editor’s note
While the concept isn’t a new one, it seems the hot topic
of the moment is self-care. A quick google search reveals
pages of tips, tricks and suggestions to help you start this
practice. Our favourite insta-moms are linking their top
self-care products and, heck, even retailers are capitalizing
on the opportunity by offering up an ever growing list of
must-have self-care products.
Scrolling through my Instagram feed I can’t help but notice
that the world of social media portrays self-care in a way
that is aesthetically pleasing, but not necessarily practical,
affordable or achievable for the average person. Swiping
through photos describing yet another fancy, child-free
vacation overseas as “self-care” is hard to relate to.
I’m going out on a limb here, but if you are anything like
me, you may have been caught thinking that unless you
have time to pamper myself with a mani-pedi or spend a
solo night out, you aren’t really doing self-care. Am I right?

Don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against lotions, scented
candles, or any product you feel helps you, but this
summer I’m starting a new, personal self-care practice!
I’m focusing less on doing and more on not doing. I’m
committing to taking time in my day to stop thinking and
focusing and pursuing. I’m shortening my to-do list and focusing
on only the essentials. I’m giving myself permission
to be lazy, sometimes.
That’s why we are dedicating this issue to lazy summer
days, to piles of laundry, to minivans full of sand, to hair
that smells like chlorine and clothes that smell like campfire
smoke. It’s dedicated to surrendering your spare time
to nothing and enjoying moments without a schedule or
agenda. Slowing down and soaking summer in. And, while
you are at, enjoy a relaxing read through our Summer 2018
issue of course!

the brand. Not only are the designs adorable but I love
that they are organic.
What made collaborating with Sapling a perfect fit?
I was honestly a fan of the line, so when they asked me
to be part of it, I couldn’t have been more excited.
What inspired the styles and patterns in this
collection? Sapling Child was so amazing about holding
my hand through my first clothing design process (which
is a different beast than accessories), and we landed
on designing my collection around my favourite hotel:
Borgo San Pietro in Tuscany.
If you could describe this collection in just three
words, what would they be? Soft, special, sweet.

When did you first discover Sapling? How did this
collaboration begin? The owner sent me clothes when
my kids were babies, and I completely fell in love with

What is the biggest difference between
designing for your lifestyle brand Uncommon James
and working with kids wear? There are way more
details in clothing! I also don’t sit down and think of
different ideas to inspire me for each Uncommon James
collection; I’m not thinking of a story to tell before
having samples made. Uncommon James is more
about what I’m currently loving mixed in with trendsthen
the story and inspiration come when I’m putting
collections together. I get a ton of jewellery and home
good samples made before bunching them together to
make a collection.
What Sapling staple could you never go
without? The heart pants!
What is your favourite piece from the
collaboration? I’m obsessed with the fox onesie; the
fox is my absolute favourite.
What is the biggest challenge of balancing
motherhood and business? Trying to find that perfect
balance. It continuously changes for me, so I just try
to go with the flow. I’m home every night (unless I’m
travelling) by 5 pm or earlier to have dinner with the
family. I try to not get on my phone until the kids go to
bed around 7:15 pm (sometimes I’m better at that than
others). I’m really working on being present, especially
with my family. I hate when I’m distracted by work, so I
make a serious effort to give them 100% of me.

1. Tell us a bit about yourself and Mom Trends!
Before becoming the CEO of Momtrends Media, I
worked in advertising, publishing and fashion. Each
of these work experiences has influenced how I run
my company. I settled into Ralph Lauren in 1997
working in retails sales and spent nearly a decade
with the company climbing the corporate ladder. I
got to work closely with the fashion designers and
Mr Lauren himself as we assorted the Ralph Lauren
clothes that went into the 40 US stores.
When I was ready to start a family, I left Ralph Lauren
and started picking up freelance writing work. The
schedule of corporate life didn’t mesh with my vision
of motherhood. I began contributing to Babble.com,
Timeout.com, and many more online publications.
When I became a mom in 2005, I knew I wanted to
be involved in the parenting space. Seeing a void
in the blogosphere, I launched Momtrends.com in
2007. It is a lifestyle resource for moms. In addition
to beauty and fashion tips, we provide health and
money features and loads of travel ideas. It’s our

modern version of a women’s magazine.
We’re here to help you make educated decisions on
how to spend your time and money. Let us curate

2. Where do you live and why do you love your
neighbourhood? I live in DUMBO, Brooklyn, I’ve
been here for 12 years, and I love it. I have views of
the Statue of Liberty and the Brooklyn Bridge. It’s a
growing NYC neighbourhood full of entrepreneurs
and cool business. I work a block from my house and
just joined a cool women’s networking space called
THE WING that is also DUMBO-based. And my kids
can walk to school. When I need to, I am just one
subway stop away from Manhattan.
3. What does an ideal/dream day look like with your
family? An ideal day is spent out of the city travelling.
We love to ski, and we also love to explore. The kids
have already been to 25 countries. Momtrends has
a great series of travel posts that capture my travels
and make recommendations for trip planning. Skiing

ski guide in 2014, and it continues to be extremely
popular with our readers.
If it’s a normal workday, best days involve a workout
after I drop the kids, a day spent with my team coming
up with fresh editorial ideas, dinner on my Brooklyn
rooftop and a good glass of wine!
4. What has been the highlight of your career thus
far? Most days it’s pretty awesome. I’ve created my
dream job and built a million-dollar business. Plus I
get to work where I want with women who inspire me.
I’ve built a team of seven women who I adore working
with, and we have a really productive and supportive
workspace. I’m so proud of what my team produces
every day and how we help other busy moms get the
best out of life. I love how being a mom influencer
connects me to women who are trying to balance
work and family. My passion is helping other women
succeed. Along the way, I’ve been afforded some
pretty amazing opportunities thanks to the business
I’ve created. I got to cover the Vancouver Olympics,
taken my kids to Costa Rica, and skied all over the
United States all thanks to Momtrends.com.
5. What is the biggest challenge to balance
motherhood and business? There’s never enough
time to do everything I want to do. When push comes
to shove, family always wins. I’ve given myself the
grace to appreciate how I’ve created success on my
own terms. I’ve had to give up a lot to get where I am
today. I have no regrets, but I sure could use more
sleep.

6. What is your best anti-stress
remedy? Running keeps me sane. I have a few
working moms who are running partners. We hash
out our parenting woes as we get in a great workout.
It’s the best way to multi-task.
7. How has your company changed since you
started? A simple answer is we moved out of my
living room! The first seven years of Momtrends I
worked from home. I’m happy to have a designated
workspace. When it comes to the work product, we’ve
gotten better at storytelling. I’m so proud of how my
team takes on the new challenges that always seem
to pop up with social media.
8. First three items in your purse—go!
My iPhone X (it takes great pictures), lip gloss (I
have about seven gazillion tubes) and hand sanitizer
because NYC is filthy.
9. If you could go back and tell yourself one thing
about business and one thing about motherhood
what wisdom would you share?
Business: organise your contacts from the start. I still
have far too much information in my brain. I need to
be able to share what I know with my team better.
We’re still working on it.
Motherhood: Comparison is the thief of joy. When I
stick to my instincts and focus on what works for my
family, I am happiest.
10. Where do you see your company in the next
ten years? Our community will continue to flourish,
and we’ll continue to be on the forefront of brand
partnerships.
11. What are your top MOM TRENDS that
we should know about for summer 2018? Get a
fabulous one-piece suit. They can be sexier than you
know! Carve out some time to spend without the
kids. That’s why God invented grandparents. And
more moms than ever are becoming cocktail artists;
try something new this summer like our Tropical
