its evolution. The historical background of the social work profession is necessary for students<br />
to understand that the profession started in Europe, then to the United States of America<br />
and in South Africa. The module further explains developmental approach to social welfare<br />
as proposed by the current government in power with the implementation of its policies and<br />
programme on course. (White Paper, 1998).<br />
SOW 1001: FIELD-WORK (YEARLY MODULE)<br />
The above module in field-work introduces students to social welfare organizations situated<br />
around Mthatha. It focuses on giving students information about infrastructure, functioning,<br />
administration and daily activities of the organization, including the kind of delivery services<br />
offered by the organization and the role that is played by social workers in each welfare<br />
organization.<br />
2 nd SEMESTER<br />
SOW 1201: INTRODUCTION TO SOCIAL WORK THEORY, PRACTICE, CODE OF<br />
CONDUCT AND ETHICS<br />
The above module introduces the student with fundamental theories, methods and the generic<br />
scope of the social work programme and its association to related disciplines such as sociology,<br />
psychology, criminology and mental health. The module also addresses the principles conduct<br />
and ethics that underpin the practice of social work.<br />
SOHSC 1206: SOCIAL WORK IN HEALTH SCIENCES<br />
The module addresses the impact of HIV-AIDS and related problems with individual and their<br />
families. It also highlights socio-economic and health factors that impact upon the health of the<br />
individuals and their families and the role that can be played by a social worker in dealing with<br />
problems of HIV-AIDS endemic.<br />

1 st SEMESTER<br />
SOW 2101: INDIGENIZATION<br />
The above module on indigenization addresses community problems of rural and traditional<br />
societies and the role that can be played by social work to instil the values in self-help.<br />
SOW 2102 : FAMILY THEORY<br />
The above module on family therapy addresses conceptual framework on the structure and<br />
preservation of families and how these families function within and also in the outer environment.<br />
The different types of families, the nature, the structural approach, characteristics and their<br />
strengths and weaknesses are also highlighted.<br />
SWL 111: SOCIAL WELFARE LAW<br />
The module introduces students to Social Welfare policies and procedures pertaining to sociolegal<br />
issues of the social work profession. It focuses on the role to be played by Social workers<br />
in Children’s Court procedures, the presentation of Court reports relating to the protection of<br />
children and related family affairs.<br />
