Name a Christmas Star
By public request, Paul J King
Funeral Directors are once
again offering the bereaved
the chance to ‘Name a
Christmas Star’ in memory of
a loved one. All donations
will go to Mr Gee’s
Foundation in recognition of
the wonderful work they do
in the town.
Stars will be hung in our
windows in Guild Way,
reminding everyone that
there are some very special
people to be remembered at
this time of year and for
some, this will be their first
Christmas without that
special person.
Staff at Paul King’s realise
that Christmas can be a
difficult time for those who
have lost a loved one, and
know from previous years,
that remembering them in
this way can bring some
comfort.
All we ask is for a minimum
donation of £1 with all
proceeds going to Mr Gee’s
Foundation.
If you would like to Name a

MISTER GEES FOUNDATION
REGISTERED CHARITY NO. 1181204
As we approach the holiday season on behalf of everybody at
Mister Gees Foundation charity shop may I take this opportunity
to wish you all a Very Blessed Christmas and a Happy New Year.
Having completed another twelve months of trading, unlike the
limited “festive period for giving”, here in the village it has lasted
throughout; for this we can only say thank you. In return the staff
have sorted, priced and sold your donations enabling the shop to
contribute one hundred and twenty thousand pounds to the
registered charity since December last year. Not less than half that
sum has been earmarked for good causes here in South Woodham
Ferrers and to date used by such diverse groups as flower
arrangers, park runners, local pre-schools and girl guides, not to
mention the defibrillator on the station and seating on the sea wall.
Sixteen scholarships, each worth five thousand pounds have also
been funded by the shop since opening in November 2017. These
have made it possible for students that otherwise might not have
been able to afford a master’s degree in sustainable farming,
sustainable fishing and water management at UK universities. The
expertise gained by these individuals will be indispensable in a
world affected by climate change and with a growing population
that will need food and water.
Once again many thanks for your continuing support and can I
remind you that the shop opening hours over the festive period
will be as shown below.

Broomfield Hospital’s Tabitha Stuthridge has been crowned Midwife of the Year at the national
Butterfly Awards.
The awards, which took place at Chesford Grange Hotel in Warwick, recognise the work of medical
professionals, carers and volunteers who support those who have experienced baby loss.
Tabitha runs Broomfield Hospital’s Blossom suite and has been praised for the exceptional round-theclock
care she offers families.
Mum Stacey Alliston, who nominated Tabitha, described her as an ‘Earth angel’.
It is Tabitha’s second award in a
month after she won the
improving patient experience
category at Mid Essex
Hospitals’ Outstanding Care
and Service Awards.
“The award ceremony was
beautiful and I was surprised I
won,” said Tabitha, who joined
the Trust eighteen months ago.
“I wasn’t prepared for it
because there were so many
wonderful people there.
Everyone there deserved to
win.
MIDWIFE TABITHA WINS NATIONAL BUTTERFLY AWARD
CHRISTMAS JUMPER SUNDAY
Sunday 22nd December 2pm @ Club Woodham
“It was such an honour to meet
so many inspirational people
and hear their stories. People
don’t tend to think about this
side of midwifery and the fact
anyone even thought to
nominate me is really lovely.
“It’s really nice to know that the
work I’ve done here has made
a difference to people, because
that’s why I do it. I hope this
helps to raise awareness about
baby loss.”
Everybody welcome, have you got what it takes to
show us your Christmas Jumper?
Come and join in the fun and a chance to win in
our Christmas Hamper raffle!
Live Music from Monkeys Wedding
Ros Bullen-Bell, head of
midwifery and gynaecology at
Mid Essex Hospitals, said:
“Congratulations to Tabitha,
it’s very well-deserved. She’s an
outstanding midwife who’s so
passionate and committed to
all the women and families she
looks after. What she has done
for bereavement services here
is just unbelievable.
“We didn’t have a
bereavement midwife before
Tabitha, and when she came in,
she wanted to make a
difference. The time and
energy she has for staff as well
as the women she cares for is
exceptional.”

BIKERS BRING CHRISTMAS CHEER TO
CHILDREN AT BROOMFIELD HOSPITAL
OVER 170 SCHOOL CHILDREN
ATTEND THE DISCOVERY FESTIVAL
The annual Discovery
Festival returned to
Chelmsford for its
seventh year to
support the United Nation’s International Day of Persons with
Disabilities (IDPwD).
Motorcyclists dressed as Father Christmas, elves and reindeer
roared into Broomfield Hospital to spread festive cheer and donate
presents to young patients on Phoenix children’s ward.
The Dengie and South Essex Bikers came bearing gifts with a super
sleigh-full of toys, books, games and DVDs for children of all ages.
The group set off from the Cabin tea rooms in Burnham before
dropping in to Morrison’s in Maldon who generously donated toys
and treated the bikers to free tea and coffee. From there bikers
brought some seasonal noise and colour to Maldon High Street
before heading to Broomfield.
The festive toy run is in its second year and was the idea of the
group’s leader Steve Maples.
Steve, from Burnham-on-Crouch, began fundraising for Mid Essex
Hospitals Charity after he and partner Leanne tragically lost their
baby daughter, Paige. This year the couple are celebrating a new
arrival as just two weeks ago Leanne gave birth to a baby boy,
Rhys, at Broomfield.
Steve said: “We had a really good turn-out again and we brought
even more toys with us this year. I’d like to thank everyone who
donated toys, from our group members, to people who contacted
us through our Facebook page and also Morrison’s.
“We really wanted to do something for the children and we’ve
even bought nappies for babies on the post-natal ward. It’s been
a really good day and we’re planning on something even bigger
next year.”
The Discovery Festival was held across two days at Chelmsford
Museum on Monday 2 December and Tuesday 3 December,
welcoming students from Columbus School and College, Our Lady
Immaculate, Southview and Thriftwood schools to take part in
several interactive activity sessions.
These sessions aimed to promote a positive image of people with
disabilities, celebrating their achievements, increasing
understanding of disability and promote inclusivity. Sessions
included Simulation Specs from Support 4 Sight, boccia from Sport
for Confidence, table cricket provided by Essex County Cricket
and communication equipment and a sensory tent from Inclusive
Communication Essex. Ace Music Therapy provided fun music
sessions and the Mushroom Theatre Company provided an
inclusive theatre workshop.
Event organiser, Ryan Mitchell from Chelmsford City Events said:
“This year’s Discovery Festival focused on the younger generation
and was a great opportunity for some of the younger residents of
Chelmsford to come together and learn about those who live with
disabilities.
“The event also highlights the great work that goes on across
Chelmsford and between partner agencies to help those living with
a disability and their families and carers. Thank you to all the
schools for attending and to the organisations for their fantastic
support in providing the activities that made the event possible.”
To keep up-to-date with the ways in which Chelmsford’s local
community are working towards a fully inclusive society, follow
@DiscoverAbilityChelmsford on Facebook.
Charlotte Jefcoate, fundraising
coordinator for Mid Essex
Hospitals Charity, said: “We’re
really grateful to Steve and all
the bikers for supporting the
hospital. Having the bikes lined
up outside the atrium was
amazing and the children were
so excited to see them. It was
certainly a bit different to see
Santa’s sleigh being pulled by a
motorcycle rather than a
reindeer!
“Donations like these make
such a difference to the
children who are in hospital
over Christmas. The staff on
Phoenix do a wonderful job in
decorating the ward and
making it feel Christmassy and
being able to give the children
presents to open over the
festive season always puts
smiles on faces.

The Source and Summit of the Christian Faith
In a few weeks’ time the Catholic Church will experience a biannual phenomenon! As at Easter, the Christmas
Eve and Christmas Day Masses are likely to be full to capacity. There will be some non-Catholics and visitors
in the congregation, there will be those who go to Mass every week come rain or shine, but there will also
be many Catholics who only come to Mass on this great Feast and sadly will not be seen again until they
attend Mass on the even bigger Feast of Easter.
The Catholic Church describes the Mass as “THE SOURCE AND SUMMIT OF THE CHRISTIAN FAITH” and
for the benefit of its members places a grave obligation on them to attend Mass every Sunday, unless they
have a grave reason why they cannot come, eg, frailty of age or sickness, impossible distance, treacherous
weather, an unavoidable and essential duty to care for someone. Making the effort to come to Sunday Mass, or a Saturday Vigil
Mass, begins our fulfilment of keeping the first and third of the Ten Commandments, ie, to love God with all our heart, mind,
body and soul, which is true worship, and then to keep the Sabbath Day holy. Attending weekly Mass continuously reminds us
that although we are sinners, for we do not always love God or our neighbour as much as we should or could, God never stops
loving us. The Mass is proof of God’s unconditional, enduring, perfect love because it makes present, again and again, that same,
definitive act of perfect love made by His Son, Jesus Christ, on the Cross of Calvary. There, He freely sacrificed His life for our
sakes, knowing full well we could never fully understand such extravagant love, never to love Him back in the same measure and
never be able to thank Him adequately.
In sacrificing a few minutes of our time by coming to weekly Mass, we enjoy the privilege of standing at the foot of the Cross to
hear, in our hearts, what Jesus Christ, in His dying breath, said to each one of us, “l LOVE YOU”. In the presence of Love Himself
we receive that necessary help to love others as He loves them, with patience, forgiveness and with all our heart. Coming to
weekly Mass measures and demonstrates the level of our maturity, of which one hallmark is the ability and willingness to
acknowledge what others have done for us and to recognise the need to say, “thank you”. Every Mass celebrates not just the
Sacrifice of Jesus on the Cross but also His Resurrection. By coming to Mass, we are also privileged to be in the company of the
Risen Christ Who now comforts us with the sure hope that we and our loved ones, if we want it, will share in that same victory
over death one day.
It is good to see so many “twice-a-year” faces at the Christmas Masses, but do not miss out on what Mass, every Sunday, offers us.
Wishing you all a very holy Christmas and a peaceful New Year.

We had decided to have a new Bathroom and always like to use
local people. Our friends had contacted JMB Plumbing for some
work to be done and recommended them. Then James came into
our life. From his arrival he was polite and full of enthusiasm and
asked if he should take of his working shoes at the door which I
appreciated very much. He had lots of good ideas and after
measuring and showing us a brochure which was also from a local
Supplier to supply all the fittings promised us a quote. We
received this later that evening. The original quote was more than
our budget but he worked with us to reduce the price without
losing out on quality or workmanship.
We now have a beautiful bathroom with a walk in shower and
modern units. He fitted a new ceiling with spotlights and to
conceal all the pipes a new floor with all the pipes hidden away.
Of course we had a weeks upheaval and some mess but he was a
clean and tidy worker and was prepared to work at the weekends
which is unusual and helpful to us. He had an excellent team of
specialist workers for different jobs.

ON GARDENING
HERBS
The dormant period of winter is the ideal time to plan an herb
garden. Preferably somewhere warm! Most herbs should be
planted in a sunny, south-facing position and with some protection
from north and east winds. A south-sloping plot of ground is ideal.
The taller, sun-loving herbs can be planted at the back, and the
smaller herbs, which do best in a moist soil, can be planted at the
bottom of the slope.
larger garden a round bed may be marked out in wedge-shaped
segments, each for a different herb.
Where space permits, an attractive herb garden may be planned
as a chess-board, each square containing one species. Alternate
the patches with equal-sized squares either paved or filled with
gravel or granite chippings.
Elizabethan knot garden
More complicated designs, such as an imitation of the Elizabethan
knot garden, must be carefully drawn up on paper. The pattern of
the design is formed by planting in individual beds herbs whose
leaf textures or colours contrast with those of the next bed. Each
bed or shape may be outlined by box or violets.
When you have decided on the shape and size of the herb garden,
it’s then time to order your seeds in readiness for sowing in the
spring. Herbs that are grown from seed are the most economical
way to stock your herb garden. Apart from their uses in cooking,
most herbs are also highly decorative and absolutely vital for
attracting wild life into the garden. They will flourish in small
patches of ground, preferably near the kitchen; or they can be
grown more formally in an herb garden laid out to a pattern.
Planning herb borders
Small herb borders, sufficient to provide flavouring, may be treated
as an integral part of the vegetable garden. On a larger scale the
herb border can virtually be an herbaceous border and may include
many perennial herbs. An herbaceous herb garden needs careful
planning, to give the most pleasing effect to the eye, and a natural
or contrasting grouping of plants.
A small collection of herbs can be based on an old cartwheel laid
on the ground; each segment is planted with a different herb. In a
Personally, I had great success with planting an edging to an island
bed in my own garden using oregano and allowing it to flower
before cutting for the kitchen (the flowers are edible too). All
summer long the oregano flowers were smothered in bees of
different species.
I look forward to sharing the forth coming, gardening year with
Focus readers once again.

What’s in my cat’s
vaccination?
Ever wondered what exactly is in that booster? Listed
below are the diseases most commonly covered amongst
vaccination programmes developed for cats:
• Feline panleucopenia virus – This virus is highly
contagious and often fatal. It attacks the bone marrow
and lymphoid tissues which are responsible for
producing important blood cells and maintaining the
immune system. The virus also attacks the lining of the
intestines and can also affect the brain and eyes in very
young cats. Infected pregnant cats can give birth to
kittens with underdeveloped brains or even have
stillbirths. Many cats show no signs of the disease at all
and can die very suddenly; others will suffer from
vomiting, diarrhoea, neurological deficits and severe
dehydration.
• Feline herpesvirus (feline viral rhinotracheitis) – Cats can
get infected by herpesvirus, calicivirus (mentioned
below) or both of these viruses at the same time, causing
what is known as Feline Respiratory Disease Complex.
Signs typically include sneezing, inflammation around
the eyes (conjunctivitis), inflammation of the linings of
the nose, fever and thick nasal discharge. Some cats go
on to develop painful sores inside their mouth which will
make it hard to eat. As with herpesvirus in humans, once
contracted, your cat will have it for life, and will get
flare-ups in times of stress.
• Feline calicivirus – As with herpesvirus, feline calicivirus
also attacks the mouth and lungs. Some strains of the
virus can even cause fluid build-up within the lungs
which can progress to pneumonia. Antibiotics may be
prescribed to help combat any secondary bacterial
infection that has occurred but they cannot kill the virus
itself.
• Feline leukaemia virus (FeLV) – This virus is transmitted
through saliva and urine, so spreads easily between cats,
especially if they spend time outdoors or if they ever
fight another cat. It also spreads from an infected
mother to her kittens through her womb and her milk.
FeLV can predispose a cat to many different issues
including anaemia, neurological signs (such as blindness),
immune system problems and cancer.
The above diseases can be very nasty and cause severe
symptoms including death. There are very few drugs
available for treatment of viral disease, meaning much of
the treatment is supportive only. Thankfully, these diseases
are becoming rarer because of vaccination. To find out
more information about these diseases and hear about our
yearly vaccination plan (Fit Friends), please call the clinic
on 01245 324437.

PREVENTING HOMELESSNESS V SUPPORTING THE HOMELESS
Going by the old adage, ‘Prevention is better than cure’, we at
Housing Dilemmas CIC, work proactively to prevent another case
of eviction or homelessness than allow a tenancy to be lost and
then react to resolve it. Once a tenancy is lost and the household
is made homeless, it becomes a lot more difficult to house the
individual or household. Secondly, the repercussions of
homelessness can be devasting, as it often leads to other socioeconomic
adversities, which affect both the individuals and the
community as a whole.
Homelessness can lead to unemployment, drug and alcohol
abuse, rough sleeping, crime, lack of self-esteem, abject poverty,
social exclusion, isolation, loneliness, depression, mental health,
chronic health issues, malnutrition, vulnerability and the list goes
on. Areas that are prevalent with homelessness and rough
sleeping also affect businesses and property values as
entrepreneurs and home buyers tend to look elsewhere; where
their investments will yield good returns.
Most individuals and households facing homelessness would
prefer help to come to them in time to prevent the eviction.
Offering homeless individuals, blankets, duvets, hot meals and
sleeping bags are very charitable and as such applaudable, but
do they resolve any of the above socio-economic impacts?
Everyone needs a roof over their head. Sleeping outside at
shopfronts, train stations, in sheds, under bridges and on the
streets are no options regardless of whether it is wet, dry, warm
or cold.
With Christmas fast approaching, many will give handouts to
support the homeless; some will offer them a warm place for a
night or 2 and cook them a festive meal, which is all good in light
of the festive season; but what happens after Christmas, when the
season of giving and loving is over?
If you would rather see another potential eviction prevented and
homelessness eventually become a thing of the past, then support
Housing Dilemmas CIC to do just that with a gift that goes beyond
Christmas www.housingdilemmas.org.uk/donate.
We are based in Chelmsford and offer a FREE a proactive
community outreach service to all to ensure that tenancies are
sustained, backed with a comprehensive tenancy sustainment
training programme.
Our employment search support services are designed to help
individuals find work and get back on their feet.
We are also currently working actively to offer supported housing
accommodations to single homeless individuals. To find out more

EXERCISE BENEFITS FOR WOMEN: Women with a greater
exercise capacity on a heart stress test have a lower risk of dying
from heart disease and other conditions. Heathline reports on a
study which "found poor exercisers were twice as likely to die from
cancer and more than four times as likely to die from other causes,
compared to women on a higher fitness level."
It goes on to report: "HIIT (high intensity interval training ) can be
one way to help your heart even if you don’t have much time to
work out. Women who can exercise at a higher intensity during a
heart stress test are less likely to die from heart disease, cancer,
and other causes, say the authors of a new study."
Scotty Butcher, PhD, an associate professor of physical therapy at
the University of Saskatchewan in Canada, said these findings are
“right in line” with other research looking at the impact of fitness
level on the risk of dying from these kinds of conditions.
Healthline concludes: "It’s no surprise that exercise is good for your
health, but does the new study mean that all women should take
up more vigorous exercise like running, swimming laps, or
kickboxing? Not necessarily. There are many ways to increase your
fitness level. Still, for some women, higher-intensity workouts can
be a great option."
The bottom line is that all exercise is good for you - indeed walking
has been praised to the rafters because it confers numerous
benefits - but it's looking as if, the more you do (within reason) the
greater the beneficial effects.
VAPING AND DEPRESSION: JAMA, the respected peer reviewed
journal, has come up with a possible link. Healthline reports that,
in the study, researchers asked the participants about their use of
e-cigarettes and their history of depression. "When the researchers
analyzed the data, they found that people who vaped — both
current and former — were more likely to report a history of
depression. But it wasn’t clear from the study if vaping was
responsible for the participants’ depression or the other way
around, the authors state. People with existing depression could
be vaping because they’re depressed."
NEWS FOR SMOKERS AND VAPERS. It's time to start planning
your New Year's resolutions. Giving up smoking is the best thing
you can do to improve your health and longevity ... with the
possible exception of stopping bull riding or playing Russian
roulette. A recent report underlined the point that just a few
cigarettes a day worsens lung health. The NHS website
commented that this adds "to the weight of evidence that shows
that any level of tobacco smoking is harmful and that the best way
to protect lung health – and health more generally – is to stop
smoking altogether."
Vaping has been hailed as a new way of cutting down and stopping
- but, as you know, it's under a bit of a cloud. There have been
deaths and reports of severe lung damage ... but this seems to
principally involve people who use DIY cocktails rather than
approved products.
Public Health England still advises that vaping is MUCH safer than
smoking. However, as the NHS points out, e-cigarettes have only
been available for a relatively short time, so there is still uncertainty
over their potential health effects, particularly with long-term use.
Recently there was a worrying headline in The Sun: "E-cigarette
smoke could cause lung cancer – despite being tobacco-free,
experts warn." The NHS website points out, however, that: "The
Sun's headline does not mention that this was based on a study
using mice and the findings cannot be automatically applied to
humans."
The NHS website concludes that, although Public Health England
is probably right to recomend vaping as a much less damaging
alternative to smoking, we are not yet certain that e-cigarettes are
completely "safe". The advice given is as follows: "One way to
reduce any potential risk would be for people to only use e-
cigarettes as a short-term measure to help them stop smoking,
rather than using them long term as an alternative to cigarettes."
The NHS website does not give any advice to the mice involved in
this research or others who might be following their example.
There are, however, unforeseen consequences which need to be
highlighted. The tiny vaping devices made for use by mice who are
trying to wean themselves off cigarettes are a health hazard -
particularly when used by absent minded or untidy members of
the species. Babies at the crawling stage tend to put pretty much
anything they find on the floor in their mouths and these 'mouse
friendly' devices are dangerous if swallowed or inhaled. For this
reason, Public Health England is advising parents NOT to give in
to pressure from the rodents with whom they share their home to
purchase 'mini E-cigarettes' as the risks outweigh any possible
benefits.
NEW PRODUCT TO HELP SMOKERS QUIT. Voke, a new nicotine
inhaler which looks like a traditional cigarette (and works a bit like
an asthma inhaler) is now available.
Sandhiya Sodhaim writes in MIMS: "The Voke inhaler mimics a
traditional cigarette through both its packaging and administration
but does not rely on heat or burning to disperse the nicotine into
the body. It is indicated to aid smokers over 18 years wishing to
quit or reduce prior to quitting, to assist smokers who are unwilling
or unable to smoke, and as a safer alternative to smoking for
smokers and those around them.
Voke differs from an e-cigarette as it is a non-electronic device
which delivers a low (450 microgram) dose of nicotine into the
arterial system via the lungs, without vaporisation.
There are three steps to using the Voke inhaler: click, charge and
inhale. The stick is removed from the box and pushed into a
charging slot at the base of the box. This fills the stick with a low
dose of nicotine which is then inhaled, over a similar time frame to
a cigarette."
We're reminded that smoking in pregnancy is a no-no and told that:
"Ideally smoking cessation in pregnant and lactating women should
be achieved without nicotine replacement therapy (NRT). However,
if the mother cannot quit without pharmacological support, NRT
may be used as a safer alternative to smoking."
Voke is theoretically available on prescription as an aid to smoking
cessation or reduction, but I imagine it will be some time before
GPs are allowed to dish it out in this part of the world. You can buy
it over the counter, though - but it's not cheap.
Needless to say, because it's 'new', you'll need to keep a look out
for the pros and cons that become apparent after it's been in
widespread use for some time.

Annual Santa Visit and Request
for Donations
Each year over Christmas Santa and his friends visit two elderly
care homes in SWF - Windle Court and Eastham - to hand out
presents to residents (and staff if we have enough) and look for
help from the local community in donating a gift or two. These
are people often on their own, have no friends or family and
might be alone at Christmas. We try and spread a bit of joy and
happiness. If you are able to help please wrap a present (if
possible), mark it M (male), Female (female) or E (either) and drop
to 42 Brent Avenue or contact me and I will collect.
Many thanks for your continued support and Merry Christmas!
Neil Casey aka Santa. 07949 592110.

Being Santa
Being Santa must be fun!
Giving gifts to everyone
And riding on a magic sleigh;
Jingle jingle all the way.
He's read a billion Christmas lists,
Employed some elves to wrap the gifts,
Fed the reindeer, tied his boots
And slipped into his nice red suit.
Setting out on Christmas Eve,
Flying over towns and trees,
To every place, down every road
To all the children round the globe.
It's such a feat of dedication
Speeding to each destination
With a smile upon his face
Then onward, to another place.
When he's been all round the world
To every boy and every girl
And left some presents to be found,
His work is done; he's homeward bound!
Mince pies and milk, he's had plenty.
His heart is full, his sack is empty.
He cheers as he returns, a winner.
Home in time for Christmas dinner!

WEST HAM FC BRING FESTIVE FUN TO ESSEX CHRISTMAS MARKETS!
Kids Inspire was named charity of the year at two local festive
events this past weekend. Monies raised will make a positive
difference to young people across Essex and this is all thanks to
the generosity of those in attendance and the organisations which
manage the events.
On Saturday 7 December, Stock Village Christmas Market chose
Kids Inspire as one of two named charities for the annual festive
event.
While on Sunday 8 December, Kids Inspire were chosen as the
charity of the year for the annual Christmas Market in Shenfield.
Organised and sponsored by local Solicitors, Rainer Hughes, a
highlight at Shenfield was a visit from Carlton Cole & Marlon
Harewood from football team West Ham United. One of the
talented team held a claret and blue ‘Worry Buddy’ as his mascot
for the day, while Jack Sullivan and other representatives from
West Ham ladies team joined in the festivities holding fundraising
buckets and happily posing for photos with fans throughout
the day.
Additionally, Barclays hosted a Santa’s Grotto and Rainer Hughes
a gaming bus, while other shops supported the fundraising by
holding their own hamper raffles and collecting pots! Proceeds will
all go towards making a positive difference to children across
Essex.
Jason Panesar, Practice Consultant
from Rainer Hughes commented:
“The Rainer Hughes team
sponsored both the Gaming Bus
and Santa Grotto. Over 20 staff
volunteered over the weekend to help setup and run both facilities.
The event was a real success and Rainer Hughes were helped by
Jack Sullivan, Carlton Cole and Marlon Harewood from West Ham
FC.”
Rachael Basset, Kids Inspire Fundraiser said: “We were so pleased
to be named charity at not one but two Christmas events. These
events are not just about monies raised, but also about the
opportunity to get out and about locally to tell people about the
work we do.
This weekend has been busy but it has really got us all into the
Christmas spirit. It is satisfying to know that all efforts will make a
positive difference to young lives across Essex. Thank you to the
local businesses and organisations that have well and truly shown
us the true spirit of ‘giving at Christmas’.”
At both Christmas markets, the Kids Inspire fundraising Team
hosted a stall selling reindeer food, sweets, a teddy tombola,
Christmas Eve books and the iconic Worry Buddy’s – all handknitted
by a team of Kids Inspire supporters.

Essex County Councils new initiative
United in Kind heralds Bicknacre Friendship Club.
lunch, have a friendly chat with other like minded locals, who were
in the same time of life as themselves. All in the welcoming
atmosphere of The Brewers Arms Pub.
It was Peter Brown, the then Pub Landlord, that played a major
role in the launch and the continued growth, supporting the Club
with his wonderful, community spirit, for 7 years, until retiring last
July.
The Club went on to start up ‘Learn to Play Bridge’ club, initially
at the pub until its success meant it outgrew this venue and had
to move to the village hall.
Also, in those years BFC ran brilliant ‘Murder Mystery’ nights,
along with the new village tradition of ‘ The Spirit of Christmas’.
All with Peters undying support.
So it was particularly wonderful when BFC and all its members,
were able to return his friendship and welcome Peter and Karen
as new members, at The Rettendon Bell for Christmas lunch.
Committee Members all worked hard both, to prepare for and on
the day itself, to ensure “ A great time was had by all”.

Essex County Council has recognised there are many, many
isolated, lonely or alone people in Essex, so they launched a
campaign to reach out to try to help combat it.
The campaign, United in Kind, is being rolled out throughout
Essex and ECC was so impressed by the successful activity already
established at Bicknacre Friendship Club ( BFC ), they asked them
if they could join them for the Christmas lunch, so they could
witness for themselves the friendship members already enjoy and
give to others.
Our unending thanks go to...
Martin ( Our Bridge Master) who set and delivered a great Xmas
Quiz, giving a lovely bottle of wine in a fab wine cooler, to the
winner Angelina Robinson
Molly who runs the lovely ‘Afternoon Tea” monthly at Woodham
Ferrers School Room Tea Rooms.
Angelina, who comes up with all the wonderful ideas and
manages ‘Events and Trips’.
Sandy, Chair & ‘Lunch Club’ organise & management.
Not forgetting our own Parish Council who’s support meant, most
of the ‘Free’ raffle prizes and table gifts could be purchased in
addition to donations from Committee Members themselves.
“ What an amazing day”.
That just leaves one thing to say. “Thank You Essex County
Council for making us your ‘stars’ and for using BFC as an example
of the friendship and happiness available, if you it’s wanted.

United in Kind bought with them BBC TV, ITV, BBC Radio Essex
as well as ECC own photographer, all with the intention of using
BFC story as inspiration to others throughout Essex.
The atmosphere was bonkers, diners had double the usual fun
watching cameras roll, interviews and photos being taken.
Roy, the Manager at The Bell Pub at Rettenden was wonderful,
making sure lunch wasn’t spoilt and everything went smoothly.
“Thanks Roy for being a great host”. You can see from the photos,
everybody “had a hoot” Shirley said.
BFC started in 2013 with the launch of its Lunch Club. This gave
locals the opportunity to wander down to their local pub and over

FOOTBALL
FOR ADULTS
I organise casual football matches for adults on the
3G pitches at the William de Ferrers Sports Centre.
If you are like me and want to play football but don’t
want the commitment of playing for a club then get
in touch. The idea is just to enjoy a game and get
some exercise at the same time.
We play every Tuesday night in all-weather between
9pm-10pm and hire half of the full size pitch closest
to the centre itself. The cost is £5 on the night.
The sports centre run a strict cancellation policy
which means I need to give them 15 days’ notice if
we do not have enough players and want to cancel,
otherwise I still have to pay. For that reason I need
to ask players to confirm availability in advance and
ask that you avoid dropping out.

Paper Mache Bunny Pinata Instructions
Step 1
Cover the entire work area with newspaper, including the floor if you
are working with small children.
Step 2
Tear sheets of newspaper into 1 by 8-inch strips, and set them aside
to be used later.
Step 3
Prepare the paper mache paste by mixing 1 part flour to 2 parts
water in a large bowl. Continue mixing and adding more water or
flour until the mixture is thick or the consistency of glue. Make sure
there are no lumps.
Mon-Fri: 09:00 - 17:30
Tue: 09:00 - 19:30
Sat-Sun: 11:00 - 15:00

Step 4
Blow air into the balloon until it is nice and firm. Close it by tying a
knot at the end. Using the cardboard and scissors, cut out two ear
shapes and tape each one to the top of the balloon. Place the
balloon inside a round bowl to hold it in place as you work on the
paper mache bunny.
Step 5
Dip strips of newspaper into the flour paste mixture and spread
them onto the surface of the balloon, smoothing the strips as you
go. Cover the entire balloon with the strips, leaving only a small hole
at the top. The hole allows you to fill the pinata with sweets; so
make it big enough to push the sweets through. Allow the first layer
to dry.
Step 6
Continue adding more layers of paper mache to your balloon,
allowing each layer to dry before starting another layer. After the
balloon is completely dry, pop it.
Step 7
Decorate your pinata by painting, or any other desired technique to
make your bunny.
Step 8
Add 3-inch squares of tissue paper to the bunny by spreading glue
on the pinata. Grab all four corners of the tissue paper and stick the
center of it onto the glue with the corners sticking up. (This step is
optional, but it looks more store-bought.)

117 Hullbridge Road, South Woodham Ferrers, CM3 5LL
www.ahead4.com
Step 9
Stuff the sweets through the hole of the pinata until full (your
preference). Hang your pinata by poking four holes spaced evenly
around the original hole at the top. Thread yarn through each hole, tie
the ends together at the top and tie another piece of yarn to the end.
