Criminal Justice Management Forum<br />

Co-Chair of the Criminal Law<br />

Committee, Craig Caldicott<br />

represented the Society at a meeting<br />

of the District Court’s Criminal Justice<br />

Management Forum. Matters discussed<br />

included statistics as to the number of<br />

matters before the court, being disposed<br />

of and carrying on; and concerns in<br />

respect of the Sentencing Act as to major<br />

indictable reform matters.<br />

10 MAY <strong>2018</strong><br />

His Honour Chief Judge Evans<br />

The President Tim Mellor and the Chief<br />

Executive Stephen Hodder discussed<br />

various matters with His Honour Chief<br />

Judge Evans at their meeting on 10 May,<br />

including the number of cases being<br />

handled by the court, with the number of<br />

trials pending having dropped over the<br />

past couple of years; delayed judgments;<br />

the impact of major indictable reform<br />

legislation (mostly being experienced in<br />

the Magistrates Court) and the timing of<br />

sitting days in Circuit Courts.<br />

23 MAY <strong>2018</strong><br />

The Honourable Chief Justice Kourakis<br />

Tim Mellor and Stephen Hodder<br />

attended a meeting with the Chief Justice<br />

on 23 May <strong>2018</strong>. Topics raised with the<br />

Chief Justice included the impact of<br />

Major Indictable Reform legislation on<br />

court delays; problems Members were<br />

experiencing in the Probate Registry;<br />

planning for the introduction of the<br />

Electronic Court Management System,<br />

for which a single set of Rules to cover<br />

all Courts is being drafted; cuts to the<br />

Courts Administration Authority’s<br />

budget (which had for example,<br />

necessitated the closure of the Holden<br />

Hill Magistrates Court) and the<br />

devastating impact any further reductions<br />

would have; and Rules pertaining to<br />

applications for permission to appeal to<br />

the Full Court from a decision of the SA<br />

Employment Tribunal or the SA Civil and<br />

Administrative Tribunal.<br />

23 MAY <strong>2018</strong><br />

Senior Counsel Appointments<br />

Tim Mellor and Ian Robertson SC<br />

(President of the SA Bar Association)<br />

attended a meeting with Justices Blue,<br />

Hinton and Doyle which was convened<br />

by the Judges to consult on a proposed<br />

revision of the Supreme Court Rules for<br />

the appointment of Senior Counsel. New<br />

Rules were subsequently approved by the<br />

Supreme Court Judges on 28 May <strong>2018</strong><br />

and were gazetted on 7 June <strong>2018</strong>.<br />

31 MAY <strong>2018</strong><br />

SALRI Expert Roundtable on Surrogacy<br />

The Society was represented by Julie<br />

Redman and Andrew Redman-Wenham at<br />

a Roundtable held by the SA Law Reform<br />

Institute to consider the law of surrogacy<br />

in Part 2B of the Family Relationships Act<br />

1975 and to examine a suitable regulatory<br />

framework for South Australia. B<br />

MEMBERS ON THE MOVE<br />

DYLAN STEEL<br />

MICHAEL IRVINE<br />

Duncan Basheer Hannon (DBH) is<br />

pleased to announce the appointment<br />

of Dylan Steel as a Partner to the firm,<br />

effective April <strong>2018</strong>, in its commercial<br />

division. Dylan has experience acting<br />

for employers, builders and self-insured<br />

corporates in commercially related business<br />

activities. Dylan’s legal experience has<br />

included acting for clients in workplace<br />

relations, workers compensation, transport<br />

and logistics and insurance matters. DBH<br />

also welcomes Michael Irvine as a Senior<br />

Associate within the Personal Injury team.<br />

Michael has worked extensively in Personal<br />

Injury Law as well as Industrial law, Work<br />

Health and Safety and both the State and<br />

Federal Workers’ Compensation schemes.<br />

O’Loughlins Lawyers are pleased to<br />

welcome Jane Ekin-Smyth to our<br />

practice. Jane practices exclusively in the<br />

area of family law, having over 30 years’<br />

experience in the field. She will work<br />

closely with other members of our team<br />

to ensure all aspects of a family law matter<br />

can be resolved entirely at O’Loughlins,<br />

including mediation, transferring property,<br />

wills and estate planning, and business<br />

planning advice as a consequence of a<br />

breakdown of a relationship.<br />

Carrington House, 61-63 Carrington St,<br />

Adelaide, as of 30 June. Darrell Trim QC,<br />

Richard Mellows, Geoffrey A Britton,<br />

Matthew Young and Cheryl Smith are<br />
