Thiswas always going to be adifficult game, but it wasmade harder with severalfirst team playersunavailable for selection.Nevertheless, the ladsplayed with heart and willtake some positives fromthe game, despite thescore line. The first half belonged to the home side and they took fulladvantage of a Woodham side that had been put together withvery little time to prepare properly. Five trys in the first period putIpswich out of sight and it was clear that the mix and matchWoodham side was not going to get their first win on the road.Playing for pride in the second half Woodham started brightly andtheir attack began to bite into Ipswich’s defence. Sadly, it was thehome side that scored first, with a breakaway try and they followedthat up with two more scores to put the game beyond any doubt.Woodham showed some real heart and despite the mounting scoreagainst them, continued to hammer at the Ipswich defence. Onone visit they managed apply enough pressure to get two Ipswichplayers sin binned as the defensive penalty count built againstthem. Tate Holliday got the consolation try that Woodhams secondhalf effort deserved with Baker converting for the full seven.Although the score looked alarming Assistant Coach GarethHarper was keen to point to the positives of the Woodhamperformance. The line out and scrum held their own throughoutthe game and the team played with real spirit. He was keen toextend a special thanks to the second team players, includingdebutant Kieran Coulson, who stepped into the breach and playedtheir hearts out.Under 13 v WoodfordThe game started off with hope that the team could pull offanother victory and the boys were in good spirits. Woodford madea great start getting their first team try over the line within the first6 minutes. SWF were not disheartened. The boys pushed and puttogether some good passes but unfortunately lost the ball on theground. With some crushing tackles, Woodham eventually turnedthe ball over again, and with great spirit, managed to get the ballto BigJoe who did what the big man does. He pushed through theWoodford defensive line to get the first Woodham try over theline.Woodfords defence was strong and their ability to rip the ball wasproving tough for the Woods to deal with. Woodford carried theball well and took the ball over for another try within minutes. Some great tackling and passing from both sides saw the playgoing back and forth up and down the field, but Woodford hadthe advantage with a very well organized attacking line andmanaged to push another 2 tries over before the halftime whistlewent up.After a great team talk, and with some strong substitutions comingon, the boys went out for the second half with renewed vigour. With the likes of Hayden, Dan, Mitchell, Tom and Josh showingWoodford that the Woods were a force to be reckoned with indefence, as well as pushing forward, some unbelievable effort gotthem close to the try line on a couple of occasions. Woodfordswinger then took the ball and ran through almost the entire teamand scored a very good individual try. Nathan made a couple offantastic runs, as did Dan, but Woodford were very strong indefence and the boys just couldn’t penetrate. Mitchell made acouple of amazing lunges for the line, with 3 or more Woodfordplayers hanging off him, leading to him unanimously winning thegolden (stinky) boot for his match long efforts.Woodford scored again halfway through the second half withanother great solo effort from their winger, and the Woods knewthat they had lost this battle. They didn’t give up. The tacklingbecame a little untidy as the legs were wearing and a couple ofhigh tackles and one particularly dangerous tackle were noted. Theteams were asked to calm down and Woodham could see anothertry coming their way. Re-enter BigJoe. Again, with his trademarkrun, took the ball through the Woodford defence for the secondof the Woods tries for the day, bringing the final score to 30-10.Under 12 v ChelmsfordKenny B was off to a flying start today as the boys gave aChelmsford a warm welcome.
