Natural or built? Caring for my locality ~ Activity 1 Objective • identify, discuss and appreciate the natural and human features of the local environment Working scientifically • Questioning • Observing • Predicting • Analysing (sorting and communicating) • Recording and communicating Background information All environments can be divided into two types: the natural environment and the built environment. The built environment includes things such as buildings, roads and cars. These are all objects that have been built by people. The natural environment is the one that we are most aware of, and includes food, plants, animals and how they live with each other. It is the combination of the natural and built parts of the environment that makes up the world in which we live. The world has many different types of environment. Natural and built features of the environment exist together. These include buildings near rivers and roads running through mountains. It is important that pupils are able to recognise and name features of their local environment as well as identify features of the natural environment that exist elsewhere. Before the lesson Materials needed • A sunny day! Preparation • Schedule a walk around the school before the lesson begins. The lesson Stimulus • Walk around the school with the pupils. Ask them to point out objects that are part of the natural environment and those that are not natural and are part of the built environment. Remember things like soil and moisture. What to do • Back in the classroom, write the headings ‘natural’ and ‘built’ on the whiteboard. Pupils list things they saw on their walk and decide which heading they come under. • Complete Question 1. • Pupils draw and label three naturally occurring and three human-made objects seen on their walk. • Discuss different environmental features with the class. Which features are seen in the local environment? • Ask pupils to describe a mountain, river, lake and forest. Ensure understanding before pupils complete Question 3. Teacher check Additional activities • Pupils can complete a similar exercise in their own homes and gardens. The information can be brought to school and shared with the class. • Pupils mark out a metre square on the school field using metre rulers and string. They can then count all of the different types of living or non-living things (pebbles, twigs etc.) they find in that area. Viewing Sample Display ideas • Take photos of ‘natural’ and ‘built’ features in the school environment.
