EVENTS Virtual becomes reality In June, Norbain launched its Virtual Event, an online exhibition and seminar theatre. PSI editor Andy Clutton put the kettle on and took in a show... Afew years ago we were told that there was no physical need to visit a trade show and all we would be doing is logging on and using the network, to network. This never really ever took off apart from a few IT consumer events that were basically created to show off the exhibition creative software technology. Today however, with widespread connectivity and a host of devices we can choose to log on with, perhaps the time is right to re-visit not visiting a venue. Norbain has taken the leap with its first Virtual Event with a theme of Cyber and GDPR. Leave the car at home, we’re going to a show! First thing that was required was to fill in the registration form, so that you can access the event and also so that they know who is attending (more on that later). This procedure is so commonplace these days that it was a breeze to complete. Then we’re in and presented with a ‘Lobby’ screen of sorts showing us the various areas of the event we can choose to visit. I first headed off to the Presentations area. In this section are five seminars, each starting on the hour from 10am to 3pm. The first one I watched was from Nick Platt-Higgins, Key Account Manager, Axis Communications. Nick discussed the importance of addressing cyber security during the design and manufacturing phase and also talked about GDPR and its role within the industry. During this seminar there were chances to ask questions and to check to see who else is watching the presentation. In fact at any point during your visit to the event you can have a look and see who else is online, which is a nice touch. Another good idea is to be able to download the presentation slides/notes. The seminar itself is Nick standing at the lectern addressing a room of people with a screen behind him much in the way you would expect of a trade show presentation. The sound and image quality of the video was good and it was quite clear what was being discussed. Once he had finished I moved back to the lobby area and, having 40 minutes until the next seminar, ventured into the exhibition hall. There were 16 companies exhibiting at the event, however with it being a Norbain event I headed for the Vista stand first. Each of the virtual stands features a number of options you can click on; the Vista stand for example has an introductory video from Sales & Marketing Manager Dean Kernot along with links to product documentation, the Vista website, videos, social media and a contact form. There is a choice of ways to proceed with product documents, you can either view them straight away, download them or add them to your own ‘event bag’ to remain in your profile for later referral. Back in the Lobby there is an option called the Cyber & GDPR Zone. This was a timely topic for the theme of the event and the one we saw featured so heavily at IFSEC two weeks later (the Virtual Event took place on 5th June).
