Girlguiding has launched a campaign
called Future Girl Acts and over 5,800
units nationwide took part in the first
Planet Protectors challenge. We want to
make big change so for this first
challenge we are working together to
tackle plastic pollution. Our units in
South Woodham, from Rainbows to
Rangers, took part in activities to
highlight the problems of plastic
pollution and how we can help tackle it.
The girls were asked to collect their
plastic rubbish over a week and bring it
into their meetings. They then worked
out how much there was and made a
plastic sculpture of an animal that they
would like to save. They talked about
what they could do and whether it would
be a good idea to introduce a plastic
bottle deposit scheme. Finally they
made a plastic promise.
Most of the promises were about
recycling more and using a reusable
water bottle but the star promise from
one of our Brownies, Chloe, was about
what her family has already done to
reduce plastic use and would be a good
one for all of us to follow:
• We have replaced our cutlery and
crockery with products made with
bamboo. We use reusable cups
• We use reusable shopping bags
• We have reusable water bottles
• We will not use plastic straws
• We have milk delivered in glass bottles
• We use beeswax wraps instead of cling
film

GP SURGERIES AND OTHER NHS AT CROUCH VALE MEDICAL CENTRE FROM 11 NOV
After four years of planning, discussion and construction, the three
GP surgeries in South Woodham Ferrers will be open in a modern
new facility from Monday 11 November.
Greenwood Surgery, Brickfields Surgery and Kingsway Surgery will
be moving into Crouch Vale Medical Centre, on Burnham Road near
the Sainsbury’s site, over the weekend of 9th and 10th November.
This is the first of its kind medical facility in Mid Essex – where
multiple GP practices will be providing primary care services within
one medical centre.
The new medical centre will provide a premises that is fit for the 21st
century and gives a great opportunity for integrated health provision
for the town.
The practices and other parts of the local NHS have worked with local transport
companies, charities and other NHS services that support you to ensure the smoothest
possible transition. And we are incredibly grateful to you, our local community, for
your patience during the transition.
The latest version of the FAQ for the three surgeries’ registered patients will be up on
their websites very soon along with details of transport arrangements to make getting
to Crouch Vale Medical Centre (a name chosen suggestions submitted by local
residents) as smooth as possible.
The reception desk on the ground floor of Crouch Vale Medical Centre will be
residents’ gateway to most of the services available in the new building. Medical
services ranging from GPs and practice nurses to the blood testing service from Mid
Essex Hospital Trust and voluntary groups based on the first floor will all be offered
from this new medical facility.
The practices are also sharing a newsletter with their patients covering more details
of the move and this is available on their websites.

NEWS
We have been delighted with new people coming through the door to experience the restaurant, word is certainly getting
about! Ben has changed the menu’s and added a few new items and taken some away, but we will be varying the menu
every couple of months; as some customers tell us they have had every single item on the menu with the frequency of their
visits!
November is now here and we have a few tickets left for our West Ham night with Tony Cottee on November 20th, 3
courses plus speech from Tony for £39.95. Tony was a prolific striker for West Ham Everton and Leicester but better known
now for his work on Sky TV as a pundit. Earlier this year Tony had a brain haemorrhage and if it was not for his quick-thinking
football pal Phil Thompson then it might have been a different story. Tony will talk of his career and his views on this season
so far not only for West Ham but for the other premiership clubs as well.
Then we start the Christmas countdown; we have booked a few groups and parties in and hopefully you will join us?
Christmas day and New year’s Eve is filling up but at time of print still a few places available.
As we meet many people who visit we get asked the story of Ben and his progression to being head chef and owner of the
Drunken Dragon.
David, Ben’s dad tells the story. “Ben when he left school wandered from job to job. Then one night he decided he wanted
to get into catering, my wife and I both raised our eyebrows and said “Okay Ben” we will leave it to you. Ben said he wanted
to start at the bottom as a kitchen porter and learn the trade. He joined Cotes in Chelmsford as a kitchen porter doing the
washing of the dishes pots and pans etc, we were waiting for the conversation, “I have had enough of this I want to look
for another job” then one Sunday night, my wife and I were watching Poldark and Ben bursts
into the Lounge putting all the lights on and pausing the TV all excited explaining how the
dessert chef had not turned up and Ben was now on desserts, however he had to learn
20 odd different desserts ingredients and process how to make the dessert and
garnish. He wanted us to name a dessert and he would parrot fashion tell us all
the information it was like the chants you hear at monasteries for 2 weeks. Since
then he has not looked back. He joined a number of local well-known restaurants
in the area and moaned bitterly that they were not making dish’s from scratch bu
just getting something out of the freezer and cooking it or re heating a pre prepared
item. He ended up happy at The Lion at Boreham and for several months was
part of their successful team. Ben likes progression and it was inevitable that I would
get a text with an estate agent details of the Brewers Arms.
The rest as the saying goes is history, we have totally transformed the kitchen and the
pub has had a facelift. Our latest edition is the artwork in the Garden room, although
we wanted this for the opening it was delayed by a number of weeks. I was thinking
I had been scammed by an international art dealer & started the process of getting
my money back then the family of the artist advised that the artist had just
passed away. Leonid Afremov was a renowned Pallette knife oil painter
and Ben managed to get 3 of his originals Miles Davis, George Benson
and Jimmi Hendrix when you visit have a look. As David says “Art is to
everyone’s taste but Ben really likes them and of course there was
a certain Dragon that was not to everyone’s taste on the
side of the pub restaurant Wall!”

KIND OF BLUE GETS READY
FOR CHRISTMAS
On Sunday afternoon 2-5pm 15th December, "Kind of Blue", a
local modern jazz group, will be providing a Christmas
spectacular in the hall of the Bell, Woodham Ferrers.
This event will consist of 2 parts:
In the first section we will entertain you with our usual blend of jazz
"classics", which has obviously pleased our regular clientele over
the last year of "record size" audiences.
At the halfway point in the afternoon, the band will "down tools"
for a 30 minute interlude, when you'll be able to avail yourselves
of Sue's delicious buffet and mulled wine.
Winners of the raffle will be announced, before we begin the 2nd
half:
This will be in the form of a Christmas "singalong", led by Pauline,
thus, finishing the afternoon in true "festive" spirit.
This is a charity event, and due to demand, we will have to restrict
numbers, so entry will have to be by ticket only, priced £5.
Make sure you get yours soon, for they are already going like
wildfire!!
Contact Dave 07774912083, or the Bell 01245 320443.
Proceeds will go to Breast Cancer and Crohn's disease.
If you can't wait until then, the band will be performing on Monday,
25th November 8.30-11 in the hall of the Bell.
Entry and sandwiches are free.
So, hopefully we will see you soon in one, or both of the "gigs"
above. We will endeavour to give you a good time.

SOUTH WOODHAM FLOWER CLUB
South Woodham Flower Club enjoyed a fabulous evening of flowers at their Gala Night on Friday, 27th September at William de
Ferrers School. Our demonstrator, Emily Broomhead who had travelled from Salisbury to be with us, created the most amazing designs
with an extravagant array of flowers. We were pleased to have members from several other clubs in the nearby area join us for what
was a very enjoyable evening.
If you are interested in flowers and flower arranging then why not join us. Our next meeting is on Thursday, 14th November at the WI
Hall in Guys Farm Road at 8.00 pm. We are always pleased to welcome visitors and new members. I hope to see you there!
SOUTH WOODHAM FERRERS SCHOOL PASTORS – 1 YEAR ON
The South Woodham Ferrers School Pastors Team have been
supporting students within William De Ferrers Secondary school
since September 2018 and were recently awarded a £2000 grant
from South Woodham Ferrers Town Council. So who are the School
Pastors and what exactly do they do?
School Pastors is a UK wide initiative of the Christian Charity
Ascension Trust. Other Ascension Trust initiatives that you may
have heard of include Street Pastors who help provide support to
those enjoying nights out in Chelmsford as well as other Town
Centres at the weekend. Rail Pastors and Response Pastors are
other initiatives run by the charity.
The aim of School Pastors is to work in partnership with Secondary
schools, colleges and other local agencies to enhance the safety
and emotional and social well-being of students through caring,
listening and helping.
Mental health disorders in young people have increased in recent
years and with teachers managing a busy workload and often both
parents out at work, it can be difficult for students to find someone
that has the time to listen to them. That’s where the School Pastors
come in . They are able to help ensure students have access to the
right support by pointing them to the particular agencies they may
require.
After spending the spring/summer of 2018 training for the role,
the South Woodham Ferrers team launched in William De Ferrers
School in September last year becoming the first School Pastor
team in the East of England. They started with 8 people from 4
different local churches who happily volunteer their time providing
support to students. The team is made up of people from a range
of age groups and backgrounds.
The School Pastors have provided support to the School by
providing a presence within the school grounds at lunchtimes as
well as patrolling after school in the local community, helping to
act as a deterrent for anti-social behaviour. They have also enjoyed
attending local events such as the School Christmas Carol service,
East Hanningfield fete, SWFest and Wickford Carnival.
Mr Applewhite, the headteacher at William De Ferrers has praised
the work of the School Pastors. Students and staff have embraced
the members of the team and some great relationships have
started to form over the last year, with young people happy to
come and chat with members of the team about how they are.
Many look forward to the weekly visit from the School Pastors and
gladly accept the refreshments or treats that the team occasionally
hand out during lunch time.
After being fortunate enough to receive a generous £2000 grant
from South Woodham Ferrers Town Council the School Pastor
team hope to expand the support that they are currently offering
to the students and staff at William de Ferrers. The money will help
towards the costs of recruiting, training and providing uniform to
new volunteers, enabling the team to increase the amount of days
that they are in school as well as events that they are able to
attend.
Coordinator for the team Jordine Nunn stated “The heart of each
person on our team is to ensure that young people feel listened
to, valued and supported.
The teenage years come with many challenges. We want to cheer
young people on, helping them to overcome those challenges, see
their self-worth and step into all the amazing things life has for
them. We truly believe that each person has the ability to be a
world changer.”

Have the kids sit around
a table. Place a mug or

of each player. Scatter
mini marshmallows all
over the table. Give each
kid a straw. Set a timer.
Kids must use the straw
to suck up marshmallows

REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY
Holy Trinity Church on
Sunday 10th November, at 10.45am
In November every year poppy sellers will be seen throughout
the country with their trays of poppies, for the 2 weeks prior to
Remembrance Sunday. We will be in the Asda foyer from
Saturday 26th October until Saturday 9th November, with
poppies and other merchandise available. We would like to
thank Asda for allowing us to collect in the foyer again, and also
the many businesses around the town who also support us.
It is 80 years this year since the start of World War II, and there
are those who still remember the war and the effect it had on
their lives. 2019 has also seen the 75th Anniversary of D-Day
and many of you will have seen the commemorative events on
the television. We are very proud that one of the members of
our Branch is a D-Day Veteran.
Another area of conflict in World War II was the Far East, and
the Battle of Kohima also took place in 1944. The Kohima poem
is recited at every Remembrance Service and says “When you
go home, tell them of us and say, For your tomorrow we gave
our today”, and this is still relevant today.
We should never forget the sacrifices made by so many in two
World Wars, and areas around the world where conflict still
exists.
The Poppy Appeal total for the year 1st October 2018 - 30th
September 2019, stands at a magnificent £25,424.20, and we
would like to thank everyone for their generosity.
We hope you will continue to support the Poppy Appeal and
thereby enable the Royal British Legion to continue their work
in helping our Armed Forces and Veterans who are in need.
Please Note: There is a change of Venue for the
Remembrance Service this year. It will be held in Holy Trinity
Church on Sunday 10th November, starting at 10.45am
For Evermore Their
Names Will Live
For evermore their names will live
and timeless are the thanks we give
to those who gave us peace.
Remember those once close and gone,
remember, as our time moves on,
their sacrifice for us
and joys they never shared.
For evermore our debt will grow
and evermore our pledge must show
that we keep freedom safe.
Remember now their gift and say
“Remembered with true pride today”
for the all the peaceful years
in memory. Their memory.

Stephen is a painter of people in sport, combining human
action and movement He loves to observe an individual or
group and secretly invents a story based on their
movements, inflections, and attitudes. He works quickly on a

the scenes in the colours I perceive …to create a vibrant
active painting, showing movement and effort’.

WHERE DID THOSE SPOTS
COME FROM?
Kevin Barber Owner of Careclean, Carpet
Cleaning Business has been established for
over 35 years and will be writing our
featured monthly column on Cleaning
providing tips and guidance to keeping
your home clean and healthy.
It’s Not Just About The Appearance! It’s Time To Start Living
Smarter!
Most people would consider the home as a safe place for a
family. However, with modern life being so busy and our homes
fitted with double glazing and central heating, this has not been
a great formula for keeping us healthy!
While saving energy reduces the effects of global warming it has
a bad effect on our ‘Microenvironment’ …the home! BUT IS IT
TOO LATE…?
Of course not! Here’s the good news: Your home will not make
you sick! Just having wall-to-wall carpeting and nice upholstery
doesn’t mean you’re sitting on a time bomb that will go off one
day and make you allergic!
In fact it’s quite the opposite… your soft furnishings act as a
filter and trap most of the impurities in the air until your ready
to clean them. Think about it… what can hard floors hold?
We want you to enjoy your home and to get on with your life…
so simple planned maintenance will transform your home and
keep your furnishings clean, fresh and healthy!
Please don’t hesitate to give Careclean a call
on 01245 323989. Our friendly and
knowledgeable team can offer you advice.
Furthermore, if required, we can book in a
free cleaning quote for you too.

It's taken a local resident Alan Brunning to give up his time to
check out the mistakes ,that seem to have been made with the
significant issues stated in issue 927, about the problems at the
new roundabout .Maybe a Big Brown envelope may have passed
hands between those responsible for the development. Well done
Mr Brunning in taken the time to bring this problem to SWF

Sainsbury's Roundabout

I fully agree with Alan Brunning regarding his comments in last
weeks Focus regarding this roundabout and I attach the text
below of an email that I sent to Essex Highways. So far I have not
received a response other than a promise to forward my
comments to the relevant Manager who would respond to me.
It appears to me that the planning for this site has been carried
out by a person or persons who have little concept of road safety
but Sainsburys have obviously offered something to ease the
project along.
The fact that the project is taking so long and has caused an
immense amount of disruption and cost to local residents and
businesses speaks volumes for whole planning process and the
contractor who is carrying out the work.

The notice of implementation is dated 17th October 2019 but the
crossings are already in situ before that date albeit minus the
electrics. This does not allow you to deal with any objections that
you may receive as we are presented with a “fait accompli”
My objections are as follows. The Pelican Crossing is too close to
the junction with Hullbridge Road.
My understanding is that 25 metres is the distance required not
21.5 metres that you suggest.
The Zebra Crossing in Hullbridge Road is too close to the junction
with the 1012 Burnham Road
And the Zig Zag lines are not of the required length.
If these facts are in dispute, can you say why in the past a request
for a Zebra Crossing 200 metres further along Hullbridge Rd
outside the Community Centre to assist the Lollipop crossing was
turned down. The reason given was the proximity of the junction
with The Chase.
I must conclude that road safety has been compromised and that
your Statement of Reasons is flawed.
I look forward to your response
Yours sincerely

Millwood WI October Meeting
Maggi Piper was the speaker for our October meeting with a talk titled ‘Street Art’. Maggi is a London Blue Badge Tourist Guide.
Maggi began photographing things that made her smile. Maggi entertained us showing us her slides of the things she had
photographed including ‘Two mice and a piece of cheese’ in Philpot Street and a statue of Thomas Coram of the East India
Company who started the Foundling Hospital in the late 1700’s. Another slide was a photograph of an Arabian Bank which was
covered in symbols to do with the sea. Maggi wondered why and discovered that it had been the Oceanic Insurance Company.
We all had a very interesting evening looking and learning about Maggi’s slides.
Our trade stall was ‘Traidcraft’ selling Christmas cards as well as biscuits, chocolate, coffee and sugar and many other items.

Rest in Peace
There have been many discoveries, inventions and achievements by humanity which, down through the
centuries, have enhanced, enriched and prolonged life. But, despite these many advances, when a loved
one dies, alongside our grief and heartbreak, we are likely to experience a feeling of complete helplessness.
The reason for this is because their body, which in our love for them we comforted, fed, nursed, clothed,
washed, protected and willingly sacrificed ourselves for, is no longer living and will not respond to our
attentions. Our love for that person does not of course end with their death, but the immediate practical,
physical expressions of our love for them does. When death occurs, it would appear that there is nothing
more we can do, except provide a respectful end to their mortal remains.
However, the Catholic Church has always encouraged us to continue to show our love for those who have gone before us in
tangible, practical ways. The Church does this by maintaining a tradition of the Jewish Religion which dates back to the Old
Testament times of over 2000 years ago. Even before the coming of Jesus Christ and His Resurrection, His victory over bodily
death, God’s chosen people were already offering prayers and making sacrifices to help those who had died; they continued to
show their love for them in tangible, physical ways.
During the month of November especially, the Catholic Church asks us to focus our thoughts on all the faithful departed and
particularly on those in Purgatory - that school of love provided by Almighty God to prepare those destined for heaven, but who
left this life not loving Him and their neighbour as much as they should or as much as they could. Jesus Christ said, “I am the
Way, the Truth and the Life, no one can come to the Father (get into heaven) except through Me.” The “Way” of Christ was
always the way of love, perfect love for His Father in heaven, perfect love for His neighbour here on earth. A love which culminated
and was visibly shown on the Cross: the definitive act of love shown by God and man in the one Person, Jesus Christ, who is both
truly God and man. This love shown by Jesus is the only true yardstick which the whole of humanity is called to live up to and, if
practised, becomes our means to heaven.
By our prayers (the sacrifice of time), by our charity (the sacrifice of time or possessions given to others), we can make up for
what those who have gone before us may have sometimes failed to do while on earth, and so help them on their way to heaven
- that place of perfect joy, peace and happiness won for everyone, if they want it, by Christ’s death on the Cross and prepared
by the Risen Christ, our God and brother, who has gone before us. May the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy
of God, rest in peace.

ALTERNATIVE TO SMEAR TEST IN THE PIPELINE. Researchers at
Queen Mary University and The Royal London Hospital have developed
a non-invasive test to detect cervical pre-cancer by analysing urine and
vaginal samples collected by the women themselves.
EurekAlert explains: "The initial use of self-sampling is likely to be for
women who do not attend clinic after a screening invitation and
countries without a cervical cancer screening programme. In the longer
term, self-sampling could become the standard method for all screening
tests. The study indicated that women much preferred doing a test at
home than attending a doctor's surgery,"
Cervical cancer is the fourth most frequently occurring cancer in women
in the world. In the UK around there are about 2 deaths every day.
Infection with the human papillomavirus (HPV) is the main cause of
cervical cancer - and 'safe sex' has been the mainstay of prevention.
Now we also have the HPV jab - and the NHS website reminds us that
"From September 2019, all 12- and 13-year-olds in school Year 8 will be
offered on the NHS the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine" ... and ...
"Those who missed their HPV vaccination in school Year 8 can continue
to have the vaccine up to their 25th birthday."
The current gold-standard method for picking up precancerous and
cancerous changes is the smear test - but, whilst the 'smear campaign'
in the UK has been very successful, there has been a decline in its
uptake, particularly in some areas in the UK.
Jerry Seinfield said: “A recent survey stated that the average person's
greatest fear is having to give a speech in public. Somehow this ranked
even higher than death which was third on the list. So, you're telling me
that at a funeral, most people would rather be the guy in the coffin than
have to stand up and give a eulogy.” The 'Don't die of Embarrassment'
campaign worked on the same principle - some people would rather
risk dying of bowel cancer (which is eminently treatable if picked up
early) than send off a 'poo sample' when they get an invitation in the
post ... or seeing their GP when they develop symptoms. (Google
'Bowel cancer - Symptoms - NHS' - and scroll down past the rubbish -
for details). It seems the same theory applies to smear tests - and the
new test (which raises the possibility of samples being collected at
home) - may help get round this problem. This new test won't, however,
be rolled out throughout the NHS for some considerable time - so, for
now, the message is have your smear test when it's due. Google '
Cervical screening - NHS' for more info.
I remember what my grandmother said to me on her deathbed. She
said: ‘I wish I’d bought a normal bed.' John Luke Roberts
MEASLES acts like a computer virus - it can wipe your immune system's
memory. The New Scientist journal explains: "Measles is known to make
children vulnerable to other infections. Now two major studies of Dutch
Orthodox Protestants, who reject vaccination, have discovered why: it
massively damages the immune system, making measles even more
lethal than we realised. That is bad news, as measles cases worldwide
rise to levels not seen since 2006, increasing tenfold in Africa and
doubling in Europe. They have reached the highest numbers in years in
the US and England. There were 7 million cases worldwide in 2017, but
figures expected to be published this December show that numbers
rose “substantially” in 2018, says Katrina Kretsinger of the World Health
Organization. “All cases are because people who should have been
vaccinated were not,” she says, because of weak health systems, poor
public information and anti-vaccine sentiment."
The NS reminds us that: "After measles vaccination was introduced in
the 1960s, cases fell dramatically. Mysteriously, wherever that
happened, deaths from completely unrelated infections also dropped."
Now we have lost our measles free status we will doubtless see the
same trend here.
I'm reminded of the AIDS-education campaign lunched in the 1980s.
The catchphrase was: ‘Don’t Die of Ignorance.’ The same applies here -
measles is not just another mild childhood illness - and it's eminently
preventable. Perhaps the catchphrase for the next measles prevention
campaign should be: "Don't Dice with Death."
latest NHS figures show ... The shock stats, which work out at 42 every
day, include only admissions for “mental or behavioural” disorders and
not for physical harm."
One of the 'physical harms' that is seen with cocaine use is heart attacks
(even in the relatively young) - and, sure enough, cocaine deaths are on
the rise.
Meanwhile, The Daily Mail's front page proclaimed: "Hospitals deluged
by 5,000 diabetics a DAY: One in 10 admissions is for diabetes as cost
of treating patients DOUBLES in a decade." Sophie Borland's article
went on to say that:
"More than 1.7million type 2 diabetics were admitted to hospital last
year.
GP leaders warned some type 2 diabetics need up to 200 appointments
a year
The illness even appears to be having a worrying impact on younger
women.
One in ten patients admitted to hospital are suffering from a form of
diabetes linked to being overweight and inactive."
I imagine that many if not most of these patients are blissfully unaware
that they are running into major health problems until they're in the
ambulance.
This news does not come as a surprise. The trend has been apparent for
many years as more and more of us develop weight problems and fail
to take enough exercise. It has been widely asserted that the bills for
diabetes care swallow up a 10th of the NHS budget. Diabetes.org.uk
reckons that: "Total health spending in England in the 2018-19 financial
year was £129bn, in Scotland £13bn and about £7bn in Wales" ... and
it's spiralling upwards all the time.
There is no shortage of information about the dangers of being
overweight and being diagnosed as a 'type 2' - and there is an increasing
awareness of damage to the vital organs (and the risk of heart attacks
and strokes). Science Daily adds another warning to the mix: "For years,
scientists have been trying to solve a medical mystery: Why do people
with diabetes have an increased risk of developing some forms of
cancer? Today, researchers report a possible explanation for this double
whammy. They found that DNA sustains more damage and gets fixed
less often when blood sugar levels are high, thereby increasing cancer
risk."
When it comes to taking avoiding action before you become one of the
statistics on the front pages, The Mail did run a series of articles which
offered sound advice. Google: 'David Unwin 7 rules to beat the bulge'

so take a look at them while you're at it.

CREDIT WHERE IT'S DUE. I went to St Peter's Hospital last week ... and
it was great. I wrote to 'the manager' as follows:
Dear Sir
I wish to complain that there was nothing to grumble about when I
visited St Peter's Hospital today for an x-ray. I’m now in my 70s and am
never happier than when there is something to whinge about – so I left
feeling bitterly disappointed.
The x-ray department is wonderful – whatever you pay your receptionist
it’s not nearly enough as she deals with all comers quickly and efficiently.
As an added bonus, she is extremely pleasant. The radiographer was
likewise congenial and clearly very competent.
I half hoped that, when I got back to my car, I would find a parking ticket
on it – (as I couldn’t find anywhere to pay for parking) – but there wasn’t
one, so that was yet another opportunity missed for a bit of a beef.

IN THE NEWS. This Monday the Sun's front page went with the
headline: "MIDLINE CRISIS" adding: "Middle-aged cocaine users are
being rushed to hospital at a record rate. Cases involving those in their
50s and 60s hit 1,774 last year — three times the number five years ago,
It seems you don't pay for parking at St Peter's. The cafe was also
terrific. The staff couldn't have been more friendly and helpful and there
was even a pianist!
I went to The Springfield Hospital the following day as an NHS patient
and it was fine - but, that said, the receptionists could learn a thing or
two from their counterparts at St Peters - and there was no pianist.

GREAVESEY DOES KENYA
Weekend on the Isle of Wight - By Tim Saunders
A weekend on the Isle of Wight gives the opportunity of discovering some wonderful litter free beaches.
We sail from Portsmouth to Fishbourne with Wightlink. Arriving by car at the port near Gunwharf Quays it’s a matter of showing our
home printed boarding pass and then queuing. Once on board the ferry we go outside to wave goodbye to Portsmouth and watch the
white foam of the waves behind. It’s a bit wetter than usual on deck due to the heavy rain and we venture inside for the children to go
to the play area complete with slide and climbing area. They thoroughly enjoy this. The boat seems very new and up to date with plenty
of comfortable seating. It’s a surprisingly quick crossing taking around 30 minutes. The sun is shining when we disembark and drive to
Cowes.
We’re able to find a side road to park with no time restriction and then saunter off towards the town. Soon the children discover a park
and demand to play in it. They’ve been ever so good. So how can we decline? Henry spots a policeman, who says, “Good morning.” And
Henry (3) becomes shy, for a change. After a while we all agree to head towards town. There is an array of independent and charity
shops. Caroline and Heidi (6) stop to watch two street entertainers while Harriett (8), Henry and I window shop. We make our way to the
water’s edge to see the start of the world famous Cowes Week regatta, which we later learn is postponed due to bad weather. Apparently
visibility is very poor and there are strong winds. Hard to believe when our crossing was fine. The heavens have opened and everyone is
ducking for cover, apart from us. Despite this we do glimpse some action on the water.
After our picnic in the car we make our way to Sandown to the AA 2 star Wight Bay Hotel, with its imposing and historic roadside frontage.
There is ample parking for guests. An open mind is always important when staying in any hotel, no matter what the rating. Up the front
steps and inside where we are greeted by an extremely helpful and friendly receptionist. That cannot be said of many hotels we have
stayed in including some four star ones. We are informed that breakfast is between 730am and 9am and that check out is 1030am. It’s
almost bang on the 3pm check in and Henry desperately needs the toilet, as only he can. Key in hand we dash up the stairs to our ensuite
family room and Henry can now uncross his legs.
The room has two single beds and one double; Henry shares with Heidi, despite his insistence on the double bed. The room, which has
a new carpet, is comfortable and clean with a sea view. There’s a good supply of hot water, too. So often we have stayed in so-called
luxury establishments where the hot water runs out.
Time to explore Sandown. Leaving the car at the hotel without a worry we head down the road where there are various shops and further
on, the seaside. What a joy. Here we can rest and have some fun. We’ve brought a bucket, spade and a kite. So while Henry is busy
building sandcastles we un-wrap the kite and find that it’s very easy to fly. So often these can be complicated to operate but this is very
child friendly and perfect for daddy, too. The fairly strong sea breeze makes it soar high and for a long time. We all enjoy having a go.
After a meal we retire to the hotel where there is entertainment in the bar from Tony, a singer and guitarist, who plays well-known hits.
It’s great.
A restful night’s sleep follows and in the morning there is a self-service breakfast in the dining room; cereal or cooked. We chat to other
guests as we queue.
This is a very down to earth hotel with friendly staff who talk to you. After saying our goodbyes we head for Shanklin because Harriett
needs some new shoes and the hotel receptionist helpfully points us in this direction.
Shanklin boasts another wonderful sandy beach with no litter in sight. Here we find ourselves back to building sandcastles and flying our
kite. However, we also do a spot of paddling and Harriett finds some sea snails that she rescues and then puts back in the sea.
Our return crossing to Portsmouth with Wightlink is prompt and the little ones discover the cinema, which is showing Sing, a computer
animated film. They watch it for the duration of the trip.

SWF RUFC WEEKLY ROUNDUP
SWF RFC U16 vs Thames
This week Woodham travelled away to
Thames. This would be the team’s first
visit to the Thames ground in South
Ockendon, with the Thames team
being formed from some of the u16’s
from the Stanford team that folded
this season.
Woodham received the kick off on a
nice flat pitch, with the Autumn sun
beating down in stark contrast to
yesterday’s downpours. Woodham
pushed hard from the off and were
soon encamped deep into the hosts
22. The scrum was working well and
dominating the Thames pack. The
first of Woodham’s try’s came after 7 minutes.
The forwards won the ball at the scrum and punching through split the
Thames defence. The ball quickly out to the backs and H broke free
opening his legs to drive for the corner. With 2 defenders chasing him
down it looked like he wasn’t going to make the line, but tackled across he
kept control of the ball long enough to apply downward pressure. After a
discussion with the touch judge the try was awarded. Rhino took the
conversion but with this missed the early lead was 5-0.
The early try seemed to shake the home side, and Woodham continued to
apply the pressure from the restart. The home side cracked after 4 minutes
of Woodham attack and Woodham’s second try came from Nathan. This
time Rhino’s conversion was good and Woodham’s lead stretched to 12-0.
The Woodham pack continued to dominate the scrum, but both sides were
struggling with the throw at the lineout, with the referee not giving any
leeway to either side. Woodham’s lifting was on point and the jumpers
were being held high for long enough to win the ball. Woodham force 2
errors on the home side at 18 and 21 minutes, with Woodham being
awarded penalty’s and electing to take the points with both kicks good.
The score now 18-0 with 14 minutes of the half left.
More of the same continued and Woodham managed to get another score
before the end of the half on 27 minutes. Again the forwards working hard
at the breakdown to secure/win the ball and getting it out to the backs
saw Redmond cross the line. Again the conversion was good and the score
remained unchanged at 25-0 as the half time whistle blew.
Woodham took the kick off to start the second half and were firmly pushing
again into the Thames 22. Woodham’s pressure taking its toll on the hosts,
another well worked set piece saw Gerrard push though the Thames
defence to cross within 2 minutes of the restart. The conversion from Rhino
good, Woodhams lead extended to 32-0.
Woodham dominated the hosts for the remained of the game and 2
minutes later saw the deciding try of the match through scrum half Jim
under the posts. The conversion taking the score to 39-0, the match was
concluded in line with this seasons league rules. The home side elected to
play on with the score not counting and Woodham moved players into
different positions to mix things up.
The home side didn’t give up and pushed the Woodham team hard, looking
like a different team for the last 20 minutes. However, Woodham still
managed to score several more converted try’s before the end of the 70
minutes.
The whole team worked hard today, with only the Woodham scrum tiring
in the last 10 minutes being one of the things to work on in training this
coming week. Man of the Match could have gone to any of the players,
but Redmond stood out with his drive, tackles and crossing for one of the
try’s of the game. Eddie getting donkey of the week through dropping
the ball as he crossed the line for what would have been his first try for
Woodham.
SWF RFC U13 vs Westcliff
Great game today from the boys whose scrummaging was excellent. The
pack was changed around today just before the match due to injury of Jack
who was missed today. Josh, Lukian and Mitchell formed a new front row
and they gelled well, Hayden and Cody were the locks and we tried Big
Joe as No 8. Once they formed a plan to lock out and absorb the first
shove, they then pushed as a unit and at that point there was no stopping
them. Numerous times the ref had to stop the scrum because the “Woods”
had pushed Westcliff back more than 1 metre (Age related safety rule)
which is a massive achievement. With some hooking practise this pack will
be a force to be reckoned with.
Westcliff had a couple of very talented players who would not have been
FOCUS
out of place in a Division 1 team. As a result they were able to put a couple
of scores on the board. What followed though was a fantastic effort from
Hayden who made his debut for the team today and topped it off with a
fantastic try.
Westcliff pushed back hard but then the boys rucking started to show
results opening up a gap for Noah to push through and score a well-earned
try.
A clash of heads left Woodham without Cody and Dan for some time and
Westcliff capitalised on 2 of our powerhouses being off the pitch. Cody
showed great spirit and demanded to get back on the pitch but was not
allowed and went off for a check-up. We wish him well. Tom came on and
got stuck in with some crunching tackles on players much bigger than
himself and reminded everyone why he’s such a good tackler.
The rest of the team stepped up with George and James trying to put some
plays together and motivate their team. They fed into the centres who
were doing everything possible to smash through Westcliff’s defence.
Noah, Dan (who’d returned to the pitch) and Nathan linked in well and put
in some good attacking plays. This created space for Ewan and Presley on
the wings who not only put in some testing runs but also put in some try
saving tackles. The effort being put into training by the boys is starting to
pay off with the ball being passed more regularly out to the wings.
James Skelt’s leadership and manner with the match officials was the
subject of positive comment and when the issue of Westcliff pushing in the
scrum too early was raised, this was listened to by the ref and acted upon.
George played out of his skin today and was everywhere. What’s more he
is developing brilliantly into the role of a scrum half by co-ordinating the
forwards in the rucks and getting a grip of every situation. We’ve created
a monster!! He repeatedly stifled the play of the opposition scrum half at
the scrum with some crunching tackles. Such was his influence that he was
awarded the ”Stinky Boot of Love” as man of the match.
Just before half time, Woodham were on the charge with at least 7 phases
of crash ball being strung together. The Westcliff defence were strong but
could not stand up to the intelligent fast ball being played and Dan crashed
over the line. Unfortunately, the TMO ruled that the ball had been held up
and the try was cruelly disallowed.
Not being put off, the “Woods” knuckled down and hit them again. Joe
took the ball into contact and forced a number of their players to commit
in order to bring him down, his quick thinking and playing the ball up
allowed Noah to drive on the attack and muscle his way through the
Westcliff defence to score his 2nd try of the match.
In the later stages of the match, Joe showed what a danger he can be. He
was put in the position of No8 for the first time today with the intention of
using his speed and power off the back of the scrum. This is a new concept
for the boys and it shows real promise for the future. Joe ran in the final
try for Woodham showing superb strength and determination by driving
through at least 4 players to score.
The final score 8 – 4 to Westcliff does not reflect how close the game was.
The boys came together as a team today and did themselves proud. At
every break of play they were huddled in together motivating each other
and showing a fantastic level of commitment and group determination.
There’s much to be proud of here and with the squad enlarging and
experience growing, it is just a matter of time before Woodham makes
some significant wins.
SWF RFC U10 vs Burnham, and Old Cooperians
Two teams turned up to play us. Burnham making the short trip, and Old
Coops ( with two teams ) making the longer journey.
Our squad was Brad, Ellis, Hayden, Keith, Luca, and Noah.
Old Coops up first. Some great rugby, plenty of effort, good skills and
rewarding to see some very enjoyable tries scored by both teams. Rucking
and mauling still improving with practise.
Old Coops again for the second game. A tougher proposition. The game
was faster and more physical. Both Teams played well and showed terrific
phases where it looked, smelt and felt like rugby...….brilliant. We needed
to play a player down for part of the game due to knocks and niggle, but
the Team dealt with this and rose to the challenge. Ellis tracking back the
length of the pitch to make try saving tackle on our line, then we win the
turnover, and go the full length to score - WOW!!!
Burnham for the last game. Everyone was blowing hard by this time, so we
cut the game time down. Some great passing and movement. The game
got pretty lose for both teams, and plenty of space opened up. Both teams
took advantage of this when someone's energy allowed.
Well done all the players on the day. Another step forward. Happy Days!
We are always looking to grow the squad. Please contact Gerry on 07880
498565 if you have, or know an U10 who wants to play rugby.

YOUNG SHOTOKAN TIGERS SHINE BRIGHT FOR THE MAYOR
Above: Mayor of Chelmsford Councillor Bob Massey and some of the Medal Winners and Officials.
Right: Photo of Jane Naylor-Jones, Mayor of Chelmsford Councillor Bob Massey, Richard Naylor-Jones and Richard
Kheder (KUGB Mental Health Ambassador).
Last weekend saw a large number of young athletes from Karate
Union of Great Britain (KUGB) Clubs from across the South East of
England enter the Shotokan Tigers Competition held at the William
De Ferrers Leisure Centre in South Woodham Ferrers.
This friendly tournament is for children aged 4 to 15 years old
(White belt to Black belt) allowing those competing for the first
time to watch, learn and compete alongside more experienced
competitors, many of whom have gone on to compete successfully
at National level, including members of the KUGB England Squad
for 2019.
The competition began with an opening ceremony with all the
Competitors lining up to take a bow in front of the enthusiastic
and supportive spectators. This certainly helped to relax the
youngsters knowing that the crowd would be cheering them on
throughout the competition.
The day began with the Elimination rounds for both Kata (set
forms) and Kumite (sparring). The level of Karate performances on
display were superb and it was evident that all the competitors had
been training hard to prepare. Throughout the day there were
some great matches demonstrating the passion and desire by the
young, enthusiastic athletes to reach the Finals.
The Finals were opened by Sensei Jane Naylor-Jones (5th Dan) who
introduced special guest Mayor of Chelmsford, Councillor Bob
Massey. In December, Sensei Jane was crowned ‘Coach of the
Year’ by Active Essex and she was commended for her work not
only with elite athletes but also in encouraging children to get
involved in Karate over many years. Jane highlighted that, as part
of Active Essex’s campaign to get more people active, today’s
competition was a great example of how KUGB Clubs across the
South East can get children to be active and support them to be
both healthy inside and out.
Sensei Richard Naylor-Jones (5th Dan), who is the KUGB’s National
Disability Officer and also an Active Essex All Together
Ambassador for Disability Sport, explained that the KUGB’s chosen
Annual Charity for 2019/2020 was ‘The Zachary Geddis Break the
Silence Trust’ bringing more awareness to the topic of mental
Health and a raffle was held to raise money for them. Richard
explained that “Karate is a martial art that has positive benefits for
both physical and mental health.
At the end of the exciting Finals there was a Ceremony where the
young finalists were presented with their medals by the Mayor of
Chelmsford Councillor Bob Massey alongside our Sponsors and
Senior Coaches.
We would like to thank everyone who competed and supported
this event – especially the Mayor of Chelmsford and our Sponsors:
Church and Hawes (SWF), ST Clothing (SWF), Asha Style, Finishing
Touches, JCY Steel Supplies, Kamae Martial Arts Equipment,
Regashi Karate Academy, Senshuken SKC, Stock SKC and Wok Inn.
We have received a lot of positive feedback from everyone who
attended who enjoyed the competition and friendly atmosphere
and Chelmsford Karate Club are look forward to hosting this event
in South Woodham Ferrers again next year.
SWF U8’S VS BURNHAM
This Sunday saw the U8’s play a
home game against Burnham.
We had enough players on both
sides that we split the teams in half
and had two games running to
allow the kids to have a well
needed runabout.
The growth in confidence and the
amount of ability they are showing
at such a young age is excellent.
Having 4 girls on our team is
actually rare for a club but it
certainly brings a different skill
when it comes to defence and
grabbing those tags!
As a coach, it is becoming exciting
seeing the joy these kids get with
every game.
The teams joined together after
for a well deserved post match
lunch in the club house.
Burnham bought a very good
team today which made the
matches a great challenge!

U14 Cobras U7 Wolves U12 Pumas
The Wolves continued their
successful campaign with a great
game v Hatfield Peveral. The
Hatfield keeper started well,
keeping the Wolves shots out of
goal. However, the Wolves
attack broke through and
continued throughout the
match. Today's scorers were
Tyler, Zach, Joseph, Jacob, &
Damon. MOTM to Joseph and
players player to James - well
done!
The Cobras continue to go about
their business, racking up
another win this weekend, with
a 3-0 win v Writtle Minors. The
boys showed some great
defending and were dangerous
going forward. MOM is Harry for
some excellent saves - well done
boys!
A depleted Pumas travelled to
Corringham Cosmos in today's
league cup match. Corringham
opened the scoring with a great
through ball. The Pumas
attacked but couldn’t get the
equaliser. The second half saw
further attacks from the Pumas
but they just couldn't break
down Corringham. In a great end
to end match Corringham came
out victors. The Pumas are flying
high in the league and continue
in the County Cup so a great
season ahead.
U7 Eagles
The Eagles put in their best performance of the season so far today, which ended in a narrow defeat to Maldon. The big
story was just how narrow the gap has closed v previous encounters. In an even game, Maldon opened the scoring with 2
great early goals. The Eagles then got what they deserved with the first of 3 goals from Max. Maldon extended their lead,
but the Eagle dug in. Every playing putting in a huge effort. Bog mention to Henry, who won coaches MOTM for a great
performance. The Eagles levelled the match with 2 further goals from Max to complete his hat-trick. A draw would have
been a fair result but despite some defending from Oliver and some great keeping from Harry, Maldon added 2 late goals.
The coaches and parents were extremely proud of the boys today and everyone enjoyed a great game - well done Eagles!
