TERM 2
NEWSLETTER 06/18
“Live life to the fullest, and
focus on the positives.”
- Matt Cameron*
I can say without a doubt that the
abovementioned quote echoes what
we have experience at our school
during term 2. The respective heads
will reflect on the great achievements
of our schools and learners over
the past few months later on in the
newsletter. I am extremely grateful for
the role our teachers have played in
the success story of our school.
The PAC (Parent Advisory
Committee) is organising our golf day
for 31 October. The flyer with all the
necessary information is displayed
later on in the newsletter and I urge
all parents to please support us in
raising funds. We are looking forward
to a great day on the golf course.
As part of the communication
and marketing of our school we
are actively involved on social
media. Without investing money in
and in newspapers, we
can very easily reach
close to 3 000 people
with one post on social
media. I encourage all
parents and learners
to follow us on social
media and to spread the
good news about our
wonderful school and its
people (Facebook: Curro
We have collected a
lot of school clothes in
our “lost and found”. In
due course, we will give
parents the opportunity
to come and screen
the clothes for missing
items. The remainder of
the clothes will then go
on sale. To help us start
an active second-hand
school uniform business,
I request that you please
send all second-hand
school uniform articles
to school. These can be
handed in at reception of
the different schools.
Bullying is a great
concern for parents and
teachers alike and as
such I am very proud to
announce that we will be
rolling out an anti-bullying
campaign early in term
3. Although bullying
should be a regular
point of discussion at a
school’s managements
meetings, we will focus
specifically in term 3
on this campaign. We
hope that this will assist
a great deal in stamping
out these acts on school
grounds.
The exams are almost
over and I am looking
forward to viewing the
results of the hard work
our teachers and learners
put in. Good luck to our
grade 12s doing winter
school!
I would like to wish
everyone all of the
best during the winter
holidays.
Kind regards
HIGH SCHOOL HAPPENINGS
We are in the
midst of the
exams, a
very stressful time for
any family – uniquely
experienced by all. Our
Grade 8 learners are
writing their first formal
exam with longer papers.
The Grade 9’s need to
indicate, with their results,
which subjects they are
inclined towards for future
choices. Our Grade 10’s
have lots more work
but fewer subjects and
have to ask themselves
if their subject choices
were correct. The Grade
11’s need top marks to
apply to the university of
their choice. Finally, the
flagship - our Grade 12’s.
Need I say more? A busy
learner is a planner, so,
don’t shift the blame if the
time wasn’t spent in front
of the books. Be that as
it may, a lot was learnt
during the first half of
the year and after a wellearned
rest, we will have
done reflection on the
past and devise a plan on
the way forward.
On the day before
school starts, all staff
will attend training as we
do before every term.
The afternoon of the first
school day, we as the
staff will have academic
meetings per grade. If
need be, you and your
child will be invited to a
panel discussion during
that week where the
relevant staff teaching
your child will attend,
and we will make
plans going forward.
Difficult decisions will
have to be made after
this term. Wanting to
become a doctor or
CA is great, but getting
the grades is another
thing. Intentions must
be backed up by good
grades. I am not the killer
of dreams, but we must
be realistic. Postponing
these decisions has a
ripple effect, for instance,
subject changes will take
place and starting a new
subject, sooner rather
than later, is a no-brainer.
During Coffee@
Roodeplaat with our
Executive Head and
about 80 of our parents,
the concern was raised
that manners, conduct,
discipline and uniform
at the high school are
not up to standard. I
ask of you to take my
hand in addressing
these issues. You are
my first line of defence,
because some learners
leave their homes in the
morning with white socks,
unshaven and without
having done home work.
If only we at school fight
the fight, we will all lose.
On stage, we were
truly blessed with
performances from ATKV,
Curro Create, and the
Pretoria Eisteddfod. But,
the cherry on top is the
fact that the choir and our
drama group auditioned
and were selected to
participate at the State
Theatre in the Tshwane
Youth Arts Festival. All of
this will culminate in the
pantomime performance
later this year.
On the astro, our 1st
team boys and the u.16
girls were crowned
as the victors in their
respective leagues.
The 1st team boys did
not have a goal scored
against them during the
league and scored 47
goals themselves. What
a distinction! Netball was
not going to be left out
and the u.15s also won
their league. The rugby
boys were not going to
be out done as the u.14s
and u.16s are all playing
in the finals.
Although we have
mentioned their names
in congratulations, this
time, is to wish them
well for their respective
We will say goodbye to
one of our staff members
Ms Reana Le Roux at the
end of term, she helped
us out in a time of great
need and we were truly
blessed to have her teach
here.
All the best to the
matric staff that will host
winter school during the
holidays. I hope that you
reach your goals.
A big word of thanks to all
our staff from class room
to ground staff for a job
well done.
Please spend time during
this holidays with your
loved ones.
We truly appreciate your
support and we wish you
well.
GIRLS HOCKEY
From the previous newsletter until now, the girls’ hockey played three games.
Our first game was against Loreto Convent. The first team won 2-0 and the u/16
won 1-0. The second match was against Christ Church, where the first team and
the u/16s won again with a score of 2-1 and 3-0 respectively. Our last match for the
league was against Curro Thatchfield, where both teams once again showed what
they were made of by winning their final matches convincingly.
We came to the end of the league with a group of girls who showed us again and
again that hard work pays off. The first team finished second in their league and
the 0/16 team finished first. This means that the season is still far from over for the
u/16s.
The u/16’s progress into the play-off rounds for the Noordvaal trophy. Their first
game will take place on 21 July 2018.
BOYS HOCKEY
Boys Hockey vs Eduplex – 16 May
2018 (Away)
As the fourth round of the league
started, Curro Roodeplaat was set to
face Eduplex for the first away game
of the season.
Point for this game were given to
Curro Roodeplaat as Eduplex used
senior players in the team. The juniors
stood their ground against a side that
outmatched them. The first half came
to a close with the scores level at 1-1
and the second half produces one
goal, which ended the game 1-2 for
Eduplex.
The seniors played on grass during
the pre-season tour as preparation
for the upcoming league games. This
game was what they were preparing
for to determine if the tour was
successful. The game started sloppily
as the transition from playing on astro
to playing on grass is not that simple.
After almost 10 minutes into the game,
Thato Matlaila scored and broke the
tension. The first half produced 3
more goals for Curro Roodeplaat and
a further 4 goals in the second half,
and with that, our first away victory of
the season ended 0-8 in the favour of
Curro Roodeplaat.
Boys Hockey vs AHS – 23 May 2018
(Home)
Round 5 of the boys hockey league
saw Curro Roodeplaat facing Affies on
Roodeplaat’s home ground. Judging
by the season’s results, this was going
to be a tough game for the juniors.
Affies scored first and added another
goal in the first half to have a 0-2
advantage at half time. Roodeplaat
came back with one goal in the second
half but unfortunately, the game ended
with 1-2 which was the first loss for the
juniors in the season.
After a mistake from Affies, the senior
team scored their first goal in less than
a minute after the game started. The
ball found the back of the goal another
four times in the first half and the team
added four more goals in the second
half to end the match 9-0 for the home
side.
Boys Hockey vs Maragon – 30 May
2018 (Home)
The result of this game determined
if the junior team would be going to
playoffs or not. The pressure was on
as they had to win, or this would be
the last game of the season. The first
half ended with a narrow margin, with
Roodeplaat in front with just one goal.
But, the second half tells a completely
different story, as Roodeplaat scored
an additional 3 goals to secure their
place in the playoffs.
This season was the first time
Maragon played in the hockey league.
As there was no history to fall back
on, we had no idea what to expect.
The game started with Roodeplaat
attacking wave after wave and
converting when needed. This was the
first double digit win in the history of
the school. Roodeplaat won 11-0, and
secured their place in the playoffs.
used as preparations for the playoff
rounds to follow.
The senior team started the first half
well when they score from a short
corner in the 3rd minute. The rest of
the half was an enormous defensive
effort from Overkruin to keep out the
goals. The second half produced some
of the best goals of the season, as
Roodeplaat scored seven goals to take
the game and make it a successful
day of hockey with an 8-0 victory.
Boys Hockey vs Hoërskool
Overkruin – 1 June 2018 (Home)
This fixture would be a first for
Roodeplaat against such a big
school with years of sporting history.
Overkruin has a total of 3 teams going
through to the Noordvaal hockey
playoff rounds, which had our nerves
running wild before the game.
The juniors scored one goal in the
first half and played their hearts out
to score another three goals in the
second half. This game was a friendly
NETBALL
2018 was yet another successful netball season
for Curro Roodeplaat. Not only did we have four
complement of teams, but also performed extremely
well in all age groups within our league.
We are very proud to announce that our under 15
team won the D1 league (the second year in a row)
and played at the play-offs on 31 May. Although they
lost their match, the players played their hearts out
and enjoyed the play-offs thoroughly. Congratulations
TSHWANE CHESS TOURNAMENT FINALS (District 1)
The annual Tshwane District 1 Tournament took place at Du Preez Van Wyk Primary
School on 19 May 2018. More than 20 schools were represented by sending their
7 best chess players to take part in the tournament in every age group. Different to
previous years, players were announced individually instead of in teams.
After 8 gruelling hours, Roodeplaat’s u/15 team delivered two top players. Gerhardt
Behrens ranked 2nd, and David Wang ranked 5th in the top 10 players in the district.
Velile Makgosi also ranked 8th in the u/13 team.
Only the top 7 district players progressed to the Gauteng North individual
championships. This will take place in the Amfisaal, at the Voortrekkermonument
heritage site on 26 May 2018.
Pretoria Eisteddfod broadens horizons!
The Eisteddfod Art Festival creates a
outstanding work and learners receive
positive feedback from adjudicators,
which they can use to broaden their
Various learners from Curro Roodeplaat
took part in the Pretoria Eisteddfod. The
THE PRIMARY SCENE
I
sometimes visit the
grade1-3 learners in
the quad area during
their breaks and time
after time I am pleasantly
surprised by their sincerity
and friendliness. Cheerful
the little ones will come
running to say hallo or
just to spoil me with a
hug. And I experience it…
our Roodies are happy
learners!
The term was filled with
activities and had many
highlights. We think of
the Roodie learners that
excelled at the Pretoria
Eisteddfod (see article
under culture). Then
there was the class music
evening where learners
blew us away with their
musical talents. Young
orators surprised us with
their convincing abilities
and tongue-in-the-cheek
sayings. We end this term
with an exam which has
been studied hard for.
Thank you to every coach,
player and parent for a
season’s commitment
towards the netball and
rugby activities. This also
includes the mini-netball
and “bulletjie rugby”.
We are super proud of
our u11 and u13 rugby
teams who were crowned
winners of their leagues!
Thank you to the cross
country coaches and
athletes for their hard
work this term as well.
Congratulations to
Armand Vivier and Mr
Glen Attwell who both
received North Gauteng
colours and qualified
for the inter-provincial
meeting at Zeerust.
Congratulations to
teachers Sanet Myburgh
and Janique Smuts and
their junior choir on their
selection to take part in
the Tshwane Youth Arts
Festival during August.
Please ensure that all
the items of your child’s
school uniform are clearly
marked. This will assist in
ensuring that the learners
receive back their lost
clothing. Please also read
Mr Niemand’s paragraph
regarding our “lost and
In conclusion I would
like to emphasise the
importance of school
attendance. Please
do not keep your child
home unnecessarily
and communicate
absenteeism with the
register educator.
Appointments need to be
scheduled after school
hours.
I wish you and your family
an enjoyable winter
holiday. Drive safely and
see you on Tuesday, 17
July when the school reopens
again.
LOFTUS BULLETJIE RUGBY DAY
It was a very cold morning at Loftus Versfeld, but Curro Roodeplaat’s bulletjies were
warmed-up and ready for action. We enjoyed the day tremendously and played lovely
bulletjie rugby. A special word of thanks to our coaches and parents for your help and
support throughout the season.
NETBALL
We stand at the end of our netball season. All the girls worked very hard and we are
have positive feedback and we will sets higher goals for 2019. Thank you to all the
girls, parents, coaches and umpires for their hard work and dedication throughout this
Here we are at the
end of yet another
term. We’ve
experienced so many
adventures, learned and
discovered new things and
played with our friends.
In these last three weeks
our progress reports are
being done, we finish off
our hard work and then
it’s holiday. We’ve also
worked on a surprise for
daddy on Father’s day
and we have a pyjama
day with a movie to look
forward to. Have a look at
our photos to see just how
much we have been spoilt
by Sable Hills Kwikspar
with our shopping spree
there. You will also see
our Group 5 friends who
went to Kameeldrift police
station to say thank you for
all their hard work.
We would like to thank
both mommy Gertbrecht
(Ankeli in the Bee class)
who gave us the three
Cycads at the entrance of
our school and mommy
Monique (Jaéndre, who
is also in the Bee class)
who organised the pretty
painted wooden words
displayed in our foyer.
We would also like to
say a heartfelt thank you
to each and every one
of you as parents for
your contributions, care
and love this term. We
appreciate you!
We wish you all a lovely,
snug winter holiday.
Warmest regards,
