WARNING

TELEPHONE SCAM FOR FREE FLU JAB

As you may have seen on the Essex Live website today, a mid Essex

resident has been targeted by a telephone fraud that you may want

to use your networks to warn your fellow patients about. I have

contacted your practice managers about the matter separately and

the police are involved.

The scam involves a criminal telephoning an elderly patient to claim

their GP practice cannot administer their flu jab. The patient is told

they will have to attend a different practice and that there may be a

small charge for this. The criminal then asks for bank details to take

this charge – and removes a large sum from the patient’s account.

The scam may be sophisticated enough to affect telephone calls, as

the patient affected seems to have tried phoning her own practice

to confirm the change of venue, and in fact spoken to an accomplice

in the fraud.

We are putting a general message about telephone security on our

social media channels, which you are welcome to use if you wish:

If someone claiming to be from the NHS contacts you by phone and

asks for a payment, please be aware they could be a criminal trying

to trick you. NHS services are generally free at the point of use and

NHS professionals are very unlikely to ask for fees such as

prescription charges by phone.

Please remind family and friends not to share bank account details

or other financial information unless they are sure of who they are

talking to.

You are also welcome to share our tweet if your PPG or members

have a Twitter presence:

KIND OF BLUE AT THE BELL

The next performance of "Kind of Blue " will be in the hall of the

Bell, Woodham Ferrers, on Monday 28th October, 8.30-11 pm.

If you like the songs from "the Great American Songbook" and

other jazz "classics" played by a small group (quintet), then come

to your local pub and enjoy a "jazz club" atmosphere.

The move to the hall has been a real success, and we would like to

thank those of you who braved the rain and darkness to come to

our last September gig.

TRINITY ST MARY’S C OF E PRIMARY

SCHOOL HELD HARVEST FESTIVAL

Change of day

Following on from that, we have listened to some of our audience

who find it difficult to come out on dark wintry nights.

In 2020, at least while the clocks are on Greenwich meantime,

(January, February and March) we may move our gigs from Monday

to the last Sunday afternoon in the month, finishing before sunset.

Christmas arrangements

One "special" afternoon to put in your diary is Sunday, December

15th, when we will be organising our yearly Christmas mixture of

jazz and "singalong".

Entry by ticket, proceeds to breast cancer and Crohn's disease.

Details to follow.

But until then, please come to the Bell on the 28th.

You'll find a friendly welcome from the band and management.

Sandwiches and entry are free.

CROUCH VALE HEALTH CENTRE

The move to the new Crouch Vale Heath Centre is scheduled to

take place soon with a provisional opening date of Monday

November 4th but there have been so many delays don't be

surprised is there's another one.

Trinity St Mary’s C of E Primary School’s community came together

at their recent Harvest Festival service held in Holy Trinity Church.

The service was led by their Collective Worship Group. The

children spoke of the meaning of harvest and of how lucky they

are to have food, shelter and the community who cares for them.

The children also spoke about how important it is to think about

those who are not as fortunate as them and what they could do to

help. Rev Carol joined them for the service and gave the food and

congregation her blessing.

The children chose to support the Chelmsford/South Woodham

Ferrers Food Bank. Thank you to parents, carers and grandparents

for their generous donations.

Have Your Say on the Future Priorities of

Essex County Fire and Rescue Service

The Essex County Fire and Rescue Service have launched a public consultation that gives residents the chance to have

your say on how the future priorities of the Service are delivered.

The responses the Fire Service receive will enable the development of the 2019

Integrated Risk Management Plan (IRMP).

The risks and demands in Essex continue to change, which means that there is a need to regularly review the

priorities and activities so that the Fire Service can be more responsive to local needs.

The 2016 Integrated Risk Management Plan still has outstanding issues relating to the change of crewing status at

Dovercourt, Great Baddow, South Woodham Ferrers and Waltham Abbey from day crew (wholetime firefighters)

to on-call (firefighters who have everyday lives and jobs but respond to pagers when they are needed to attend

incidents).

If you would like to have your say on this very important public consultation please visit

www.essex-fire.gov.uk/irmp

A hard copy of the consultation is available by emailing irmp@essex-fire.gov.uk or calling 0300 303 0081.

If you would like to speak to personnel on the IRMP Team please call 0330 303 0082

The Salvation Army in South Woodham Ferrers

A THANKFUL HARVEST INDEED!

Many people joined together on Tuesday 1 October

at the Evangelical Church in Hullbridge Road, to

celebrate Harvest Thanksgiving with The Salvation

Army’s Tuesday Group – the Home League. The best

way of showing our appreciation for all we have in

our lives is to not only thank God for our situation,

but be practical in helping those around us.

Those who attended this special service certainly

showed love to others by the wonderful gifts of

food for the Gateway Food Bank held at The

Salvation Army’s community hall at Wickford, and

the amazing crafted and bought items presented for

the Mission Romania shoeboxes. This display of care

was furthered by the freewill offering of £139 made

following the pictures and commentary given by

Major Brian Miller who co-ordinates the team’s

personal visit to Romania for delivery of the

shoeboxes, clothing and food to those in poverty

known to the Salvation Army officers working there.

The service was led by Home League Secretary

Mary Parker, with Home League members

participating throughout. Two beautiful solos were

given by Maureen Rock, accompanied by Jill

Cuthbert (pianist for the afternoon), prayers offered

by Divisional Envoy Olive Anstead, and Daphne

Bilney read one of her own harvest poems.

Traditional harvest hymns were enjoyed by all and a

responsive Bible reading engaged the whole

congregation.

The whole afternoon concluded with refreshments,

and soon the complete display was packed ready for

its destination to Wickford and Romania.

Thanks are due to everyone who made such an

effort to make it a success; it was not only those who

were present, but so many people had already

contributed items of food or crafted items and

handed them in before the actual day.

Secretary Mary Parker brought a thought-provoking

final message based on the initials H.A.R.V.E.S.T.

which had been presented by Rita Slieker, Brenda

Neale, Mary Attrill, Pam Hart, Yvonne Whale and

Olive Anstead throughout the afternoon. We must

never forget God who provides all the gifts of the

earth for us to share.

As we approach winter days, we continue to meet

on a Tuesday afternoon at 2pm for our informal

gathering in the Evangelical church, to which anyone

is welcome, and we are preparing for services that

many of you would particularly like to attend. On

Tuesday 12 November, there will be a Remembrance

Service, and on Tuesday 3 December, there will be

our Annual Carol Service; a warm invitation is given

for each occasion.

Over to

you...

Widespread discontent?

The ‘Over to You’ letters were interesting last week – an irate resident

wrote that a year after the fire in Littlecroft “they once again attempt

to downgrade the fire station from full-time to 'on-call' – something

we did NOT vote for, nor want …”

new facilities included in the new health centre (such as an x-ray

facility etc.) but as soon became clear that this wasn’t going to come

about. There was a bigger surprise in store, however. It wasn’t made

clear to either the clinicians or the residents was that there was a

hidden agenda - the cunning plan was to close ALL the facilities in

the town centre. Even when we began to get wind of this, due to a

failure to have learned the lessons of history, I personally couldn’t

bring myself to believe they would go ahead with this plan in their

‘great and unmatched wisdom’ given that there was bound to be a

substantial and long-lasting public outcry. Had we fully woken up to

the magnitude of the knock-on effects of this decision in good time

I think the docs would have added a caveat to any contract signed

to the effect that this should only go ahead providing suitable

facilities were made available for the frail and elderly, those with

mobility problems, and those without transport etc. Mea culpa.

What we are getting ticks lots of boxes for ‘the powers that be’ in

this area - the pressure from the upper echelons of the NHS is for a

move towards a ‘bigger is better' primary care system. Refusal to

take note of the views of the residents, however, and failure to

incorporate them into a plan for SWF which works for all - including

the most vulnerable - is culpable.

The following letter started with the line: “I have made several

observations about the City Council and Essex and roadways in

recent times about the appalling treatment South Woodham Ferrers

is receiving but I’ve had absolutely no feedback or credible

justification for what is happening from them." This bears out the

observations of South Woodham’s resident ‘highwayman’, Alan

Brunning about his dealings with Essex Highways ... and gels with

the results of his ‘highways survey’ (published in Focus.)

Do I detect widespread discontent? My brief is to concentrate on

healthcare matters, however, so I was delighted to see that, in yet

another letter, the old chestnut about the reason for the location of

the new Medical Centre came up again. We were told: “The siting of

the new medical centre was a business decision by the town’s doctors

to move away from their customer base.” Unless I am very much

mistaken none of the doctors moving to the Crouch Vale Medical

Centre will make as much as a single penny out of the move – indeed

they are much more likely to lose money - so my advice to them is

that they should sack their 'business' adviser forthwith.

Given the continued confusion about the subject, let me explain

again how the South Woodham Ferrers GPs got involved. We were

approached by a chap called John Niland (from an organisation called

Provide.) His task was to interest us in the prospect of a new medical

centre – and it soon became clear that this was not going to be

anywhere near the centre of the town. The GPs nevertheless felt that

a new purpose-built facility would be a good idea given that South

Woodham had been constructed without any thought for medical

facilities - so they had sprung up in an unstructured way in the wake

of the development. What is more, the existing premises were

deemed to be no longer fit for purpose by the 'powers that be' (and

this remains the official position) - although patients were, by and

large, happy with them. Another consideration was that, following

the closure of two practices by 'the NHS', the remaining surgeries in

the town were much too small to accommodate the patients who

relied on their services. Moreover, it had also become clear over the

years that the NHS had neither the desire nor the ability to carry out

a scheme of the magnitude of the Crouch Vale Medical Centre itself

in SWF - it needed somebody else to do the job for it - so the

proposal on offer appeared to be the only way forward. When it

comes to medical services in SWF, because of the way we have been

treated in the past by both the NHS and Essex County Council, the

best we can realistically expect is 'the least worst option.'

That said, I (and I think others) naïvely believed that there would be

Getting back to the "business decision", let’s look at the balance

sheet for the GPs moving into the new premises. They will receive a

small grant which should cover part of the cost of the move. The IT

costs will be fully covered as this is now a fundamental requirement

- they won’t profit from this but nor will they lose out. However, unlike

the white elephant that was the New Surgery, (which was lavishly

fitted out at huge cost to the taxpayer) as far as I can make out the

rooms in the new facility will have ceiling-lights and sinks but little

else. The surgeries will have to provide their own

furniture/equipment, most of which is likely to be secondhand and

derived from what they have already (at their existing surgeries) and

what they can scrounge or purchase elsewhere. They will have to

cover some substantial costs themselves – such as the cost of a new

telephone system. No doubt there will also be maintenance/service

charges etc.

Maybe in a year's time the docs working in the new health centre can

give us an update on the costs involved in the move - any losses or

gains they have made as a consequence of their

"business decision" ... as, until then, I suspect this story will continue

to be recycled - irrespective of the costs borne by those working in

the Health Centre.

Another old chestnut that keeps reappearing, despite there having

been no hard evidence produced on which to base the claim, is that

the Crouch Vale Medical Centre is plenty big enough for the needs

of the town both now and in the future - bearing in mind the rapid

expansion of the town that has been proposed. A member of one of

the Patient Participation Groups (PPGs) - one of which is 'attached'

to each of the three practices in SWF - decided to try to get hold of

the facts by means of Freedom of Information Act (FoIA) requests.

This is not easy ... as those of you who have tried getting healthcare

info by this means will have found, it's like swimming through treacle

(as the NHS seems to think that it isn't subject to the Act.)

Here's the second attempt at getting an answer to a straightforward

question - and the response that was eventually forthcoming ...

Dear Mr Almadi

With regard to our request for the information you hold relating the

usable floor areas for the doctors surgery’s practising (and closed)

for South Woodham Ferrers and the town's Health Clinic, you replied

as follows on 13th September 2019:

continued over

FOCUS

Focus

Over to

you...

a letter published in Focus that purported to be from the Kelvedon

and Feering Health Centre (which was later republished, supposedly

under the auspices of the SWF practices) said: "How the clinic

premises will be used in future is still under discussion and there is

not yet a final decision." He went on to says that the PPGs had been

told in the past that the clinic would need to be mothballed for 2

years to ensure that it is surplus to requirements. He asked for clear

and unambiguous details of the decision - given that it must have

been made some time ago. Despite reminders he has yet to receive

a reply!

"Under section 21 of the Freedom of Information Act 2000, a public

authority does not have to provide information in response to a

request when that information is reasonably accessible to the

applicant by other means. The information with regard to Net

Internal Area (NIA) of commercial premises (GP Surgeries) can be

found for free on the District Valuation Office Agency (DVOA)

website, by following this link: https://www.gov.uk/correct-yourbusiness-rates"

We have looked at the website and have found that all the

operational health premises in SWF show a value of “not published

“ on the website. The only premises with an area value published

are:

Clements House. 160.00 m2/unit

The New Surgery (aka The Practice) 371.13 m2/unit

Can you please address this as soon as possible, as we do need this

information.

Here's the reply:

Please see below a response I have received from the team. I hope

this is helpful.

Floor areas for surgeries below (Nett Internal Area)

Anson Close – 99.77sqm

Brickfields Surgery - 283.60 sqm

Greenwoods Surgery - 408 sqm

Kingsway Surgery - 136.76sqm

GP demise in new Crouch Vale Medical Centre – approx.. 1,066sqm

Regards, Jimmy Allimadi, Freedom of Information. Admin, Email:

j.allimadi@nhs.net

So this question refers to the floor-space available before two of the

surgeries in SWF were closed and the patients were packed like

sardines into the remaining premises. My arithmetic is unreliable -

but I'm pretty sure that if you add the floor areas for the six surgeries

listed above you will arrive at a figure that is significantly greater than

the 1,066sqm we're told is available to the GPs and their staff in the

Crouch Vale Medical Centre.

There was also a FoIA question about advice received from "a

representative of NHS Property Services" that all new NHS facilities

must have a 25% patient growth capacity built into the original plans.

This is ongoing but hopefully there will be a bulletin soon.

Finally ... another PPG member wrote (following a discussion on 30

July 2019) to a representative of the NHS who has been closely

involved with the issues surrounding the new health facility

requesting clarification. The letter stated that the PPGs had been

told the Health Clinic would be put up for sale later in the year, but

The PPGs, which have distinguished themselves by tireless

campaigning on behalf of the patients they represent throughout

these turbulent times, are meeting shortly to decide on any further

course of action that is appropriate and will no doubt keep us posted.

Absurd Situation

Dr John

I should like to bring to your attention the absurd situation I find

myself in as a direct result of the closure of services prior to the

overall closure of The Clinic in the town centre.

Since my retirement four years ago I have used the local clinic blood

test service, as I have to have at least four blood tests a year as a

part of my ongoing treatment for a chronic medical condition. Living

in South Woodham it is obviously very convenient and makes good

sense to use the Clinic, but I am now told blood tests are no longer

available at the Clinic. I am also informed this service will not be

available at the new Health Centre. This means I now have to drive

to either St. Peters at Maldon, where parking is horrendous, or

Broomfield Hospital where the queues can easily exceed two hours

plus equally horrendous parking problems.

This morning I went to St. Peters, a twenty mile round trip taking one

hour and forty minutes including a forty-five minute wait for the two

minute blood test.

We are constantly told to reduce our carbon footprint in the news

everyday and yet “the powers that be” are not only causing us more

expense in transportation costs but are forcing us to actually increase

pollution by making us go much further distances to obtain this

necessary procedure. Where is the common sense in that? It is

particularly apparent when referring to the new town Health Centre

that logic and common sense are the last considerations in the minds

of these so called “planners.” Maybe the activists of Extinction

Rebellion should be camping out on “the planners” doorsteps to

make our feelings known.

Thank you

BECOMING AN ON-CALL FIREFIGHTER AT 18: HARRY'S STORY

MEET SOUTH WOODHAM FERRER’S NEWEST ON-CALL FIREFIGHTER

At 18-years-old, Harry might be one of Essex County Fire and Rescue Service’s (ECFRS) youngest on-call firefighters, but with the level

of dedication to training and community safety he demonstrates, you’d be forgiven for thinking he’s been in the role far longer.

Earlier this year Harry, who used to live in Maldon but recently moved to South Woodham Ferrers, started training to become an on-call

firefighter.

"Being a young driver and motorcyclist, I form part of Essex’s high risk group for road traffic incidents. This is one of the reasons I wanted

to be a firefighter, not only to give back to the public services, but to contribute to the safety of my friends, family and other people in

Essex,” said Harry.

Providing on-call fire cover during the day and evenings is easy for Harry - he lives and works within 5 minutes of South Woodham Ferrers

Fire Station so when his pager sounds he can immediately make his way to the fire station to attend anything from a road traffic collision

to a field fire or even a chemical spill.

Harry is paid for the time he is available to work, regardless of whether he is called out and is also paid an additional hourly rate for

attending incidents and training. The amount on-call firefighters depends on their availability but they can earn anywhere between £4,000

and £8,000 a year, sometimes more.

Just like all new on-call firefighter recruits, Harry initially passed a fitness test and an assessment day and then spent two full weeks

training at ECFRS's Service Training Centres, followed by 10 weekly evening training sessions.

"The training covers everything from ladders and hoses to road traffic collisions, and everyone on your squad is new like you,” said Harry.

“My advice to anyone thinking about becoming an on-call firefighter is to do your research on the job and the commitment you’ll need

to give. But don’t overstress on things, the Service has fantastic training team who will work with you throughout every part of the

process.”

"It’s a really great feeling to know I’ll be supporting the local community and helping to make Essex a safe place to live, work and travel."

Could you be an on-call firefighter? If you're aged 18 or over, live or work within 5 minutes South Woodham Ferrers Fire Station and are

physically fit you could be paid to protect your local community.

South Woodham Ferres Fire Station began its week-long recruitment information week on Monday 14 October and has daily events

running until Friday 18 October. To find out more visit www.essex-fire.gov.uk/swf

We’ve also recently created a South Woodham Ferrers Facebook page – make sure you give us a like to keep up to date on news and

events from the station: https://www.facebook.com/SouthWoodhamFerrersFireStation/

WHAT GOES AROUND COMES AROUND: In the bad old days, those who

could afford it paid others to breast feed their children for them. "Wet

nursing is an ancient practice, common to many cultures" says Wikipedia

... adding: "It has been linked to social class, where monarchies, the

aristocracy, nobility or upper classes had their children wet-nursed for the

benefit of the child's health, and sometimes in the hope of becoming

pregnant again quickly. Wet-nursing was a well-paid, respectable and

popular job for many lower class women in England. In 17th- and 18thcentury

England, a woman would earn more money as a wet nurse than

her husband could as a labourer."

In recent times the emphasis changed to donated milk. When my wife,

Sue, was feeding her first baby (Laura) she regularly donated milk to the

maternity hospital in Mill Rd, Cambridge. It was very laid back in those

days - a midwife brought round a bottle, the nursing Mum filled it up, and

in next to no time a needy baby was being fed the perfect 'formula' for

tiny humans ... one that contains an abundance of immunoglobulins to help

protect them.

On Monday night 'Look East' shone the light of publicity on the work of

'The Human Milk Foundation' ... which takes up the story. "In the UK, milk

banks used to exist in every hospital that delivered babies. After the 1980s,

a combination of funding constraints and the discovery of HIV meant that

only six milk banks that had equipment to heat-treat the milk remained.

Even now, only a handful of NHS milk banks exist in England and Wales,

meaning donor milk has been a precious resource rationed to the most

sick, premature babies.

We believe a new approach is possible. One of the primary objectives of

the Human Milk Foundation is to enable infants to receive human milk

when breastfeeding is impossible for medical or practical reasons. We also

aim to support exclusive breastfeeding and breastmilk feeding for parents

who have not yet fully established their breastmilk supply and for whom

supplemental feeding of their baby has been recommended by a

healthcare professional."

The Human Milk Foundation's vision is to work to help more families feed

their babies with human milk. It provides screened donor milk to sick,

premature babies in NICUs, and to mothers with cancer and other

conditions. The screening has to be of the highest order these days to

meet NICE guidelines ... which makes it safe but adds greatly to the cost

- hence the foundation's greatest need is for fundraisers. For further details

“My father drank so heavily, when he blew on the birthday cake he lit the

candles.” – Les Dawson.

GOING OUT WITH A BANG. The Telegraph reported that "The country's

departing chief medical officer has said she would favour a ban on

flavoured e-cigarettes, in line with actions planned in the United States.

Prof Dame Sally Davies, who has just stood down, spoke out amid growing

concern about the promotion of candy-like flavours which could attract

children to vaping." As for the overall picture ... Public Health England has

championed the role of e-cigarettes, which it claims are 95 per cent safer

than smoking.

What caused the biggest stir, however, was the mention of eating on buses

and trains. Sarah Boseley, The Guardian's Health Editor, wrote: "The

government should put children’s health before companies’ profits, says

the outgoing chief medical officer in a hard-hitting report calling for tough

action against junk food, including a ban on eating and drinking on public

transport, to tackle obesity. Dame Sally Davies, in her final report as CMO

for England, said: 'Today’s children are drowning in a flood of unhealthy

food and drink options, compounded by insufficient opportunities for

being active. It’s the right of children to live in a healthy environment and

with proper nutrition. What we’ve done to date has not stopped the

problem.'"

Ten in every 30 primary school children are now overweight or obese. Each

week the equivalent of 13 school buses of children are admitted to hospital

for tooth extraction under general anaesthetic because of decay caused

by sugar, she said, adding: “That’s damaging children, costing the NHS.”

In later life it leads to heart disease, cancer and type 2 diabetes.

SB tells us that "The report said England was “nowhere near” the

government’s goal of halving childhood obesity by 2030. It proposes a

lengthy list of radical taxation, legislative and other changes."

In this part of the world Dame Sally is up against the planners who seem

to think that what this town needs is more fast food outlets.

“A good rule to remember for life is that when it comes to plastic surgery

and sushi, never be attracted by a bargain.” - Graham Norton

THE STATE OF THE NATION'S HEALTH SERVICE. The Nursing Times

reports that: "In its latest annual assessment of health and social care in

England, the Care Quality Commission highlighted that 14 independent

mental health hospitals that admit people with a learning disability and/or

autism had been rated “inadequate” and gone into special measures since

October last year. Overall, the number of inpatient services for people with

these conditions tagged with the lowest rating had increased by nine

percentage points, from 1% in 2017-18 to 10% in 2018-19. Meanwhile, 7%

of child and adolescent mental health inpatient services were rated

“inadequate”, up from 3% in 2017-18."

The NT points out that: "They said difficulties recruiting nurses specialising

in these areas meant vulnerable patients were too often being cared for

by staff who lacked the skills and expertise to meet their needs."

As for A&E, it's the bad news that made the headlines although a national

patient survey says 80% report a good A&E experience (but there are still

problems with patient discharge and people waiting too long for pain

relief.)

Having said that, the BBC reports: "Half of A&Es in England are not good

enough - and there are no guarantees services will get better despite the

extra money going into the NHS, the regulator says. The Care Quality

Commission said people were turning to A&E in a crisis because of a lack

of support in the community. It said services would remain under pressure

until a funding solution was found for social care."

We're told that: "Analysis by BBC Newsnight and the Nuffield Trust found

an average of 86% of patients were admitted, transferred or discharged

from A&E within four hours in the six months to September. This is the

worst performance in that period since the 95% target was brought in in

2004. NHS England said it had been "the busiest ever summer" for A&Es.

"In the past six months, there have been half a million more visits to A&E

than at the same point last year," a spokesman said. Doctors warned that

the system was "running out of resilience" and that winter in A&Es was

going to be "really difficult".

Growing demand and staff shortages are causing problems across the

national health service and A&E is left to pick up the pieces. Patients

attending inappropriately take up acres of staff time and waste £millions

of NHS resources

So ... as we approach winter, what can you do to help? The first point to

make is please don't go to A&E unless it's really necessary (i.e. is it an

accident meriting hospital treatment or a genuine emergency?) Back in

2010 A single visit to A&E was estimated to cost £124 (just to be seen) and

it's bound to have risen since then.

Patients are also being advised not to call an ambulance unless it's really

necessary. In 2015 The Guardian reported: "The London ambulance service

says each patient costs on average £7.81 per 999 call. To be further

reviewed on the telephone by a clinician costs £64.59, to receive an

ambulance and be treated at home is £155.30, and to receive an ambulance

and be taken to hospital costs £254.57." Perhaps more important is the

fact that, if ambulances are called needlessly (as happens surprisingly often)

it has the potential to hold them up at times when they are needed for

heart attack victims, serious road traffic accidents and the like.

What can the NHS do? It can start by strengthening general practice . The

way primary care has been dealt with in SWF in the past has been

scandalous but there is hope that things will improve here - so let's hope

that the NHS in South Woodham eventually gets its fair share of the NHS

cake.

There are also plans to support GPs by increasing use of the allied

professions - and, if well managed, this could take some of the strain off

'the system.'

What else needs to be done? Social care is an ongoing problem and it

needs to be addressed as its impact on the NHS is considerable.

Keeping the NHS going is a joint effort - if we don't all pull together it will

go under.

LIFE SAVING ROLE FOR AN OLD DRUG: There's an interesting paper in

The Lancet which features a drug that has been around for many years and

has been widely used in general practice for conditions such as heavy

periods. Its cause called tranexamic acid and has also been used maternity

units for e.g. postpartum haemorrhage.

In recent years it has been in emergency departments for conditions such

as stab wounds - and in suitable cases it can stop patients bleeding to

death. A new study has shown it's ability to arrest bleeding makes it very

effective in reduction of deaths from head injuries – it is most effective

when given to patients with moderate injuries (and, needless to say, least

effective patients with severe head injuries).

The fact that it is a tried and trusted medication means that it's available

for use now - the BBC reports that it can potentially save hundreds of

thousands of lives a year worldwide if it's routinely given to people brought

into hospital with head injuries - so let's end on that bit of good news!

Weekly News and Results Roundup

U15 Phoenix v Benfleet Villa

SWFU were under the cosh in the

first half, at one stage finding

Benfleet shooting for fun and

capitalising on their possession to

lead 4-0 at the break. With nothing

to lose in the second half, we piled

on the pressure: Josh forced two

saves, Jack impressed down the

wing and Callum F and Samuel dug

in defensively. A further goal when

the team struggled to clear the ball

was quickly countered by clinical

finishing from Jack to put the score

at 5-1, with Matthew showing

composure to save a penalty to

leave Phoenix heads held high.

U10 Ravens v Woodham Radars

A fantastic display from both

teams saw the first meeting of

the towns U10 girls teams result

in a draw. Following a brilliant

goal from Millie Radars battled

back to earn the draw. A great

result for both teams - well done

girls!

U7 Eagles v U7 Wolves - Derby games don't get anymore local than this!

Once again we saw two of our teams competing against each other in league action. The Wolves, who have been together

longer than the Eagles showed this with slick play and well worked goals. The Eagles coaches asked their players to give

maximum effort and they certainly did that! Elliot was awsome in defence today, making great tackles and clearances. Noah

was fantastic in goal, making some excellent saves. Today's captain, Max, followed some great tackling and running by

scoring the Eagles goal. Seb and Ralph made some great tackles and clearances. George, Bobby, and Henry are improving

every week, with some great play. Bobby was unlucky not to score. Arthur also made some great tackles. Our coaches and

parents are extremely proud of every player and we love seeing them all smile when they are playing - well done to both

teams today!

SWF RFC U10'S TRAINING

Training on Sunday 13th was physical,

fun and energy sapping.

We did a quick HIT warm-up followed

by some passing skills. Then it was back

to the new elements of the game this

year - rucking and mauling.

We've a good record of ripping the ball

from other teams in the tackle and

maul, but also need to tidy up our

presentation and rucking skills.

The effort of this was telling on the

players. So much so when we did our

knot's and crosses game our thinking and decision making wasn't as clear

as normal.

Great to see the intensity going up week on week, and the enjoyment of

the game.

Our warm-down was more hunt and rip - physical and fun.

We are always looking to grow the squad. Please contact Gerry on 07880

498565 if your U10 or someone you know is interested in playing a great

Team game that helps to develop :

Physical Health, Social Skills, Life lessons, understanding the benefit of

working hard, Making Friends, Positive Role Models, Respect for yourself

and others.

THREE RIVERS GOLF CLUB LADIES SECTION

CAPTAINS DRIVE IN

On Monday 7th October, we held the Drive In for our new lady Captain, Jo Stentiford. In keeping with our usual tradition, a theme

relating to the Captain was chosen, and as Jo is the mother of 3 small boys, a theme relating to children was chosen with particular

reference to Matilda and Harry Potter. Our new Vice Captain, Jane Hatfield and members of the Committee dressed Jo up as Miss

Trunchbull from Matilda and following the putt out from Sharon Warrington the outgoing Captain, Jo drove in as can be seen in the

photo attached. Our lady members also dressed up in accordance with the theme and the second photo attached shows some of them

in their costumes.

An 18 hole competition followed the Drive In, which was won by Ruth Collins, Dolly Wilson and Sue Soar. The is proved to be a very

enjoyable day which finished with a meal and prizegiving in the Clubhouse.

WOODHAM’S EWAN HYND IN DEBUT DIVISION 1 VICTORY

Burnham League Division 1

Woodham A 4-6 Mapledene B

Burnham League Division 2

Woodham B 7-3 Blackwater A

West Maldon C 6-4 Woodham C

It was a week for noticeable victories for the young talent coming

through the ranks of South Woodham’s table tennis Club. 13 year

old Ewan Hynd was the player of the match for the C team in their

close loss at West Maldon, but Ewan defeated one of the best

players in that division 3-0 and was duly called up for the A team

when a space became available.

Ewan was incredible in his debut making each of his opposition

work very hard – and he even secured one victory with a nail biting

deciding set 13-11 victory. For the B team in Division 2 another

great 13 year old talent was on show - Ben Porter scored two good

victories to help his team to victory.

In addition to Ewan’s one win for the A team in Division 1, Dan

Piggott won 2 singles and was unlucky in his third match to go

down in a tight deciding leg. The final point was racked up by

Cameron Gray on his season debut.

In Division 2 Alan Dadswell completed the scoring for the C team

with a creditable brace of wins to add to Ewan’s 2 wins. The B

team have struggled for a consistent team so far however they

now sit top of Division 2 after 3 rounds courtesy of the 7-3 home

win against Blackwater. Blackwater have the most awkward player

in this division and it was his skill that stopped the B team from

recording an even higher score as he defeated all 3 Woodham

players – but in turn Allan Steel, Eamonn Hall and the

aforementioned Ben Porter won every other match to secure the

points.
