President’s Message from Dorothe Fair
Beautiful, gentle Spring!! Flowers in the gardens. Longer,
warmer evenings and sunny days at last!! The gateway
to the Canadian summer we patiently wait for during
our long winter season.
All the outdoor Activity Groups are underway, including our new
casual Cycling Group. Please check out the Cycling Group in this
Sentinel for more information. This is a great reason to get your bike
out and enjoy the trails throughout our City and along the river paths
with other seniors. If biking isn't for you, please consider joining one
of the other outdoor groups, like Golf, Canoeing, Photography and
Walking. All the details for each group are in the Sentinel or on our
website.
PLEASE REMEMBER: The Evergreen Building is closed to all Activity
Groups from July 2nd for parking lot improvements and reopens
on Tuesday, August 7th.
GWSA activities that don't take place at the Evergreen Building
(golf, walking, canoeing, photography and cycling) will be unaffected
by the closure of the Evergreen building.
Before sharing the May calendar, I want to give a shout out to various
volunteers and members who made April an incredible month of
special events.
1. MANON GERMAIN, Chair of the "Age Friendly Guelph Leadership
Team" (AFGLT), accepted an award from the Minister of Senior
Affairs on behalf of the committee. The ceremony was held in Toronto
at the Sheraton Hotel. Guelph was recognized for "its strong
commitment to key principles for creating an age-friendly community,
including engagement with Guelph's Seniors, collaboration with a
diversity of community partners, and significant impact on the local
community". I was fortunate to be invited as a member of the AF-
GLT and as a representative of the GWSA. Great work Manon and
committee members!!
2. Nelli Jagt and I attended a Town Hall meeting on Guelph Transit
hosted by Mayor Cam Guthrie and Councillors Phil Alt and June
Hofland. The topic was 'what do the citizens think could make the
transit service better'. Almost 100 people attended and Nellie let the
Mayor and Councillors know very clearly that Seniors need more
Mobility and Community buses to give Seniors their independence
back. They need to go shopping for groceries, or to medical, banking
or other appointments such as hearing, dental and Sunday places of
worship. Community buses should return to picking up Seniors at the
front door of their complex as many Seniors can't navigate the side-
