Last month we were proud
to feature Giovanni Vargas
on our cover story and to
recognize the success of
this hard-working, talented
New Orleans native.
In the excitement of hearing
the big names Vargas has
worked with on tour, we
failed to clarify that for the
tours of Barbra Streisand
and Fleetwood Mac, Vargas
served as the road manager
under the guidance of their tour manager, and Varga's
mentor, Marty Hom. We were able to correct this for our
online articles, but the mistake leaves on print. I apologize to
everyone, and especially to Giovanni for the errors.
We are constantly learning. As passionate writers and lovers
of this city, our main goal provide a needed voice in a
multicultural Greater New Orleans. To allow this, we cannot sit
still waiting to be perfect, so we give it our best shot and strive
to be better every time. We humbly learn from our mistakes
and appreciate constructive feedback, which allows for
continuous improvement.
We are grateful for the support and the encouraging words we
constantly receive. It is a fantastic feeling to see you
picking-up and reading the magazine and to see the growth of
our audience. We enjoy getting feedback, tracking the digital

Social entrepreneurs pursue social innovation
and transformation in different fields such as
education, health, environment, and business
development. A common factor among them is
the pursuit of poverty alleviation and economic
mobility through business methods and by the
application of innovating alternative solutions in
traditional practices.
As an Economic Developer that believes in
equity as a growth strategy and the power of
social entrepreneurs, I'm glad that New Orleans
is home to organizations promoting these
concepts. One of my favorite organizations in this
field is Fund 17. Fund 17 is a small, but growing
501c3 nonprofit with the goal of turning hustles into
livelihoods in the 17 wards of New Orleans.

To get a sense of their relevance, consider that
some of the most common barriers for small
businesses to scale are lack of access to adequate
information, capital, and basic business skills.
Fund 17 addresses all of these issues.
The organization provides free training and
resources to entrepreneurial community members
including one-on-one business development
support, workshops, and loan advising.
Founded in 2012 as a student-run nonprofit, they
have grown into a diverse and robust community
of entrepreneurs, partners, professionals and
students dedicated to creating economic

opportunity for all. The organization has reached
more than 200 entrepreneurs who otherwise would
not have been served by any traditional
organizations in New Orleans.
Fund 17 targets the under-served neighborhoods
and communities that have the greatest need of
finding pathways to economic advancement.
Fund 17 has received financial and professional
support from international organizations such as
KIVA and the Kellogg Foundation. Most recently
they were awarded the Next 300 Competition grant
by the City of New Orleans. All of this is a
testament to the excellent work that Fund 17 has
been doing, and the great potential it has to
continue influencing the upward economic mobility
of our communities.
This year, the organization is in the process of
designing a community business incubator that will
offer affordable space, equipment, and computers
to entrepreneurs. It will also include a food
business co-op to facilitate the scaling of
businesses in this industry. This strategy is truly
necessary to strengthen neighborhoods that have
not benefited from New Orleans overall economic
success in the most recent years.

Los emprendedores sociales buscan innovación
social y la transformación en diferentes áreas como
la educación, la salud, el medio ambiente y el
desarrollo de negocios. Ellos tienen como factor
común el buscar aliviar la pobreza y conseguir
movilidad económica a través de métodos
empresariales y alternativas innovadoras a
prácticas tradicionales.
Como profesional en el área del desarrollo
económico y creyente tanto en la equidad como
método para el crecimiento, así como en el poder
de los emprendedores sociales, estoy muy
contenta de que Nueva Orleans sea sede de
organizaciones que promuevan todos estos
conceptos. Una de mis organizaciones favoritas en
este campo es Fund 17.
Fund 17 es una organización sin fines de lucro en
trayectoria de crecimiento con el objetivo de
6 convertir actividades comerciales informales en
negocios en los 17 ?wards? o distritos de Nueva
Orleans.
Para entender su relevancia es importante
considerar que algunas de las barreras más
comunes para que los pequeños negocios escalen
incluyen la falta de acceso a información adecuada,
capital, y habilidades básicas de negocio. Fund 17
aborda cada uno de estos temas.
La organización provee entrenamiento gratuito y
recursos a los emprendedores en la comunidad.
Esto incluye apoyo uno a uno para el desarrollo de
su negocio, talleres, y asesoría para obtener
préstamos.
Con origen en el 2012 como una organización
estudiantil, Fund 17 ha crecido a convertirse en una
robusta y diversa comunidad de emprendedores,
aliados, profesionales y estudiantes dedicados a
crear oportunidades económicas. La organización
ha beneficiado a más de 200 emprendedores que

¿Qué es lo que más le gusta de su trabajo?
Me llena de mucha satisfacción cuando cierro una venta
de propiedad residencial y veo la alegría reflejada en el
rostro del comprador en el momento en que recibe las
llaves de su primera vivienda. Es muy emocionante ser
parte del momento en el que el comprador se da cuenta
que con su esfuerzo logró hacer su sueño realidad.
¿De donde es?
Soy nacida en Nueva Orleans de ascendencia cubana.
¿Cuál es su lugar favorito en Nueva Orleans?
Mis favoritos son el Barrio Francés y Uptown. Estos
lugares son muy particulares y diferentes. Disfruto de su
historia, de la arquitectura mixta con influencias francesas
y españolas, de su ambiente y la diversidad en sus
restaurantes.
¿Dónde vive?
Vivo en Kenner y también tengo mi oficina en la calle
Williams de esta ciudad. Estoy muy orgullosa de ser parte
de esta comunidad.
¿En qué consiste su trabajo?
En adquisición de negocios para Delta Title Corporation.
Sirvo como notaria en las transferencias de títulos de
propiedad al completar una venta. Mi objetivo es asistir al
cliente satisfactoriamente a conseguir el SUEÑO
AMERICANO. Durante el proceso de compra, trabajo
consiguiendo el título de propiedad, determinando los
impuestos de la propiedad, y estoy en comunicación
directa con el prestamista, el agente y el cliente.
También disfruto trabajar con una red de agentes
inmobiliarios, prestamistas e inversores. Me apasiona
educar a los compradores en el proceso de compra,
inversión y re-financiación de sus viviendas.
Presentar seminarios de compra de vivienda para
compradores por primera vez es otra de las cosas que
más disfruto de mi trabajo.
¿Qué pueden esperar los compradores al hacer
negocios con usted?
La venta de cierre es para muchos una experiencia
abrumadora y hago todo lo posible por explicar los
documentos cuidadosamente. Estoy disponible para los
clientes, incluso después de finalizar la transacción, para
responder cualquier pregunta o inquietud que puedan
tener. Cuento con años de experiencia y conocimiento, y
soy totalmente bilingüe en inglés y español.

Where are you from?
I was born and raised in New Orleans to Cuban parents.
What is your favorite place in New Orleans?
I love the French Quarter and Uptown. They are so unique.
I enjoy the history, architecture, ambiance, and the great
restaurants found there.
Where do you reside?
I live in the city of Kenner and my office is located on
Williams Boulevard. I am very proud to be a part of this
community.
What does your job entail?
I am a business developer for Delta Title Corporation. I
serve as a closing agent for property transfers that complete
sales. While inspections and financing protocols are
completed, I work behind the scenes performing title
searches, determining property taxes, communicating with
lenders, and also holding deposits in a separate escrow
account while preparing the closing statements and
obtaining the title insurance.
How long have you worked at Delta Title Corporation?
I have been at Delta Title Corporation for 13 years.
What is your favorite part of the job?
I get great satisfaction when I close on a home. My favorite
moment is seeing the joy on the faces of first-time home
buyers when they realize their dream has come true. I enjoy
networking with Realtors, lenders, and investors. I?m
passionate about educating buyers in the process of
purchasing, investing, and/or refinancing their homes, so
hosting first-time home buyers seminars is also a favorite.
What can buyers expect when doing business with you?
The closing sale can be an overwhelming experience and I
make every effort to explain the documents carefully. I am
accessible to clients, even after completion of the
transaction, to answer any questions or concerns they may
have. I have many years of experience and a wealth of
knowledge in the business, in addition to being fluent in
English and Spanish languages.
What advice do you give people who want to buy a
home?
Buyers should educate themselves on the process of buying
a home. First-time home buyers seminars are very helpful.
Buyers should always explore a few different financing
options and do their research to make the best decision.

It?s August in New Orleans and that means two
things--heat and hurricanes. August and September are
considered the height of hurricane season in New
Orleans and the rest of the Gulf Coast and Caribbean.
Each year, we nervously watch the daily weather
updates hoping that nothing is coming our way.
The thought of a major hurricane destroying our homes,
our communities, and life as we know it, strikes fear in
most New Orleanians who have been through a
hurricane. However, the Native Americans offer a unique
perspective.
The English word hurricane comes from the Native
Americans of the Caribbean. The Taíno of Puerto Rico
had a word to describe these large spiraling storms that
would come about during the summer. When the
Spanish arrived, they borrowed the word and spelled it
Huracán.
The word Huracán was also shared with other native
peoples within the hurricane belt of the Gulf of Mexico
and Caribbean. While the spellings and stories about
these storms differ across cultures, there is one central
theme that is often overlooked. Like many early cultures,
the native people of the Caribbean understood that life
was not always happy and not always
sad. There was an equilibrium that
occurred in nature.
You can think of this as day and
night, male and female, hot and
cold, etc. The native peoples
understood that nothing was
permanent: Along with life comes
death, but after death, life comes
again.
This theme of an infinite spiral of
chaos and life can be seen in the
Taíno version of the hurricane. The symbol they used
depicts the face of Guabancex, or ?the one who destroys
everything? with two long and curly arms spiraling out of
her face. We use a version of this symbol today to depict
hurricanes on our modern weather maps.
The Mayan story of the god Huracán survived the
European conquest better than most of the other
cultures. According to the Mayans, Huracán was one of
the creation gods, who could create great destruction or
build new worlds. It was Huracán that destroyed the
earlier versions of the earth with fire and then a great
flood.
Each time he destroyed the earth, Huracán gathered up
materials and started new.

While we, today, associate hurricanes as powerful
wind and rain storms, the Maya understood these
storms a bit more in depth.
The Yucatan Peninsula is a large flat area of land that
is situated at one end of the Caribbean--directly in the
path of the most powerful hurricanes and the center of
the Mayan universe. The Maya knew that a hurricane
wasn?t just the single storm alone.
As these storms blew through the region, they would
knock down enormous swaths of forest. After the rainy
season, the fallen trees would dry out. One bolt of
lightning could then ignite the trees and huge fires
would then sweep across the Yucatan.
The now deforested land would then be susceptible to
flooding. Of course, there was also the large storm
surges--large waves that would wash far up onto the
land, changing the coast line.
For this reason, to the Maya, Huracán was more than
the initial wind and rain. Huracán encompassed all the
power of these great storms--including their aftermath
and the renewal of the land.
The word hurricane comes from the Americas--from
the native peoples of Latin America--and they never
intended for it to be a scary word.
Our ancestors acknowledged all aspects of the
hurricane--the destruction and the renewal; and that?s
how we should see them, along with other disasters in
our lives.
There will always be hurricanes, and floods, and fires,
but with these disasters come opportunities to grow
stronger and better. It may not be the easiest thing to
do, but the next time you?re faced with a disaster take
a step back and look at the entire picture.
Life is an infinite spiral of ups and downs, of tears and
laughs, of births and deaths. A hurricane is just nature
giving us a chance to renew.

huracanes. Agosto y septiembre se
consideran el apogeo de la
temporada de huracanes en Nueva
Orleans y el resto de la costa del
Golfo y el Caribe. Cada año
observamos ansiosamente los
reportajes diarios del clima
esperando que no nos llegue
ninguna tormenta.
Pensar que llegue un gran huracán
a destruir nuestros hogares,
comunidades y la vida tal como la
conocemos, despierta temor en la
mayoría de los habitantes de Nueva
Orleans que ya han pasado por un
huracán. Sin embargo, los nativos
americanos ofrecen una perspectiva
diferente sobre este fenómeno
natural.
La palabra inglesa huracán proviene
de los nativos americanos del
Caribe. El Taíno de Puerto Rico tenía

Huracán. Mas allá del viento y
la lluvia de una tormenta,
Huracán abarcaba todo el
poder de estas grandes
tormentas, incluyendo sus
secuelas y el proceso de
renovación de la tierra.
La palabra huracán proviene
de las Américas, de los
pueblos nativos de América
Latina quienes nunca tuvieron
la intención de que fuera una
palabra aterradora.
Nuestros ancestros reconocían
todos los aspectos del
huracán: la destrucción y la
renovación. Y es así como
nosotros deberíamos ver no
solo los huracanes, sino
también cualquier desastre en
nuestra vida.
Siempre habrá huracanes,
inundaciones e incendios, pero
con estos desastres vienen
oportunidades para crecer más
fuerte y para mejorar.
Puede que no sea lo más fácil
de hacer, pero la próxima vez
que se enfrente a un desastre,
dé un paso atrás, e intente

With smart phones becoming
smarter and bigger, the next step in
the improvement of this technology
is the incorporation of flexible
screens. This shift in screen
technology is being applied beyond
telephones to a wide range of
devices, which are becoming thinner
and bigger.
Television sets are the other
electronics that get many
advantages of developing flexible
screens.
Rumor has it that Samsung and LG,
the leading television and smart
phone manufacturers, are planning
on releasing a dual screen smart
phone and a television with a
foldable screen by next year.
What does this mean for the
consumers?
As usual, it initially will mean
customers who need to have the
latest technologies will pay top prices
for the new features, but in the long
run, everyone will get to enjoy the
advantages of flexibility,
space-saving, and bigger surfaces,
not to mention the technology will
open the world to a whole new set of
apps.
While screens get bigger on smart
phones, they also demand bigger
batteries, which will come with more
weight.
While we are already seeing smart
phones with curved edges and
curved televisions, a flexible
technology will allow the user to flex
the screen on demand.
These rumors leave us with a pile of
questions and expectations and
what we know for a fact so far is
what LG revealed during the 2018
Consumer Electronic Show (CES).
LG unveiled a 65-inch foldable screen
television. This device uses OLED
technology for its screen, which is
composed by tiny lights that power
each pixel individually allowing the
screen to bend.
Rumor has it that Samsung
and LG, the leading television
and smart phone
manufacturers, are planning
on releasing a dual screen
smart phone and television
with a foldable screen by next
year.
In the demo video (Scan QR Code to
see it) the flexible screen gets rolled
into a cabinet-like case.
As exciting as it sounds to have this
technology, the bulky encasing of the
LG product defeats the space-saving

Hoy en día existen teléfonos y
televisores con pantallas curvas,
pero una pantalla flexible permite
que el usuario doble la pantalla en
cualquier dirección y que la acomode
a su gusto.
El rumor de disponibilidad de este
tipo de pantallas para el próximo año
nos deja con incógnitas,
predicciones y expectativas de otro
nivel.
Durante el CES (Consumer
Electronic Show) del 2018, LG
develó un televisor de pantalla cien
por ciento enrollable de 65 pulgadas
que nos permite hacernos una idea
de lo que podría ser esta tecnología
una vez mejorada para salir al

La pantalla presentada usa
tecnología OLED, que está
compuesta por pequeñas lamparitas
que iluminan cada pixel

A recent visit by a Colombian band
focused the spotlight on the continuous
close relationship between New Orleans
and Latin America.
Preservation Hall, considered the mecca
of our city?s native music, served as the
host for Tribu Baharú during a recent
residence where the two musical genres
found their shared common roots.
As far as New Orleans traditional jazz is
concerned, Preservation Hall has no
equal: a live music venue with
performances throughout the week, it
boasts its own band, which tours
constantly, and is supported by a
non-profit foundation that promotes all its
activities. As part of their international
music residence program -- which seeks
to bring together the city?s musicians with
artists from countries whose rhythms
influence the music of New Orleans --
Preservation Hall invites different bands
to share the stage with their house band.

Tuesday night during three sold-out sets.
Champeta music originated from the
?sound system? culture in Colombia?s
Caribbean Coast, where mobile discos
were essential in spreading their mix of
rhythms and influences, such as
Colombian folklore, Congolese soukous,
Haitian kompa and calypso, among
others.
?We are working hard to grow this music
genre and to make it known to the
world,? explains Oscar "Moniki", the
band?s percussionist. ?When music
comes together, it touches the audience
in their heart,? says Boricua, the founder
and guitarist of Tribu Baharú.

As part of the residence
program, guest artists also
spend time working on
outreach activities. In this
case, Tribu Baharú, was able
to bring their musical style to
the radar of youngsters at a
juvenile detention center.
Pocho, the drummer of the
band, explained that this
experience was a great
opportunity to showcase their
genre to the youth of
Louisiana, while at the same
time, showing at-risk
youngsters that there are
different alternatives, such as
art, when it comes to making
choices in life. "It is a chance
to show another way of life
and to potentially change
someone's life," he said.
Tribu Baharú also got the
experience of a lifetime when
they recorded music with
their local counterparts. Not
everyone gets a chance to
be part of a collaboration
with a legendary New
Orleans band, so their time
in the land of jazz was even
more special. ?I would
always ask what jazz was. I
come from one of the islands
in Colombia, and I was told
that to really know jazz, one
should visit the jazz capital of
the world,? said Chindo, the
bass player. ?This is a
dream come true for me.?
Preservation Hall invited
Tribu Baharú next year to be
part of Kanaval, their new
Mardi Gras project. ?We
protect, preserve and
perpetuate all forms of New
Orleans culture,? said
Preservation Hall
Foundation's director of
programs Ashley
Shabankare. ?We?re bridging
the gap between jazz and
other musical genres,? she
said while explaining the
mission of supporting music
communities beyond New
Orleans as part of
Preservation Hall's
international outreach efforts.

La visita reciente de una banda
musical colombiana resaltó la continua
relación cercana entre New Orleans y
Latinoamérica.
Preservation Hall, que bien puede
considerarse como la meca de la
música criolla de nuestra ciudad, sirvió
de anfitrión a la banda Tribu Baharú en
la reciente convivencia, donde dos
géneros musicales encontraron las
raíces que comparten entre sí.
En el marco del jazz tradicional de New
Orleans, Preservation Hall no tiene
igual: es un local de música en vivo con

When I arrived in New Orleans a few years ago, I decided
to start my own business. This endeavor provided to be a
more daunting task than I had expected. However, I found
organizations along the way that were, and continue to be,
fundamental in the growth and continued development of my
company.
I dedicate this month?s rendition of Vivir Mejor to the
American Business Women Association (ABWA), a
professional national organization that specializes in honing
women?s leadership skills, providing women with continuing
education, and highlighting and raising awareness and
recognition of the empowerment of women in business.
The ABWA was founded in 1949 after World War II. During
this war, many women were forced to enter the workforce for
the first time to fill employment and production gaps left
behind
by the millions of
men who were
serving their country
domestically and abroad during combat operations. The
ABWA was established to provide support and training for
women who seek and undoubtedly deserve equal business
opportunities.
Since its inception, ABWA has continually served women in
the workforce and in business at the local and national level.
The mission of ABWA is to gather businesswomen of
diverse occupations and provide opportunities for them, so
that they may better help themselves and help others grow
personally and professionally by providing leadership,
education, networking support, and national exposure and
recognition.
As a businesswoman, I can attest that belonging to this
type of organization is essential for both, personal and
professional growth, and relying on the support of other
women in business is instrumental to this end.
ABWA offers formal opportunities for continuing education,
accrediting its members in business management, public
speaking, and marketing, among many others.
Women who are considering establishing their own
company, or those who?ve already started, should explore
what this organization can do for their respective
businesses.
The opportunity to reach out to other women who have
already paved their way and achieved success in their fields
and to listen to their stories is uniquely supportive, since we
can all relate to each other. Being able to interact and
network with other women in business for a few hours can
help recharge energies and may even result in referrals and
in generating innovative groundbreaking ideas!
Our future is in our own hands; it?s in the hands of women
nationwide fighting and struggling to succeed all while
competing and striving to provide valuable substance in the
business forum. We can, and must, help each other succeed
and there is no better manner of achieving this than by
providing a booming, boisterous referral and unyielding
support for every one of your brilliantly empowered female
colleagues.

contract. The 24-year-old

CONCLUSSION
Rondo?s leader ship and elite passing abilities will be tough to r eplace. The Pelicans have alr eady had success
without Cousins, but, when healthy, he?s an elite player , and tim e will tell if letting him walk was the r ight decision.
The good news is New Or leans will still r etur n its two best player s in Anthony Davis and Jr ue H oliday.
Also, the team can still m ak e som e m inor r oster m oves befor e next season. But to r eplicate last year ?s success, the
Pelicans will need the new ar r ivals to m ak e significant contr ibutions.

In an effort to change the trend of ?metrosexuality? which
originated in the 1990?s, where men overly cared for their
appearances while trying to keep lean bodies, publicly
admitted the need for skin and hair care products, and
donned form fitting clothing, men?s care in our decade
focuses on highlighting masculine traits, explaining the recent
proliferation of the use of beards.
?Uber-sexuality? is the term used to describe this new,
contemporary trend encompassing men who exhibit traditional
masculine qualities and accentuate the caring nature of the
new man. The term comes from the German word Über,
which means ?above?, translating to mean ?above sexuality?,
reminding us of Nietzsche?s ?Superman? (Übermensch): The
Alpha male of the pack.
Uber-sexuality labels a man who is undoubtedly masculine
but meticulously well-kept. Although the uber-sexual male
does not conform to the extreme nature of metrosexuality, he
is keenly aware of his image.
Another fresh, trendy look that has frequented contemporary
mainstream fashion is ?lumber-sexuality.? Men adherent to this
label maintain a long beard and exhibit their chest hair.
Lumber-sexual men outfit themselves in plaid shirts and work
boots, closely mimicking the appearance of a lumberjack.
These men aim to achieve that masculine look with the long
beard, but they also otherwise take care of themselves.
These overly ?manly? tendencies have made barber shops a
worldwide trend. Beard care and grooming requires expert
intervention. Whether long or short, beards must be cut,
washed, moisturized, and styled to maintain a ?clean? look. A
beard not properly cared for can become a messy source of
bacteria.
Some advice for a great beard:
You should have enough facial hair to avoid the scruffy-beard
look. To accomplish this, you must let your beard grow for two
to three months without trimming to achieve a thick
appearance.

barba. Es recomendable
realizar una exfoliación una
vez a la semana y utilizar
productos especiales para
barba, como
acondicionadores y pastas de
peinar. La barba debe lucir lo
más impecable posible, para
que llame la atención de una
forma agradable. Después de
comer debe ser cepillada, y de
ser necesario, lavada, para
que no se vuelva un foco
infeccioso.
Como en todo lo demás es
esencial tratar de no tocarse
mucho la barba para no
trasmitir las bacterias que se
encuentran en las manos al
rostro.
Llevar una barba que luzca
cuidada y no desarreglada
requiere tiempo y esfuerzo, y
es importante para el aseo
personal asegurarse que se
vea limpia en todo momento.
Es mejor no llevar barba, si
esta no está bien cuidada.
