Weekly News and Results Roundup

U15 Phoenix - Thank you to Clare for a fantastic report!

On a bright November Sunday morn, an old man sits a while

Looking through old photographs, he can’t help but smile

They’re all there, all the boys, with hair cut short and neat

Uniforms of red, multi-coloured boots upon their feet.

An impeccably observed two minute silence was followed by a

radically different SWFU Under 15 Phoenix this week: a far more

confident approach, a more careful passing performance and a

determination not to concede as readily they had done in recent

weeks. In the glorious Rettendon sunshine, perhaps the thoughts that

went through the boys’ minds as they stood together.

They met as strangers but soon became like brothers to the end

Smiling at the camera, there could be no truer friends.

The old man’s eyes mist with tears as he remembers every face

Each of his Phoenix brothers and the matches which took place.

Given the date, the details of the game seem almost trivial: None of

the boys will remember the score, but what they will hopefully recall is

the sense of camaraderie and positive spirit which abounded today

with their Phoenix family.

I wish that I could tell the man that he should fear not

This soldier and his brothers will never be forgot.

We owe a debt of gratitude that we can never pay

Our country will remember them, on each Remembrance Day.

(Poem based on the work of Maria Cassee)
