Selwyn District Residents' Guide 2018 49 S ELWYN MOTORING Motoring and transport enthusiasts in Selwyn are spoilt for choice. From vintage tractors and cars, hot rods, classics, speedway, stock cars, and aviation, there is always something to attract keen observers. The Ellesmere Motor Racing Club has been operating dirt track racing in the area for over 50 years. It has been running races at its Southbridge track since the 1980s, as well as some innovative events such as a Caravan Demolition Derby, and a 2 day National Sprint Challenge featuring some high-profile speedway icons. A family fun day featuring vendor stalls, food, entertainment, and, of course, show cars, tractors, trucks, bikes and more. Proceeds are given back to local causes – in 2017 it was the Rolleston branch of St John’s Ambulance. Aiming to become the South Island’s biggest car show, volunteers and more sponsors are needed to hold the 2018 event. Contact them through the Selwyn Motor Fest Facebook page. Wings and Wheels is a biennial fund raising event held in Darfield in April. Displays, entertainment, food and an amazing collection of planes, helicopters, motor vehicles and models. The Ellesmere Vintage Club is for people who share an interest in anything old and mechanical. Many members collect and restore vintage tractors and farm machinery, which are displayed at shows and events in the area. Christchurch Rod and Custom Inc. was founded in 2006 by a group of hot rodders. In 2007 the club became affiliated by the NEW LOCATION 95 Gasson St New Zealand Hot Rod Association. Their cars are used in many special events and can be seen at charity events and shows.
