lane markings the roundabout approaches. The

roads are not wide enough vehicles are seen to cut across the marked

lanes on entry and 2 cars cannot go side by side on the roundabout.

• Take the earth off the top of the roundabout so approaching traffic

can be seen.

• Reduce the Burnham road speed limit from 40mph to 30mph,

reducing the risk of truck roll over and cars mounting the kerb. It will

also eliminate all of the speed signs.

Just south of the crossing on Hullbridge Road its width has been

reduced from 5.4m to 5.1m. The design was been approved using

2.6m wide vehicle drawings. They did not include rear view door

mirrors or realise max width in the UK is 2.55m! The mirrors increase

the vehicle width by 0.2m per side. This would have needed a road

5.9m wide; there was space to do this.

There is a long-term solution for many of these risks; insist that a

northern by pass is built before any of the new development houses.

The east end of Burnham Road can then be blocked off, narrowed

and it could then become a 20mph green lane up to this roundabout.

ROTARY LEARNS OF THE CHARITY “STEAM TUG BRENT TRUST”

The Rotary Club of SWF enjoyed an interesting presentation by James Morgan of the Steam Tug

Brent Trust. www.steamtugbrent.org

Pictured left, James is being greeted by Rotary President Eric Johnson.

A great deal of work is being carried out by the Trust to revive marine history from World War II.

Due to enemy action throughout World War II, many boats and ships were sunk or destroyed by

hitting mines, being torpedoed or bombed by aircraft. Major ports and docks were important

targets and in London in particular they came under heavy and sustained attack.

As a result and with increasing Naval operations, by 1942 steam tugs were urgently needed for

War duties both in the U.K and overseas and the British Admiralty requested the construction of

a standard 'Utility' vessel, which could be built quickly and easily using revolutionary construction

methods of welded flat plate construction.

Known as 'TID's', 182 of these little prefabricated tugs were built in modular units, by several

different yards around the U.K. often by women workers. Brent started off as TID 159 and was

the very last of her class to be built being completed in 1946.

Brent is the last surviving steam vessel of the Port of London Authority's fleet and one of only three steam vessels left of many which

were once in used on the River Thames and in the London Docks' system.

She is one of only three steam 'TID' class tugs left in Britain, of 182 built. She is now one of only four of this class left in the U.K.

Saved from scrap in 1970, Brent was rescued and cared for by the Hall family of Maldon, Essex who used her as a holiday 'tug yacht' for

nearly 40 years until the need for major repairs caused her to be laid up. She was donated by the family to the Steam Tug Brent Trust a

registered charity in 2011 and can be seen at the Maldon Quay.

The charity is endeavouring amass funds to preserve the Tug Boat Brent and make the repairs that are now necessary and Rotary have

agreed to give a donation to the trust.

WINDLE COURT CARE HOME - MONTHLY TRIP TO CHELMSFORD MARKET

On Friday 18th of October we had a lovely day out at Chelmsford

Market. Everybody was looking forward to going and the weather

held out for us and turned out to be a really beautiful day. The

minibus arrived and getting on the bus everyone was excited

about what they were going to buy.

The Market is open most days of the week and there is literally

something for everyone. We wandered around every stall

(especially the wool stall) looking at what was on offer. Some of

the ladies purchased wool and knitting items, whilst others looked

at magazines, pickles and craft materials.

When everyone had seen all the stalls we decided to take a walk

into the shopping centre to have a look around and get something

to eat. We passed through all the undercover shops and we did

enjoy ourselves looking at the displays. On our way through the

second market outside we bumped into some old friends of one

of our residents. They were so pleased to see each other it was

lovely to see, and they told him how well he looked after all these

years.

One lovely resident had been collecting McDonalds vouchers so

that was where we decided to grab something to eat. I didn’t

honestly think everyone would enjoy hamburgers but they turned

out to be a winner with everyone. Time was pressing on now and

we wanted to take a look at the Meadow Croft garden centre on

the way home so we made our way back to the minibus. Just as

we were getting on the minibus it started to rain but fortunately

was only a shower.

We made our way back home and because of the rain, which was

heavier now we only stopped quickly at the garden centre.

Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the day, and although exhausted we

all returned safe and sound.

Moving the clocks back

Last weekend we put our watches and clocks back by an hour as did all other Europeans, but not everyone

throughout the world does this. It is a feature of countries further from the equator who have a wider

discrepancy between daylight hours and night-time hours.

It became quite widespread at the beginning of the last century as a device to save fuel which was needed

to keep industry working. In this century the arguments for and against the practice are fairly even.

But that extra hour. How did your pets cope with it? Did your dog want to go out for their morning exercise

an hour earlier? How did you use it? Did you grasp the chance to get an extra hour in bed? Did you just go

to bed later on Saturday evening? Whatever your answer you are the same you that got up on Sunday as went to bed on Saturday

and in one or two days time you and your pets will have settled into the new routine.

In the Book of Genesis in the Bible we learn the truths behind the world which God planned for, created and now watches over.

That tells us that ‘seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night will never cease’. God built the certainty

of them into His world. And they haven’t ceased. Yes there have been many times that the seedtime and harvest part of the

promise has been stretched but always it has returned. Occasionally the cold and heat part has come under scrutiny but they are

still part of the cycle of time. God’s creation never had the intent of being a blueprint of everything, every year, every person

being the same. William Cowper the poet born in the first half of the eighteenth century said that ‘variety was the spice of life’.

He recognised and welcomed the differences within God’s creation.

But those difference mean that we have choices to make. What to eat?, What to do? When to do it, Where to go? - the list is

endless. And one of the choices, the most important one that each of us has to make is whether we are going to recognise God

the Creator as our heavenly Father, which means recognising Jesus as his son who was born and then crucified to carry the

punishment for the sins of everyone including you, and the Holy Spirit as God being present in the world today. The permanence

and certainty of the Trinity of God is certainly not affected by any decisions of mankind to move the clocks back or forwards

NARCISSISM is on the rise. One study suggests that posting lots of selfies

makes you more narcissistic ... so, if this is true, we are already in the throes

of an epidemic.

We see signs of it on the world stage. Trump is a '10 out of 10 narcissist',

according to Larry Lindsey, the former Bush official, who attributes Trump's

alleged personality disorder to his childhood. According to a story in the

Indy, Lindsey says Trump's mother ignored him. Even if this story turns out

to be 'fake news', Trumps mother, had she lived, would certainly be

ignoring him now following his abandonment of the Kurds

Sean Coughlan writes for the BBC that "Narcissists might have

"grandiose" delusions about their own importance and an absence of

"shame" - but psychologists say they are also likely to be happier than

most people."

He goes on to explain: "An ongoing study of narcissism by researchers at

Queen's University Belfast has found such people might infuriate others

but are less likely to be stressed or depressed. Psychologist Dr Kostas

Papageorgiou says negative responses to narcissism can overlook the

positive benefits to the narcissists themselves. Researchers have been

trying to understand why narcissism appears to be "on the rise in modern

societies" - in politics, social media and celebrity culture - if it is also seen

as being "socially toxic". They define narcissists as being likely to "engage

in risky behaviour, hold an unrealistic superior view of themselves, are overconfident,

show little empathy for others, and have little shame or guilt".

With such negative qualities, the researchers wanted to know why

narcissism seemed to be so visible and often rewarded rather than

penalised."

SC explains that the upside is that "They have lower levels of stress and

are less likely to see life as stressful - with their self-confidence and

heightened sense of self-importance appearing to be "protective"

qualities. This follows the Belfast team's previous work, which indicated

narcissists were more likely to succeed in work and in their social lives."

In the past some have accused me of narcissistic traits - but this is palpably

untrue. Narcissism is a silly infatuation with oneself ... but, with me, it's the

real thing!

A dung beetle walks into a bar and says: "Is this stool taken?"

CAN OVER THE COUNTER MEDICINES HELP DEPRESSION? St John's

Wort is very popular in Germany where some claim it's as effective as

antidepressants while having milder side effects on the whole. As with

many other herbal remedies, however, there are some potential serious

side effects - and, even if there weren't, it's not recommended that you

self medicate if you are suffering from depression.

There is some news this week which may mean that, at some future date,

simple over-the-counter medication may be part of the armamentarium

with which we fight depression. Kaya Burgess writes in The Times: "Taking

two painkillers a day can reduce the symptoms of depression, a study has

suggested. The findings have prompted calls for trials on whether overthe-counter

pills could be prescribed for mental health disorders.

Scientists reviewed 26 previous studies to look at the effect of antiinflammatory

drugs, including ibuprofen and aspirin, on the symptoms of

“major depressive disorder”. These include low moods and the inability to

feel pleasure.

Researchers from the University of Science and Technology in Wuhan,

China, found that the drugs were 79 per cent more effective at eliminating

symptoms and 52 per cent more effective at reducing their overall severity

than a placebo."

Jane Kirby takes up the story in The Independent: ""Common painkillers,

statins and fish oils may help curb depression, especially if taken with

antidepressants, experts say. A new review found that anti-inflammatory

agents, including painkillers such as ibuprofen and aspirin, as well as statins

and omega-3 fish oils, could curb major symptoms of depression such as

low mood."

She goes on to point out that: "Experts from the University of Science and

Technology in Wuhan, China, reviewed 26 existing studies for their

research in the Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Psychiatry."

When these journalists say "pain killers" they seemingly DON'T mean

paracetamol and the like ... but rather the anti-inflammatory drugs

(examples of which are listed below.) Jane expands on the theme as

follows: "The anti-inflammatories included in the studies were nonsteroidal

anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen and aspirin;

omega 3 fatty acids often found in fish oils; cytokine inhibitors; statins;

steroids; antibiotics; a drug used to treat sleep disorders (modafinil); and

N-acetyl cysteine, which is used to loosen excess phlegm in people with

cystic fibrosis and chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD). The

results suggested that, overall, these medicines and agents were 52 per

cent more effective than placebo at reducing overall symptoms of

depression and were 79 per cent more effective in eliminating symptoms

than placebo. The most effective drugs were found to be NSAIDs, omega

3 fatty acids, statins and minocyclines, and the effect was greater if these

were added to antidepressants."

So where does this leave us? In the past an association between

inflammation and depressive symptoms has been postulated - and there

has been talk of 'an overactive immune system' playing a part. For

example, we give people a vaccination to boost their immune system and

they may find their mood dips for a short time afterwards.

As ever, this is not as straightforward as it seems. Chronic pain can itself

result in depression ... and, whilst NSAIDS may improve your mood, those

who take large quantities of opioids in an attempt to deal with their pain

often face the additional burden of depression.

Anti-inflammatories (NSAIDs) have well known side-effects - such as

irritation of the stomach lining and, sometimes bleeding. The group of antidepressants

known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) have

also been associated with upper gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding (perhaps

due to depletion of serotonin from platelets) ... and, although some say

this is a relatively rare event, given that one recommendation seems to be

to combine NSAIDs with anti-depressants (such as the commonly used

SSRIs) the poor old stomach could have to contend with a double whammy.

Does this mean that GPs would have to prescribe a third drug to protect

the stomach in order to counteract this potential problem?

All in all, then, these are interesting results ... but further trials will be

needed before your friendly doc will feel easy about prescribing on the

basis of this evidence alone.

FACT: if somebody is playing Christmas music in October you are legally

allowed to kill them and use their corpse for a Halloween decoration.

COMING OFF ANTIDEPRESSANTS: 'Pulse' newspaper reports that:

"NICE has revised its depression guidelines to warn of 'severe' and lengthy

antidepressant withdrawal symptoms, having originally said such symptoms

were 'mild'.

The updated guidance on treating depression in adults now includes

statements on withdrawal symptoms, clarifying that symptoms may be

severe and last for months in some patients. This is a revision of the original

guidance, which advised that symptoms are generally mild and self-limiting

over the course of a week."

My experience is that many patients find coming off antidepressants 'not

too bad' providing they do it under supervision - very slowly over a fairly

protracted period of time. There are some, however, who have much more

difficulty and need more support. One common problem is that withdrawal

effects may be mistaken for a return of depressive symptoms ... causing

those affected to give up and 'go back on' their antidepressants.

"My Dad’s a Foster parent, whereas my mother has always preferred

Carlsberg." Clive Anderson.

NEW ALZHEIMER'S DRUG. The NHS tells us that: "There is at present no

cure for dementia. But there are medicines and other treatments that can

help with dementia symptoms."

Because there's no cure, this is fertile ground for the snake oil salesmen.

We see ads like: 'The Best Alzheimer's Treatment? - Over 95% Say 'It's

Aloadofoldcrap!' This is the "Clinically Proven Natural Treatment" that

Protects Against Alzheimer's.'

At last, though, there is hope of a significant advance. BBC News reports

that: "Scientists believe they could be on the cusp of a breakthrough, after

a drugs company said it had the first treatment of its kind for Alzheimer's.

The drug, which is called aducanumab, cannot cure it but Biogen says it

slows down the rate at which it progresses, essentially meaning people

stay more like themselves for longer. This came as a surprise as the

company had suspended the drug trial in March 2019 because of

disappointing results. But now a larger dataset has been analysed and

Biogen says it shows that higher doses of aducanumab can provide a

significant benefit to patients with early Alzheimer's."

It is thought to act on the plaques that form in the brain in this condition.

There are some benefits in memory - as well as language and living skills.

When you look at the history of Alzheimer’s research, the pathway to this

point is littered with failures - so it doesn't do to get over excited. If this

drug turns out to be half as good as it's cracked up to be, however, it could

represent the first step in the long climb towards a cure for this condition.

The Guardian reported August that "Dementia is the biggest health crisis

of our time, as statistics show the condition was the primary cause of death

in England and Wales last year. Almost one in eight people died from

dementia and Alzheimer’s disease in 2018, with the proportion increasing

for the fourth consecutive year."

WOODVILLE PRIMARY SCHOOL 3PR

LAUNCH AND UPDATE

On Wednesday 2nd

October 2019 a little green

robot called 3PR landed at

Woodville Primary School in

South Woodham Ferrers.

His mission? To eliminate

dangerous parking – and

pupils, parents, teachers

and neighbours are all

helping him to do it.

3PR represents the ‘Three Parking Rules’ to remember when travelling

to school: Care, Consideration and Caution and these are the key

principles of the school parking scheme created by the South East

Parking Partnership (SEPP).

Emblazoned on posters , stickers and banners, the bright cartoon

delivers a positive message about school parking to children, parents,

teachers and local residents alike. Leaflets about considerate parking

are given to pupils and a ‘3PR’ Zone’ is created around the school,

which parents should avoid entering by car.

Every school child who enters the zone by foot, bike or scooter receives

a 3PR token to take to their classroom. Each week or month, the class

with the most tokens is awarded a cup.

The launch was attended by Local Councillors Keith Bentley and Patricia

Hughes, Leah Martin (School parking liaison officer), Miss Phillips

(headteacher) and Mrs Bowyer (deputy headteacher). Five of the pupils

took on the role of 3PR patrollers and gave out the tokens.

Miss Phillips has said that “The school has continued to promote 3PR

and the parents, staff and pupils have been very supportive of the

initiative. It is starting to make a difference parents/carers are no longer

parking directly outside the front of the school”.

CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY WELCOMES WILLIAM DE FERRERS SCHOOL

On Wednesday 16 September a group of year 12 students from William

de Ferrers school had the opportunity to visit Cambridge University.

The taster day was highly successful in giving students the strong

message that universities like Cambridge are open to them if they are

willing to work hard at their studies, prepare their applications

thoughtfully, and demonstrate their passion for the subjects they wish to

study.

Headteacher Mr Mike Applewhite who accompanied the students on the

visit said ‘it was wonderful to see how enthusiastic the students were at

the prospect of university and their eagerness to discuss their preparation

and plans’.

SOUTH WOODHAM FERRERS V STOWMARKET - 26TH OCTOBER 2019

South Woodham Ferrers made it two in a row when they beat a

strong and well organised Stowmarket team in their London 2

North East clash. The wet and windy conditions were never going

to be help the teams produce their best, but both sides gave it

their all. Woodham took their chances well and took advantage of

the better conditions in the first 20 minutes to run out 20 to 7

winners.

From the kick-off Woodham made the best of the slightly better

conditions putting together a series of promising attacks to pile

pressure on the visitors. That pressure was to pay off when scrum

half Kieran Ballinger broke through a gap in the stretched defence

and raced for the line. Only a last-ditch tackle prevented him from

scoring but he was able to off load the ball to a flying Sevie Hurrell

who went over the line to score. Alex Baker converted.

More pressure from the home side paid off with a series of visits

deep into the Stowmarket 22 as the Woodham pack took control.

The pressure appeared to rattle the visitors as they fought to keep

Woodham out. A yellow card a high tackle was to prove to be the

defining moment of the game and Woodham took full advantage

of the extra man.

For the ten minutes of the sin bin Woodham piled on the gas and

hammered at the Stowmarket defence. They were rewarded with

a try for Kieran Ballinger, again converted and then a penalty taken

by Alex Baker. The ten points were decisive as the weather was

about to play its part.

Heavy rain made it difficult for both sides to play with any freedom

and it seemed that the only way forward was to keep it tight and

carry. Back to the full fifteen, Stowmarket seemed to cope better

with the conditions and enjoyed a period of ascendancy. Some

great defending and some handling errors saw opportunities go

begging and Woodham used to strong wind to clear their lines.

The visitors got their only score of the day when after being

camped in the Woodham 22 they finally manged to get the ball

over the whitewash for a try.

Halftime came with rain coming down in buckets but with the

home side on top, leading 17 points to 7.

The second half was no classic; possession ebbed and flowed

between the two sides and time after time attacks were snuffed

out by handling errors or silly infringements. Some of the illdiscipline

of earlier games crept back into Woodhams play and the

referee punished them with the sin binning of Sevie Hurrell.

Stowmarket probably had the better chances but could never quite

break the defence. Woodham always looked dangerous when they

got the ball in hand and were rewarded with the only score of the

half when a promising attack was halted by a Stowmarket

infringement. Alex Baker slotted the resulting penalty to end the

day with a ten-point haul.

Woodham will be pleased with the points and given the conditions

played well enough to deserve them.

BURNHAM TABLE TENNIS LEAGUE

STUNNING DEBUT BY 13 YEAR OLD JENSON DAVIS THIS WEEK FOR WOODHAM D TEAM.

Stow A’s Gary Brignall versus Woodham A’s Lee

McHugh – Division 1 action this week.

Div 1 – Fambridge on Fire

The Stow A & B teams are struggling to

get their campaigns off the ground this

season – rooted in the bottom two

places both the A and B teams

succumbed to 4-6 defeats this week,

The B team fell foul of an in form Dick

Wyman for West Maldon B who was

unbeaten and largely untroubled in

singles and doubles throughout the

match. The Stow A team hosted the

Woodham A team and went down to the

Division 3 debutant and hat-trick earner – 13 year old

Jenson Davis.

same scoreline but had to concede one game and give up another

due to injury so perhaps they feel hard done by. For Woodham

Lee McHugh and Tony Bonnici both hit doubles. In the all

Mapledene clash the A team brought in some of their big guns and

to good effect as former Open Singles Champion Reece Seddon

took his hat-trick in style and partnered up with Steve Muth for the

doubles to lead the A team to a close 6-4 victory. For the B team

the result of the night has to go to Anthon Ranjit-Singh with a

tremendous 4 set win over Babul McLeod. Despite being a man

short Cold Norton A were able to hold onto a 5-5 draw away at

Maldon A – and of course they had Big Duncan Taylor to thank for

this with 4/4 wins on the night. So all very close in Division 1 this

week, until that is the final scorecard trickles in to reveal the

Fambridge demolished Cold Norton B with a 10-0 score.

Admittedly Cold Norton were a man down, but they were up

against a Fambridge trio of Liam Squirrell, Mark Stones, and Keith

Adams – with Squirrell picking up the player of the match award

as he didn’t drop a set in both his singles matches.

Div 2 – Youth is no Match for Experience

Woodham B just about cling onto top spot in Division 2 despite an

8-2 battering at the hands of Mayland A. Woodham were slightly

miffed when they turned up for the match to find Mayland were

fully staffed – how dare they play with a full complement of players.

Well if this continues expect Mayland to be right up at the top of

the league fighting it out with Maldon teams. Woodham fielded

two 13 year olds and they competed very well but the wily

Mayland trio had enough nous to overcome the exuberance of

youth. Hat-tricks for both Capt Colin Barrell and tricky server

Ralph Gibson sealed the deal, but it was modern defender Steve

Aspland who caught the eye in the best 3 match ups of the night

as he defended and defended as player after player came at him

with a variety of styles and hitting – a truly phenomenal evenings

work by the Mayland maestro. It was a bad week for the

Mayland A’s Steve Aspland – the hardest working player

of the week.

Woodham teams as their C team also took a

hammering, this time from the improving

Mapledene C team where Bill Smith led his

team to a 10-0 drubbing and also picked up

the player of the match award. Woodham

thought they were in with a chance when the

doubles teams were announced and

Mapledene offered up ‘Bill & Ben’ – but alas

it was no child’s play and they duly lost that

one too. For the rematch Woodham are

expecting Mapledene to field a team of ‘Mary,

Mungo & Midge’. The impressive top two

teams from Maldon also had decisive wins to keep their promotion

hopes on track. Maldon B demolished the C team from Cold

Norton 9-1 with Maldon’s unbeaten Steve Scholz still going strong.

The Maldon C team fielded their new signing Mark Shorney and

he didn’t disappoint as he raked up a strong treble in the singles.

He must have been disappointed to not be selected for the

doubles as his team-mates didn’t read the script and duly lost. The

final match of the week saw Stow C’s Tim Pulham win all 4 of his

matches without dropping a set, but result of the night must go to

the hard working back from injury Shirley Carroll who defeated

both Martin Knights and Rod Maclennan to help her Maldon D side

pick up the 5 points required for the draw.

Div 3 – Stow Stow Away We Go

The lovable Dave Goody was in fine form in leading his seemingly

unstoppable Stow D side – a 10-0 hammering of St Lawrence B

cements the Stow team’s stranglehold of this division. They now

have clear daylight between them and the peloton being led by

Maldon E. Peter Chastin has been ever-present and has made a

considerable impact for the team with 14/15 wins so far. Maldon

E were able to defeat close rivals West Maldon D 7-3 to keep

themselves securely in second place, albeit some way behind the

Stowball running away in first place. Woodham D are way behind

on matches so they may yet still have a say in proceedings –

especially if they keep turning up youngsters of quality. This week

was the turn of hard hitting debutant Jenson Davis with a

phenomenal hat-trick of 3-0 wins for his first, certainly not his last,

player of the match award. Jenson’s toils were back up by his

team-mates as they secured a morale boosting 8-2 win over Stow

F. Michael Pratley continues to bolster his Burnham A team – this

week he earned yet another hat-trick and teamed up with Terry

Frost to win the doubles against St Lawrence A – but even this was

not enough to thwart a determined St Lawrence trio who took all

the remaining singles for a 6-4 win.
