Jeff Weltman, president of basketball operations for the Orlando Magic, announced the naming of Ernest Eugene as head athletic trainer, Luke Storey as head strength and conditioning coach, Sameer Mehta as physical therapist, and Nathan Spencer as performance and rehabilitation coach. In addition, Christian Espinoza, who served as an intern last season, was promoted to fulltime as assistant athletic trainer. Eugene joins Orlando after spending four seasons as assistant athletics director for sports medicine at Virginia Tech. Prior to that, he spent six seasons as the athletics trainer for the men’s basketball program at Marquette University, where he was promoted to director of sports medicine during his final year. Storey spent more than five years at Peak Performance Project (P3), a sports performance facility that utilizes advanced sports science technologies to assess and train professional athletes. He began at P3 as a senior performance specialist and was later promoted to director of performance, where he was responsible for leading and supporting the performance team, while also ensuring that all aspects of professional growth were being met. Prior to Orlando, Mehta spent 12 years at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital. He joined MedStar in 2006 as a physical therapist, then spent the past six years as a clinical supervisor/outpatient physical therapy. Mehta is a board-certified sports clinical specialist through the American Physical Therapy Association and a certified strength and conditioning specialist. The Tigers baseball team of the Dr. Phillips Little League defeated the Winter Garden Twins 8-2 to win the District 14 Little League Majors Top Team Tournament and claim the best little league team in all of Southwest Orlando. Johnny Jenkins pitched a complete game four-hitter for the win, striking out 11 and allowing no walks. Jenkins and Madden Bourst scored five of the Tigers’ runs on three hits apiece, Bourst with two doubles. Josh Zdrowak had two hits, including a two-RBI triple in the fifth that broke open a tight game. For the five-game tournament, AJ Gutzmer’s eight hits and team-leading .647 on-base percentage added punch to the lineup. Brandon Lohr and Gabe Rodriguez led the Tigers’ defense — Lohr at catcher and third base, Rodriguez mostly at second base, assisting on 17 defensive outs without an error. St. Luke’s United Methodist Church is sponsoring St. Luke’s Soccer, a noncompetitive soccer league — where scores and stats are not recorded — open to boys and girls in prekindergarten through eighth grade. Last month, Hangar Clinic, a prosthetics and orthotics provider, and marine dealership Tommy’s co-hosted the fourth annual wakesurfing clinic. More than 45 people with limb loss or other physical challenges had the opportunity to learn how to wakesurf at a complimentary clinic presented by professional instructors. It was open to all ages and experience levels. The clinic’s athlete who is a below-knee amputee. Participants learned the fundamentals of wakesurfing, performed exercises to improve balance and stability, and had opportunities to try out the latest prosthetic devices, with input from physical therapists and certified prosthetists and orthotists. Local PGA golf professional Matt Borchert of Isleworth Country Club in Windermere will be fulfilling a lifelong dream when he tees it up in the 100th PGA Championship from Aug. 9 through Aug. 12 in St. Louis. Borchert is one of 20 PGA club professionals to qualify for the PGA Championship, where he will compete alongside Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy, Phil Mickelson, Jordan Spieth and more of the greatest golfers in the world.
