This collection resides at Sutter’s Fort State His<strong>to</strong>rical Park, Sacramen<strong>to</strong>, California.<br />

Abstract<br />

This collection contains the records <strong>of</strong> Charles E. Davis ( d.1933 ), an amateur explorer,<br />

naturalist and his<strong>to</strong>rian who retraced the <strong>Donner</strong> <strong>Party</strong>’s route in the years 1927 and 1928.<br />

Davis <strong>to</strong>ok more than one thousand pho<strong>to</strong>graphs during the project, kept a journal <strong>of</strong> the project,<br />

and corresponded with Harry Peterson, the cura<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> Sutter’s Fort throughout. The Charles E.<br />

Davis material was donated <strong>to</strong> the Fort by him at the project’s conclusion. Peterson also<br />

documented Davis’ trip by collecting and assembling scrapbooks, notes, maps, clippings, and<br />

correspondence, which are also included in this collection.<br />
