C uento / Story<br />
Fui a trabajar a otras regiones. Me ausenté<br />
por algunos años hasta que también pude<br />
volver y establecer un pequeño negocio<br />
de informática, en la ciudad próxima. Desde mi<br />
casa de siempre (muertos ya mis padres, idos<br />
a la capital mis hermanos), nunca omití mi regreso<br />
a aquellas playas, que ahora parecían pequeñas,<br />
una leve cinta entre el agua y la tierra,<br />
porque la isla se levantaba, poderosa y visible.<br />
El paisaje y la zona cambiaron. Prueba de eso<br />
ha sido mi productivo trabajo. En las largas riberas<br />
han aparecido otras poblaciones. Autos y<br />
gente desconocida transita por cada rincón. La<br />
selva parece haberse alejado. Y sin embargo, la<br />
isla sigue en medio del río vastísimo como una<br />
señal desafiante. Quizá la proteja la desmesura<br />
del río. Me pregunto a veces cómo pudo elegir<br />
el lugar donde iba a formarse, aunque sé que<br />
en el delta siempre está creciendo una isla.<br />
Tal vez no sea yo todavía un hombre completamente<br />
viejo. Mi mujer murió y nuestros hijos<br />
abandonaron la región. Aparte del encanto con<br />
que me envuelve este clima cálido, un misterio<br />
secreto me une a la isla. ¿Cuántos hombres han<br />
visto nacer alguna? ¿Están conscientes de ese<br />
hecho quienes lo han vivido? Creo que mi destino<br />
era ser fiel a su presencia: verla, conocerla,<br />
explorarla, guardarla en la memoria como una<br />
fantasía más extraordinaria que la realidad.<br />

years before I could return and set u a small<br />

childhood home my arents had died and<br />
my siblings had moved to the caital I never<br />
failed to return to those beaches that now<br />
seemed small, a thin ribbon between water and<br />
land, while the island rose owerfully into view.<br />
The landscape and the area had changed, as<br />
evidenced by the success of my work. ther<br />

and unfamiliar faces moved through every<br />
street. he ungle seemed to have receded.<br />
Nonetheless, the island still stands in the middle<br />
of the boundless river like a defiant symbol.<br />

it. ven though I know that islands continually<br />
aear in the delta, I sometimes wonder how<br />
this island chose its birthplace.<br />
aybe Im not irremediably old yet. y wife<br />
died and our children moved away. side from<br />
how enchanted I am by this warm climate, a<br />
mysterious secret links me to the island. How<br />
many eole have seen the birth of an island<br />
nd are those who have cogniant of what<br />
that means I believe it is my destiny to be<br />
faithful to it: to see it, know it, explore it, and<br />
protect it in my memory like a fantasy more<br />
extraordinary than any reality.<br />
