YOU CAN TAKE CARE AND BE A
#WINTERHERO THIS SELF CARE WEEK
LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY
CHRISTMAS VARIETY
Health teams have got together with Livewell
Essex to create a set of messages to help us
help you this winter.
Self Care Week, which runs from 18 November to 24 November,
provides messages about how people can stay well, including
recognising early triggers and symptoms of illness and taking
action to prevent them getting worse.
Paula Wilkinson, Chief Pharmacist for NHS Mid Essex Clinical
Commissioning Group said: “By covering your nose and mouth
when it’s cold, particularly if you have COPD and Asthma, getting
your flu vaccine, or asking your pharmacist for advice at the first
sign of a cold or upset stomach, you can prevent worsening of your
long-term condition and avoid visits to the GP Practice.
“We are asking people to #BeAWinterHero and do things to help
themselves and people in their community. Essentially choose selfcare
for minor ailments and know where to get advice if you are
worried about you or someone in your community.”
The strapline for this year’s Self Care Week is ‘Think Self Care For
Life’ is all about making improvements in your life to protect your
physical health and mental wellbeing.
Clinical Commissioning Groups are promoting all the ways you can
self care including:
• Keeping a medicine cabinet with essentials like, remedies for
upset stomachs, rehydration powders, paracetamol and ibuprofen
and cold and flu remedies to see you through any ailments.
• Know how to prevent triggers for feeling unwell in the cold – like
wrapping a scarf around your nose and mouth to prevent cold air
from hitting the lungs.
• Getting your free flu jab if you are under 65 and living with a long
term condition, over 65, a carer, have children under 10.
• Making your pharmacist the first port of call for minor ailments if
you want advice or call 111.
• Eat well and live well, taking regular exercise and getting plenty
of rest.
• Keeping an eye on more vulnerable members in the community
and helping them get the right care if they seem cold or unwell or
even just popping in for chat to prevent loneliness.

The South Woodham Ferrers Local History
Society’s December meeting - being the
meeting closest to the Christmas break - takes
on a less formal format compared with the
society’s usual meetings, with contributions
from members wherever possible. The society
is fortunate to have members who also belong to South Essex Film
Makers and the evening will commence with a showing of one of their
films: a 16-minute film ‘Rayleigh Through the Millennium’ based on the
reminiscences of the town’s longest serving resident Ernie Lane -
otherwise known as ‘Mr Rayleigh’ - who moved to the town in 1920 and
celebrated his 100th birthday last year. And, yes, Ernie really does have
a lane in Rayleigh named after him!
This will be followed by another showing of the
Open University’s 25-minute film ‘A Community
by Design’. Part of an OU design course, first
aired in 1983, this examines the design origins
of South Woodham Ferrers and the reasoning
behind Essex County Council’s innovative
Design Guide for Residential Areas which underpinned so much of what
has been built here. The film has many recognisable shots of the
developing town and includes interviews with key players including
architects and builders.
Following a break for festive fare, including
mince pies, the rest of the evening will be
3&
occupied by another of the society’s popular –
and very informal - local history quizzes that
will again draw on archive photographs to
provide visual ‘teasers’ from our town’s past.
This quiz will cover South Woodham Ferrers and the wider Essex context
and will feature multi-choice answers - thus giving even those with
perhaps only a cursory knowledge of the subject the opportunity to make
a reasonable guess at the answers! No teams necessary – individuals
welcome.
The meeting will be held on Wednesday 4th December at Champions
Manor Hall, Hullbridge Road CM3 5LJ and will start at 8.00 pm. Visitors
are welcome to attend (£3 admission).

Christmas at Broomfield Hospital promises to be bigger and better
this year as we hold our first ever present drop on Saturday 7th
December.
If you’d like to make a donation to the hospital, come along to the
main hospital atrium from 10am – 2pm and get into the Christmas
spirit.
At midday, the motorcycling Santas of the Dengie and South Essex
Bikers will be arriving from Burnham-on-Crouch to donate toys to
Phoenix children’s ward, and at 2pm the fantastic Funky Voices choir
will be here to entertain everyone with renditions of festive favourites.
Nobody wants to be away from home for Christmas and some patients
may not have families to visit them. By purchasing a present for
someone spending Christmas in hospital, you can help spread cheer
and bring smiles to faces on Christmas morning.
If you want to give something to a ward or department at Broomfield
but are not sure what to buy, this year we are asking for gifts for our
elderly patients. Washbags and toiletries, puzzle and colouring books,
and socks would all be perfect presents for our senior citizens.
If you’d prefer to purchase something for patients on our children’s
wards, any PG or U-rated DVDs, colouring books or infant
development toys would be gratefully received.
Charlotte Jefcoate, fundraising coordinator for Mid Essex Hospitals
Charity, said: “Every year we receive wonderful donations from
individuals, businesses and our community of fundraisers. I’d like to
invite everyone who is thinking about giving to the hospital along on
the first Saturday in December.
“The charity team and the Friends at Broomfield will be in the atrium,
so please pop in, say hello, and help make a patient’s Christmas.”
Are you planning to make a donation to Broomfield Hospital this
Christmas? Please contact fundraising@meht.nhs.uk and we’ll help you
spread some magic.

South Woodham Flower Club
I was so lucky to win this gorgeous arrangement of beautiful red roses at our last meeting held on
14th November. Gill McGregor was our demonstrator. She used a wonderful array of exciting flowers
and created some very inspiring christmas designs.
If you are interested in flowers and flower arranging and would like to have the chance to win a lovely
arrangement then why not join us.
Our next meeting is on Thursday, 12th December at the WI Hall in Guys Farm Road at 8.00 pm. We
are always pleased to welcome visitors and new members. I hope to see you there!

This Saturday (30th

The PowerPoint presentation

Saturday. Both of the previous
presentations have sparked
lively debates about how the
pictures show our town in a
slightly different way to the
way we see it from the

quizzed about how he
managed to fly the plane and
take photographs at the same

South Woodham Ferrers WI November Report
It is with great sadness that we learned of the passing of our loyal member, Viv Porth. She] had been suffering, without complaining,
for a long time and managed to attend as many of our meetings as she could. She will be greatly missed. We held a minute’s silence
to remember Viv.
After the usual business, read by Hazel in Margaret’s absence, Shirley reminded us of the upcoming outings she has arranged. We
are going to Beth Chatto’s Christmas Fair at the end of November with lunch at The Rose Tree Tea Room at Dedham afterwards.
We are also looking forward to our After-Christmas Lunch at Scrimshaws in January.
The Speaker this month was John Watkins who gave a very interesting talk on ‘The Reflections of Nature’. He is a professional
photographer and showed lots of beautiful wildlife slides. He has travelled extensively and always has his camera with him. The
presentation was expertly put together with music to accompany the slides and our ladies really enjoyed the afternoon.
Unfortunately, we were told that John is retiring from presenting his talks which is a great shame as we haven’t heard them all.
The afternoon ended with Pat’s Quiz and a Raffle and delicious cakes, courtesy of Sylvia and Susan. Thank you very much for those
and for making the tea.
Our Christmas Coffee Morning was held on Friday the 22nd of November and we welcomed visitors as well as our own members.
Our advert in Focus always works! There were plenty of handmade Christmas cards (and birthday cards for those of us who have
birthdays in December!) made by the Craft Club. These sold very well, so thank you ladies.
We welcomed ladies from other organisations as well as our own members. It was a very successful morning and got everyone in
the Christmas ‘Spirit’ although we only served teas and coffees!
It’s hard to believe we only have two more Craft Club afternoons before Christmas i.e. the 26th of November and the 10th of
December. We meet in the WI Hall from 1.30pm until 4.00 and anyone is welcome to come along.
Thank you very much to Claire who put some lovely knitting patterns for toys through our letterbox. They were very well received
by our ladies and much appreciated.
South Woodham WI members please note that our Christmas Party on the 18th of December will start early with lunch at 1.00pm.
#WARMMALDON 2019 LAUNCHES
Most of us are lucky enough to have a warm coat to wear when
the weather gets colder and to be able to turn the heating up.
However, this isn’t the case for many families in the District.
This year a partnership of organisations has come together to
deliver a programme of events and initiatives focused on
supporting the more vulnerable residents in the District to keep
warm.
Maldon CVS, Maldon District Council, United In Kind, Maldon
Citizen’s Advice Bureau, Essex Child and Family Wellbeing Service
are working together on the programme. Some key activities that
will be happening over the next few months include:
Maldon Soup events which give grants to community projects that
support residents
#WarmMaldon coat rails will be dotted around the District for
anyone to donate warm coats and for those families who need
them to take them for free
(Maldon Library, United Reformed Church (Burnham-On-Crouch)
and Watership Downs Nursery)
Fuel vouchers will be issued to those families and individuals who
are identified as being in need and eligible for help to ensure that
they can heat their home over the cold periods
In addition, Maldon District Council is keen to know of any other
groups who are doing something to help those vulnerable
residents who may be at risk of being cold this winter. If you know
of any please use #WarmMaldon and mention or tweet us
(Facebook: Maldon District Council, Twitter: @MaldonDC).
Richard Holmes, Director of Service Delivery said “Cold weather
can seriously harm our health which is why it is so important that
these initiatives are taking place. If you start to feel unwell during
the winter, even if it is a cough or a cold, don’t wait until it gets
more serious. Seek advice from your pharmacist.”

HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL DAY
Chelmsford City Council supports the annual Holocaust Memorial
Day Commemoration organised by the Chelmsford Jewish
Community and would like to invite everyone to remember the
victims of the Holocaust during World War Two and other
genocides.
The commemoration event will be held on Thursday 30 January
2020 at 7pm in the Council Chamber located at Chelmsford City
Council, Civic Centre, Duke Street, Chelmsford, CM1 1JE.
Holocaust Memorial Day is the international day of remembrance
for the millions of victims killed in the Holocaust and other
genocides and is marked each year on the anniversary of the
liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau. 2020 marks the 75th anniversary,
and this is a significant milestone made particularly poignant by
the dwindling numbers of survivors who are able to share their
experience.
This year’s principal speaker will be Henri Obstfeld BEM; a
holocaust survivor who reveals the day-to-day fear and horror
experienced by those evading capture and persecution in Nazioccupied
Holland during the Second World War.
Chairman of Chelmsford Jewish Community, Stanley Keller said:
“The theme for this year’s Holocaust Memorial Day 2020 is ‘Stand
Together’. As we hear about the terrible experiences of Henri
Obstfeld in war-torn Holland, we must act on the theme to ensure
such atrocities are never repeated.”
‘Stand Together’, explores how genocidal regimes throughout
history have deliberately fractured societies by marginalising
certain groups, and how these tactics can be challenged by
individuals standing together with their neighbours and speaking
out against oppression.
This commemoration provides an opportunity to learn of and
reflect on many memories and to hear the testimony of Henri
Obstfeld.
Admission to the commemoration is free but must be booked in
advance. Places are limited, so please book early by calling 01245
606987 or online at www.chelmsford.gov.uk/holocaustmemorial.

Christmas Gift Appeal
CAN YOU HELP US?
The Church of England is here for everyone in the town. We
are your first port of call for Baptisms, Weddings and Funerals
even if you don’t attend church. We welcome you at Christmas
and Easter. We are always happy to be here for you – and we
would like to be here for generations to come. But all of these
wonderful services cost money, and in South Woodham Ferrers,
we are facing some challenges in this department. We need
your help. So, we are asking you to support us by giving a
Christmas gift to our church. If everyone residing in the town
donated just £1 per year, the Church of England’s presence
here would be secure.
On Saturday 7th December 2019 between 2 and 4pm the
church will be open to visitors and there will be people there
who will be happy to take your donation and show you around
Holy Trinity Church. You can have a chat with our Vicar, The
Reverend Carol Ball, and enjoy tea, coffee and mince pies.
If you would like to help us, or to book a Baptism or
Wedding for next year please do come along. If you can’t
make it on the day, please visit our website:
http://www.holytrinityswf.org.uk/anglican/ for other ways
to donate.
And may we take this opportunity to wish you a happy holy and
peaceful Christmas.

Response to Tired old Town
In praise of Asda Opticians
Over to
you...
For many years I have used a well known local opticians. My
prescription has always been complex due in part to having double
vision but after cataract surgery in both eyes they could not make
my new glasses correctly. I was without glasses for 5 months and
even after 5 attempts to make them they were no good. The cost
would have been £365 for lenses only (even though they were not
correct) or they had to be returned to the optical laboratory.
Obviously as they were no good they were returned leaving me still
without glasses. Over the years I have spent thousands of pounds
with them on glasses.
I have always been a believer in saying you get what you pay for. How
wrong I was. After being recommended to try Asda's opticians I
chose a cheap frame (which was more than adequate) thinking that
the lenses might not be all that good but they were absolutely
perfect at a cost of only £45 and I picked them up after only 1 week
(I normally have had to wait weeks if not months for them to be
made).
Well done Asda Opticians, you have done what I thought to be
impossible and I am so impressed.
From a very satisfied customer
Bluebell Homecare
I am my wife’s 24/7 carer and have been for many years. During this
time I’ve had many different care companies.
I’ve had carers come in to attend to my wife, who leave within 15
minutes, another fell asleep and another told me she “wasn’t here
to clean up mess”. I even had to show one carer how to maneouvre
a commode safely with my wife on it, because they didn’t know how.
I thought all care companies were alike until last year when I met a
care company called Bluebell Homecare, who genuinely really do
care. From day one my wife was treated with such love, care and
kindness; they were like family then, and continue to be so today.
Previously, when carers from the other companies came in to tend
to my wife I use to dread their visits; not knowing what would happen
next. That’s if they showed up at all. Now I look forward to the visits
from Bluebell Homecare.
Bluebell Homecare have certainly transformed my life and more
importantly that of my wife’s.
So, Bluebell Homecare, I would like to congratulate you on your all
green results from your first CQC inspection.
Sam and Sue, you are the best, you worked so hard to get this and
no one deserves it more. Also, not forgetting your caring staff, what
a fantastic team you have built.
I believe that everyone who requires care deserves to have the level
of expertise and compassion that Bluebell give all of their clients.
Why settle for third rate care when Bluebell can provide the best?
I also would like to reach out to any care workers who do not feel
like they are reaching their potential where they currently are, I know
that Sam and Sue will help you reach your true potential and give you
the job satisfaction you are looking for.
Finally, to all the Care staff that visit my wife Sylvia I would like to
thank you personally.
Roy Edhouse
I feel the need to respond to the letters in the 22nd November issue.
“Tired old Town” – Im sure many residents would agree on your
comments regarding Asda / their monopoly / the weary look of the
town centre. However, I find your remarks rather insulting that you
feel local people “constantly moan” and that they should find
something more valid to do. I believe residents have a right to voice
their opinions and I find the majority of views constructive (rather
than destructive).
I think the medical centre will be a good facility and its great to have
another supermarket but I totally agree with the repeated views on
bad planning, evidenced by a small inadequate surgery car park (only
6 disabled bays ??), lack of crossing facilities across a busy road and
I wonder whether the new road into Sainsburys will become clogged
by traffic causing a problem for patients trying to turn right out of
the surgery ........only time will tell.
A number of concerned residents have made a valiant effort to point
out these problems after taking the time to investigate situations
which could cause problems/accidents and I can only commend
them. I feel sad that after all their efforts little notice of their
observations seem to have been taken by the powers that be.
Kind People
Mrs L F Lawrence-Anderson
(local resident but only 4 years!)
I wish to express my sincere gratitude to all the wonderful caring
people who looked after me following my accident in Lettons Chase
on 4th November.
I was barely conscious during the one and half hour wait for an
ambulance but I'm told that there were several people there,
including one gentleman that arrived with his patio heater and
another with lamps!
After nine days in hospital I am now making good progress from
multiple facial fractures, spine fracture and a few other injuries.
It's reassuring to know that there are still so many good people
around, despite all the bad news we hear these days. So many thanks
again to all my neighbors and also to the delivery driver who was first
on the scene. Also thanks for the many get well messages from the
Woodham Group.
Ongoing Disquiet
John Cole
On Monday of last week I wrote that the Palace had taken steps
to keep Prince Andrew under wraps "for the foreseeable future."
On Wednesday last came the official announcement that he's
effectively going into hiding "for the foreseeable future" ... thereby
proving that the reliability of my Palace source.
I mentioned in last week's Focus that, because of the inadequacy
of the NHS communications machine during much of the run up to
the completion of the new Medical Centre, rumours have been
circulating that Prince Andrew had been commissioned at the
outset to plan and coordinate the task of winning over public
opinion in SWF. That said, I have a 'mole' with access to local NHS
financial info who informs me with certainty that no payment has
ever been made to Prince Andrew - which raises the suspicion of a
quid pro quo arrangement. So was our local 'communications'
team guilty of encouraging the Prince to agree to his 'car crash'
interview? Apart from the damage to the Monarchy resulting from
this rash decision we must ask ourselves if allocating health service
time and resources to such matters is a justifiable expense given
the pressure on the local NHS budget. Accordingly, I am calling for
a public enquiry.
Dr John

Dear Editor
Over to
you...
As I’m sure everyone will appreciate, all the GP Practices and NHS
people involved needed to make the decision about when to move
to the new Crouch Vale Medical Centre (CVMC) a few weeks
beforehand so all the removals and fittings could be planned and in
place for the opening. At that stage, in the context also of the
opening date for the new superstore, promises and assurances were
in place, as they had been for many months in advance, that all the
roadworks would be fully completed and crossings fully operational.
Also overflow parking in part of the superstore car park had been
promised would be available as it was known there would be extra
vehicles on site at the start with people setting up and delivering the
necessary support services in CVMC.
The fact those provisions were not in place when CVMC first opened
was through no fault of any NHS people. NHS representatives and
other key Town representatives made robust and relentless efforts
to get those things rectified, which they were by the end of the first
week. Everyone greatly regrets the difficulties those things caused.
All previous services provided at the old Merchant Street Health
Clinic have transferred and are now delivered at CVMC and that
includes the Diabetic Eye Screening. This is an occasional service
which is delivered in blocks in rotation between several locations so
people using this service have a choice to wait until the service is in
SWF or if they want or need a more urgent test they will be
signposted to the earliest appointments and told of the location.
Yours sincerely
Peter Blackman
Chair, SWF Health & Social Care Group
Welcome to Crouch Vale Medical Centre
The Crouch Vale Medical Centre has been open for two weeks.
During this time the Patient Participation Groups(PPGs) of the three
Practices have supplied volunteers to meet and greet patients. As
expected with a new venture there were a few hiccups to overcome
but the professionalism of the staff and the forbearance of the
patients has meant a successful start to the new venture.
During this fortnight we have learnt a lot about how the system works
and we can give some advice on best practice from a patient viewpoint.
1. Car parking- Remember that the staff are not responsible for
difficulties in parking. The PPGs and others advised that the parking
provision would be inadequate from the outset of the development
proposals. Hopefully the opening of Sainsburys will relieve the
pressure.
2. Access- Remember access problems are not the fault of the staff.
PPGs, South Woodham Ferrers Health and Social Care Group, the
Town Council and many others have been, and still are, constantly
lobbying the Highways authorities to try and ensure safe and
practical access.
3. Arriving at the Centre- When you enter through the two sets of
automatic doors you will have three options. If you have an
appointment with a service previously provided at the Town Centre
Clinic, turn right and go up the stairs or by lift to the upper floor
where you will be met and directed to the correct waiting area.
4. If you have an appointment for a service provided by a Practice,
book in using one of the two small screens on right hand side.
FOCUS
5. If you wish to make an appointment or to discuss any other
Practice service you need to talk to one of the three receptionists
straight in front of you. Sometimes you may need to join a small
queue but any of the receptionists can deal with your needs
regardless of the Practice with which you are registered.
6. After booking in - There is a large screen above the booking in
screens. When the health professional (doctor/nurse etc) is ready for
you, your name will appear on the big screen with the name of the
person you are seeing and the room number to go to. In some cases
the doctor or nurse may still come out into the reception area and
call you by name.
7. Repeat prescriptions - The pillar boxes in which you can place your
repeat prescription are situated in the foyer on the right hand side
before the second set of automatic doors so you do not have to enter
the reception area. You should be aware that there are alternative
ways of getting repeat prescriptions. You can get a form from the
receptionist to register for the arrangement to request your
medicines on line. The pharmacies are running a service whereby you
can take in your prescription request to them and they will deliver it
to the Practice for authorisation and onward fulfilment.
8. At time of writing the only service not available to patients is
blood tests previously provided at the Clinic. This service is under
review.
9. Practices continue to provide blood tests by appointment.
In conclusion the volunteer greeters would like to thank all the
patients for their consideration and understanding during this major
transitional period.

Message from Mid Essex CCG
The local NHS is grateful for the feedback from South Woodham
Ferrers residents in last week’s Focus about the opening of Crouch
Vale Medical Centre. We are very pleased that initial problems with
crossings and parking at the site have now been addressed – the
light-controlled crossings near the centre were operational within
days of the centre opening.
The three GP practices will be updating their websites next week with
a new version of the Frequently Asked Questions list about the
medical centre.
The practices, their patient participation groups, volunteers, staff at
Provide CIC, NHS commissioners and the IT supplier all deserve
thanks for their hard work to keep everything running smoothly
through the first week of opening. Most of all, though, we are grateful
to the people of South Woodham for your interest in the project and
for bearing with us during the wait for its opening and the transition
of the services into the new building.
We will continue to seek your feedback on local NHS services as we
are committed to working with you in developing them.

I have just came out of the new Health Centre, as I do not drive I had
to get a Bus, there is a shelter outside, but nothing to indicate its a
Bus stop, if it is a Bus shelter why is there no Bus stop sign and no
timetable to indicate Bus times?
There are a lot of elderly people in Woodham who do not drive, so if
they are coming out of the Health Centre they have no idea the times
of the Buses to get them home.

LIVING NEAR A BUSY ROAD CAN STUNT CHILDREN'S LUNG
GROWTH. The findings, contained in a report written by King’s
College London and released by a coalition of 15 health and
environment non-governmental organizations (NGOs), including
ClientEarth, the British Lung Foundation, and the UK Health
Alliance on Climate Change, shows that living within 50 metres of
a major road in may increase your risk of developing lung cancer
by up to 10%.
Kings tells us that: "The levels of recorded roadside air pollution
stunt lung growth in children by approximately 14% in Oxford, 13%
in London, 8% in Birmingham, 5% in Bristol, 5% in Liverpool, 3% in
Nottingham, and 4% in Southampton. One third (33%) of
Londoners - around 3 million people - are estimated to live near a
busy road. (1,2,3)
The new research shows an increased risk of cardiac arrest, heart
disease, stroke, lung cancer, bronchitis as well as reduced lung
function in children."
Dr Rob Hughes, Senior Fellow at the Clean Air Fund, said: “Air
pollution makes us, and especially our children, sick from cradle to
grave, but is often invisible. This impressive research makes this
public health crisis - which affects people all across the UK - visible,
and shows the urgency with which all political parties must
prioritise cleaning up our air.”
The health and environment groups involved are calling for all
political parties to commit to adopting a legally-binding target to
meet World Health Organisation (WHO) guidelines for particulate
matter pollution by 2030 and take steps to immediately reduce
illegal air pollution across the UK.
Even small towns such as SWF can benefit immensely from
measures to clean up the air - such as walking or cycling instead of
driving whenever possible, not leaving car engines running whilst
stationary, and keeping our fingers crossed that truly affordable
and practical electric cars will be widely available soon.

A TWICE-YEARLY JAB TO REPLACE STATINS? Statins are one of
the big success stories of modern medicine, protecting millions
from an untimely demise resulting from vascular catastrophes such
as heart attacks and strokes caused by the furring up of arteries.
They are not without their disadvantages, however - a major one
being that you have to take them every day.
For this reason the media outlets have exultantly reported the
merits of an injectable alternative following the early results of a
trial
The British Heart Foundation (BHF) takes a slightly more measured
approach - saying that the jab "shows promise."
Jennifer Mitchell gives the BHF's Party line: "A new gene silencing
drug could be used to lower ‘bad-cholesterol’ in the blood
according to new findings presented at the European Society of
Cardiology conference in Paris. Injection of the new drug, called
inclisiran, reduced cholesterol levels by around 50% in patients also
taking a maximum dose of a statin. Importantly, there was also an
associated reduction in heart attack and stroke in people taking
the drug.
Inclisiran is one of the first of a completely new class of medicines
(small interfering RNAs, known as gene silencing drugs) that can
block production of specific molecules for many months. Instead
of being taken in pill form they are given to patients as a single
injection under the skin.
Longer-term trials are now needed to confirm sustained clinical
benefit and to confirm safety, but these results are very
encouraging – and may point the way to a future where medicines
like Inclisiran replace statins.
Cholesterol is a fatty substance found in your blood. It's produced
naturally in the liver. Everyone has cholesterol. And we need it to
stay healthy because every cell in our body uses it. However, having
high levels of ‘bad’ (non-HDL) cholesterol can increase your risk of
heart and circulatory diseases such as heart attack, stroke and
vascular dementia.
Some people can effectively lower their cholesterol levels by
making lifestyle changes, such as improving their diet and exercise.
When this is unsuccessful, reducing cholesterol by taking a statin
daily is a highly effective way to reduce the risk of a heart attack
or stroke.
However, some people are unable to effectively lower their
cholesterol with statins, and it’s these patients who would benefit
from this new way of lowering cholesterol."
Professor Sir Nilesh Samani, Medical Director at the British Heart
Foundation said: “Lowering your LDL or ‘bad’ cholesterol is a key
goal in reducing your risk of suffering a heart attack or stroke. This
injection under the skin may be a safe and effective way of
delivering a gene-silencing drug that works on the liver to lower
LDL cholesterol. As it’s injected twice a year, some patients may
prefer to have this treatment rather than taking a pill every day.
More work is needed to prove the long-term safety of the drug,
but this could provide a significant advance in preventing heart and
circulatory disease.”

the SWAT team!” Greg Davies
MORE EXERCISE FOR TEENS. ABC News reports that "A vast
majority of adolescents around the world are not participating in
enough exercise, putting their current and future health at risk,
according to a new study. The study, conducted by researchers
from the World Health Organization and published in The Lancet
medical journal on Thursday, found that more than 80 percent of
children aged 11 to 17 worldwide did not meet current
recommendations of at least one hour of physical activity per day.
Researchers also found that girls were less active than boys in all
but four of the 146 countries studied.
The WHO recommends that adolescents engage in at least 60
minutes of “moderate to vigorous exercise” per day to promote
both healthy physical development and social skills. The benefits
of physical activity during adolescence include improved
cardiorespiratory health, muscular fitness and bone strength.
Existing evidence suggests that many of these benefits will
continue into adulthood, according to the WHO".
A widespread problem for 'the youth of today' is that 'screen time'
competes with 'activity time' - so perhaps we should attempt to
ration the use of devices such as mobile phones to, say, 12 hours a
day. "Easier said than done", I hear you cry, "Were you born
yesterday, mate?" OK, OK - I know - the point I'm making is simply
that South Woodham is blessed with an abundance of sports
facilities - so the opportunities are there for those who chose to
listen to the advice given by Dr WHO.

Who gets your vote?
Left or right? Stay or go? This
manifesto, that manifesto? The only
thing we can be certain about is that
things are uncertain. And it’s been
like that for a while. Sadly, I am
addicted to this unfolding saga – but
sometimes I have to take a break
from it all. Leaders of our world are
transitory figures, here one minute,
gone the next. Whether they have a positive or negative
impact, their time will be up, and a new figurehead will
emerge. Sunday was the feast of Christ the King. He is
not a transitory figure. He has been here since time began;
he will be here forever. What is his manifesto? Well no
need to plough through loads of figures and bar charts on
this one – it can be summed up in one word – Love. And
his manifesto is a two-way street. He promised us
salvation and he has done everything he promised. He
gave his life that we might live. Now, in return, he asks us
to practice love for Him and for each other. When things
go wrong, it is so often because we forget this. So
whatever decision you make in the coming weeks –
remember there is one leader with a proven track record
and an easy manifesto. Christ the King. And He gets my
vote.

SWF RUFC WEEKLY ROUNDUP
1st XV v Ipswich
South Woodham Ferrers
suffered another defeat
on the road this weekend
going down 52 points to
7 against Ipswich. This
was always going to be a
difficult game, but it was
made harder with several
first team players
unavailable for selection.
Nevertheless, the lads
played with heart and will
take some positives from
the game, despite the
score line.
The first half belonged to the home side and they took full
advantage of a Woodham side that had been put together with
very little time to prepare properly. Five trys in the first period put
Ipswich out of sight and it was clear that the mix and match
Woodham side was not going to get their first win on the road.
Playing for pride in the second half Woodham started brightly and
their attack began to bite into Ipswich’s defence. Sadly, it was the
home side that scored first, with a breakaway try and they followed
that up with two more scores to put the game beyond any doubt.
Woodham showed some real heart and despite the mounting score
against them, continued to hammer at the Ipswich defence. On
one visit they managed apply enough pressure to get two Ipswich
players sin binned as the defensive penalty count built against
them. Tate Holliday got the consolation try that Woodhams second
half effort deserved with Baker converting for the full seven.
Although the score looked alarming Assistant Coach Gareth
Harper was keen to point to the positives of the Woodham
performance. The line out and scrum held their own throughout
the game and the team played with real spirit. He was keen to
extend a special thanks to the second team players, including
debutant Kieran Coulson, who stepped into the breach and played
their hearts out.
Under 13 v Woodford
The game started off with hope that the team could pull off
another victory and the boys were in good spirits. Woodford made
a great start getting their first team try over the line within the first
6 minutes. SWF were not disheartened. The boys pushed and put
together some good passes but unfortunately lost the ball on the
ground. With some crushing tackles, Woodham eventually turned
the ball over again, and with great spirit, managed to get the ball
to BigJoe who did what the big man does. He pushed through the
Woodford defensive line to get the first Woodham try over the
line.
Woodfords defence was strong and their ability to rip the ball was
proving tough for the Woods to deal with. Woodford carried the
ball well and took the ball over for another try within minutes.
Some great tackling and passing from both sides saw the play
going back and forth up and down the field, but Woodford had
the advantage with a very well organized attacking line and
managed to push another 2 tries over before the halftime whistle
went up.
After a great team talk, and with some strong substitutions coming
on, the boys went out for the second half with renewed vigour.
With the likes of Hayden, Dan, Mitchell, Tom and Josh showing
Woodford that the Woods were a force to be reckoned with in
defence, as well as pushing forward, some unbelievable effort got
them close to the try line on a couple of occasions. Woodfords
winger then took the ball and ran through almost the entire team
and scored a very good individual try. Nathan made a couple of
fantastic runs, as did Dan, but Woodford were very strong in
defence and the boys just couldn’t penetrate. Mitchell made a
couple of amazing lunges for the line, with 3 or more Woodford
players hanging off him, leading to him unanimously winning the
golden (stinky) boot for his match long efforts.
Woodford scored again halfway through the second half with
another great solo effort from their winger, and the Woods knew
that they had lost this battle. They didn’t give up. The tackling
became a little untidy as the legs were wearing and a couple of
high tackles and one particularly dangerous tackle were noted. The
teams were asked to calm down and Woodham could see another
try coming their way. Re-enter BigJoe. Again, with his trademark
run, took the ball through the Woodford defence for the second
of the Woods tries for the day, bringing the final score to 30-10.
Under 12 v Chelmsford
Kenny B was off to a flying start today as the boys gave a
Chelmsford a warm welcome. Straight into tackling and ripping
the ball, Kenny B was straight into the Chelmsford’s attack.
Unfortunately, Woodham were caught napping and were swiftly
punished with a try from Chelmsford. This did not deter the boys,
though. Charlie and Dan tackled well and Kenny B tackled into
touch. Louis returned following his injury and put up a good
defence. Chelmsford’s defence was tough to breech. Following a
knock on from Chelmsford, the boys’ scrum was successful and
allowed Josh to make great gain before passing to Dan, who ran
in the equaliser. Just before half-time, Chelmsford bundled the
ball over the line from a penalty.
Chelmsford ran in three tries in quick succession – one from a
cracking interception. The Woodham boys did not give up –
crunching tries from Will and Josh. Felix ripped the ball
successfully and Jared made a great tackle. Chelmsford then ran
in two more tries before the Woodham boys began to fight back.
A great period of play began: great gain and tackles from Archie
led to good ground from Felix. Byron made a fantastic tackle.
Thomas got hold of the ball and led Chelmsford on a merry dance
with good pressure, finally leading to Kenny B going over for
Woodham’s second try. Straight from the kick-off, Kenny B
bulldozed through to score Woodham’s third. End of the first
game.
The second game was much closer. Josh and Will putting in quality
tackles before a passing breakdown allowed Chelmsford to score.
Kenny R showed great strength in his rucking today, Archie made
use of his strength to make good ground. Jack C played well in the
fullback position. The ball then became a hot potato and
Chelmsford took advantage running in another try. Jack B then
came on, providing more great tackles with Jake making up
ground. Josh gained a lot of ground before Kenny B went over
for his third try of the day. Following the restart, Kenny B
produced yet another amazing tackle and Josh tackled Chelmsford
into touch. Byron covered a lot of ground before Chelmsford stole
the ball to score. Kenny R made a good run with the ball before
passing to Archie. Chelmsford scored once more before the final
whistle.
Under 8 v Chelmsford
The U8s team had great numbers which meant them playing 2
matches (extra time rolling around in the mud!). They all played
exceptionally well today with some great passing, tagging and
showing improvement as well as really understanding the rules.
Special mention to Anthony who has shown a great improvement
in defence and to Will M for his hard work and always playing with
a smile!

BURNHAM & DISTRICT TABLE TENNIS LEAGUE
Woodham youngster Jenson Davis continues his
100% winning streak in Division 3.
Fambridge’s Liam Squirrell in hat-trick action against Woodham’s
Lee McHugh this week.
Luca Bailey of Woodham B –
back in action this week.
Division 1 – A League of Two Halves
As a gift from the god of fixtures we had the unusual situation of
the top 5 teams playing the bottom 5 in division one of the
Burnham & District Table Tennis League this week. A chance for a
few upsets perhaps, and a chance to close the gap? Unfortunately
the opportunity was wasted as the top sides all recorded
significant victories to widen that gulf even further. Even without
their talisman Cold Norton A came through the challenge of a
hearty Stow B for a table-topping 9-1 win – both Matt Stringer and
Sam Lowman came through unscathed. A strong Mapledene A
trio of Charles Sweeny, Steve Muth and Reece Seddon
whitewashed West Maldon B 10-0 to edge themselves into second
place. Fambridge are now up into 3rd place following a convincing
win over Woodham A – Fambridge have games in hand and the
matches against the other top sides will be key to any success they
have this year. For Fambridge Liam Squirrell was in fine fettle just
dropping 1 set all evening to Woodham’s Lee McHugh. The
returning Keith Adams also recorded a hat-trick but only after a
last gasp 5th set decider against McHugh. McHugh didn’t go
home empty handed as he defeated the consistent Mark Stones
in straight sets, and paired up with Daniel Piggott for the doubles.
West Maldon A rediscovered their mojo with the return of Dan
Young and Harry Keys, as they both recorded a full set of singles
victories and then paired up for the doubles, in their 8-2
destruction of West Maldon B. Finally in 5th place and hanging on
in there are Maldon A following their hard fought victory over Stow
A where the durability of their star players paid dividends as they
came through on top in all 3 five-setters to record a much needed
8-2 win. The old war horse Steve Whiteley was on top form
winning all 4 of his matches, whilst Stow’s Gary Brignall picked up
his teams two points.
Division 2 – Queen of the Night
In Division Two this week the top two teams battled it out with
Maldon B coming out on top courtesy of their doubles win over
Mapledene C. The final score was 6-4 with Maldon’s Colin Napper
the pick of the bunch. Despite Napper’s hat-trick most eyes would
have been on the all-female encounters as arguably the league’s
best 4 ladies were up against each other and putting down markers
for the league Singles competition in early 2020. Mapledene’s Lin
Roff emerged as the Queen of the Night with two excellent 3 set
victories over Maldon’s Dawn Baldry and Jan Fuller. Whilst
Mapledene C and Maldon B were playing out their top of the table
clash, Maldon C snuck in between them courtesy of a 7-3 win over
their D rated stablemates. Maldon C’s young starlet Thomas Page
was on top form winning all 4 of his matches, but the best
FOCUS
individual performance must have been Tom Elder’s final match
deciding set 14-12 victory over Brian Riedling – what a way to finish
the evening’s sport! The biggest scoreline of the week saw
Woodham B overcome Cold Norton C 8-2. Woodham’s Luca Bailey
is back from injury and despite his ring rustiness recorded a hattrick
in singles and partnered up with Ewan Hynd for the doubles
too – nice to see you, to see you nice. Cold Norton’s Terry Hyland
was on fine form with 2 singles victories and he was unlucky to lose
to Bailey when 9-7 up in the decider only to see his young
opponent pull out his best 4 shots to steal the POM from his grasp.
In the battle of the Hammers at Mayland this week Ralph Gibson
secured bragging rights with a 5 set victory over the division’s most
valuable player Tim Pulham of Stow C, Pulham went on to win his
other matches but this wasn’t enough to counteract the
consistency of the Mayland trio who recorded a 6-4 victory. Alan
Scammell continues to baffle the division 2 players as he recorded
yet another hat-trick with his awkward but very effective style. This
time it was Valerie Board and her Woodham C team-mates who
were in the firing line, however they took the Scammell on the chin
and fought back to earn the draw with everyone contributing to
the points tally.
Division 3 – Stowicide
Stow D are proving to be too consistent and too strong for this
division this year. They were ruthless and heartless in their
destruction of stablemates Stow F this week to strengthen their
top spot – almost a full whitewash, with only Anne Mills taking a
set off Jean Chasmer to obstruct the perfect score. A full house
for the Stow D regulars of Chasmer, Dave Goody and Peter
Chastin. West Maldon D must have thought their 9-1 victory over
St Lawrence B would help them close the gap – alas not! West
Maldon’s Noah Sage led the statistics and maintains his excellent
form this season. The most intriguing match-up was 14 year old
Jakob Mortensen pitting his wits against the leagues only
nonagenarian Dave Toe – would his 76 years of extra experience
help him through this match? Youth was the victor this time around
as young Jakob won in 4, 4 & 7. Woodham D continued their good
run of form with new youngster Jenson Davis maintaining his 100%
record so far, and matched by his captain and slightly older than
13 Mike Burton they created the platform for a 7-3 win over
Blackwater B. The St Lawrence A team bounced back from defeat
last week to record a 9-1 victory over Mayland B, and Maldon E
were able to overcome Burnham A 6-4 thanks to a singles clean
sweep from that old campaigner Roger Warren. Most impressively
Warren took the scalp of Michael Pratley – a rare occurrence.
