SCHOOL OF NURSING<br />

BACHELOR OF CURATIONIS (BASIC)<br />

A Nursing degree leading to registration with the South African Nursing Council as a registered<br />

nurse(general nurse, psychiatric nurse, community health nurse) and midwife.<br />

The purpose of the Programme<br />

The purpose of the programme is to offer education aimed at developing the student’s social<br />

and technical skills necessary in rural and urban socio-economically deprived communities for<br />

better and understanding and management of the needs of the people and for provision of<br />

Primary Health Care.<br />

Delivery Mode<br />

The programme is offered on a full-time basis only. The mode of teaching is in large group<br />

tutorials, visit and placement to health centres, communities and hospitals together with<br />

stimulation of skills in the clinical skills laboratories. The focus is on problem-based learning<br />

and community-based education.<br />

Minimum Entry Requirements<br />

Senior Certificate<br />

Matriculation exemption with the following subjects:<br />

English E(HG) or D(SG)<br />

Biology E(HG) or D(SG)<br />

Physical Science E(HG) or D(SG), E(SG) may be considered on merit if the other symbols<br />

are above the minimum requirements.<br />

National Senior Certificate (NSC)<br />

Compulsory Subjects:<br />

4(50-59%) in English at Home Language or First Additional level<br />

5(60-69%) in isiXhosa at a Home or First Additional Language level<br />

4(50-59%) in Mathematics Literacy or<br />

3(40-49%) in Mathematics<br />

4(50-59%) in Life Sciences<br />

4(50-59%) in Physical Science<br />

Not compulsory subjects:<br />

4(50-59%) in Life Orientation<br />

4(50-59%) in Information Technology<br />

Persons above 23 years of age with a Senior Certificate and conditional exemption from South<br />

African Higher Education. Failure to obtain the mature age exemption – the student with be<br />

disqualified.<br />

International Students<br />

must produce a valid student permit<br />

submit proof of the assessment of qualifications by the HSRC.<br />
