COVER
Known as “El Charro de Oro”
(or, figuratively, the boy with the
golden voice), Sebastien was born
and raised in San Antonio. A great
moment soured by racism as he
sang the National Anthem!
THE LAST WORD
by Greg Pettis
Wow, what a week!
The President, the
FBI and...
This Cinco de Mayo celebrations
is more than honoring the
music and food of Mexico. It
is important to note these
events have been canceled all
over America. Despite the
ongoing rhetoric of the current
administration, The United States
remains a multicultural nation
with a large and growing Hispanic
population. Celebrating Cinco de
Mayo is a wonderful way to show
we are part of a global community
and that, by respecting and
learning about cultures that
are different from theirs (or
celebrating their own cultures
while teaching others about what
makes their heritage unique), We
are becoming responsible citizens
in that community.
The 111th Annual Cinco de Mayo
Parade and Fiesta is a free two day
celebration PAGE 8
The gathering of
1,000 attendees
will be the largest
in the nation to
commemorate the
40th Anniversary
of the assassination
of Harvey Milk
and George
Cinco de Mayo
Celebration
Cinco de Mayo is an annual celebration
held on May 5. The date is observed
to commemorate the Mexican Army’s
amazing victory over the French Empire at
the Battle of Puebla, on May 5, 1862, under
the leadership of General Ignacio Zaragoza.
In the U.S. the date has become associated
with the celebration of Mexican-American
culture. The DDG could not be more proud
of our Hispanic culture in the United Sates.
It’s too bad that we have a president and his
Party that cannot see that.
Locally Hispanic Americans are long
established in Palm Springs’ central and
eastern sections, and have constituted the
majority of the populations of Indio and
Coachella for many decades. In the 2000
U.S. census, about 35 percent of Coachella
Valley residents were Latino. But according
to the United States Hispanic Chamber
of Commerce, an estimated half (50–60
percent) of the residents are Latino. A large
portion of Latinos moving into the area are
from the Los Angeles-Orange County and
San Diego metro areas. Gay and Straight
young and old, they enjoy the same rights
and privileges as all Americans. Most of
us do not care about documentation, only
they share the same family values and
human rights for each other that we all do.
person uses that term, they are letting you
know they are probably racist or at best
uninformed or as I like to say “mentally
lazy”. As anyone knows we are all presumed
innocent until judged guilty and so its not a
leap to see that they will themselves ignore
our laws. Please consider this at voting
time.
After all Mexico gave the world guacamole,
tortillas, mariachi, tequila and mezcal, So
lets take a Culture Trip into a day that
we are celebrating to remember the great
contributions of our Latino brothers and
sisters and say thanks.
Lets take Popcorn made from maize (corn),
it makes sense that the Zapotec peoples
would have been the brains behind this.
These popped kernels were known as
momochtli. They were made in hot clay
pots, and then
And Chewing Gum, First stumbled upon
by the Mayans, who extracted the sap that
was originally used to make chewing gum
(‘chicle’) from trees.
Anything with Kahlúa is aways better most
people don’t realize that the delicious coffee
liqueur Kahlúa is Mexican in origin. It was
invented in Veracruz and, interestingly,
once had an all-female executive board.
Anti-Graffiti Paint Indelible Ink A key
element in the prevention of electoral
fraud. Countries, including Honduras
and the Dominican Republic. Earthquake
Personally I don’t think we should be Resistant Foundations and even Color
Father Miguel Hidalgo (1753-1811) was
the last person you would have thought
would kick off a revolution in Spanish
colonial Mexico. A respected parish
priest, Hidalgo was already in his fifties
in 1810 and was a valued member of
his community. Nevertheless, inside the
body of the dignified priest known for
his command of the complicated Catholic
theology, there beats the heart of a true
revolutionary. On September 16, 1810, he
took to the pulpit in the town of Dolores
and informed his flock that he was taking
up arms against the hated Spanish…and
he invited them to join him. Angry mobs
turned into an irresistible army and before
long, Hidalgo and his supporters were at
the very gates of Mexico City. Hidalgo was
captured and executed in 1811, but the
revolution lived on, and today Mexicans
see him as the father of their nation.
Benito Juarez (1806-1872) was a truly
remarkable individual. A full-blooded
Mexican Indian who was born into
grinding poverty, he didn’t even speak
Spanish as his first language. He took
full advantage of the opportunities he
had and went to seminary school before
going into politics. By 1858 he had
declared himself President as leader of
the ultimately victorious liberal faction
during the Reform War of 1858-1861. He
was removed as President by the French,
who invaded in 1861. The French installed
a European nobleman, Maximilian of
Austria, as Emperor of Mexico in 1864.
Juarez fought against Maximilian and
eventually drove out the French in 1867.
He ruled for five more years until his
death in 1872. Juarez is remembered for
many reforms, including curtailing church
influence and modernizing Mexican
society.
THE ART OF TRUCK
GRAPHICS
Advertising business on vehicles is not
new. Recently with the advent of large
graphics images being computer generated
on vinyl and adhered to surfaces is
now being used on most outdoor advertising.
It has now become common to
see vehicles covered in images reflecting
everything from beverages to cosmetics.
These images are usually photographically
generated and then enhanced by
computer graphics to fit the contours of
vehicles on which they are fastened to.
Some of this as become very passe and
can be seen on almost anytime you drive
anywhere. The German truck graphics
designers have become very creative
in their approach to truck graphics.
They are using visual illusion to create
AdamsArtExpose’
a perspective of various items to grab
attention. An example is the photo of a
truck which appears to be hauling a large
bottle of beer completely filling the cargo
compartment and sticking out of the
side. This captures the instant attention
of anyone viewing it.
Another witty attention drawing graphic
is of a load of Pepsi cartons that appear to
be loaded upside down in a transparent
cargo compartment of the truck.
One of the more unusual and what could
be considered frightening, is of a graphic
of a truck painted on the rear of a cargo
area of a truck of another truck facing
toward the back of the truck. This has a
driver of the truck painted as if looking
backward out of the truck reversing the
truck graphic. The wording in German
says “On the wrong way”. Could be visually
startling if you happen to come up
behind this truck on the autobahn.
A photo of a graphic of the U.S. flag
appearing to be blowing in the wind over
the wheels on the side of a truck created
in this country. Truck graphic designers
are starting to catch on in the U.S. also.
Just to prove that we may also be making
America great again?
Fabeyonce ‘Put My Shit Back”
Well this is going to be a very positive story
and everybody listen up. As you better know
by now, Drag Queens invest a lot of money
into what we do for love but when others
steal your shit, it is not cool! I’ve experienced
a couple of occasions where I set down my
jewelery, costume or heels then turn around
for a second to come back to nothing. Its like
magic it happens so fast. This is not cool.
And it has happens too often, to many of
my friends. In court they explain if a child
is alone at a table with a plate of cookies,
they will disappear and that child will insist
on innocence, even as they wipe the cookie
crumbs from their mouth.
We all share a dressing room and this is
supposed to be a safe place for us to come
back to rest or air ourselves off, touch up.
We expect to leave our stuff laying in our
designated area and not have to worry about
it. If you really love something you seen
on someone else you can ask “Where did
you get this”. If they want to be a bitch and
not say...Just admire it from the distance.
But it does not give you permission to steal
it. Once anyone finds out who did it, the
consequences for the thief can be great and
last a long, long, long time.
Also do not put your hands in other Queens
stuff and use without asking...
mind but when others use all your stuff up,
makeup, lip gloss, eyeliner (no ma’am) this is
where the investment part comes in and not
to mention heath concerns. By that I mean
yours after I find out you took my stuff. Sure
accidents happen right...
Always be prepared. Have all your stuff ready
the day before the show make sure jewelery,
nails, lashes, glitters, costumes, etc are ready
to go cause also, no one wants to hear...
“Girl, I was in a hurry and I forgot my nails
you got a extra pair”, because knowing my
ass I’ma be like. “Yes, I have a sandwich too
you want it as well?”. Other girls might just
charge you for them but it’s all part of the gig.
Today, a lot of venues have cameras leading
to the outside of dressing rooms and if you
get caught stealing, this is embarrassing and
I might ask to print your guilty mug. Having
to admit to all Queens
that you did it, will stir
up a lot of drama. You
can also be banned from
performing again. It’s
really not worth it.
So please keep in mind
before taking something
without permission that
this person has worked
hard for their money to
put into whatever it is
for it to just be taken. It’s
sick and it’s sad. Thank
There’s something unnerving about
you all for listening, Til
performing and see someone with the same
next time. Find me on
pair of heels. But when walk to the back and
Facebook under Fabeyonce or instagram
realize those were my heels (bitch!) You’re
Well shit! It looks like I picked
the wrong side of history again. As a child,
I remember the passing of the church
collection plate and being accused of taking
instead of giving! I did not take anything,
but I realized at that same moment I could
have. These life lessons pop up at odd
moments but this one is for sure “Luck
favors the prepared”. And being prepared
will get you 10 years of free candy every
Sunday.
Today our most pervasive Operating
System is Linux or some other form of
Unix. Open Source and free software
run the nation and fuels the many
information leaks. The same phenomena
fuels competitors to all of our products.
The ease of picking up Linux to learn or to
modify some piece of it, is very attractive.
Every one has your data. Comedian
Michelle Wolf says she regrets nothing
from her performance at the White House
Correspondents’ Dinner. But it was clear
she was fed your Internet data. But clearly
Wolf is on the right side of history. After
the GOP’s butt-hurt complaints she tweeted
“Why are you guys making this about
Sarah’s looks? I said she burns facts and
uses the ash to create a *perfect* smoky
eye. I complimented her eye makeup and
her ingenuity of materials.”
When the Vice President say he will not
dine alone with a woman, you get the
idea of how bad Pence is and how bad his
supporters could be. So bad, that many
are calling for active resistance. If you
insult God he claims the following “It’s just
wrong, and it’s an insult, not to me, but to
the vast majority of the American people
who, like me, cherish their faith,” That
means he will willing sick his rabid dons
on us heathens.
Sodomites savaged by mastiffs. An engraving
of Theodore De Bry. Based on the
accounts of good Christian hate for queers.
It is a good thing for us to be aware of
our past religious history. So many non-
Christians are quick to point out the
terrible things Christians have done in
the past but ignore the horrors being
committed in their own cultures today.
If you can believe God, Buddha, Allah,
Jehovah, or others exist and are all present
and let a habitual liar, unhinged, crooked
and socially reprehensible misogynist that
might lower your taxes lead us? All I can
say is well, shit!
But Given our fear of a Christian/Pence
presidency, Wolf compared Yes woman
Sarah to Aunt Lydia. The Aunts are a
class of women assigned to indoctrinate
DARE OPENS APRIL 20TH AT
THE DESERT ROSE PLAYHOUSE
The Desert Rose Playhouse, will present
the world premiere of a new play, Dare,
by Allan Baker, opening Friday, April 20,
2018 for a four-week run. Performances
are Fridays and Saturdays at 8:00 PM and
Sundays at 2 PM, through May 13, 2018.
The drama is about Jack, an 82-year old
gay man living in a Central California
nursing home, who reveals his role in
LGBT history to his compassionate doctor,
Josh. Jack was once a vibrant activist
for gay causes. He has lived his life to the
fullest and is now ready for his final curtain
– on his own terms. During their conversation
Jack recalls his life coming out
in San Francisco, and his relationship with
his one true love, David, a much younger
man.
The flashbacks go from the early 1970s in
San Francisco, to early 1980s Fire Island,
later in Greenwich Village, and finally the
1990s in New York. This covers the horror
of the AIDS outbreak, the allure of the Fire
Island Pines, and the beginnings of the
ACT UP movement. Jack tells Josh of his
life as a closeted banker meeting David,
and the changes that came to his life
because of David’s influences and love.
Playwright Allan Baker is an award-winning
LGBTQ voice from Austin, TX. Dare
is the winner of the 2017 Mario Fratti-Fred
Newman Political Play Contest at the Castillo
Theatre, New York, NY. It was created
with early support of ScriptWorks.
Dare features Richard Marlow as “Jack”,
Mathew Hocutt as “Josh”, Terry Huber
as “Younger Jack”, Noah Arce as “David”,
and Robbie Wayne as “Nurse Assistant”.
The production is directed and designed
THE LAST WORD by Greg Pettis
Well, the President doesn’t stop. Attacks,
engaging in Twitter warfare and slandering
those who disagree with him. That seems to
be fine to the House of Representatives (well
the Republicans), yet they were sure were
quick to attack the comedienne who spoke
at the White House Correspondents Dinner.
The US/North Korea summit is coming
soon. The North Korea dictator says he
will give up his nuclear weapons if the US
promises not to invade his country. He may
want to rethink that now that Trump seems
ready to walk away from the Iran nuclear
deal.
Special news came out that the Trump
campaign has been paying his former
attorney, Michael Cohen’s legal bills. Hmmm,
what does Trump want from Cohen? Since
the amount is over $130,000, the same as
what Cohen paid Stormy Daniels for silence
- seems like Trump may want the same from
Cohen, not the sex but silence.
Locally, the valley’s Path of Life homelessness
program is becoming a bit more controversial.
Some cities, including Cathedral City,
are Beginning to balk at paying POLM
more money when they are not placing
homeless in group homes throughout the
valley, but shipping them off to Riverside
or subcontracting to the Coachella Valley
Rescue Mission. The feeling is if CVRM is
doing the job, maybe they should have the
contract. Time will tell.
cannabis industry. Reports are saying that
within 5 years there will be 2 million jobs in
the cannabis industry! That is huge. And a
whole lot more than Trump’s plan to bring
back coal.
Speaking of coal, the Administration has
announced they are rolling back emission
controls for automobiles saying the
regulations are “unhealthy”. I always thought
the blanket of smog draping the Los Angeles
basin while I was growing up in the 60’s was
what was unhealthy.
Ford Motor Co has announced that they are
retiring all of their sedans; I.e., Taurus and
Focus, and will only be making SUV’s and
hatchbacks. There will be hybrids offered
but it does look as if the day of what we
consider traditional cars will be going away.
Remember, Cathedral City’s public input
sessions for the General Plan update
continues May 8 at 5:00pm. The meeting
will be held at the Agua Caliente Elementary
School on San Luis Rey Drive. This General
Plan is going to be laying out the city’s goals
and aspirations through 2040. Come lend
your voice.
That’s it for this week. Stay strong. Keep
resisting!
New estimates are in on job creation for the
