National Senior Certificate (NSC)<br />

Duration of Course<br />
The programme extends over a period of 4 years.<br />
Delivery Mode<br />
Students are required to do theory and practical work in the class-room and also in the field<br />
(Social welfare agencies) respectively. In level 1 students are to visit Social Welfare agencies<br />
for purposes of understanding the infra-structure, administration, professional functioning and<br />
activities of the agencies in a variety of settings and services.<br />
In level two (11) students are engaged in agency observation for a period of three weeks. At<br />
third (3) year level students are expected to engage directly and professionally with clients with<br />
alternative class-room theory and field work practice twice a week. At fourth (4) year level,<br />
students are placed in Social Welfare agencies for a period of 5 months under the supervision<br />
of qualified, and experienced social workers. Placement is designed to help them work directly<br />
with clients and communities and also engage themselves in research in preparation for a 52<br />
page Dessertation.<br />
Registration<br />
Students are expected to register with the South African Council for social service profession<br />
(SACSSA) at the 2 nd year level study of the Social Work programme as student social workers.<br />

LEVEL 1<br />
1 st SEMESTER<br />
SOW 1106: INDIGENIZATION<br />
In the above module on indigenization, the student is sensitized about the rural environment in<br />
which WSU is located. Students are therefore made to understand the contextual realities of the<br />
rural environment and the value system associated, among other imperatives with “UBUNTU”<br />
and the understanding of the value system which underpin the content of the module on the<br />
indigenization. Thus, the value base and the principles of the social work are taught against this<br />
background of indigenization.<br />
