Materials in the classroom Properties and characteristics of materials ~ Activity 1 Objective • identify and investigate a range of common materials used in the immediate environment Working scientifically • Questioning • Observing • Predicting • Investigating and experimenting • Analysing (sorting and classifying) • Recording and communicating Designing and making • Exploring Background information Materials have different properties of strength, weight, flexibility, texture etc. Some materials occur naturally and others do not. Natural materials may come from underground; for example, oil, rock, metals, slate or clay. Other materials may come from living things; for example, wood, wool, cotton, leather, silk or rubber. Some materials come from natural elements that have been changed, for example sand–glass, clay– crockery, bricks. Some materials are synthetic such as nylon, plastic and fibreglass. Before the lesson Materials needed • Classroom objects such as a stapler, scissors, pencil, ruler, chair, jumper, desk, book, newspaper, chalk, drawing pins. Preparation • Have all the materials available for discussion. The lesson Stimulus • Show the pupils some of the objects you have collected and discuss what they are made from. What to do • As you discuss the items you have collected, list the materials on the board (e.g. glass, paper, wood, plastic, metal, cloth). • Direct pupils to the survey they are going to conduct in the room. • Have the pupils write the materials from the board into the table. Each material is written only once. • Pupils circulate, tallying the objects they find next to the materials on their worksheets. (Note: Some objects can be recorded twice or more if they are made of more than one material.) • Discuss their findings, checking the objects are listed next to the correct material. • When tallying is complete, the pupils fill in the graph. • Discuss the results and have the pupils complete the questions at the bottom. • Lead the discussion on the properties of the materials which are most common and the relevance to their ‘commonality’. After the lesson • Ask the pupils to differentiate between natural (n) and synthetic (s) materials. Pupils can mark on their tally sheets which is which. Answers • Teacher check. Viewing Sample Additional activities • Survey could be extended to outside materials or to home (perhaps pupils’ bedrooms) and compared with the classroom result.
