El programa del festival, que comienza
el 3 de mayo y se extiende
hasta la primera semana de junio,
incluye la proyección de documentales,
conciertos, conversatorios y
ponencias, así como el montaje de
la exposición “Los Rebeldes: La tradición
in(di)visible” en el Museo de
Arte Contemporáneo (MAC).
Entre los documentales están las
producciones Gurumbé, que explora
la herencia africana en España y
plantea su influencia en el flamenco;
desmembradas o invisibles”, negadas
o ignoradas, según palabras
de su curadora, Adrienne Samos.
“Los Rebeldes” presentará obras en
medios, estilos y formas diversas de
creadores ya fallecidos y de artistas
del presente, incluyendo prácticas
populares, artes visuales, performances,
cine, música y literatura.
The Festival program, which begins
on ay and runs through the first
week of June, includes documentary
screenings, concerts, talks, and
presentations, as well as the exhibit
“The Rebels: The In(di)visible Tradition”
at the Museum of Contemporary
Art (MAC).
Among the documentaries to be
screened are Gurumbé, which
explores African heritage in Spain
and suggests that it influenced flamenco;
Panamá Al Brown: cuando
el puño se abre (Panama Al Brown:
When the Fist Opens), the story of
efilo rown, anamas first world
champion boxer; and Una noche de
calypso (A Night of Calypso), which
looks at the history of that Afro-Caribbean
beat that, though strongly
identified with anamanian culture,
is struggling to survive the loss of
several of its great local artists to old
age and death.
Intended to show the different
paths of Afro-Panamanian creation,
the MAC exhibit will continue until
July 2018. The works are often
collectively created, reflecting a
countercultural tradition inherited
from the Cimarron culture of escaped
slaves in Panama. The idea
behind the exhibit is to demonstrate
that Afro-descendant art and its
aesthetic have been present for
centuries, but “veiled, fragmented,
or invisible,” and denied or ignored,
according to Adrienne Samos, the
ehibits curator. he ebels will
include works in various media,
styles, and forms by both living and
dead creators, representing popular
customs, visual arts, performances,
cinema, music, and literature.
