(6 mile Hilly Road Race) 

START: Layby next to Bridge Inn P.H. Edenfield Road Norden 

FINISH: On Black Pitts Road Norden just past the Parish Church 

Car Park. 8pm till approx 8.45pm. 

ROUTE: Up Edenfield Road to junction with Ashworth Road then 

left down Ashworth Road up to the junction with School Lane. 

Left at School Lane then turn Right at the junction of School Lane 

Furnbarn Lane and Clay Lane. Follow Clay Lane until it meets with 

Bagslate Moor Road take a left down towards Moorland Ave. Turn left again down Moorland Ave, 

and then take a left once again onto Edenfield Road, back into the Village turning left down Black 

Pitts Road to finish at approx. 8.00pm 

Saturday 9th June at 11.00am (6 mile Multi-trail Race) 

START: Outside of Ashbourne Nursing Home rear of Co-op Store 

FINISH: On footpath in Jubilee Park rear of The Bridge chippy (approx. 11.35am till 12.15pm) 

ROUTE: Up the rough track leading up to Whittaker Moss School and passing the school on your 

right. Cross on estate road and then continue along Furnbarn Lane until it joins up with School 

Lane, run past “Scott House” on your right and the Stables/Cattery on your left, drop down to road 

bridge then take first Right half way up a short sharp hill, along the Bridleway that leads to 

“Paperhouse Mill” footbridge,( start of the 3 laps) continuepast the “Paperhouse footbridge” 

following the footpath that leads to a small footbridge over a stream, climb up through the trees 

exiting into a field that runs adjacent with a small river and ravine on your right, until it exits 

some 50 metres in front of the “Millcroft Tea Gardens”. Take a sharp right along a snicket that 

leads down to a steam and then climb up to what was the Edgerton Arms. Run between the old 

Edgerton Arms and St James Ashworth Church which leads onto a 

footpath that crosses 2 fields with 4 stiles on them ,then exit Left 

onto School Lane, follow School Lane for approx. 120 metres before 

turning left again along the Bridleway that leads back down 

to Paperhouse footbridge. After 3 laps of reaching the 

“Paperhouse footbridge”turn right and go over the bridge and 

straight up a narrow footpath that comes out next to what was 

once the “Three Owls Bird Sanctuary” on Hutchinson Road follow 

the road through the Park past the play area and finishing onwhat 

is now named Jubilee Park above The Bridge chippy.

Sunday 10th June at 11.00am 

(Knowl Hill Fell Race 6 miles 1300ft accent Cat BM) 

START: Woodhouse Farm entrance on Woodhouse Lane Norden. 

FINISH: Waste land near end of Greenbooth Road Norden from 11.40am till 12.30pm approx. 

ROUTE: Follow the cobbled road up to the cattle grid at 

the top of Woodhouse Lane, then follow “Flags” in a North 

North West direction over open moorland until you reach 

a styled wall crossing at Naden Head disused farmstead 

above Higher Naden. Descend into Higher Naden 

Reservoir via the steps, then follow the path around 

reservoir in an anti-clockwise direction until you reach the 

bridge at top end of Higher Naden, cross the bridge and 

take the fence Stile immediately on your right and start to 

ascend of “Birchen Holes” followed by the climb up “Bone 

Holes” from beneath the waterfall, making your own way to 

the top of”Knowl Hill”. Descend off Knowl Hill in an 

easterly direction on a well-defined route over open 

moorland to “Dixon Brow” keeping left at Dixon Brow style and then descend into Middle Naden 

reservoir via the side “Lady Lees” woodland area. Run across Higher Naden Reservoir Dam wall 

and then re-climb the steps out of reservoir and head towards “Naden Dean “settlement by the 

well-defined path. At Naden Dean bear left and follow flags up to a wall stile, then follow the flags 

over open moorland“flagged” route until you final descend to the car park above Greenbooth. 

Follow the skyline path from the car park above Greenbooth all the way down to “Doctor Dam” on 

Greenbooth Road with 400metres to the finish. (The course has “flags” nearly all the way around 

along with Marshall’s at relevant points) 

New for 2018 (Preview of this year’s event) 

Rochdale Harriers 3 day event returns for its 24th year with 

the 2017 event seeing the highest number of participant in 

the events history. The Friday night Road Race saw over 130 

participants take to climbing/running up Edenfield Road and 

then down Ashworth Road before returning via School Lane 

Clay Lane and back into the Village and finishing near St 

Michael’s Church Hall on Black Pitts Road. 

This year the course record for the Saturday race may well 

be broken as the footpath route between “Millcroft Tea 

Gardens” and the old “Edgerton Arms“ has been upgraded 

to a high standard by Rochdale Council with new steps/ 

styles being installed and the footpath widened and bushes 

being cut back. 

Last year the Sunday Fell Race saw in excess of 200 entrants 

for the first time in the events history, along with 3 current British International fell runners all 

running the event. This year due to a number of local fell races being cancelled during the early 

part of March due to deep snow and ice,the Knowl Hill Fell Race has been added in as a 

replacement/alternative Fell Race for many local Clubs so therefore a new record entry may well 

ensue on the Sunday the 10th of June.

From May through to September each year 

a number of Derbyshire villages carry out a 

custom which was once an important ritual 

in the calendar – well-dressing. Cultural 

historians believe that the offering of floral 

tributes to the pagan gods guaranteed fresh 

water although dressing wells was later 

adopted by Christian churches as a way of 

giving thanks in the way that the harvest 

festival is celebrated. Some wells, though 

none that I know of around Rochdale, were 

given sacred status due to their supposed 

miraculous healing properties. 

The main practical functions of wells however, 

were to water animals or for household use. 

Records suggest that prior to 1760 most 

Rochdale people depended on well water 

for cooking, washing and brewing. Stone 

wells simply caught water flowing off the 

land or from springs many of which could be 

found around the town. Some wells could be 

hundreds of feet deep to the water table, the 

water raised in buckets by windlass or pump. 

Place names around Rochdale suggest the 

location of a spring or a well. So for example, 

Springfield Park is a point at which water 

emerges to form what was Marland Mere, 

Well Brow in Shawclough the site of a 

collection point and many street names 

beginning with ‘Spring’ suggest water sources. 

Due to urban spread and the gradual 

development of effective water supply to 

towns through the Victorian era, many of 

the old communal wells were built over but 

records remain of wells in house cellars or 

village squares abandoned or sealed. Some 

villages, for example Red Lumb or farms

Some Old Rochdale Wells 

and cottages around Carr Woodhad their 

own wells or well springs and premises near 

Spotland Bridge had a well at the bottom 

of what was Cold Wall Brow. There was a 

well in Butterworth Hall in Milnrow,another 

on Bellfield Lane. Jowkin Well once existed 

in Spotland as did Whooping Cough Well, 

water from which was said to be cure that 

particular complaint. One pub off Yorkshire 

Street, The Pack Horse which closed in 1936, 

pumped water from a deep well for brewing 

into the 1920’s. 

The name Welli’th’ Lane suggests an old 

well, now long gone and the nearby Healing 

Street may have proposed medicinal 

properties contained in the water. What few 

records there are of this well claim that as 

early as 1730 there was a Wellfield (Wellfield 

Club and Wellfield Health Centre existing 

now) and that in the 1840’s mills used water 

from a 300 feet well on this site as part of the 

process of finishing wool. Other wells around 

the town included Cant Hill Well located 

mid-way up Sparrow Hill which until the 

1930’s poured water night and day from an 

iron spout and had a chained iron drinking 

cup, its stone bearing the Biblical text 

‘whosoever drinketh of this water shall 

thirst again.’ 

Some wells remain to this day. Waugh’s 

Well stands on the Rossendale Way and 

commemorates the Rochdale poet and on the 

right-hand side of the A58 as you go up to 

the White House from Littleborough sits an 

ancient well collecting water off Blackstone 

Edge. Now almost overgrown, the inscription 

on one of its stone slabs, ‘Jacobs Well,’ is

still clear although other letters just below are 

difficult to decipher. Some historians believe 

the well to have been used by Roman 

soldiers (it is only 280 metres east of the 

Roman Road) for water supplies but also as 

a point of veneration, perhaps its water and 

spring being dedicated to one or many of 

their gods. Others believe that the well was 

previously known by the Celts although its 

name suggests a Christian dedication. In the 

19th century it was used for refreshment along 

nearby pack horse trails. 

The most central well to the town is, of course, 

Packer Spout at the bottom and to the right of 

the Parish Church Steps. In 1760 it was the 

town centre’s only local water reserve and was 

used by those living in houses around what 

was Packer Meadow and by passing pack 

horses, hence its name. It appears that when 

the buildings in the vicinity were taken down 

the large rectangular stone tank was kept – as 

today - to maintain and catch the flow from the 

underground spring.

Asparagus Salad with a 

Herb & Tomato Dressing 

SERVES 4 

Simple. Stunning. Life can offer few things 

better than this 

Ingredients 

1 bunch English asparagus - peeled to just 

below the tip 

1 bunch white asparagus - peeled to just 

below the tip 

2 beef tomatoes - peeled and flesh diced 

2 shallots - chopped fine 

1 tablespoon chopped chives 

Few leaves fresh basil-shredded 

2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar 

6 tablespoons olive oil 

Juice of ½ lemon 

To Finish 

Sea salt, Cracked black pepper, Fresh herb 

sprigs, Extra virgin olive oil 

Method 

1. Blanch the asparagus spears in a pan 

of boiling salted water and cook until 

“Al Dente” approximately 2-3 minutes 

depending on thickness, plunge 

immediately into ice cold water. 

2. Mix together the tomato chunks, shallots, 

chives, vinegar, oil and lemon and season 

to taste – if making in advance, add the 

herbs at the last minute. 

3. Cut the spears, removing any woody bits 

and arrange on 

plates, place the 

tomato dressing 

on top and finally 

scatter on the sea 

salt, pepper, herbs 

and drizzle of 

extra virgin 

olive oil.
