tools. But conversely, the best hairdresser in the world won’t be<br />

able to do much without the right instruments, which is why we’ve<br />

spoken to some top hairdressers in this issue about the innovative<br />

JUDGEMENT DAY<br />

THERE WERE A phenomenal number of entries, but only a select few made<br />

it onto the 2018 Most Wanted shortlist. Each category was judged by its own<br />

panel of experts from inside and outside the industry, which saw a throng<br />

of names in hair, fashion, publishing and business roll up to knuckle down<br />

and assess what was without doubt the toughest two days of judging – EVER.<br />

These included session stylist Ken O’Rourke, Gianni Scumaci, Sophia Hilton,<br />

Vogue’s Jessica Diner, Katy Young of Harper’s Bazaar, Paul Percival of Percy<br />

& Reed, The Beauty Conversation’s Navaz Batliwalla, Millie Kendall MBE<br />

of BeautyMART and Errol Douglas MBE. The Grand Final takes place on<br />

3 September at the Natural History Museum in London. Tickets are sold out,<br />

GREAT LENGTHS STAR SALONS<br />

GO ON A ROMAN HOLIDAY<br />

THE TOP NINE Great Lengths salons in Ireland and the UK were whisked<br />

away to Rome as a reward for their hard work and expertise. The nine salons<br />

with the highest number of Great Lengths hair extensions sold were certified<br />

with platinum status and invited to visit the production facility in the Italian<br />

capital. They learned about the 25-year history of the brand, and observed the<br />

cutting-edge technology used to create the products today. Valerie Patterson,<br />

director of Cowboys and Angels in Dublin, said: “We observed long-term,<br />

skilled workers making sure every single hair is top quality, from arriving in<br />

raw bunches from India to the five-star products we buy from Great Lengths.”<br />

Spark Sessions celebrate<br />

women in hairdressing<br />

The first ever IHF Spark Sessions event to celebrate the successes of women in the industry<br />

and create a network of support, took place at the Galmont Hotel in Galway. A panel<br />

discussion formed the centrepiece of the session, featuring (pictured above, from left) Sarah<br />

Mason of Sarah Mason Professional, Olive Tucker Lee from House of Colour, Denise Walsh<br />

of Rustiq Salon and Danielle Kennedy, vice-president of the IHF and owner of Lloyds Hair.<br />

They shared their thoughts and ideas on what it means to be a successful female in the hair<br />

industry in Ireland, and discussed how they built their businesses, along with hopes for the<br />

future. The next session will take place in Waterford this autumn.<br />

When hair is washed or wet, the hair strands absorb water and swell,<br />

increasing in diameter by up to 16 per cent. As this happens, the outer<br />

cuticle layer becomes slightly rougher, making it more susceptible to<br />

damage and breakage. To keep this at a minimum, it’s vital that hair is<br />

dried quickly yet gently, using the right combination of heat and air flow.<br />

Hair regains its dry strength and the cuticle can return to its normal shape.<br />

The engineers at Dyson examined healthy and damaged hair using<br />

electron microscopes and light chambers to understand how light reflects<br />

from the hair. Their research showed that with extreme heat, the structures<br />

within the hair become damaged. The result? Weaker hair that’s less shiny<br />

as light scatters off the hair rather than reflecting evenly.<br />

Ready for take-off<br />

The Dyson Supersonic hair dryer Professional edition is<br />

the destination; behind it, there’s an incredible journey…<br />

Most hair dryers are, in the eyes of leading engineers, dumb things – noisy, heavy,<br />

non-ergonomic and delivering heat damage to hair. The team at Dyson, squirrelled<br />

away in its labs in the Cotswolds, were convinced there was a better, more<br />

intelligent way. And that way takes a lot of work – £56m was spent on building hair<br />

science labs and conducting painstaking research before a single hair dryer was<br />

sold. Over four years, 103 Dyson engineers, including scientists and stylists, looked<br />

at everything from air flow dynamics to hair’s cellular structure, completing tests<br />

using nearly 1,625km of hair. A total of £75m has been spent to craft and then reengineer<br />

the Dyson Supersonic and the Professional edition.<br />

Advanced scanning electron microscopes let Dyson scientists look at single<br />

strands of human hair in high definition after testing. Why? To understand the<br />

structure of hair and which elements cause splits, holes and other damage. Tensile<br />

tests measures the strength and elasticity of each hair strand before and after drying<br />

and styling, by stretching the strand until it breaks. Healthy hair remains strong<br />

and elastic while damaged hair is easier to break. Thermal cameras allow Dyson<br />

engineers to understand the temperature of the airflow coming out of the machine,<br />

ensuring it’s consistent throughout, even when pushed close to your client’s head or<br />

to a brush. The Real Imaging Test Algorithm machine – known as RITA by the Dyson<br />

techs – provides a range of image settings specifically designed to highlight key hair<br />

stress characteristics and features, such as strand alignment, flyaways and frizz.<br />

Particle Image Velocimetry allowed Dyson engineers to measure the speed of<br />

the jet and visualise its shape. Get a deeper understanding of the jet structure and<br />

turbulence, and you can optimise the airflow. Aero-acoustic engineers listened to<br />

the sound of the Supersonic. By refining the design, those engineers have created<br />

a tone that we humans can’t even hear.<br />

It took 582 prototypes until those Dyson perfectionists were satisfied. The Dyson<br />

the world, but without the right people<br />

working in it, you’re not going to have much<br />

success. So how can you ensure that your<br />

salon is staffed by the crème de la crème of<br />

hairdressing – and how can you hold onto<br />

them in the long run?<br />

Kara O’Shea, general manager at Sean<br />

Taaffe, knows exactly what she wants when<br />

she is searching for staff. “We look for people<br />

who are passionate about the industry – that<br />

fire has to be present from the start,” she<br />

explains. “There has to be an excitement<br />

about up-and-coming trends – I want them<br />

to talk about what they would love to be able<br />

to do in the future. We also look at their past<br />

employment history to see whether they’ve<br />

stuck with things.”<br />

She has used many methods of<br />

recruitment, and the results are surprising.<br />

“We have done basically everything, online<br />

recruitment agencies, radio, and social<br />

media, but what works best for us is word of<br />

mouth with incentives in our team. Recently<br />

I put a front of house position on our salon<br />

group chat, and by the end of the day five<br />

people had been recommended. We provide<br />

a financial incentive to staff who refer<br />

someone – they get half of their bonus when<br />

the new person starts, and after six months<br />

we give them the other half.”<br />

“We engage with the students in college<br />

studying hairdressing or beauty as well as<br />

students still deciding on a career,” she says.<br />

“We are having open days this September<br />

with local secondary schools to give them an<br />

insight to life at Rossanos. There’s nothing<br />

as satisfying as watching a young stylist<br />

flourish in their career and really grow into<br />

their own.”<br />

So, you’ve got the right staff – now how<br />

can you hold onto them? “It is so important<br />

to communicate with all employees and<br />

be aware of what is going on in their lives<br />

outside of the salon,” explains Deirdre<br />

Kilcoyne, co-owner of Salon 2 in Sligo. “You<br />

have to be understanding and flexible with<br />

them if they are dealing with some issues. As<br />

staff situations change we try and work with<br />

them to ensure it suits them and the business<br />

– and we always try to be firm but fair.”<br />

Sean Taaffe has an incentive scheme in<br />

place that offers perks to staff who remain at<br />

the company. “You can earn extra holidays<br />

– up to 30 a year,” says Kara. “People on the<br />

scheme get to leave earlier on holidays such<br />

as Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve. We<br />

also offer them exciting opportunities, pay<br />

for their parking and give their close family<br />

members half-price hairdressing services.<br />

“To keep them interested in the brand we<br />

add something more each year. You might<br />

be offered a job down the road that offers<br />

you €100 more a week – but are they going<br />

to give you those extra things?”<br />

From its beginnings as a completely blank canvas, Edward Scully has<br />

carefully curated Echo Hair Design, an oasis of calm where clients can<br />

If you were at the 2018 L’Oréal Colour Trophy Ireland Grand Final in Dublin, you’ll know that<br />

it’s not an experience you’re likely to forget. Taking place in the Clayton Hotel on Burlington<br />

Road, there was champagne, a black tie dinner and fabulous host in the form of TV<br />

presenter Ruth O’Neill. But the most important part was the hair created by Ireland’s top<br />

hairdressers – judges and industry icons Paul Dennison (Ken Picton), Andrew Mulvenna<br />

(Andrew Mulvenna Hair), Siobhan Jones (Headmasters), Adam Reed (Percy & Reed) and<br />

Tina Farey (Rush) certainly had their work cut out picking the winners. Feeling the FOMO<br />

a rainbow of flawless looks parading down the catwalk<br />

not just this year, but also for the previous 52 years in<br />

Ireland! Not only does it provide a playground for top<br />

colourists to let their imaginations run wild and a place<br />

for men’s hairdressers to flex their creative muscles,<br />

LCT also provides the opportunity for young colourists<br />

to prove their talent. The looks presented define trends<br />

for the next year, and inspire other hairdressers to take<br />

Part of the beauty of the L’Oréal Colour Trophy evening lies<br />

in the stunning hair shows that show off the genius of L’Oréal<br />

Professionnel hairdressers. And this year the theme of the<br />

individual shone through, with both the Alan Edwards Art Team<br />

and Sugar Culture exploring themes of personality and freedom –<br />

proving that there’s a colour out there for absolutely everyone.<br />

ONE ZERO ONE<br />

With red light flooding the catwalk,<br />

eerie figures floated along in formation,<br />

wearing structures that wouldn’t look<br />

out of place in a dystopian science<br />

fiction movie. But once the music was<br />

turned up, uniformity was replaced<br />

by extroversion, with a high fashion<br />

celebration of design, movement and<br />

magnificence. With a glittering finale that<br />

sparkled under the lights, this was a<br />

hair show that was determined to alter<br />

expectations and dismiss the ordinary.<br />

The rule book was torn into<br />

confetti in this gender-neutral<br />

spectacle. Described by the hair<br />

team as “sinfullly fierce”, colours<br />

were bright, the music was loud<br />

and the dancing demanded<br />

complete attention. And the<br />

looks? An unforgettable spectrum<br />

of peacock blue, candyfloss pink<br />

and icy white. This was truly an<br />

expression of how hair makes us<br />

who we are.<br />

There is an answer to every hairdressing problem<br />

out there – all you need is the right tool<br />

PROBLEM-SOLVING IS a skill listed on every CV; we all<br />

value the ability to find solutions to issues we encounter.<br />

And, when it comes to hair, there are the same problems that<br />

come up again and again. Some clients struggle with a lack<br />

of volume, while others are troubled by wet styling or frizz.<br />

Luckily, with a bag full of carefully curated gadgets, you can<br />

solve those issues – giving clients the best hair possible and<br />

providing them with the right tools to take home, too.<br />

When you’re choosing your own tools, you need to invest<br />

in the best, and consider the hair’s long-term health. “We<br />

sometimes think that if we put a tool up to the full heat it<br />

gets a client out quicker, but this is not the case,” says Dylan<br />

Bradshaw, owner of Dylan Bradshaw salon and two-time Most<br />

Wanted Exceptional Stylist winner. “We talk about colour and<br />

treatments, then we burn the hair! Our clients deserve the best,<br />

and Dyson has reinvented the wheel. It’s really important that<br />

we set the standard and that’s why I would say to any stylist:<br />

‘take a Dyson Supersonic hair dryer Professional edition for<br />

two weeks and I guarantee you’ll be converted.’”<br />

Once you’ve mastered your own kit, then you can spread the<br />

word and showcase its brilliance to clients. Don’t underestimate<br />

your expertise when talking about what the right tool can do<br />

for them and their hair issues – you’re in a unique position to<br />

show them exactly what they need. “Your clients need the right<br />

kit – there is no point in having a superb colour without having<br />

the products and tools to go with it,” explains Aidan Fitzgerald,<br />

owner of Aidan Fitzgerald Hair Salon in Blackrock, Dublin.<br />

Communication is key, so make sure you truly understand<br />

what your client’s hair worries are. “As hairdressers, we are<br />

clients’ personal consultants,” says Aidan. “If we don’t give<br />

them good advice then they’ll go elsewhere. At my salon we<br />

have monthly staff meetings to refresh our knowledge. We give<br />

every client a little briefing, without it being a hard sell, and<br />

find out about their lifestyle. If hair isn’t maintained away from<br />

the salon, then you haven’t given them the full service.”<br />

It’s also important to flaunt your expertise – so make sure you<br />

demonstrate the benefits of a piece of kit. “As a professional,<br />

clients will value your advice and are more likely to see you<br />

as a gateway to better hair, trusting your recommendations,<br />

especially if they see it in action,” explains Gorka Arraras,<br />

creative manager at Charles Worthington Salons in London.<br />

“Demonstrate to the client how to use the tools. They will<br />

see the effect of using the correct tool or specific brush and<br />

understand that it will not only ease their styling routine,<br />

it will also make a difference on the hair and its quality.”<br />

Get into the habit of sharing your know-how and you’ll see a<br />

nice boost to your retail when clients leave the salon with new<br />

gadgets. “Knowledge is key – the client will know and feel if<br />

what you’re advising will make a difference,” explains Gorka.<br />

“Once you build that trust, selling retail is second nature.”<br />

WITH BUILDINGS DESIGNED by legendary architect Gaudí and<br />

long, tree-lined streets that lead down to the sea, Barcelona is a hub<br />

of artistic expression. So it’s no surprise that the city was picked to<br />

host the 10th annual Style Masters International Awards. Thousands<br />

of hairdressers gathered to support their countries at the event,<br />

which was hosted by Miquel García, global executive vice-president<br />

for artistic and education at Revlon Professional. The show saw<br />

live styling from finalists, with David Rae representing the UK and<br />

Maria Montes Campal of Spain taking home the trophy. Sam Wall<br />

flew the flag for the UK in the American Crew All-Star Challenge,<br />

but was pipped to the post by Vitaly Pimenov of Russia. And there<br />

was no shortage of inspiration, too – from the aquatic beauty of the<br />

Eksperience segment and the launch of Glamsquad to the raw power<br />

and sharp barbering of the American Crew show, these hairdressers<br />

proved they are truly masters of their craft.<br />

TOP ALFAPARF MILANO hairdressers jetted off to Valencia for the<br />

ALFAPARF Milano Nexxt Colour GenHairation final. The contest saw<br />

stylists from Ireland joining contestants from all over Europe and Latin<br />

America, all battling it out to create unique, on-trend colour looks. Emma<br />

Finlay of Couture Hair in Omagh represented Ireland, having qualified<br />

after winning the Fantastic Colourist Award at the ALFAPARF Milano<br />

Fantastic Hairdresser Awards last year. However, it was Daria Elida<br />

Ardelean of Romania and her peachy pink creation that took the top prize.<br />

The event also featured the ‘Time After Time’ hair show by members of<br />

the ALFAPARF Milano International Team, including Mimmo Laserra,<br />

Genny D’Auria and global ambassador, Paul Stafford. It guided the<br />

1,300-strong audience through looks from the past and present with a<br />

glimpse of the future – which appears very exciting indeed.<br />

A POSTPONEMENT FROM March didn’t stop the<br />

crowds from flocking to Croke Park for the Irish<br />

Hairdressers Federation Championships, as well as a<br />

record-breaking number of competitors. Throughout<br />

the day, hairdressers, trainees and barbers showed off<br />

their skills in front of an audience and judging panel,<br />

with hopes of taking home one of the trophies. And once<br />

the hard work of judging the creations was done, it was<br />

time to gather for the ceremony. Newly inaugurated<br />

IHF president and co-founder of House of Colour, David<br />

Campbell, hosted the evening, presenting 21 accolades<br />

and celebrating the talent demonstrated by hairdressers<br />

from all over Ireland. The finale saw Ciaran Dowd of<br />

Occasions Hairdressing given the ultimate title – IHF<br />

ALFAPARF Irish Hairdresser of the Year.<br />
