It’s been few years since my university days, but I still remember the stress and anxiety I had before taking my exams. Don’t get me wrong, a little stress and anxiety before an exam or test can be a good thing because it can help keep you focused and motivated to do the work that needs to be done. But too much can lead to feeling overwhelmed, panicked and potentially underachieving in the exam. So here are a few tips to help you manage any stress or anxiety you may have relating to any work, school or university exams or assessments: BREATHING: A good breathing technique like 7/11 (see my blog post ‘How to Deal with Anxiety’ for further details) is worth its weight in gold when it comes to helping you relax because it induces the bodies relaxation response and it’s so discreet, it can be done almost anywhere. REGULAR BREAKS: Take regular breaks, you wont be as efficient if you revise or work for hours on end. Generally, studying in roughlyone hour blocks is suggested to be the most effective way of working, then take a break. EXERCISE REGULARLY: Exercising releases various important hormones, such as serotonin, dopamine and norepinephrine, all of which contribute towards helping you stay focused, keeping your energy levels and mood up, and keeping your stress levels down. SLEEP: The benefits of getting a good quality night’s sleep are numerous, but not getting enough sleep can have a negative effect on your memory as well as increase your stress levels, so try and avoid those ‘all nighters’ and get a good nights sleep. REMEMBER: Exam success isn’t just about being knowledgeable and knowing the right material; your state of mind also plays a big part. Having the ability to stay calm, relaxed, confident and focused can all play a vital role in helping you achieve your full potential.
